    Liquid Products forManufacturing Efficiencies

ACUSOL rheology modifiers offer anumber of features and benefits thatrecommend their use in household andinstitutional applications. The benefitssupplied by the physical and chemicalnature of the ACUSOL polymersimpart performance enhancement andstorage stability to formulated products,

while maintaining the product safety thatthe formulator demands. ACUSOL

rheology modifiers can be used to

control flow properties, stabilizeformulations, suspend particles, provide

vertical wall cling, and reduce misting. They provide these benefits over a widerange of pH, solvents, and formulationcompositions. The ACUSOL rheologymodifiers also allow for a wide breadthof possible formulations and producttypes, such as gels, emulsions and clearsolutions. Applications include liquidlaundry detergents, fabric softeners, surface cleaners, hand and machinedishwashing detergents, alcohol-basedcleaners, acid cleaners, and solvent-basedcleaners. ACUSOL rheology modifiersare safe and easy-to-handle liquids,

which can reduce processing time, cost, and difficulty.

All ACUSOL rheology modifiersare supplied as liquids and thereforecan be directly incorporated into aformulation without any preparations(warming, de-clumping, dissolving, etc.) and without the concerns often

associated with powders (dustiness, hygroscopic nature, expensiveprocessing, etc.). As a result, significant manufacturing efficienciescan be achieved.

    ACUSOL RheologyModifier Chemistries 3

The ACUSOL product line consistsof three different chemistries

Alkali Soluble Emulsion (ASE),Hydrophobically-modified AlkaliSoluble Emulsion (HASE) andHydrophobically-modified Ethoxylated

URethane (HEUR). The availabilityof these different polymer typesprovides the formulator with thechoices needed to develop productsfor most household, fabric andinstitutional care categories.

    ASE polymers:

ASE polymers are synthesized from acid and acrylate co-monomers and aremade through emulsion polymerization.

    HASE polymers :

HASE polymers are synthesized from an acid/acrylate copolymer backbone andinclude an ethoxylated hydrophobe. These products are also made throughemulsion polymerization.

    HEUR polymers:

HEUR polymers are synthesized from an alcohol, a diisocyanate anda polyethylene glycol.

    Thickening Mechanisms4

ACUSOL HASE rheologymodifiers are able tothicken by twomechanisms that can actsimultaneously and aresynergistic, i.e. by theeffect ofcharge-inducedpolyelectrolytic chainexpansion and throughassociation of the

    extended hydrophobegroups.

When the acid groupspresent in the ACUSOL

HASE molecules areneutralized with inorganicbases or organic amines, they become anionicallycharged and water-soluble.

ACUSOL HASE rheologymodifiers dissolve andswell due to charge-chargerepulsion and therefore

    thicken instantly.

When ACUSOL HASEpolymers swell, thependant hydrophobicgroups are free to buildassociations with oneanother and with otherhydrophobes available inthe formulation, such assurfactants, particulates, emulsion droplets anddyes. This phenomenon

creates a networkstructure that results in asignificant viscosity build.(see 1st illustration at left)

These associativestructures can alsostabilize and dispersethe particulates in aformulation.(see 2ndillustration at left)

ASE polymers ACUSOL ASE polymers thicken viaa non-associative mechanism. Non-associative rheology modifiers do notinteract with surfactant structures, particulates or insoluble emulsiondroplets.(see illustration below)

Non-associative polymers thicken bystructuring the continuous phaseand through chain entanglement. This can stabilize pre-dispersedinsolubles by significantly slowingtheir motion.(see illustration below)

    HASE polymers

HEUR Polymer ACUSOL HEUR rheology modifiersalso thicken via an associativemechanism. The hydrophobic parts ofHEUR polymers build up associations

with other hydrophobes present inthe formulation. However, becausethe polymers are nonionic in nature,no neutralization is needed.

    ACUSOL

ASE and HA SE rheologymodifiers are compatible with surfactants, solvents, oils and salts commonly found inhousehold, fabric and institutional careproducts. These products undergoinstantaneous thickening whenneutralized with base.

