MY DEFINING MOMENT….

•  Grew up in Schenectady NY in a medical family

•  Majored in Math because it was easy

•  But an internship at MIT on Apollo 11 taught me my future was not in math or computers

•  My future was on the people side of where folks spent most of their time

•  What I am most passionate about is helping people be at their leadership best

TODAY’S OBJECTIVE

•  Share ideas I am passionate about

•  In a manner that reflects Darden’s traditions and approach to learning

•  With the goal of sparking new ideas, generating a different perspective or simply raising up your resident knowledge

WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL DAY? (SUBMIT ANSWERS IN THE CHAT)

It most likely parallels (and more) what I’ve learned from others. Does this look familiar?

•  Lots of meetings – scheduled and pop-ups?

•  Surprises and last minute “crises”?

•  Requests for information/data needed yesterday?

•  Phone call/email requests for folks wanting something?

•  Scheduled lunch meetings, drinks?

•  Say to yourself - “If I can just get through today…..”

If you agree, why are we so busy but not accomplishing

what we want?

THE SHORT ANSWER: We never balance activity with

the opportunities to learn

Copyright 2018

Page 15: ACTIVITY AS A SURROGATE FOR RESULTS

15

•  Chaotic

•  Stressful

•  Emotional

•  High risk

•  Dangerous

•  Unpredictable

•  Lots of unknowns

•  Physically demanding – hot, smokey

•  Quick decisions on limited information required

•  Firefighters follow chain of command

•  Established protocols

•  Firefighters work in teams, teamwork high

What’s it like on the Fire Grounds?

Page 16: ACTIVITY AS A SURROGATE FOR RESULTS

16

•  Organized and calm

•  “Family like” – firefighters do everything one does when they live together – cook, clean, watch TV, exercise, talk

•  Do maintenance

•  Practice and rehearse – learn new fire fighting techniques, review procedures

•  Conduct After Action reviews – no blame, no hierarchy

RESULT = Relationships and trust

You cannot be effective on the fire grounds unless you spend

time in the fire house

Copyright 2018

Page 19: ACTIVITY AS A SURROGATE FOR RESULTS

19

•  Often not valued •  Too much time •  Don’t see results •  Don’t know how

•  It’s exciting and challenging •  It’s what we are trained for •  It’s what we are paid for •  We get RESULTS – visible,

tangible things to point to

WHY MORE FIRE GROUNDS THAN FIRE HOUSE?

Copyright 2018

Page 20: ACTIVITY AS A SURROGATE FOR RESULTS

20

1.  Knowing your own firehouse -  What and where are the opportunities to think, gain perspectives, learn new skills, make

connections, get to know others, learn about them?

2.  Creating more firehouse time for yourself -  What small efforts can you do to establish more time to be in the fire house?

-  What activities are already in place that you can build upon?

3.  Coaching your executives/organizational leaders to create more FH time for the people who work for them
