By air...Culebra has various airlines operating from the Fernando L. Ribas Dominicci, Isla Grande Airport, located at the Puerto Rico Convention District in San Juan and the José Aponte de la Torre Airport, located, at the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Station in Ceiba.
Both airports have private parking lots for the safety of your vehicle with daily costs. Some airlines offer charter services to the Island and the cost may vary. Many use this alternative for groups of 8 people or less and can be scheduled to your convenience.
Por aire...Culebra cuenta con varias aerolíneas que operan desde el Aeropuerto Fernando L. Ribas Dominicci de Isla Grande, localizado en el Distrito de Convenciones de Puerto Rico en San Juan y el Aeropuerto José Aponte de la Torre, localizado en la antigua base de Roosevelt Roads en Ceiba.
Ambos aeropuertos cuentan con estacionamiento privado para la seguridad de sus vehículos y los mismos tienen costos diarios. Algunas aerolíneas ofrecen los servicios de “charters” y sus costos varían. Muchos optan por esta opción cuando son grupos de hasta 8 personas y se puede coordinar para las horas que más les convenga a los visitantes.

By SeaThere are different ways to travel to the island of Culebra. You can travel by sea on the ferry from the port of Fajardo, on your own boat or contract the services of a water taxi. Definitely, the most common way to travel is by ferry. The cost of the ticket is $2.25 including one bag. If you want to bring additional luggage the cost per item may vary.

Vamos a ser sinceros, ¿qué mejor lugar para acampar que Playa Flamenco? Imagina levantarte y estar a pasos de una de las playas más hermosas del mundo. Además, acampar en Flamenco ofrece amenidades que
muchos otros lugares no ofrecen, como duchas, baños y kioscos de comida con necesidades básicas. Estos son nuestros tips para acampar en Culebra:
Sigue siempre las reglas del área de acampar. Cuando decides acampar, verás que tendrás que separar y pagar tu espacio en la oficina que está en la entrada del balneario ($20 por noche/por caseta de hasta 6 personas). Ellos te darán una lista con las reglas para acampar. Siempre ten tu recibo accesible.
Trae repelente de insectos y sunblock. ¿Necesita explicación?
Tennis. No pierdas la oportunidad de aventurar por Flamenco o de hacer la caminata hasta la playa Carlos Rosario por no tener los zapatos adecuados.
Escoba sin palo. Es una excelente idea para recoger la arena que entras con los pies a la caseta. La idea de no llevar el palo es ocupar el menor espacio necesario dentro del equipo de acampar.
Agua para beber. Mantenerse hidratado es sumamente importante, sobre todo si estás el día entero en la playa o ingiriendo bebidas alcohólicas.
No olvides tu flashlight. El encanto de acampar es poder apreciar la naturaleza, como la luna y las estrellas, pero la luz de las estrellas no te ayudará a encontrar algo dentro de tu bulto o a tu pana que se fue a dar una vuelta y no ha regresado.
Lleva bolsas de basura. Nadie quiere acampar en un área con basura. Aunque hay suficientes zafacones, es buena idea llevar bolsas de basura para no tener que caminar a ellos cada vez que tengas que botar algo. Ayuda a mantener el área de acampar limpia.
Comparte lo tuyo. Nadie llega a acampar con absolutamente todo lo que necesita. Si tu vecino de caseta te pide algo prestado, préstaselo, las probabilidades de que él tenga algo que tú necesites más adelante son bien altas.
Viaja liviano. No es necesario cargar con el closet entero para ir a acampar. Lleva sólo lo esencial. No olvides el cash.

