Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a liquid required by today’s diesel

engines to meet the stringent emis-sion standards controlled by the EPA. DEF is never added to diesel fuel, it is

injected directly into the exhaust stream using Selective Catalytic

Reduction (SCR). It is a non-hazardous solution of

approximately 32.5% urea in 67.5% de-ionized water. DEF is clear, color-less and looks exactly like water. It has a slight smell of ammonia, simi-lar to some home cleaning agents.

DEF is used in SCR technology to re-move harmful NOx emissions from

diesel engines
