THE PROBLEM

Heathrow airport is one of the busiest international airports in the world with 75m passengers in 2016. As one of the top 2 gateways to Europe for Chinese tourists, it has to cope with a significant bottleneck with sales (i.e. VAT) tax refund requests requiring processing at point of departure. VAT refund is a complex, time consuming offline process, requiring detailed form filling and corroboration with extensive and specific records and documented evidence of purchases, via a series of participating services providers.

HOW ACTTAO SOLVED IT

Heathrow VAT refund platform is a mobile companion app and browser-accessible website that is integrated with WeChat. Its designed for Chinese tourists visiting the UK to manage their sales tax refund process and offer them a range of travel information, promotional and retail services. The platform leverages the WeChat Official Account (OA) structure with an integrated HTML5 microsite to provide a customer services channel.

Built for HAL (Heathrow Airport Ltd) by ACTTAO after the original contractor, IBM, was removed. The platform incorporates interactive functions, advice and information on the most efficient methods for applying for the maximum refund available to each tourist.

In addition, there are a range of features being released on the product roadmap that will provide traveller services, incentives and special offers, tourist information on London and shopping incentives in Heathrow’s tax-free retail facilities.

However, huge national growth in the car sector has placed pressure on the existing supply and distribution infrastructure of auto parts and services in recent years. Intensifying consumer demand, expanded supply of car brands and accelerated release of new car models has required the auto parts sector to rethink its business. WDR (Weidong) is a top 100 real estate company in China with a mission to transition to become a global leader in online education. WDR secured a project from the All-China Federation of Trade Unions. The project was to build an online education platform for trade worker vocational training content and services for the federation’s audience of 280 million union members.

ACTTAO has a strategic partnership with WDR and provides technology consultancy and development services to the firm.

HOW ACTTAO HELPED

The ACTTAO-WDR online vocational training platform provides unions, worker associations and public employee management agencies with an online marketplace for digital educational and training content sourcing, marketing and distribution.

The functionality includes live interactive streaming software for tutoring, a video content portal for personalised study programmes, and mixed media courseware user management features.

The platform which is integrated into WeChat and supported on both mobile devices and desktop, had total page views of 206,000 and 20,000 registered users within one week of going live.

BACKGROUND AND BRIEF

SlamBall is a form of basketball played with four trampolines in front of each net and boards around the court edge. It was conceived as high intensity entertainment-focused sport that leverages both the inner city basketball and video/console gaming cultures.

SlamBall was introduced to China where it held its first major international tournament in 2012.

HOW ACTTAO HELPEDACTTAO provided SlamBall with a full technology solutions including the official sports association and league team web portal, an O2O platform with social network features for fans, in advance of the sport’s planned IPO in the Shanghai Stock Exchange. ACTTAO is part of a consortium in the UK building a SaaS platform to provide international white label brands with a B2B2C digital channel for online engagement, purchasing and distribution through Chinese trade buyers in the Food & Drinks market.