El último y más importante tip, sometido por nuestro lector Juan C. Gaztambide, es tener paciencia. Paciencia con tus vecinos de casetas, con el personal del área de acampar y empleados de los kioscos y, sobre todo, paciencia “pa’ no pelear con los panas después de tres días juntos”. Esperamos que estos tips te ayuden en tu próximo camping en Flamenco.
Let’s be frank, what better place to camp than Flamenco beach? Imagine waking up just a few feet away from one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Also, camping in Flamenco has some perks that most camping sites don’t have, like public showers and bathrooms, food and basic necessities kiosks. These are our Culebra camping tips:
Always follow the rules. When you decide to camp, you’ll see you have to reserve and pay for your site in the office located at the entrance of the beach ($20 per night/per tent of a max of 6 people). They will provide a list of the campground’s rules. Always have the receipt at hand.
Bring insect repellent and sunblock. Does this really need an explanation?
Tennis shoes. Don’t miss out on the opportunity of adventuring around Flamenco or hiking up to Carlos Rosario Beach.
Broom without a stick. This is an excellent way of keeping all the sand out of your tent. Leave the broomstick so it’s easier to pack.
Bottled water. Keeping hydrated is very important, especially if you’re spending a whole day in the beach or drinking alcoholic beverages.
Don’t forget your flashlight. Part of camping’s appeal is
appreciating nature, like the moon and stars, but the twinkling stars won’t help you find something inside your backpack or your friend who went for a walk and hasn’t come back yet.
Bring trash bags. No one wants to camp where it’s dirty. Although there are more than enough trash cans, it’s a good idea to bring bags so you don’t have to walk to them every time you want to throw something away. Help keep the campground clean.
Share. Everyone always forgets something. If your tent neighbor asks to borrow something, lend it to him. Chances are, you’ll need
something of his later on.
Travel light. It’s not necessary to pack your entire closet for a camping trip. Bring only the essentials. Remember to bring cash.
The last and most important tip, submitted by our reader Juan C. Gaztambide, is “be patient”. Be patient with your tent neighbors, with the campground staff, with the kiosk employee and, especially, be patient “[with your friends] so you don’t end up fighting after three long days together.” We hope these tips help you on your next camping trip to Flamenco.

“I’m a firm believer of good portions,
“I believe in value, a good meal, a good wine, a good time.” And at this point, we can give faith to that. We are sitting around the table at Susie’s Restaurant,
where we decided to share different dishes to profile owner Chef Suzanne Hebert.
Susie’s is a casual restaurant with a fine-dining flair. Her philosophy, “tropical latitudes cuisine” stems from her theory that “we share many ingredients around the world’s Equator, but we don’t use them in the same way, and I find that fascinating”, she proudly says. Her dishes blend oriental flavors, but always looking for “our twist”, that way she creates her cross-cultured menu that changes seasonally. On our table we have dishes that we would never imagine, but that go perfectly together, like duck croquettes with sour orange sauce, which feels very Oriental-Cuban, or the yucca and curry cream soup, Puerto Rican-Indian.
As many of her colleague-chefs in Culebra, Susie Herbert has earned her stripes on and off the kitchen. With 17 years of restaurants under her chef’s coat, she has worked at the kitchens of renowned hotels such as the Crown Plaza, Caribe Hilton and the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. She knows her way around many disciplines and cooking styles having worked from banquets to “front of the house”, all building-up to her aspiration of opening her own place, which happened right here in Culebra in 2007, appropriately becoming Susie’s Restaurant.
“Even though this is a men-driven business, the sensibility and style a woman can bring to the culinary arts, in terms of plate presentation, gives us an edge”. Her inclination towards cooking comes from her grandmother, food is something that unites the Puerto Rican family. “I loved watching my grandmother cook, and I started learning and reading every book I could find, spending hours at the bookstores”, she says. Hebert earned her degree in New Jersey where she focused in Culinary Arts, restaurant & hotel management.
Giving back to Culebra“When I stepped off the ferry and I looked at the water and I could see the bottom I just fell in love. It was really a turning point in my life and I said, I’m going to stay right here. Life in Culebra is healthier than in the ‘Isla Grande’”, says Susie. Never having visited Culebra, she

was obviously enthralled by Culebra’s natural beauty but also the opportunity to make one of her most cherished dreams come true, opening her restaurant.
Susie feels like she’s giving back to Culebra. She employs around 9 people, including her sous chef and right-hand-man, Ramón Félix Bermúdez, a culebrense who is pursuing his career in the Culinary Arts in Carolina. “He travels every week to study, he’s very determined”, she says proudly.
With all her experience, Susie remains very conscious and down-to-earth. “I don’t believe in the ‘chef’s ego’, we’re not doing brain-surgery here, in the end I just want to cook you a great meal. I’m a very casual person, what I want to do is give back. I prefer to live my life with my personal values intact, taking care of my cats, fighting for this community and live a fulfilled, serene life. And thank God Culebra gives me that”.

