MOHAWK COLLEGE REPORT - MARCH 2004 Based on the 2004 - 2008 Strategic Priorities- December 2003 LEARNING ABOVE ALL Page 1 ACHIEVE INNOVATION IN LEARNING 1.1 The year 2 Legal Office Administration classes participated in a half-day trial observation at the John Sopinka Court House. Arrangements were made for each class to attend and observe a criminal trial in progress. Prior to the field trip, each class received a synopsis of the material facts of the case and discussed the roles of the various court personnel. Both classes observed a second-degree murder jury trial in progress. The presiding judge was His Honour Mr. Justice Nick Borkovich. Justice Borkovich addressed the students in a question-and-answer period during a court recess and discussed the criminal justice process generally and specifically with respect to the case at hand. This type of field trip puts real life into motion after the theory has been taught in the classroom. Two jazz greats from Britain, Kenny Wheeler and Norma Winstone, were on campus for the entire week offering master classes and clinics. Wheeler is a trumpet player and is known for his composing and arranging and Winstone is a singer who offered inspiration and advice to student singers in our program. The “Artist in Residence” program culminated in a very successful fund raising concert on Saturday, Feb.7 in the McIntyre Theatre. The concert attracted an audience of approximately 800 people. The Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra (Dave is a faculty member in the Music Dept.) performed with Kenny Wheeler and Norma Winstone. The SFMJ is a local committee formed to raise funds for the students of the Music Programs at Mohawk College. For over three years they have held a number of fundraising events and contributed a very significant amount of money to support the students. We are most grateful for their willing partnership to increase the level of quality of education for Mohawk Music students. a Saturday of music workshops, school band competitions and to find out about the Music Programs at Mohawk College. The faculty and students at Mohawk volunteer their time to provide a full and active day for prospective students. This year, many stayed for the evening concert with guest artists Kenny Wheeler and Norma Winstone from the U.K. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

1.5 While at a conference on Student Success in Vancouver during January, Jay

Moore, Chair of Applied Arts, Fennell Campus, visited the Native Education Centre in downtown Vancouver and the First Nations House of Learning on the campus of UBC. The purpose of the visits was to get ideas and information to help Mohawk College improve the programming we provide for indigenous students and improve and increase our partnerships with Aboriginal organizations in the Hamilton and Brantford areas. 1.6 Third year Advertising students went on a weekend trip to New York City in late

January. The agenda included a tour on RGA Agency (www.rga.com) (part of Mccann), an assignment on Time Square and the history of billboards, and a tour of Parsons School of Art & Design. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

1.7 Bill Brimley, Chair of the Chemical and Environmental Engineering Technology and

Mathematics departments and Mathematics Professors Gary Helmer, Millie Atkinson and Craig Cooke attended the Ontario College Mathematics Association Winter Professional Development meeting at George Brown College on February 16, 2004. The subject of the presentation was Ontario Innovation Trust Funding for Community Colleges. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

1.8 The Chemical Engineering and Environmental Technology department’s

Biotechnology Program proposal was approved at the February 11th Board of Governor’s meeting. The program is scheduled to begin in fall, 2004. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

1.9 Bill Brimley, Chair of the Chemical and Environmental Engineering Technology and

Mathematics department attended the Halton Innovation Showcase on February 18th. Halton Business Development in partnership with the National Research Council of Canada showcased “Best Practices of Lean Product Development”. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

1.10 Damion Steen a Computer Science and Information Technology department student received the Judge W. K. Warrender award at the February 14th convocation. An additional seven CSAIT students received medals during the ceremony. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

