Build a fort: Use chairs, blankets, boxes, pillows, sheets, stuffed animals.
Baking: Anything that they can mix, roll and like to eat. Pizza is also a great project, either making your own dough or getting the fresh dough atthe grocery store! Let them sprinkle their own toppings. You can also moldthe dough into fun shapes, like a bear, a heart or star. Then decorate the shapes with favorite toppings.
Playing with dried rice and beans: Set the kids up with some filled bowls, let them scoop, pour, funnel, spoon and sort into other containers. Or for older kids, get divided containers and fill the "activity boxes" with pasta, yarn for stringing, stickers, crayons and paper. Let their own ideas come through of what to do with the items.
Make Books: Have the kids (over 2 years old) tell you a story and you type it up. Print 1-3 sentences on each page. Then let them draw the accompanying pictures and add stickers.
Play with Scissors: Seriously. 2 year olds love to cut paper just to cutpaper. Safety scissors work great for this project.
Puppet Shows: Hang a blanket between two chairs. Either you or the kids stand behind it with puppets, stuffed animals, legos, whatever. Even if the show is not much of a show, it keeps them entertained.
Play Dough: Homemade versions are easy and recipes are available if you do a quick google search. The recipes with cream-of-tarter work best. Bring out the cookie cutters and tools.
Take a Bath: That's right, give the kids a bath in the middle of the day.Add kitchen stuff to make it different.
Make Necklaces: For pasta: rotini and wheels work best because the holes are larger. Dye the pasta different colors by putting 1/4 c. rubbing alcohol, food coloring and pasta in a zip lock bag. Shake till it's all covered and turnthe bag over every 20 minutes or so for 1 - 2 hours. Then pour out the liquid and spread the pasta on cookie sheets lined with paper towels to let dry.Or make necklaces out of Cheerios.
Go outside anyway!! Get the kids in their boots and jackets and umbrellas, or in the jogging stroller and end up at a cafe for hot chocolate.