“Soy creyente de dar buenas porciones. La cocina minimalista no es para mí”, dijo la Chef Susie Hebert al muy satisfecho equipo de En Culebra Magazine.
“Creo en el valor de una buena comida, un buen vino, un buen momento.” Y podemos dar fe de
ello. Estamos sentados en la mesa en Susie’s Restaurant, donde decidimos ordenar y compartir platos diferentes para reseñar a la Chef Suzanne Hebert.
Susie’s es un restaurante casual con un toque de alta cocina. Su filosofía, “tropical latitudes cuisine” se deriva de su teoría de que “compartimos muchos ingredientes alrededor del ecuador del planeta, pero no los utilizamos de la misma manera, y eso me parece fascinante”, nos dice con orgullo. Sus platos combinan los sabores orientales, pero siempre en busca de “nuestro toque”, de esa manera crea su menú multicultural, que varía por temporadas. En nuestra mesa tenemos platos que nunca imaginaríamos, pero que van perfectamente juntos, como croquetas de pato con salsa de naranja agria, que se siente como cubano-oriental, o la crema de yuca y curry, indú-boricua.
Como muchos de sus colegas chefs en Culebra, Susie Herbert ha tenido experiencia dentro y fuera de la cocina. Con 17 años de trabajo en restaurantes tras su delantal, ha trabajado en las cocinas de hoteles de renombre como el Crown Plaza, Caribe Hilton y el Hotel Ritz-Carlton. Ha adquirido experiencia en muchas disciplinas y estilos de cocina que ha

“Aunque éste es un negocio impulsado por los hombres, la sensibilidad y el estilo de una mujer puede aportar a las artes culinarias, en términos de presentación de platos, nos da una ventaja”. Su inclinación hacia la cocina viene de su abuela; “la comida es algo que une a la familia puertorriqueña. Me encantaba ver a mi abuela cocinar, y comencé a aprender y leer todos los libros que pude encontrar, pasando horas en las librerías.” Obtuvo su título en Nueva Jersey, donde se especializó en artes culinarias y administración de hoteles y restaurantes.
Devolviéndole a Culebra“Cuando me bajé del Ferry, miré el mar y vi el fondo, me enamoré, ese momento fue un momento clave, y dije, yo me voy a quedar aquí. La vida aquí es mucho más sana que en la Isla Grande”, dice Susie Hebert. Sin haber visitado Culebra antes, fue cautivada por la belleza natural, obviamente, pero también por la oportunidad de hacer uno de sus sueños más preciados realidad, abrir su restaurante.
Susie siente que le está devolviendo a Culebra. Ella emplea alrededor de 9 personas, entre ellas su ayudante y mano derecha, Ramón Félix Bermúdez, un culebrense que está estudiando su carrera en las artes culinarias en Carolina. “Él viaja cada semana para estudiar, es muy decidido”, dice Susie orgullosa.

Con toda su experiencia, Susie sigue siendo muy consciente y con los pies en la tierra. “No creo en el ‘ego del chef’, nosotros no estamos haciendo cirugía cerebral, al final sólo quiero preparar una buena comida. Soy una persona casual y lo que quiero es dar para atrás. Prefiero vivir una vida feliz sin ningún tipo de pretensión pues mis valores personales no están ahí. Están en cuidar mis gatos, luchar por esta comunidad, y vivir una vida tranquila. Gracias a Dios Culebra me lo permite.”