1.11 The Building and Construction Sciences department’s fifth semester Transportation

Engineering Technology class will be conducting traffic field studies and research to assist the Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineering with a review and revision of the Canadian Capacity Guide for Signalized Intersection Analysis and Design. The CCG 2nd Ed. is now almost 10 years old, and as part of their fifth semester Transportation Project course, students will be designing and conducting field studies to obtain data to support the 3rd edition of the guide. 1.12 The Building and Construction Sciences Department wishes to recognize the gift

of over $2,000 in piping materials to our Plumbing Apprenticeship program from Bibby-Ste-Croix. Bibby continues to partner with Mohawk College to ensure that our plumbing apprentices have the best materials to work with during their in-school training. 1.13 Congratulations to Melissa Zammit, fourth semester Construction Engineering Technician student who has been invited to speak at the Hamilton YWCA's Totally Awesome Women's breakfast on March 8, 2004. Melissa is the sole female in this innovative technician-apprenticeship program that combines the basic level of general carpenter and plumber in-school apprenticeship training into a technician diploma. 1.14 The Building and Construction Sciences Department wishes to thank Hatch

Associates Ltd. for their continued sponsorship of the first place prize in the Mohawk College Annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition. Hatch provides a tuition scholarship of $2,000 for the top placing bridge. The competition is scheduled for Wednesday, March 24 at 12 noon in the Fennell gymnasium, and will be followed by the High School Competition on that same day. 1.15 The fifth semester Transportation Engineering Technology class is assisting the

Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineers with research around driver behaviour and traffic flow through traffic control signals. As part of the TR592 Transportation Project 1 course, students will be collecting and analyzing field data

1.16 As part of the fifth semester Architectural Technology - Design class project,

students are taking part in the conceptual design of a Police Station similar to the new one that recently opened on Hamilton Mountain. In cooperation with the Architect and Hamilton Police Services, the fifth semester class has a complete set of drawings and have enjoyed a tour of the facility to learn about the needs of such a building. By the end of this semester they will develop a conceptual design of the building, from which the best three or four designs will be carried through to sixth semester for more detailed work. 1.17 Kim Hill, Aboriginal Counsellor, in cooperation and collaboration with the Aboriginal

Student Services, assisted with the organization and implementation of the 8th Annual Welcoming Social. The Welcoming Social brings approximately 280 high school students from London, Rama, Cayuga, Caledonia, Waterford, Brantford, and Hagersville to Mohawk College. Kim Hill and Sher Martin appeared on CKCO TV outlining the activities and rationale for the Welcoming Social and the importance for Aboriginal Students to feel welcomed and supported in a post-secondary environment. The event included a performance by Derek Miller, Aboriginal Artist of the year, Juno Award winner. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

1.18 At the request of the Native Community Care Coordinator, Kim Hill offered a

Personality Type Inventory to twenty first-year students. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

1.19 Business and Industry Development continue to deliver a wide range of

management and employee development training programs to corporate clients. Included in our activity during the January-February period are the following projects: Dofasco Inc.: on-going delivery of leadership development and financial management workshops, including “Creativity and Innovation”, “Facilitation Skills”, “Report Writing Skills”, “Presentation kills”, and “Retirement Planning”; Jungbunzlauer Inc.: “Developing Effective Teams”, a 30-hour course within the Manufacturing Leadership Certificate Program; this course got off to a successful start in January; Canada Customs and Revenue Agency : “Accounting – Level 2”: a 39 -hour, 13-week, training program delivered to 2 groups of employees from January to April; Mechanical Contractors Association of Hamilton: “Crisis Management”, a 2-session, 6-hour workshop for members of the association, in

February; Raymond Industrial Equipment Ltd.: “Continuous Improvement Processes”, a 30-hour course within the Manufacturing Leadership Certificate Program; this course runs from February to April; Hamilton Hydro: “MS Project:, a series of workshops delivered to staff in the Engineering Department; “Manage Stress and Stay Sane”, a one-day workshop delivered 4 times to employees working on the front line with customers; “Coaching and Development People ”: a 30-hour Distance Education course within the Manufacturing Leadership Certificate Program; this course got off to a successful start in January; Shared Services Bureau, Government of Ontario: on-going delivery of generic skills workshops, including “Creative Problem Solving” and “Facilitation Skills for Group Problem Solving”; Nova Steel Processing Centre: completion of a 6-month long project involving the delivery of multiple sessions of on-site computer workshops, including Windows, MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Publisher; Maintenance Management Professional Certificate Program: on-going delivery via Continuing Education of courses within the program; the winter semester saw “Maintenance Management Skills and Techniques” and “Production and Operations Management for the Maintenance Manager” roll out; Greenwich Metal Cleaning Services: delivery of an 18-hour “Supervisory Skills” program; Thunder Bay Regional Hospital (TBRH) : delivery of the Distance Education version of “Administration of Medication – RPNs” began in February for 37 TBRH employees. 1.20 Sue Pratt, a wood carving student and a professor in the Child and Youth Worker

