MessagesFROM THE PRESIDENT

LOOKING BACKTHIS IS THE LAST VOICE COLUMN I will write as Pres-ident of Adat Shalom. It has been an honor anda true privilege to serve as President of the syn-agogue for the last two years. I’ve enjoyed thefriendship and support I’ve received from ourwonderful clergy, and I’ve benefitted greatly fromthe experience, judgment and professionalism ofAlan Yost. I’d also like to acknowledge JudyMarx and the hard work she puts into creating The Voice and di-recting other communication projects.

I’m proud of the work we’ve accomplished in the last few

years. The executive committee is comprised of wonderfully com-mitted people who care deeply about the success of Adat Shalomand are committed to its continuing growth and vitality. Theboard of trustees is energetic and engaged, and our attendanceat board meetings far surpassed my

FROM RABBI BERGMANIN THE TIME OF THE OMER

WE ARE NOW IN THE TIME between Pesach, theholiday of our exodus from Egypt andShavuot, the holiday of the giving of theTorah. These two holidays together representour physical and spiritual liberation. One isnot more important than the other. We havebodies, minds and spirits, and they all livetogether in the same place and need to be nurtured. This period of time is known as the Counting of the Omer.It is mostly about learning how to live a happy and balancedlife. As you know, this is not easy and requires constant ad-justing. The Kabbalists, the Jewish mystics, created an interestingsystem for thinking about this period. They noticed that theTorah divides this period into seven weeks, as opposed to fortynine days. They said that each week represented a different Se-firah, a different aspect of God.These are the Sefirot of the seven weeks: 1) Chesed - Compassion, acceptance without judgment 2) Gevurah - Strength and Judgment 3) Tiferet - Beauty, a combination of Chesed and Gevurah 4) Netzach - Victory, changing what needs to be changed 5) Hod - Splendor, leaving alone what needs to be left alone 6) Yesod - Foundation, knowing what needs to be changed and what does not 7) Malchut - Sovereignty, where heaven and earth meet, balances all the other qualities and creates a peaceful world. In Kabbalistic writing, these seven Sefirot are representedas two inverted triangles balancing on each other and thenboth on the last one. Balance is the key, not too far to the rightor left or the whole thing could fall over and collapse. Many of these terms are found in Lecha Dodi, which wesing on Friday nights. It, too, was written by Kabbalists in Sfat. The first time I heard Lecha Dodi was as a very stressed soph-omore at the Hillel House in Ann Arbor. Hearing it was when Iwould start to relax, to feel that I had made it to the end of theweek, and that at least for a little while that my life was rebal-anced. If you think about it, a week is like the seven Sefirot. It istwo sets of three days, balancing on top of one day, Shabbat. Judaism in general is about finding your middle, your bal-ance and equilibrium. Blessings on food are a chance to pausea moment and remind yourself to enjoy what you are eating.Prayer is spending a few moments quietly reminding yourselfeach day that you are a person and not a drone. Lifelong Torahstudy allows you the opportunity to learn interesting andmeaningful ideas and challenge yourself at the same time. Maybe the most effective tool in finding your balance isasking questions. That is one of the highlights of Passover. Itis how the Talmud begins. The most important question is “Why am I doing or sayingwhat I am doing or saying?” Is it out of habit and anger, or outof genuine belief that it is the most helpful thing you could bedoing? Look at what the other person needs, and adjust yourself,if you really want to help. If you cannot, you may just need tonot get involved in the situation. This will not give immediate

RABBIBERGMAN

PERHAPS THE ONLY PERSON who fields morequestions than a pregnant woman is a par-

ent during a long road trip. People are natu-rally curious, but caring as well. So whatshould one say to an expectant mother to ex-press good wishes? When Lauren was preg-nant, many people would wish us “Mazel tov!”and then follow that remark with “I know that’snot what you’re supposed to say, but I’m notsure what else to say.” Is it wrong to say “Mazel tov” at a time like

this? I say absolutely not, but there are thosewho would disagree with me. Why? Because in addition to beingcurious, Jews are superstitious. Many Jews invoke the phrasekenne hora, a colloquial pronunciation of the three Yiddishwords: kein ayin horah – “no evil eye.” Intended to ward off evil, this concept has its roots in the

FROM RABBI YOSKOWITZHAPPY ISRAEL INDEPENDENCE DAY!