My Re-Discovery of Culebra
My last trip to Culebra was over eight years ago. Life contributed to my extensive absence from this island, but it was life that brought me back to it. The purpose of this story is to thank Culebra and its residents for this new aura in my life. Sometimes life kicks you in the gut and it seems there is no positive outcome in sight.
After months of dealing with many situations I finally decided to let everything go. Lucky for me, I know the Staff of “En Culebra Magazine”, who invited me to the distribution of their Magazine’s second issue and a backstage view of all the work they do to give all their readers a glimpse of Culebra’s beauty. The invitation was supposed to get my mind off things but it served for a lot more.
Our first night, we went out to distribute a few magazines. “The Spot” a cozy bar at the entrance of town became our refuge for the night. Fede, the owner poured a round and joined us for some laughs and conversations. Shortly there after a short, barefooted, surfer looking, character walked through the door. “Chiquitin” (little one) as he was introduced to me, became the life of the party sharing personal anecdotes, life lessons, jokes and social views with anybody who would listen. Fede’s wife, Alicia, Javi from “Juanita Bananas”, Juan a local celebrity and a few others joined our evening. I felt like the new comer in “Cheers”; were everybody knew everybody’s name and tried very hard to learn mine. Our first night ended stargazing at Zoní, a beach that offered an immediate connection to nature.
Saturday morning we distributed more magazines and allowed ourselves to enjoy a beach called “Punta Soldado”. A great beach for snorkeling also offered a great opportunity for sunbathing. Our relaxed afternoon was followed by an amazingly delicious dinner in Susie’s, a meal that cannot be described in words except to say that it left us in what was explained to me as a “food coma”.
The annoying task of packing for the trip back to reality finally arrived. The trip served as a reminder of how warm, caring and friendly the Culebra residents are to anybody who is lucky enough to come into their lives. I truly needed time for myself and I thank my friends for taking me to a place were I could have some peaceful, and reflective time for myself while at the same time never feeling lonely. The Culebra experience gives everyone something different; it gave me a life lesson; when you think you’re sinking in the sand, remember that all you need to do is take that first step forward.

atención compartiendo anécdotas, consejos de vida, chistes y opiniones sociales con quien quiera que lo escuchara. La esposa de Fede, Alicia, Javi de “Juanita Bananas”, Juan, un personaje conocido local y otros se unieron a nosotros para pasar la noche. Me sentía como el tipo nuevo en “Cheers”, donde todos conocen el nombre de todo el mundo y se esforzaban para aprender el mío. Terminamos la noche mirando las estrellas en Zoní, una playa que me ofreció una conexión inmediata a la naturaleza.
El sábado en la mañana distribuimos más revistas y disfrutamos de una playa conocida como Punta Soldado. Una excelente playa para hacer snorkeling y una gran oportunidad para coger un poco de sol. Nuestra tarde relax fue seguida por una increíblemente deliciosa cena en Susie’s, una cena que no puede ser descrita en palabras excepto que nos dejó en lo que me explicaron ser un “food coma”.
La fastidiosa tarea de empacar para el viaje de vuelta a la realidad finalmente llegó. El viaje sirvió como recuerdo de cuán acogedores, cariñosos y amistosos son los culebrenses con aquellos que tienen la oportunidad de ser parte de sus vidas. Realmente necesitaba tiempo para mí mismo y le agradezco a mis amigos por llevarme a un sitio donde podía tener tiempo tranquilo y de reflexión sin sentirme, en ningún momento, solo. La experiencia de Culebra les regala a todos algo distinto. Personalmente, me dio una lección de vida: cuando piensas que te estás hundiendo en la arena, recuerda que sólo tienes que dar ese primer paso hacia adelante.
Mi última visita a Culebra fue hace más de ocho años atrás. La vida contribuyó a mi extensa ausencia de esta tranquila isla, pero fue la vida misma la que me trajo de vuelta. El propósito de mi historia es agradecerle a Culebra y a sus residentes por esta nueva aura en mi vida. Algunas veces la vida te patea y parece no haber una luz al final del camino.
Luego de meses de lidiar con muchas situaciones, finalmente decidí dejarlo todo atrás. Para mi suerte, conozco al equipo de trabajo de “En Culebra Magazine”, quienes me invitaron a la distribución de su segunda edición y una mirada tras bastidores de todo el trabajo que hacen para ofrecerles a sus lectores una visión de la hermosura de Culebra. La invitación suponía hacerme olvidar mis problemas pero resultó ser mucho más.
Nuestra primera noche, salimos a distribuir unas cuantas revistas. “The Spot” un acogedor bar en la entrada del pueblo se convirtió en nuestro refugio esa noche. Fede, el dueño, sirvió un round y nos acompañó en conversación y risas. Un poquito más tarde, un tipo bajito, descalzo y con look de surfer entró por la puerta. “Chiquitín”, como me lo presentaron, se convirtió en el centro de la