Program won third prize–novice from the Canadian Woodcarving Association for her carving of a loon. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services].

1.21 The Creative and Applied Arts department received a number of calls with

employment opportunities for students. Requests were made for three book illustrators, one custom painter for furniture, five wedding photographers and one instructor for a senior’s centre. Appropriate names were forwarded with permission. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services].

1.22 The students in the Faculty of Continuing Education’s Volunteer Management 1

course partnered with the Board of Directors of the Sound of Music Festival in Burlington to provide case studies that, according to the organization’s Chair and Executive Director “were polished and professionally done” and “will definitely have a positive impact on our organization.” [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice-President, Student and Community Services]

1.23 The students in the Faculty of Continuing Education’s Special Events program worked with Goodwill, the Amity Group, to assist with one of their special events. Feedback from the staff at Goodwill stated, “They were truly the best group I have ever worked with. 1.24 MoCoMotion Days were held at Brantford, Stoney Creek and the I.A.H.S. These

events were well attended and a great success. Over 240 faculty and staff were trained on the use of the portal. [Submitted by Dick Raha, Vice President, Finance & Administration]

1.25 A pilot project in Group Calendar Management was launched, with MEC officers

and their assistants being trained on the use of MoCoMotion for calendar management and meeting requests. The intent is to promote the use of online communications and information management, while allowing IT to gain experience supporting group collaboration. EXPAND PARTNERSHIPS AND LINKAGES 2.1 Social Service Worker Program students Krista Kyle, Dina Paparo and Ryan

Campbell, held an information session at Common Hour to share their Japan Exposure Program experiences with students and staff. The presentation was well attended and those in attendance were impressed with the student’s comments. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

2.2 On February 19th, the second year Tourism and Travel students attended a

Career Fair hosted by Niagara College's Hospitality and Tourism Department in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Employers from the Tourism sector were also in attendance advertising their job availability and accepting student resumes. It was a great opportunity for Mohawk College students to make contacts and meet with company representatives. A number of our students secured interview dates with various companies. 2.3 Acknowledgement was received from Interval House for the donation of hats,

mittens and toys collected by the faculty of the Business Studies Department. Faculty members Wendy Fisher and Jane Cooper were instrumental in organizing, collecting and delivering the donated items. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

2.4 Louise Bockner, Dean, Business and International Education and Leo Barsony,

Coordinator, International Education returned from a one week trip to Mexico. A Letter of Intent was signed with Universidad Lunes a Viernes in Campeche Mexico. The intent of the agreement is to further service graduates from the Mexican University who are interested in completing post-diploma programs at Mohawk College. The areas of interest are International Business Management and Human Resources Management. Meetings were also held with the Minister of Tourism from the State of Campeche to discuss offering specialized programs from the Tourism and Travel Program. A meeting was also held with members of the Pablo Garcia Foundation, which offers scholarships to Mexican students wishing to study outside of Mexico. The Foundation has tentatively set aside 5 scholarships for students wishing to study at Mohawk College. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

2.5 Professor Peter Maurin brought in Drew Craig, President of Craig Media (Toronto One Television) to discuss the challenges of licensing and starting a new digital TV station in a large market with second year Television students. Toronto One has over 600 employees and presents new job opportunities for our graduates. Mr. Craig also was interested in the possibility of partnering with Mohawk in producing some student content for broadcast, as well developing new graduate certificates programs with Craig Media Support. 2.6 In February, Mohawk College committed to a partnership with Wilfrid Laurier

