1.2 Product Overview

1.2.1 Description

The‎Border‎Gateway‎(BG,‎especially‎BG4250)‎is‎part‎of‎a‎decomposed‎model‎of‎Acme‎Packet‟s‎Session Border Controller (SBC). Normally it covers both network elements: the Session Controller (SC) and the Border Gateway (BG). Acme‎Packet‟s‎family‎of‎session‎border‎controllers‎may‎be‎configured‎to‎support‎either‎SBC‎model: Integrated and Decomposed.

As an integrated SBC, the SBC tightly integrates session layer border control and media control functions within the platform. It is described in the Projecting Handbook of SD4250.

As a decomposed SBC, the session layer border control functions and the media control functions to be physically separated via a standards-based H.248 control interface. Specific configuration options in the decomposed model include:

•‎Session Controller (SC) – multi-protocol session layer border control and security

functions controlling the BG or 3rd

party Packet-to-Packet gateway(s) via H.248

•‎Border Gateway (BG) – Packet-to-Packet gateway performing policy enforcement

functions and NA(P)T controlled by the SC or 3rd

party session control elements via H.248.

In IMS 5.0 the BG4250 represents the Border Gateway Function (BGF). Together with additional signaling logic in the CFX-5000 the BGF is forming the SBC.

1.2.2 High availability system deployment

High availability (HA) system deployment

Border Gateways are deployed in pairs to deliver continuous high availability (HA) for interactive communication services. The HA design guarantees, that no sessions (calls) are dropped in the event of any single point failure. Furthermore, the Net-Net BG HA design provides for full media and call state to be shared across the HA node. The solution uses a design, where the two systems share a virtual MAC address and virtual IP address (see diagram below). Active System: One system is automatically chosen to be the primary or Active system, and will be the system used to process signaling and media traffic. Standby System: The backup or Standby system is in a standby mode, and is fully synchronized with the Active systems session status. The Active system will be running health checks against itself for internal process issues, as well as IP connectivity issues. If it detects that requires it to be removed from service, it will indicate this to the Standby BG, who will then send out a message using the virtual MAC, establishing that MAC on another physical port within the Ethernet switch. To the upstream router, the MAC and IP are still alive, so existing sessions and new sessions continue to flow, but now through the Standby system, with no dropped sessions. In addition to the Active system performing internal health checks and media checks, the Standby system is also monitoring the Active system via a directly connected link, as well as over the Ethernet links. If the Standby system must take over session support, it will also send out an SNMP trap indicating to network management that it has done so.

2.1.18 Rack integration

Rack integration (max. 3 HA-Systems, optical or electrical transmission):

- In a high availability scenario a rack can be filled with up to 6 Border Gateway devices (3 Active and 3 Standby). Project specific configurations are available on request.

- Due to redundancy and safety aspects a rack have to contain 4 L2-Switches (two for Access and two for Core) and 2 OAM-Switches.

- To ensure fully redundancy the primary L2-Switches are connected to the Active Border Gateways and the secondary L2-Switches are connected with the Standby Border Gateways.

- At every OAM-Switch 3 electrical ports (10/100Base-T) for connections to Acme BG OAM Interfaces are necessary.

- For connection between each Active BG and Standby BG two crossed Ethernet Cables (for 10/100Base-T) are required (V45591-A282-A…).

- Each L2-Switch needs at most 6 x 1Gbit for uplinks, the same number for the cross links between the L2-Switches (minimum 2), and maximal three 2x1 Gbit to the Border Gateways (BG1 – BG3). Moreover for connection to PCS and DF3 (LI), 1 Gbit is needed in each case.

2.1.19 Acme Packet BG 4250 PSW (Platform Software) Maintenance

All commercial deployments of Acme Packet BG 4250 must order the corresponding, mandatory, Acme Packet BG 4250 PSW Maintenance package.

The Acme Packet BG 4250 PSW Maintenance package covers all commercially deployed Acme Packet BG 4250 components over a period of one (1) year under Service Levels as defined for the NSN features / functions described in the OLA agreement between NSN Global Services and NSN Technical Support.

The standard Service Level defined for Acme Packet BG‎4250‎‎is‎“SILVER”‎level.‎NSN‎holds‎a‎global Maintenance Support Agreement (MSA) with Acme Packet.

2.1.19.1 Initial 1st Year Customer Price Calculation And Ordering Process

The Customer Price for the Acme Packet BG 4250 PSW Maintenance package must be manually calculated by the NSN customer sales team by dividing the Internal Reference Price (IRP) total of the HW/SW (in Euros) by one thousand (1000) and then rounding up to the nearest integer and then purchasing that many Acme Packet BG 4250 PSW Sales Items [L32001-C2876-X]. The calculated quantity of Acme Packet BG 4250 PSW items must be manually added to the List of Materials. The calculated Acme Packet BG 4250 PSW Maintenance Price ensures coverage of Technical Support (level3 SW Maintenance support) and Acme Packet BG 4250 support costs.

2.1.19.2 Annual Renewal of PSW Maintenance Orders after 1st Year

Customer Price Calculation and Ordering Process for the annual renewal of the Acme Packet BG 4250 PSW Maintenance Orders are the same as described above for the initial 1st Year.

32/63 NWS PM P PSM VIPT PL Border Gateway 4250 Version 11 For internal use

Additionally, Technical Support must receive from the NSN customer sales team a copy of the SAP renewal order with the applicable quantity of Sales Items [L32001-C2876-X] for the corresponding Acme Packet BG 4250 PSW Maintenance package before expiry. Technical Support engages globally with Acme Packet in order to provide ongoing support beyond the initial one (1) year time frame. If the annual renewal order is not received on time continued Acme Packet support cannot be insured.