If you happen to be staying in Culebra for more than a day, chances are, you probably already visited its most popular
beach, Flamenco. Why not venture out and get to know one of Culebra’s unique snorkeling and diving spots?
Punta Soldado is a quiet beach off the southern coast of Culebra. It’s an excellent spot for amateur divers and snorkelers. Getting there is a bit of an adventure, too. The road is paved to a certain point so almost everyone will tell you that an off-road vehicle is necessary to travel the rocky dirt road that leads into the beach. The view from the road is spectacular. If you have the chance, stop where the dirt road begins and appreciate the view of Dakity, Fulladoza, Ensenada Honda and St. Thomas from the highest point of the trip. Also, Punta Soldado is on the most arid part of Culebra so you will see mostly cacti and dry vegetation.

Once there, the first thing you will notice is that the beach is a combination of sand and coral. Well, mostly coral. I always remember to bring my flip-flops or diving shoes for this beach, you should too. Although it’s best known for its diving spots, you can also bring a beach chair and work on your suntan. From your beach chair, you can enjoy the peaceful sound of the water hitting the shore and the spectacular view of Vieques and Puerto Rico. If you’d rather sit on the beach, bring an umbrella. There is very little shade on the shore.
Punta Soldado is a great snorkeling and diving spot with good reason. Its calm, clear waters and the reefs that almost creep into the shore make it a habitat for an array of underwater species. I’m talking fish, turtle, octopus, lobster, you name it, and it’s there! You will appreciate the delicate balance of the underwater ecosystem and you can, literally, see the
growths spurt of the coral reefs. The best reefs are on the left-hand side of the beach. Need a little help finding it? Easy, when you walk to the beach, turn left. A hundred feet away, you will see a huge boulder in the middle of the shore. Enter the water at this point and swim to the left. You’re there! Remember, there are places on the island that will rent you an underwater camera. All you need to bring is your memory card and you will be able to take pictures of all the lovely creatures you encounter on your underwater adventure. As always, remember to bring a diving buddy. It’s never a good idea to snorkel or dive alone. Also remember that touching the reefs is strongly discouraged.
If you’re traveling with small children, make sure they are always wearing diving shoes, especially when they go in the water. As I said before, it’s a pebbly walk from the shore to the water. If your kids are the adventurous type,
this is a great beach to teach them to snorkel, just bring lifejackets. Also, your kids might enjoy picking out the black and white pebbles on the shore and arranging them in different designs. I know we do!
Si has estado en Culebra por más de un día, probablemente ya has visitado la playa más popular, Playa Flamenco. ¿Por qué no explorar y conocer uno de los destino más conocidos de snorkel y buceo en Culebra?
Punta Soldado es una playa tranquila en la costa sur de Culebra. Es un lugar excelente para los aficionados del buceo y el snorkel. Además, el camino es una aventura también. La carretera está pavimentada hasta cierto punto por lo que muchos te dirán que un vehículo todoterreno es necesario para recorrer el camino rocoso que conduce a la playa. La vista desde la carretera es espectacular. Si tienes la oportunidad,
detente donde comienza el camino de tierra y aprecia la vista de Dakity, Fulladoza, Ensenada Honda y St. Thomas desde el punto más alto del viaje. Además, Punta Soldado está en la parte más árida de Culebra por lo que verás mayormente cactus y vegetación seca.
Al llegar, lo primero que notarás es que la playa es una combinación de arena y coral. Bueno, mayormente coral. Siempre me acuerdo de traer mis chancletas o zapatos de buceo para esta playa, debes traerlos tú también. Aunque es mejor conocida por sus lugares de buceo, puedes traer una silla de playa y coger un poco de sol. Desde tu silla de playa puedes disfrutar el sonido apacible del agua golpeando la orilla y la vista espectacular de Vieques y la Isla Grande. Si vas a estar mucho tiempo en la playa, debes llevar una sombrilla. Hay muy poca sombra para guarecerse del sol.
Punta Soldado es un excelente destino de buceo y snorkeling con buena razón. Sus aguas tranquilas y claras y los arrecifes que