University to refurbish the Odeon Theatre in Brantford for use in September 2004. Discussions have taken place, and will continue to solidify details of this relationship between the two institutions and the City of Brantford. Peter Vicano, of Vicano Construction, and Mohawk alumni, will be an integral part of the renovation and construction plans. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

2.7 A group of staff from the Faculty of Engineering Technology attended the third

annual Skills Canada - Ontario Fundraising dinner and silent auction on February 17, in Kitchener. The Mohawk College table was sponsored by the President’s office. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

2.8 Marilyn Bieksa, Chair Health Sciences and Human Services and Sandra Hanna,

Coordinator Personal Support Worker program attended ACCC's first National Homecare Training Providers Conference, "Coming of Age - Educating Canada's Unregulated Health Care Workers - Bridging the Gap from the Atlantic to the Pacific", in Ottawa, February 12-13. Dr. Robert Buckman, a world-class expert on interpersonal communications and a prolific author and television personality was the keynote speaker. 2.9 Rachel Matthews, Director of Student Development and Human Rights, was

accepted into the 2004 Bay Area Leadership Program. This program focuses on the development of the leadership competencies necessary for successful community leadership. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice-President, Student and Community Services]

2.10 Heather Drummond represented Mohawk College in the two-day

information/orientation experience at Camp Borden organized by the Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre, February 19 and 20, 2004. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

2.11 Mohawk College and Wilfred Laurier University Brantford campuses hosted the “Brantford Laurier Charity Hockey Challenge” in January. The game raised $1000 in support of Big Brothers of Brantford. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services].

2.12 Active Living Challenge Day was a tremendous success for Mohawk College.

Mohawk came in first place in the large College division with a total of 27,960 active minutes. The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) organized the Active Living Challenge with support from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation (Active Living) to promote active living and healthy lifestyles. 2.13 Mohawk College won silver medals in Mixed Doubles and Ladies Singles at the

OCAA Badminton Championships held February 14-15, 2004. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services].

2.14 The Brantford Campus hosted the Brantford City High School Basketball and

Volleyball Championships from February 16-20, 2004. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services].

2.15 Mohawk College hosted the 2004 OCAA Curling Championships at the Glendale

Golf and Curling Club February 19-22, 2004. Mohawk College won a Gold Medal in Mixed Curling, winning 7-6 against Algonquin in the mixed finals. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services].

2.16 Jim Vanderveken, Director, and Debbie DeDauw, Training Consultant with

Community Economic Development, attended the Burlington Economic Development Corporation’s luncheon event on February 24, 2004, hosted by Mayor Rob MacIsaac and featuring keynote speaker Mr. Paul Cellucci, United States Ambassador to Canada. The event attracted nearly 400 business and industry representatives from the Hamilton/Burlington region. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

2.17 Community Economic Development and Access Programs are working with a

consortium of community partners to provide service and assistance to workers being laid off due to the closure of the Levi Strauss plants in both Stoney Creek and Brantford. Both Return to Work Services and Employment Assessment Centre staff will be involved over the long term in helping Levi Strauss employees to become re-trained or re-employed. CED has been collaborating with Human Resources Development Canada’s (HRDC) and MTCU’s Labour Adjustment Services, the joint management/union Levi Strauss Action Centre, and the Levi Strauss Foundation to

2.18 The date of February 16, 2004 marked the start for the 6th consecutive Partners in

Promoting Summer Employment (PPSE) contract agreement between Mohawk College and Human Resources and Skills Development Brantford. The Summer Employment Program (SEP) directive will be to increase summer jobs and career related work experiences for students with Brant / Haldimand employers. 2.19 Community Economic Development was pleased to host a graduation ceremony on