ASE and HASE polymers are suppliedas low viscosity emulsions and can beincorporated directly into formulations

with none of the concerns aboutdissolution, particulate clumpingor dusting problems that can beencountered with dry products.

ACUSOL ASE and HASE polymersare also cold processable.

    9

ACUSOL HASE and ASE rheologymodifiers undergo instantaneousthickening when a base is added. Anin-line mixing technique using a staticmixer along with a simple pump affordsa convenient, rapid means of producingthickened solutions and gels. Thesolutions prepared by this techniqueare free from air bubbles. Uponneutralization, ACUSOL ASE andHASE emulsions become clear, highly

    viscous dispersions.

For example, pumping solutions ofACUSOL 820 (diluted to 4% polymersolids) and sodium hydroxide (0.74%)at equal rates through a static mixer gave115 kg/hr of a clear foam-free gel(Brookfield viscosity 2 x 106 mPa s at0.5 rpm) containing 2% ACUSOL 820solids. A small laboratory pump run atmaximum speed gave the same outputrate as in pumping deionized water.

Although this example used only two feedstreams, more feeds could be combined, depending on the type of formulation

and the compatibility of the ingredients.

The preferred order of additionwhen using ACUSOL ASE and HASErheology modifiers in aqueousformulations is as follows:

1.Add ACUSOL rheologymodifiers to the water

2.Add other ingredients from themost acidic to the most alkaline(Note: stongly acidic components should beat least partly neutralized before adding toemulsions of Acusol rheology modifiers)

    3.Add the neutralizing agent

If this sequence is not desirable,ACUSOL ASE and HASE polymerscan be added directly to an alkalineformulation after first diluting the

ACUSOL product with two partsof water. Addition of the waterprevents gel particles (small particles

with neutralized swollen surfaces andunneutralized cores that willtake considerable time tocompletely dissolve).

    Storage and Handling

ASE and HASE PolymersKeep from freezing; materialmay coagulate. The minimumrecommended storage temperature

for these materials is 1C/34F. Themaximum recommended storagetemperature is 49C/120F. Thesematerials may coagulate if exposedto temperatures outside this range. The coagulation process is irreversible.

HEUR PolymersACUSOL HEUR products are suppliedas 15-35% solids with maximum

viscosities of 11,000 mPa.s at roomtemperature (25C). They are suppliedas clear to slightly opaque liquids thatthicken to a clear liquid.

These materials can be extremely viscousand may coagulate at high temperatures. If stored at high temperatures, they mayhave to be stirred before use.

The recommended storage temperatureis 4C to 49C. Keep from freezing.Product once frozen will not performappropriately.

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs)are available for all Rohm and Haasproducts. These sheets containpertinent information that you may

rheology modifiers, please contact us atwww.rohmhaas.com.

ACUSOL HEUR rheology modifiers arecompatible with cationic surfactants, acids and peroxides as well as otheringredients commonly found inhousehold, fabric and institutional careproducts.

HEUR polymers are shipped as lowviscosity water-based liquids whichthicken on addition to a formulation dueto interactions with a surfactant ordispersed phase. ACUSOL HEURrheology modifiers should be addedslowly and steadily near the peripheryof the mixing tank. The rate of additionshould be adjusted to allow uniformincorporation of the thickener. Rapidaddition may cause excessive thickeningor flocculation due to highly localizedthickener concentrations.

To ensure optimum performance ofACUSOL HEUR rheology modifiers, thefollowing procedure is recommended:

1.Introduce most of the formulationwater into the reactor

    2.Add ACUSOL HEUR polymer and

stir vigorously for a minimum of5 minutes (see note)

3.Add the most hydrophilic (high HLB)surfactants and ingredients and stirfor a minimum of 5 minutes

4.Add the remaining components, saving the most hydrophobiccomponent for last

Note: If the formulation does not contain asurfactant that helps dispersion, Step 2 shouldbe extended to a minimum of 40 minutes.Either low speed paddle stirrers or high spinturbines are suitable.