casi llegan a la orilla lo convierten en un hábitat para una gran variedad de especies submarinas. Estamos hablando de peces, tortugas, pulpos, langostas, lo que imagines, ¡está allí! Podrás apreciar el delicado equilibrio del ecosistema submarino y se puede, literalmente, ver los puntos de crecimiento de los arrecifes de coral. Los mejores arrecifes están en el lado izquierdo de la playa. ¿Quieres una ayudita encontrándolos? Fácil, cuando caminas hasta la playa, gira a la izquierda. Verás una enorme piedra en medio de la orilla, como a 100 pies de distancia. Entra al agua en este punto y nada hacia la izquierda. ¡Ya llegaste! Recuerda, hay comercios en la isla que alquilan cámaras a prueba de agua. Sólo necesitas traer tu tarjeta de memoria y podrás tomar fotografías de todas las criaturas
encantadoras que encuentres en tu aventura bajo el agua. Como siempre, recuerda llevar un compañero de buceo. Nunca es una buena idea hacer snorkel o bucear solo. También, recuerda que tocar los arrecifes les hace daño, así que evítalo. Si viajas con niños pequeños, asegúrate de que siempre usen los zapatos de buceo, especialmente cuando entran al agua. Como he dicho antes, la orilla del agua es un camino pedregoso. Si tus hijos son aventureros ésta es una gran playa para enseñarles a bucear, sólo trae chalecos salvavidas. Además, los niños pueden disfrutar recogiendo las piedras blancas y negras en la orilla y haciendo diseños con ellas. ¡Nosotros lo hicimos!

GeneThomasGene Thomas just retired from the Ports Authority. We set out to interview him, thinking we would talk about his past years as Captain, being one of the men responsible for thousands of people coming to and from the Island. But, what we discovered was an incredible person filled with life experiences, a passion for diving, and an unparalleled love for Culebra… We just had to switch gears.
If you’ve been traveling to Culebra for the past ten years, Gene Thomas has probably brought you here. Over the course of his career, he’s accumulated thousands of hours at sea, making three round trips a day on each of his shifts. “The ferry system is a highway for the residents; it has become a tourist supported industry in itself because the Island needs the tourism. Almost 90% of the people who come over do so in the ferry”, he says on the importance of this method of transportation.
But this soft-spoken serene individual has called Culebra his home long before all of this. “It’s hard to explain the feeling I have in Culebra, with time, this feeling never leaves me. It’s just a very pleasant Island to be in. Snorkeling, diving… It’s a simple life”, explains Thomas who moved here in 1975.
As many fellow residents we’ve come to meet here in Culebra, Gene arrived long before the Island was what it is today. “There was nothing back then, no restaurants, nothing downtown, it was very quiet”, remembers Thomas who moved to Puerto Rico from New York where he worked in Fashion Photography. He was living in Río Piedras, but once he set foot in Culebra, he was sold. He went back; sold everything he owned and moved to Culebra with his son Vance who he raised here.
Upon arriving, he opened the first dive shop in Culebra, stemming from his passion, the ocean. He became a diving instructor, and spent his days in the water. At sea is where Gene feels most at home, and where he’s spent most of his life. When he dives, he feels a great connection with his surroundings as he reminisces about even making friends with an octopus at one point. “I’d always dive at this spot and give him a little conch shell, he’d come over I’d put him on my shoulder, and he’d stay with me the whole dive. Then we’d finish, I’d put him back in his little lair and give him another conch shell. That happened for months at a time” he proudly says. We sit and smile as we imagine this unbelievable situation, but somehow completely authentic coming from this man. He says that you don’t have to be afraid, because you can be friends with almost anything in the water and if you don’t act aggressive towards
anything while diving or snorkeling; it’s a one-on-one unique relationship that’s a completely different feeling. And this is exactly the energy he gives off when you speak to him, we can just imagine him swimming with sharks with a smile on his face.
To Gene, Culebra is the best place he’s ever been. His wife is from Culebra, he’s raising his children here and here is where he plans to stay. This is home. We ask him what he’s going to do with all the free time he’s going to have in his hands. He smiles and says he’s going to be with his family and spend his days in the water, as always.
“I invite you to go diving, it’ll change your life, it changed mine”, he concludes with a smile.

