October 1 (register by 9/1)

November 5 (register by 10/7)

December 3 (register by 11/3)

January 21 (register by 12/21)

March 11 (register by 2/10)

(no subject area exams this date)

May 6 (register by 4/7)

June 3 (register by 5/9)

There are plenty of free resources to help prepare for both the SAT and ACT exams. Be sure to pay attention to deadlines, plan ahead, and try your best. Never take an exam without studying “just to see” how you’ll do, ugh.

Take a look at the links below, and try some of them out: https://www.khanacademy.org/sat https://sat.collegeboard.org/practice/sat-practice-test http://www.actstudent.org/testprep/

Seniors should have already taken both the SAT and ACT at least once. If not, depending on college application deadlines, you must sign up ASAP for the upcoming fall exams. (Check with your anticipated college: some schools allow the SAT/ACT exam to be taken immediately after their application is due as long as scores are sent, but that varies: do not assume this is the case!) Juniors should also be preparing for these exams. Juniors should begin registering once they have their PSAT results to study from and even the results from the mock ACT we offer to have an idea of what needs improvement.

MDCPS is offering an ESE Family Forum and Exposition in the south area on Saturday, October 29th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Robert Morgan Educational Center.

Among other sessions include information regarding how to qualify and apply for testing accommodations for the SAT and ACT exams. Both testing organizations are

separate and accommodations need to be applied for separately: they are not guaranteed. This seminar will help explain the process.

TERRA Academy: Biomedical Research

Anticipated major: Communications: Marketing and Public Relations with a minor in International Business

Financial aid package: Presidential Scholarship ($18,000) Various grants ($6,000) and some help with FAFSA.

Most challenging college coursework thus far: Probably just the large papers. The challenging part is figuring out exactly what the professor wants from the paper. But once you understand that it's not so bad!

Biggest surprise about the college experience: The amount of independence I have. I am completely in charge and when/where/why/how I do things 24/7 and it's pretty awesome.

Advice to current Wolves: Get involved in the university as much as possible. It's a great way to meet people while adding to your resume. Also try as much as possible to balance work and play. You can have both, you just have to know when it's time for what.

(College visits continued on the next page…)

All visits will take place in the University Center unless

otherwise specified. If interested in attending, apply online no later than a week

before the visit.

There are many helpful events, meetings, and college visits taking place throughout the year. Additionally, juniors and seniors need to be paying close attention to all deadlines, from testing to applications to scholarships, as they seem to approach at warp speed. Please be sure to check terrawolves.com and click on the College Advising tabs regularly to keep up with the latest information to prepare you for life after TERRA. There are suggested timelines by grade and an application checklist for seniors that should help keep your college process organized and efficient. Let’s hope.

If you are interested in attending a college visit, please submit your request online at terrawolves.com under the College Presentations link of the College Advising tab. Make sure to print the online pass before you submit, which will serve as the hard copy for your teacher to sign if they choose to release you. It is entirely at their discretion to allow your release, and you’re obviously responsible for all work missed during your absence, no exceptions. Presentations are scheduled for one hour maximum, and you will return to class immediately following. Only students who have registered online and have obtained permission from their teachers will be allowed to attend a college visit. Anyone abusing this policy will no longer be invited to attend college visits during the school day. Before requesting to attend a college visit, please be sure to research the school to make sure that the school is a possible fit for you. Google their websites, read reviews, and take Youtube campus tours. Come to the visit prepared to ask questions and learn answers.

You must submit a brag sheet before asking or emailing a college or scholarship recommendation to a teacher or counselor. Many applications include unique questions that cannot be answered by your student data alone; be sure to give your recommender enough background information to allow them to complete a comprehensive, positive recommendation. Without this information, your recommender may not be able to answer or comment on certain required fields, which ultimately affects your overall acceptance or award. Sample brag sheets are available for download on the terrawolves.com site under the College Advising link. Help US help YOU! Also, ask teachers who know you best (and with plenty of notice). Letters of recommendation are intended to benefit you; asking a teacher who barely knows you or who’s teaching a class you’re doing poorly in will not benefit you. Allow a week minimum. Rome was not built in a day. (Google that, and take it to heart.)

Volume II, October 2016

Free Application for Federal Student Aid: This application opens on October 1st, 2016: DO IT as soon as possible.

https://fafsa.gov/

Completing the FAFSA is the first step in applying for your share of most federal, state, and college-provided financial aid for students, including scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study programs. It stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid, and it is free to complete! Never pay for a service or website that requires payment!! The FAFSA is used by aid providers to determine the amount of the student's Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which is the amount that they expect the student's family could contribute toward the student's college education. EFC varies from student to student since it is based on the specific financial situation of the student and the student's parents. The FAFSA covers various areas such as the student's family situation, the student's educational background, the student's educational plans and prospective colleges, the student's finances, and the student's parents' finances. Once the FAFSA application is completed and filed, a federal processor will examine all the information provided and pass the examination results on to the financial aid offices of the preferred colleges listed on the FAFSA. Immediately begin on your FAFSA by going to www.fafsa.gov using your tax information from the most recent 2015 filing. Using the IRS Data Transfer Tool will speed up the processing of FAFSA’s that have been selected for income verification. File the online FAFSA as soon as possible, using the FSA ID you already acquired. File as soon as possible even if you have not yet submitted an application – college aid packages are available on a first-come, first-served basis and they WILL run out of maximum funds to offer you – do not delay filing the FAFSA… After you complete the FAFSA: You will receive a copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR). You MUST read the written comments found at the beginning of the SAR. Take note of any errors mentioned in this section and take IMMEDIATE action if mistakes have been found. If you have questions about these SAR errors, please contact the financial aid office at your college for instructions. Any delays in correcting SAR errors will delay you receiving your financial aid award letter. This may seriously impact on the amount of financial aid that you will receive.

TERRA is offering a very helpful parent FAFSA marathon on 10/6, from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. in conjunction with the Miami-Dade College’s Financial Aid office to assist parents with online FAFSA completion. Sign up

online under the College Advising tab of the terrawolvesew.com website for a 30-minute appointment. Walk-ins are welcome, though appointments are preferred.

Raise.me: DO THIS, TERRA, DO THIS. Raise.me helps students in 9th - 12th grades to discover colleges and earn scholarships for their academic and extracurricular achievements throughout high school. These bite-sized scholarships are called “Micro-Scholarships”. When students add achievements to their Portfolio on Raise.me, they could be eligible to earn Micro-Scholarships towards our partner colleges. These achievements can include good grades, participating in clubs, playing on a sports team, volunteering, or even starting a club. They can include AP or IB courses, honors classes, and college-level courses, too. Students can build a Portfolio of their achievements, Follow Colleges, and watch their scholarship earnings pile up. The Micro-Scholarships students can earn on Raise.me vary depending on what each college chooses to offer. Some Micro-Scholarships can range from anywhere between $500 to over $1,000 dollars. For example, if a student gets an A in an English class, he or she could be eligible to receive scholarships from dozens of colleges on Raise.me. When students achieve a goal and earn Micro-Scholarships, they can view their earnings in their personal Portfolio on Raise.me any time throughout high school. Each college has a different deadline for students who wish to earn scholarships on Raise.me. If students decide to apply for admission to a college where they have earned Micro-Scholarships, they must follow a college before its Follow Deadline and make sure their Portfolio is as complete as possible to ensure their information is fully submitted to the college. If the student is admitted to the college, their scholarship earnings will automatically be included in their financial aid package. More information and profile logon: www.raise.me
