YR 7 & 8 SCIENCE HIGH ACHIEVERS

On Thursday 7 November, the High Achievers Science 7 & 8 class went to Casey Tech in Berwick. Our topic was to

learn about energy efficiency in houses. When we got there, we met Kim and Will (our instructors) for the day. They

explained what activities we were going to do on the day. We booked for the year 7-8 discovery program, in this program

we designed and built two types of energy efficient houses. The first house we built was made of cardboard and a

hummingbird electronic board. After we connected the wires and placed them into our cardboard house, we had to use

laptops to program what happens in our house. We had to remember that it had to be energy efficient so our house

lights would turn on when the house was dark and then turn off when the house was bright. The second house we built

was a more sustainable house. We used different types of materials such as wood, metal, cardboard, etc. for this house,

we had to try not tomake the temperature rise too much. My group’s house raised by 0.5 degrees, which Kim said was

very good. The record of the day was 0.1 degrees. My favourite part in Casey Tech was the touch ID lockers. At the

start we had to use our thumbs to activate our hire lockers for the day. After that, all we had to do was to scan our

thumbs and the locker would open. Overall the day was great!!

YEAR 8 OASIS CAMP

Monday 28 October was an exciting day for Year 8 as 100 students set off for 3-days at Oasis Camp with Ms Turner,

Ms Sykes, Mr Hooper, Ms Neil, Mr Speirs, Ms Maudsley, Ms Hayes, Ms Ashford and Ms Mawal. Oasis Camp is situated

in Mount Evelyn surrounded by dense bushland, equipped with 20 cabins, dining hall, games room, reptile house, low

ropes course, climbing wall and large gymnasium. We were blessed with sunny weather and clear skies for the 3 days,

perfect conditions for the range of outdoor activities on offer.

On Day 1, students were assigned mixed activity groups which gave them the opportunity to get to know students from

different home groups. During the course of the camp, students could earn points for their groups by showing initiative,

teamwork and effort. After lunch, they participated in team-building games run by the Gleneagles staff including water

balloon toss, the ‘apple’ and spoon race, and the 3-legged race, among other ice-breaker activities. In the evening,

students toasted marshmallows around the campfire and made “s’mores” which were a hit amongst students and staff.

On Day 2, groups completed various activities both on and off-site, including kayaking, laser tag, initiatives, archery,

team building, reptile house, low ropes and an environmental walk. Students and staff especially enjoyed the opportunity

of kayaking on Lilydale Lake, as many had not tried it before. The other student (and staff) favourite was laser tag, with

a laser tag course set up extending from inside the gym to various locations outdoors. In the reptile house activity,

students had the opportunity to view and hold various reptiles, including snakes and lizards. In the evening, groups

competed against each other at trivia night with rounds for Camp Knowledge, General Knowledge, Sport and

Music/Television.

On the third and final day, students packed up and cleaned out their cabins before completing a Scavenger Hunt for

final points for their team. Congratulations to group D who snagged victory over group B by 1 point! The students then

hiked 5.5km from Oasis camp to Silvan Dam for a healthy barbeque lunch before boarding the bus back to school.

A huge thank you to the staff who volunteered their time to come on camp, Year 8 camp could not have gone ahead

without you. The students had a fun and memorable experience and this is thanks to the enthusiasm, initiative and

creativity demonstrated in delivering a hands-on and inclusive camp program.