de personas que viajan desde y hasta Culebra. Sin embargo, descubrimos a una persona increíble llena de experiencias, una pasión por el buceo y un incomparable amor por Culebra. Tuvimos que cambiar de curso.
Si has viajado a Culebra en los pasados diez años, Gene Thomas probablemente te trajo hasta aquí. En el transcurso de su carrera, ha acumulado miles de horas de navegación, haciendo tres viajes ida y vuelta en cada turno. “El sistema de ferries es la autopista para los residentes, se ha convertido en una industria apoyada por el turismo porque la Isla depende del turismo. Casi el 90% de las personas que vienen a la Isla, lo hacen con el ferry”, nos cuenta sobre la importancia de este método de transportación.
Pero este individuo sereno ha llamado a Culebra su hogar mucho antes de todo esto. “Es difícil explicar el sentimiento que tengo en Culebra, que con el tiempo, nunca me abandona. Es muy agradable estar aquí. Haciendo snorkeling, buceando… Es una vida simple”, explica Thomas, quien se mudó aquí en 1975.
Como muchos de los residentes que hemos llegado a conocer en Culebra, Gene llegó mucho antes de que la Isla fuese lo que es ahora. “No había nada entonces, ni restaurantes, nada en el pueblo, era muy callada”, recuerda Thomas quien se mudó a Puerto Rico de New York donde trabajaba en como fotógrafo de moda. Vivía en Río Piedras pero en cuanto llegó a Culebra, se convenció. Regresó, vendió todo lo que tenía y se mudó a Culebra con su hijo Vance, a quien crió aquí.
Cuando llegó, abrió la primera tienda de buceo en Culebra, gracias a su pasión, el mar. Era instructor de buceo
y pasaba los días en el agua. En el mar es donde Gene se siente más a gusto, donde ha pasado la mayor parte de su vida. Cuando bucea, siente una enorme conexión con sus alrededores y recuerda en un momento hasta hacerse amigo de un pulpo. “Siempre buceaba en el mismo sitio y le daba un pedacito de carrucho, él venía hacia mí y yo me lo ponía en el hombro, ahí se quedaba el resto del día. Al final, yo lo ponía de vuelta en su cuevita y le daba otro pedacito de carrucho. Fue parte de mi rutina por meses”, nos dice alegremente. Nosotros sonreímos y lo miramos mientras imaginamos esta increíble situación, que nos parece absolutamente auténtica mientras él la cuenta. Gene dice que no debes tener miedo porque puedes crear amistad con casi todo lo que encuentras bajo el agua si no actúas de manera agresiva mientras buceas. Es una relación más íntima y única. Ésta energía calmada es la misma que emite mientras hablas con él. Ya nos lo podemos imaginar nadando entre tiburones con una sonrisa en su rostro.
Para Gene, Culebra es el mejor lugar donde ha estado. Su esposa es culebrense, está criando a sus hijos aquí y aquí piensa quedarse. Éste es su hogar.
Le preguntamos qué va hacer ahora con su tiempo libre. Sonríe y dice que va a pasarlo con su familia y en el agua, como lo ha hecho siempre.
“Te invito a ir de buceo, te cambiará la vida, cambió la mía”, concluye sonriente.
Buen viento y buen mar, nuevamente “Captain George” les saluda y les invita a visitar la bellas playas de la Isla de Culebra y navegar sus alrededores.
Mis recomendaciones al navegar por Culebra es que visite áreas como Dákity. Entrando hacia Ensenada Honda encontrará a Dakity para anclarse a gusto en aguas tranquilas y con el color turquesa que hace inolvidable el lugar. Es importante buscar primero las boyas de amarre. Ellas forman parte de un sistema que se usa para detener una embarcación sin la necesidad de realizar maniobras de fondeo o anclaje, claro está que si no hay disponibles, busque un área en donde poder anclar sin hacerle daño al fondo marino ya que el deterioro de los ecosistemas afecta directamente los parajes naturales en donde viven especies marinas únicas en el mundo.
Destinos que no pueden faltar para visitar en su lancha o velero son la Isla de Culebrita, que tiene muchas áreas para explorar, y el hermosísimo Cayo Luis Peña. Estos lugares son reconocidos por su valor ecológico y las hermosas experiencias que pueden vivir al bucear, hacer “snorkeling”, nadar y explorar su exótica fauna y flora. Estos son algunos de los atractivos que buscamos los navegantes al llegar a estas sorprendentes y cristalinas aguas que nos invitan durante todo el año y que proporcionan tranquilidad, paz y sosiego.
Sin embargo, se debe proteger el fondo marino en Culebrita y en el Cayo Luis Peña, Ensenada Honda y cualquier área en donde planifique anclar durante su visita a Culebra, ya que es una porción muy especial del paraíso. Protejamos las aguas de la Isla cuidando de no dejar caer al agua desperdicios líquidos o sólidos.
Les exhorto a aventurarse a explorar las playas de Culebra, imagínese la diversidad: Playa Flamenco, Playa Zoní, Punta Soldado, Tamarindo, Playa Tortuga, Playa Larga, Playa Brava, Playa Melones…
Me despido igual que al comienzo, “buen viento y buen mar”. Los espero en Culebra para que disfruten uno de los mejores destinos en el Caribe.

