This activity is addressed to mathematical researchers. Its aim is toinvite them to reflect on their role in the increasingly important battleabout communicating about science. In most countries, mathematics is notpresent at par in the media with other basic sciences. This is especially trueas far as the communication of outstanding new results, their significanceand perspectives of development of our field.

The main purpose is to nurture the debate on why an efficient commu-nication about mathematics, as a thriving part of science, is needed andhow it can be achieved.

The format is to have some prominent mathematicians and non mathe-maticians who contributed to this question share their experience by givinga short presentation (about 15 minutes each). The total length of the event

Page 26: Actividades Matem¶aticas - santafe-conicet.gov.ar · Actividades Matem¶aticas Congresos * ¶Indice de Congresos † The Sixth International Conference on Teaching Statistics - ICOTS7

40 junio 2006

will be two hours, including a debate with the audience at mid time andafter all presentations have been made.Content: As a science, Mathematics is developing at an unprecedentedpace, expanding into new territories and playing a key role in many break-throughs and crucial achievements in other sciences. It also has a prominentimpact in spectacular technological advances of relevance for our daily life.

These new developments need to be presented to broader audiences inorder not to create bottlenecks and to trigger creativity and connections ofall sorts.In the panel discussion, we plan to analyse the importance of com-munication and skills required to contribute to it successfully from severalpoints of view, for instance:

- To secure an efficient and productive collaboration with professionalsof all kinds;

- To take up the challenge of making the new opportunities appealingto young people;

- To make the case for the value of fundamental mathematical researchas major ingredient for really creative future developments, including out-side mathematics;

- To ensure dissemination of mathematical knowledge and know-how topractitioners of other disciplines and to industrial specialists;

- To discuss obstacles encountered to have access to some media and toobtain the necessary funding.

Friday, August 25, 18:00-20:00Brief description of the activity“In addition to the current state of knowledge about the learning of

Mathematics and its aims in today’s society, the main point of discussionwill centre onways of improving the process of learning, and especially therole of e-Learning technologies in this process. Participants will first beacquainted with the situation of e-Learning Mathematics as of August,2006, including distance-learning or open university courses, and then withthe areas where e-Learning is likely to develop. Finally, consideration willbe given to the impact of new learning techniques on the role of the neweducators in mathematics”.

IMU Awards and Prizes

The IMU has been awarding the Fields Medals - generally consideredas the “Nobel Prize for mathematics” - for fundamental contributions tomathematics since 1936 and the Nevanlinna Prize for outstanding work inthe filelds of theoretical computer science since 1982. The Nevanlinna Prizeand up to four Fields Medals are awarded every four years at the openingof ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians. The GaussPrize will be awarded in the same manner.

With the Gauss Prize, the IMU is broadening the range of its awards,now including the influence of mathematics to other disciplines. The awardceremony will include an overview of the achievements of the prize-winner.The presentation of the mathematical work will be addressed to the generalpublic as well as journalists, so that all may appreciate the importance ofmathematics for everyday life.

* Fields MedalAt the 1924 International Congress of Mathematicians in Toronto, a res-

olution was adopted that at each ICM, two gold medals should be awardedto recognize outstanding mathematical achievement. Professor J. C. Fields,a Canadian mathematician who was Secretary of the 1924 Congress, later

Page 28: Actividades Matem¶aticas - santafe-conicet.gov.ar · Actividades Matem¶aticas Congresos * ¶Indice de Congresos † The Sixth International Conference on Teaching Statistics - ICOTS7

42 junio 2006

donated funds establishing the medals which were named in his honor.Consistent with Fields’s wish that the awards recognize both existing workand the promise of future achievement, it was agreed to restrict the medalsto mathematicians not over forty at the year of the Congress. In 1966 itwas agreed that, in light of the great expansion of mathematical research,up to four medals could be awarded at each Congress.

* Rolf Nevanlinna PrizeThe Rolf Nevanlinna Prize in mathematical aspects of information sci-

ence was established by the Executive Committee of the InternationalMathematical Union IMU in April 1981. It was decided that the prizeshould consist of a gold medal and a cash prize similar to the ones asso-ciated with the Fields Medal and that one prize should be given at eachInternational Congress of Mathematicians.

More recently, the Executive Committee of IMU clarified that the Nevan-linna Prize is to be awarded for outstanding contributions in MathematicalAspects of Information Sciences, including:

All mathematical aspects of computer science, including complexity the-ory, logic of programming languages, analysis of algorithms, cryptography,computer vision, pattern recognition, information processing and modellingof intelligence. Scientific computing and numerical analysis. Computa-tional aspects of optimization and control theory. Computer algebra.

* Gauss PrizeNew Prize in Science promotes Mathematics as a Key Technology

Mathematics is an important and ancient discipline -no one doubts that.However, it seems that only the experts know that mathematics is a drivingforce behind many modern technologies. The Gauss Prize has been createdto help the rest of the world realize this fundamental fact. The prize isto honor scientists whose mathematical research has had an impact out-side mathematics - either in technology, in business, or simply in people’severyday lives.

The Gauss Prize is awarded jointly by the Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung (DMV = German Mathematical Union) and the InternationalMathematical Union (IMU), and administered by the DMV. The prize con-sists of a medal and a monetary award (currently valued at EUR 10,000).

Page 29: Actividades Matem¶aticas - santafe-conicet.gov.ar · Actividades Matem¶aticas Congresos * ¶Indice de Congresos † The Sixth International Conference on Teaching Statistics - ICOTS7

The source of the prize is the surplus from the International Congress ofMathematicians (ICM’98) held in Berlin.

The official announcement of the establishment of the prize takes placeon 30 April 2002, the 225th anniversary of the birth of Carl Friedrich Gauss,after whom the award is named. The prize is to be awarded every four years,at the International Congress of Mathematicians, with the first award tobe presented at the Congress in 2006. The laureates will be chosen by ajury selected by the IMU.

Recent advances in Free Boundary Problems and related topics

Venue: Grand Hotel Bellavista (Levico Terme - Trento), september 14 -16, 2006.

Free boundary problems are boundary value problems for differentialequations that are defined in a domain whose boundary is a priori unknown,and is accordingly named a free boundary. Problems of this sort arise in alarge number of phenomena of applicative interest.

This meeting is organized in the framework of the activity of a projecton free boundary problems funded by the MIUR (Italian Ministry for theUniversity and the Reasearch).

This project started in 1998, and already organized the meetings ofSanta Margherita Ligure (2000), Trento (2002), Montecatini (2004).

The present meeting is in the framework of the activities of the CIRM(Centro Internazionale per la Ricerca Matematica) of Trento, that will alsoprovide to its funding.

Resumen:Algebraic statistics advocates the use of algebraic geometry, commu-

tative algebra, and geometric combinatorics as tools for making statisticalinferences.

The starting point for this connection is the observation that most sta-tistical models for discrete random variables are, in fact, algebraic varieties.While some of the varieties that appear are classical varieties (like Segrevarieties and toric varieties), most are new, and there are many challengingopen problems about the algebraic structure of these varieties.

These lectures will provide an introduction to algebraic statistics, em-phasizing the interesting algebraic questions that arise, as well as describingthe statistical consequences of the algebraic analysis.Programa:

1) Statistical models are algebraic varieties2) Log-linear models, toric varieties, and Markov bases
