The SC series has been designed for use mainly as a vertical axis unit, taking advantage of the fact that the drive is fitted directly inside of the carriage (eliminating movement of the cables) and with the extruded body as the only mobile part.
SC Series
Series Overview

All the drawings in this catalog are available in CAD files on www.actuatorline.com
Extruded Bodies
The aluminium extrusions used for the SC series are designed and manufactured in cooperation with a leading company in this field to obtain the right combination of high mechanical strength and reduced weight. Aluminium alloy 6060 is used (see page 19 for further information). The dimensional tolerances comply with UNI 3879 standards.
T-slots are provided for fast, hassle-free mounting of accessories (proximity switch runner, etc.).Power cables, air hoses, and other elongated accessories can be passed through the aluminum extrusion by means of the unit’s cable slot.
Threaded holes are provided at one end of the extrusion for mounting of robot gripper mechanisms and EOA (End-of-Arm) tooling.
Carriage
The carriage is an enveloping structure that houses the entire linear motion system. The carriage consists of a drive pulley and two driven pulleys. The external parts are made of anodized aluminium.
Dimensions vary according to the actuator’s size. One of the three set-ups shown on pages 17 & 18 can be used for fast, simple assembly of the SC series.
For added protection, the carriage is also fitted with specific seals (brushes).
Driving Belt
The SC actuator uses steel reinforced polyurethane drive belts with AT type pitch and parabolic profiles. This type of belt is ideal because of its high load transmission characteristics, compact size and low noise. Used in conjunction with a backlash-free pulley, smooth alternating motion can be achieved. Optimization of the maximum belt width-to-body dimension ratio enables the following performance characteristics to be achieved:
• High speed• Low noise• Low wear• Long life

3 The Linear Motion System
All the drawings in this catalog are available in CAD files on www.actuatorline.com
SC series with ball bearing guides
• Two ball bearing guides with high load capacities are mounted onto two seats on the outer sides of the aluminium body.
• The carriage of the linear unit is assembled on four preloaded ball bearing blocks with engineered polymer retention cages.
• The four-ball row configuration enables the carriage to withstand equal loading evenly in the radial (normal) and lateral (transverse) directions.
• The four blocks have seals on both ends and, when necessary, an additional scraper can be fitted for very dirty or contaminated conditions.
• Lubrication reservoirs (pockets) installed on the front of the ball bearing blocks supply the right amount of lubricant, promoting maintenance-free operation.
The linear motion system described here offers:
• High speed and acceleration• High load capacity• High permissible bending moments• Low friction• Long life• Low noise• Maintenance free
The linear motion system has been designed to meet high load, high speed, and maximum acceleration conditions. The SC series features the following linear motion system:

Main Technical Characteristics

All the drawings in this catalog are available in CAD files on www.actuatorline.com
The sectioned drawings on the previous page showing the main characteristics help guide the process of an initial actuator size selection. For a final selection, refer to the data and dimensions indicated in the pages listed at the end of each table.
* Reasonable operating life and system rigidity can be obtained from the values given. These values do not relate to the theoretical maximum permitted load capacity of the linear motion system.
The load capacity of the SC series depends on thelinear motion system used and may vary according to the loading direction: radial or lateral. The maximum load in an axial direction depends on the type of driving belt used.
The maximum recommended values for theradial load (Fz) and the lateral load (Fy) indicated aboveincorporate a substantial factor of safety to ensure long life cycles.
Experience shows that these values ensure safe static loading and adequate life for most applications. For special conditions (such as high shocks, vibrations, dusty environments, acceleration forces and high bending moments, etc), contact Rollon for further technical advice. Maximum permissible values for speed, acceleration and positioning repeatability can be decreased in the presence of high loads.

The SC series can be fitted as standard with different types of movement transmissions:• Planetary gears• Right angle transmission gears• Versions with simple shaft• Versions with hollow shaft
Versions with planetary gears
Planetary gears are used for highly dynamic robotic, automation, and handling applications requiring high torque or frequent reversing and are capable of high level precision requirements. Standard models are available with backlash from 8’ to 20’ and with a reduction ratio from 3:1 to 1000:1. For assembly of nonstandard planetary gears, contact Rollon.
Versions with right angle transmission gears
Standard models are available with 5:1 to 150:1 transmission ratio.
Versions with simple or hollow shafts
If the linear units are not supplied directly with reduction units and the customer intends to use a different solution, the units can be equipped with simple or hollow shafts of different diameters.
Transmission of torque to the drive pulley
For versions equipped with reduction units or with a simple shaft, the drive pulley is coupled using a tapered spline.
This system ensures long-lasting, high level precision, particularly for the case of high torque values and frequent reversals of motion. Only tab type coupling is available in the hollow shaft version. This system could result in backlash, especially in the case of high torque values.
For further information, contact Rollon.

Fitting of the proximity switch
Four threaded holes for the fitting of the proximity switches are provided on the sides of the carriage. When fitting the switches, be careful not to overtorque the switches in order to avoid damage to the sensor target.

SC SP series
RT-nuts Steel nuts to be used in the T-slots of the body.
Lubrication
SP linear units with ball bearing guides
The SP versions are fitted with maintenance-free ball bearing guides.
The carriages are equipped with polymer retention cages to avoid “steel-steel” contact between adjacent rotating elements and to reduce misalignment of these in the ball circuits. The cage also eliminates friction between the ball bearings, therefore, reducing wear.
Lubrication reservoirs (pockets) installed on the ball bearing blocks release the right amount of lubricant to the areas where the loads are applied to the balls, thus promoting maintenance-free operation.
Contact Rollon for the necessary analysis with high cyclic action and heavy loads.

Standard Protection
Protection of the Ball Bearing GuidesThe blocks of the ball bearing guides are fitted with seals on both ends and, when necessary, an additional scraper can be fitted for very dusty conditions.
Protection Using BrushesThe carriages of the linear units are fitted with brush type seals on both ends to prevent penetration of impurities.
Special Protection
To use these linear units in very critical conditions, they can be fitted with a bellows system in addition to the standard protection. The bellows is fixed to the carriage and the ends of the linear unit by means of Velcro tape for easy assembly and disassembly and any replacements.
The total length (L) of the linear unit will vary:add twice the length of the closed bellows package.

Previously, customers wishing to build multi-axis units have had to design, draw and manufacture all the elements necessary to assemble two or more axes. Rollon now offers the accessory mounting brackets and hardware necessary to configure the multi-axis units. The SC series is also pre-engineered to facilitate direct connection with the units of the ROBOT series. In addition to standard elements, Rollon also provides plates for special applications.