Good breeze and good sea, again “Captain George” here inviting you to visit the beautiful beaches of the island of Culebra and sail its surroundings.
While visiting Culebra, I recommend sailing to areas like Dákity. Going in from Ensenada Honda you will find Dákity, where you can anchor in calm turquoise waters that render it unforgettable. First, it’s important to look for buoys of anchorage. They are part of a system we use to anchor a boat without necessarily touching the bottom. If there are none, look for an area where you are sure you can anchor without harming the sea bottom because the ecosystem’s deterioration impacts the natural habitats of marine species that are unique in the world.
Destinations that you should sail to are the island of Culebrita, which has lots of areas to explore and the stunning Cayo Luis Peña. These areas are recognized for their ecological value and the beautiful experiences you encounter while diving, snorkeling, swimming and exploring their exotic fauna and flora. These are just some of the attractions we sailors look for when we arrive to these surprisingly clear waters that invite us year round and bring us peace, quiet and tranquility.
However, we should always protect the sea bottom in Ensenada Honda, Culebrita, Cayo Luis Peña and anywhere else you plan to anchor during your visit to Culebra because it’s a very special piece of paradise. Let’s protect this island’s waters making sure not to spill any liquid or solid waste.
I implore you to venture around Culebra’s beaches, imagine the diversity: Flamenco, Zóní, Punta Soldado, Tamarindo, Playa Tortuga, Playa Larga, Playa Brava, Playa Melones…
I bid you farewell the same way I started, “good breeze and good sea”. I’ll wait for you in Culebra so you’ll enjoy one of the best destinations in the Caribbean.