February 20, 2004, honoring the 15 graduates from the 2nd Industrial Electrician – Pre-Apprenticeship Training program. In addition to the academic and trades specific training this 40 week initiative funded by the Government of Ontario included Basic Level 1 Common Core curriculum and an 8 week work experience component. Jean Miller, Training Consultant, Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU), Apprenticeship Branch, attended the ceremony. 2.20 The Community Economic Development Department has been awarded a contract

through the HRDC Local Labour Market Partnerships initiative to implement a TOWES (Test of Workplace Essential Skills) feasibility study. The study will determine the most effective way to introduce and implement TOWES in Hamilton, by assessing community, employer and individual client response and receptivity to this new Essential Skills tool. 2.21 The Community Economic Development/Access Department, in cooperation with

Ontario Works Brant completed another six-week Future Directions program (previously called LiteracyWorks) to assist Ontario Works participants to assess and determine their level of literacy and numeracy skills in preparation for future educational or employment opportunities. 3.2 On behalf of the Mohawk College Neighbourhood Committee, Michelle

Harkness, Director of Student Life and Ancillary Services, Karen Lavell, Manager of Student Life and Samara Young, MSA Director and second year student in the Police Foundations/Law & Security Program attended a symposium hosted by the City of Waterloo: “After the Double Cohort: Student-Community Relations”. Another member of the Mohawk College Neighbourhood Committee attended as well: Judy Downey, Coordinator of Standards and Licensing with the City of Hamilton. 3.3 Counsellors are continuing to offer the weekly Lunch and Learn Strategies for

Academic Success sessions. A small group of students attend regularly and are providing positive feedback regarding these sessions. Their biggest regret is that more students are not taking advantage of this opportunity. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

3.4 Counsellors have attended Information sessions with on-campus representatives

from Laurier, Laurentian/Algoma and Carleton Universities during the past month. These in-person consultations are helpful in equipping Counsellors to provide as much information and assistance as possible to students interested in exploring post-diploma/degree completion opportunities. 3.5 The weekly Return to School group sessions for prospective mature applicants to

the College continue to be well attended. The accompanying drop-in one-on-one counselling service is well-utilized, particularly by prospective applicants who are still unclear about their career direction and corresponding educational plans, and by those with international credentials who have complex questions regarding appropriate program selection based on previous training, admission requirements and possible transfers of credit. Prospective applicants are now also asking for clarification and assistance regarding post-application questions and concerns.

[Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services] 3.6 During the last month, the most prevalent client issues have dealt with stress

management; career counselling, including temperament preferences and interest inventory interpretations; university applications - diploma/degree completion; and academic problems including the need for tutorial assistance and reducing course loads. A number of students have asked for assistance in managing their stress and anxiety and determining how to access special considerations based on extenuating circumstances such as death in the family and/or illness. Students have also required assistance with: making decisions to withdraw and related career/life re-direction; financial crises including problems with OSAP; considering program changes; accessing systems information and understanding/managing institutional process; and English as a Second Language challenges and barriers. Students continue to access counselling for assistance for improving learning strategies, especially in such as areas as test preparation and writing and managing time, conflicting priorities and their academic workloads. Students continue to request assistance with personal issues such as: depression, panic attacks, sexuality, family abuse, independence, grief related concerns, self abuse, autism referral, and behavioural problems resulting in expulsion from class. In the course of responding to the various issues, consultation has occurred with Disabilities Services, Financial Aid, Medical Services, Admissions, colleagues and various academic coordinators, Chairs and Deans. 3.7 Counsellors at the IAHS facilitated several presentations during February. Two study

skills presentations were held at the request of Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) students on the topic of “life management”. The sessions dealt with managing multiple roles, managing stress and time management. A presentation was given to a Problem Based Leaning (PBL) class for third year students in Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc.N.). The topic requested was “Nursing and Burnout”. Some of the causes, warning signs and ways of managing burnout were discussed. The Counsellors also gave a half day Student Skills seminar to approximately 20 Personal Support Worker (PSW) students who would be starting their first classes the following week. This gave them an opportunity to meet each other, learn how to approach studying and evaluation at the college level before beginning their eighteen week program. 3.8 Aboriginal Counsellor, Kim Hill, continues to be available to Aboriginal students in