2.1.19.3 System upgrades and PSW Maintenance

Upgrades - new features, etc, but no more # of subscribers, like upgrade from AS to HA

The Customer Price for the Acme Packet BG 4250 PSW Maintenance package of upgrage will be the difference between initial sales and maintenance costs calculation and upgrade sales and maintenance cost calculation.

Expansions - same release/version but additional equipment HW/SW is needed for more # of subscribers, like upgrade of CC

The same calculation rules for the Customer Price for the Acme Packet BG 4250 PSW Maintenance package applies for that additional equipment.

Acme Packet Border Gateway BG 4250 Configuration and Engineering Rules Status: 04/08/2009 For detailed calculation please use the ProjectView tool. http://projectview-hp.inside.nokiasiemensnetworks.com/pvindex.html

Configuration in Project View Tool: This section provides some information on the system limits and the variables that affect the dimensioning of the Border Gateway Equipment. It is highly recommended that sizing and configuration of this equipment be done in the NSN Project View tool, available to all NSN regional teams. New‎users‎will‎need‎to‎use‎the‎“Registration‎Form”‎Link‎on‎the‎left‎side‎of‎the‎page‎to‎apply‎for‎a‎Project View Account. In case of IT issues accessing the Project View Tool itself, please reach your IT department first. Please‎note‎that‎users‎located‎in‎NSN‟s‎“orange‎network”‎might‎need‎to‎use‎the‎Business‎Partner‎Portal in order to have access to the Project View tool. (https://bpsn.inside.nokiasiemensnetworks.com). After login in the BPP, the Project View tool is located‎under‎the‎folder‎“customer”‎of‎the‎Business‎Partner‎Portal‎Page. For guidance regarding the usage of Project View tool to configure Acme Packet equipment, please also consider to contact: Mr. Ioannis Mouroulis, +30 2106247616, [email protected] Border Gateway BG4250 Engineering limits Current NSN FMC solutions use the Acme Packet BG 4250 V4.1.3, V6.5.0 (sometime referred also as V4.5.0 ) as an H.248 controlled border gateway product. The control part is performed by the CFX/PCS network elements of the NSN IMS System. The BG4250 is available in Standalone (non-redundant) and in HA (High Availability) configurations. BG 4250 absolute maximum measured limits in Standalone (one box) are:

75 calls / second (at an average of 4 H.248 transactions per call)

30000 concurrent media flows without hosted NAT

15000 concurrent media flows with 100% hosted NAT

4G media bandwidth (actually, only 3,8G should be allocated)

36/63 NWS PM P PSM VIPT PL Border Gateway 4250 Version 11 For internal use

BG 4250 absolute maximum measured limits per HA cluster (2 boxes) are:

55 calls / second (at an average of 4 H.248 transactions per call)

30000 concurrent media flows without hosted NAT

15000 concurrent media flows with 100% hosted NAT

4G media bandwidth (actually, only 3,8G should be allocated) A special NSN UR (NSN Unrestricted) configuration is now also available which doubles the CAPS performance of a BG system (standalone or HA) by doubling the quantity of equipment, at a low incremental cost. It can be assumed that an NSN UR configuration, doubles all the limits stated above, both for standalone and HA systems because it doubles the count of boxes in use. The calls /second (CAPS) figure provided, use the assumption that each call has either 3 or 5 H.248 transactions: 3 for terminating calls, 5 for originating calls. This is due to the impact of http digest being applied to originating calls. On average, 50% of calls are assumed to be of type originating. This leads to an average of 4 transactions per call in total. Other call flows (e.g. unsuccessful calls) have not been considered. In some cases this assumption may not be correct, e.g. when digest authentication is not used or only used for some SIP messages. In‎NSN‎standard‟s‎IMS‎model,‎the‎dimensioning‎and‎configuration‎of‎a‎standalone‎BG‎4250‎is‎not‎dependant of the percentage of subscribers using HNAT (as opposed to a regular Session Border Controller like the SD 4250). However the dimensioning is affected, as usual, by other traffic model parameters such as the MHT (Mean Holding Time in seconds), as illustrated in the examples below:

Notes:

This standard model does not include the impact of multimedia calls (e.g. video) and codec bandwidth. Please contact technical sales if solution requirements go beyond simple voice calls.

In general, the speech codecs in use are irrelevant, even in cases with very long call holding times (180 sec). Bandwidth bottlenecks can only arise and need to be considered when a large share of video calls is involved.

Media flows with HNAT enabled require a separate CAM entry for RTCP, which means that the hardware can support only a maximum of 15k flows with 100% HNAT.

Licenses are available in the following capacity steps only (concurrent calls) : 4k, 8k, 12k, and UR (Unrestricted)

The NSN standard configuration of the BG HW includes 4 GE interfaces. Using G.711@20ms the bandwidth of 4 GE is sufficient for approximately 20000 concurrent calls on one BG (one box). Exceeding 20k concurrent calls is possible only when codecs with lower bandwidth and/or silence suppression are used.

The GE interfaces required are calculated based on G.711@20ms (codec bandwidth 95,2 kbps) and assume separation of access and core interfaces.

3 Physical Interfaces

Interfaces

Front views:

The‎BG4250‎can‎accept‎three‎types‎of‎physical‎interface‎cards‎in‎the‎chassis‟s‎front‎network‎interface‎card‎slots.

The three options are:

One-port GigE optical card

Two-port GigE optical card

10/100 Ethernet card (4 ports)

In the Border Gateway packaged systems two 2-port GigE optical cards will be preferred. This optical GigE cards with 1000Base-SX transceivers can accept an LC fiber connector using either single mode or multimode cable (for details look into the System cabling document).

Another possibility is to use a copper transceiver for 1000Base-T.
