2015-2016 Invited Member, Institute of Medicine Global Forum on Innovation in Health

Professional Education Committee. This Committee was charged with conducting

a fast-track study entitled Educating Health Professionals to Address the Social

Determinants of Health” to examine practices and make recommendations for the

education of health professionals in the U.S. and worldwide to better address the

social determinants of health.

2016 Recognized as a high impact scholar among all Fellows of the Society for Social

Work Research and the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare in

a comprehensive study published in Research on Social Work Practice (Hodge,

Kremer, & Vaughn, 2016).

University of Michigan. The CHRT Policy Fellowship brings together mid-

career/senior health services researchers from UM and state policy makers over

four months to learn from health care experts, and one another, about policy-

2015 Invited member, Chilean Network of Social Work Researchers. Formed in July

2015, this is the first-ever network of social work researchers in Chile.

Universities & Students” was established within the Department of Child

Psychology and Education at the Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul, Korea. I was

invited to serve as an international adviser.

2013-2016 Member, Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Commission on Membership

and Professional Development. The Committee supports the Council on

Conferences and Faculty Development, Council on Leadership Development, and

Council on Publication. It also facilitates and integrates the development of

innovative programs, methods, and materials that enhance and strengthen social

2013 Invited Member, Institute of Medicine-National Research Council Workshop

Planning Committee on “Standards for Benefit-Cost Analysis of Preventive

Interventions for Children, Youth, and Families.” The committee developed the

agenda for the workshop, selected and invited speakers, and moderated

discussions to arrive at some degree of consensus on best practices to conduct

Benefit Cost Analyses.

The primary purpose of this project is to conduct a Stage I RCT to examine the preliminary

efficacy of a brief mHealth version of Storytelling for Empowerment (S4E) vs. a community

practice control condition to improve HIV/STI testing and reduce HIV/STI risk behaviors in a

clinic sample of at-risk adolescents ages 14-21 living in Southeast Michigan. We also seek to

develop a cross-platform and universal version of S4E to be compatible with both IOS and

Android operating systems and multiple mobile devices.

The purpose of the symposium was to describe results of four research projects in large urban

centers, two in the U.S. and two in Chile, that have increased our understandings of

neighborhood influences on youth and adult health, mental health, and substance use

behaviors. We also describe how this information has been utilized by city and governmental

officials to inform policies aimed at improving services. The 4 projects were:

Teaching University of Michigan:

SW 731 Capstone Integrative Seminar. This course provides opportunities for social

work students in advanced field placements to engage in integrative learning, peer

consultation and professional e-portfolio development activities. This seminar is

intended for students in the final term of their program and allows them to process

their learning experiences, both classroom and field, in a safe milieu.

SW 799 Addictions: A Global Perspective. This mini-course focuses on the experiences

many individuals and families worldwide have with a wide range of compulsive

behaviors that are maintained despite negative consequences. Some of these

behaviors are alcohol consumption, tobacco and other drug use, sex, gambling,

exercise, work, internet use, tanning, and even texting, among others. The

courses discusses policy and treatment interventions that are culturally relevant. RCRS Responsible Conduct of Research and Scholarship. This is a 4-hr course that

combines a didactic 4-hr workshop with an experiential component that consists of 4

hours of tailored work. This course is offered 4 times per year to any interested

student but it is mandatory for all SSW students funded by NIH or NSF. This course

is approved by Rackham Graduate School and the Office of the Vice-President for

Research as meeting the content and contact hour requirements set forth by NIH and

NSF.