Fennell, Brantford and the Institute for Applied Health Sciences. It has been helpful to the students to be available to answer student questions in a timely fashion. Arrangements were made for Paulie Hill to offer her availability in the Brantford and

3.9 The Peer Tutor Program continues to be busy with many students applying and

3.10 Peter Young, Counsellor and Donna James, Coordinator, Peer Tutor Program,

3.11 Counsellor Jack Leon facilitated a general information session at the Brantford

Campus for students interested in post-diploma and degree completion opportunities. Brantford Campus also hosted liaison staff from Wilfred Laurier University/Brantford Campus. 3.12 Counsellor Jack Leon provided two Return to School Sessions at Brantford Campus

in February. One session was held during the day and one was held during the evening for the Brantford community. These sessions provided pre-admission process information and college prep and program information and financial assistance resources to potential applicants to Mohawk College. 3.13 Student Success Co-ordinator Jaynn Miller attended the Association of Canadian

Community Colleges symposium, ‘Mobilizing for Student Success: An Institutional Responsibility’, January 29-31, in Vancouver, British Columbia. The focus included: Taking Student Learning Seriously, Models of Institutional Mobilization for Student Success, The Brain and Learning, and Learning Communities. 3.16 Jaynn Miller provided the Mohawk Executive Committee with Corporate Student

Success documents in support of moving forward the College-wide student success focus at Mohawk College. Jaynn, along with Rachel Matthews and Carolyn Gray, met with President West-Moynes to discuss these materials and the requirements of corporate student success focus at Mohawk College. 3.17 Don Fraser, Student Success expert from Durham College, was invited to present

3.18 Medical Services staff participated in Student Appreciation Day on January 22, 2004

by distributing beverages (orange juice/water) at all three Health Clinics at Fennell, Stoney Creek and the IAHS. The students were very appreciative. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

3.19 Nurse Sandra Baskin traveled to the Brantford Campus to assist the new intake of

Personal Support Workers with their Communicable Disease Screening Forms. She was able to do the Tuberculosis skin testing, as well as provide the vaccine for Hepatitis B to those who required it. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

3.20 It's not every day when a university Dean of Engineering meets with college

students, but that's what occurred on February 11, 2004 when Mohawk College welcomed Dr. Henri Saliba from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. Dr. Saliba spoke to over 35 students during Common Hour about the opportunity for Mohawk 3-year Technology diploma graduates to obtain a Lakehead Bachelor of Engineering degree in Chemical, Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering in as little as two years of study. This event, organized by Betty Chou of the Recognition of Learning Office, Linda Epplett of the Dean's Office, Mohawk's Faculty of Engineering Technology and Susan Childs of Lakehead University's Faculty of Engineering, was followed by a reception for Dr. Saliba hosted by Mohawk Dean of Engineering Technology, Cheryl Jensen, and attended by students, faculty and staff. 3.21 On February 11, 2004, Jason Kovacs, a second-year Police Foundations student, welcomed Laurier Brantford's Holly Cox and Heather Bouillon to the Brantford Campus. Ms. Cox and Ms. Bouillon conducted the Common Hour presentation, “2 + 2 = Degree 4 You”, attended by over 30 students from the Law and Security Administration, Police Foundations and Graphics programs who learned more about degree completion opportunities under the Laurier-Mohawk articulation agreement. This event was the result of joint efforts by staff from the Recognition of Learning Office, Brantford Student Life and Brantford Registrar's Office and Aboriginal Student Services. 3.22 For the first time, Mohawk College welcomed recruitment and liaison representatives

from the following universities who conducted Student Common Hour and information sessions: Pia Chin and Karen McGowan of Carleton University, Ottawa, presenting Carleton Opportunities for College Graduates on February 4, 2004; Marty Kauhanen of Laurentian University, Sudbury, and Rachel Hill of Algoma University College (an affiliated college of Laurentian University), Sault Ste. Marie, presenting Diploma-to-Degree Transfer Programs on February 18, 2004. These visits were organized by the Recognition of Learning Office and involved Journalism and Television Broadcasting students providing Mohawk media coverage through Mohawk TV and Radio Station C101.5. Scheduled meetings were also arranged for the university representatives to meet with Counsellors and/or Program Co-ordinators and Class Advisors of the General Arts and Science and Tekarihwake programs. 3.23 The Grand Opening of the Brantford Student Lounge was held on February 18,

3.24 The Mohawk Students’ Association (MSA) and Board Of Governors (BOG) Student

Elections were held from February 16-20, 2004. Kyle Smith is the new MSA President and Lacey Williams is the new BOG Student Representative. Because of a computer problem, the results for the election of MSA Business Director were not recorded. A second election was held on March 1 and 2, 2004. 3.25 The financial services areas have completed their year-end planning; and,

3.27 Payroll Services issued 3,430 T4s and T4As to full-time and part-time

3.28 Payroll Services staff were trained on the new Pay Specialist software. The

3.29 The Finance Project Team members Dianna Creamer, Joanne Lack, Lisa Arnold

and Joanne Roberts focused on the implementation of Banner student and non-student receivables effective March 1st. Activities included testing during two mock registrations and testing right up to the go-live date, communicating cut-over procedures, setting up CORE cashier stations at all intake points, preparing documentation and training end users. Fennell Campus Room get underway Monday, March 8,2004. The Print Shop is operated by McMaster Media Productions under a consortium agreement originating in 1997. Other partners in this consortium include Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph's Healthcare. This arrangement with McMaster University was renewed following a review and tendering process for onsite printing services conducted early last year. Part of McMaster’s proposal included renovations of the Print Room to create a more professional store front quality and provide space to accommodate an onsite graphic design service. 3.43 The Manager, Facilities Planning and Property Services along with other College

staff visited the soon to be renovated Odeon Theatre building on Market Street in downtown Brantford. The facility will be jointly occupied by Mohawk College and Wilfred Laurier University. It is expected that the College will begin offering the recently approved Public Relations and Police Foundations one-year graduate certificate programs at this location. . A full-day retreat was held for Support Staff at the IAHS. Two different workshops on Managing Successful Change were presented with a total of 22 Support Staff in attendance.

The Staff Development Officer was invited to speak to the Grand River Employment and Training Centre, at the strategic planning session for all staff. The topic was “Employment Trends and Career Planning.” There were 25 people in attendance.

3.49 EMPLOYMENT EXPO On Tuesday, February 24, Lynda Garland and Kim Spurr from the Human Resources Division, and Betty Savoie from Student Recruitment and Awards, Registrar’s Office, participated in the 2004 Employment Expo held at the Hamilton Convention Centre. As many as 47 employers gathered at the Convention Centre to recruit, interview and hire qualified candidates. More than 4,500 people were in attendance.

Mohawk College provided prospective candidates with a copy of current job postings for vacant positions that qualified candidates can apply for through Mohawk’s recruitment process. This was an excellent opportunity to profile Mohawk College, not only as an employer of choice in our community, but to promote the College’s post-secondary programs and Continuing Education courses. PRESERVE THE COLLEGE’S FINANCIAL STABILITY 4.1 Mohawk College was recently awarded $777,263 from the Apprenticeship

Enhancement Fund competitive process. Four of the six proposals submitted by the Faculty of Engineering Technology were approved. This brings the total allocated to Mohawk this fiscal year for enhancement of our apprenticeship - and also our postsecondary programming – to $1,085,209. We received $307,946 from the base AEF funding in June 2003. Thanks to all staff in the Faculty, as well as Anthony D’Alessandro, for their hard work preparing the proposals. 4.2 The new @ MoCo.café is now open in the iWing and is located in the new e-Library,