THE HEBREW POET CHAIM NACHMAN BIALIK stated:“Without the land of Israel there is neither

hope nor promise for a Jewish future in anyplace at this time.” The task of keeping Israelsecure has fallen mainly on the citizens of Is-rael and upon us, their co-religionist in themost influential Jewish community in the Di-aspora. It is my responsibility and yours.

It is to Israel, the greatest miracle in all of

Jewish history, that Rachel and I returned fora March 2014 visit. This visit was not part of aRabbinic Conference or Mission, nor of guidinga congregational group. It was to return to a home where we arethe majority in a minority equation. For me, visiting family andfeeling the gift of being in the Jewish national home were thehighlights. While there, I led services at the ConservativeYeshiva’s Thursday morning minyan and davened on Shabbat atBeit Agron, a Con-

at board meetings far surpassed my expectations.Reshaping our governance and the composition of theBoard as well as the structure of the Board meetings, which I believe created an environment in which ourlay leadership was truly engaged and felt as thoughtheir contributions mattered, is the single achieve-ment of which I am most proud. I also tried to bring a new level of transparencyto the business of the synagogue. Our financial situ-ation, membership statistics, school enrollment andoperating challenges should be shared with the con-gregation, and I have tried to do that. We made sig-nificant strides in achieving a balanced budget, in nosmall part by closing the Early Childhood Center, andwe renewed the contracts of Rabbis Bergman andShere and Hazzan Gross, thereby assuring continuityin our clergy for at least the next several years.Melissa Ser and the Curriculum Committee has madesignificant progress in improving the quality and cur-riculum of our religious school. We have also achievedstability in our catering operations, which will con-tinue to benefit the Synagogue in the future. There is, of course, still work that needs to bedone. I regret that we were not able to raise muchneeded additional funds for our endowment and ourbuilding requires a significant amount of capital im-provements. While our membership has stabilized, wehave not gained as many new members as I hadhoped. I’m optimistic that we’ll achieve these goals inthe coming years. As my term comes to an end at the end of thismonth, I want to extend my gratitude and thanks tothe congregation for its continued support. I amthrilled that Lori Issner will be our next president. She’s experienced, skillful and passionate about AdatShalom, and she’ll do an outstanding job. Please joinme in welcoming Lori in her new role and wishing hermuch success.

roots in the Talmud, Pirkei Avot and Kabbalistic writings. People havestrong feelings when it comes to trying not to “jinx” things. So does say-ing “Mazel tov” upon hearing that news that someone is pregnant temptthe evil eye? No, because what’s important here is one’s good intentions,or their kavanah. Kavanah is often associated with ones’ feelings whenpraying, but it can apply to other situations as well.

There is another expression, however, that one can say that is spe-

cific to the time of pregnancy: b’sha’ah tovah, which means “at a goodhour.” It is a wish for the pregnancy to be free of complications and forbirth to take place when both mother and baby are fully ready andhealthy. The next time you see a pregnant woman, feel free to wish hera "b’sha’ah tovah.” But if you can’t remember this expression, however, and another well-intended remark comes out of your mouth, there isnothing wrong with that. “Mazel tov” will be accepted in the spirit inwhich it was intended, with good wishes and no evil eye.

Lauren and I want to thank you all for being so supportive through-

out all three of our Michigan pregnancies!

had a significant number of teachers participate inthese courses, becoming stronger educators and grow-ing their repertoire of knowledge. Their classes reapedthe rewards almost immediately.

YOUTH SCOOP FROM JODIJodi Gross, Associate Director, Education & Youth

WRITING ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST What started as an idea a few years ago has turned into a wonderful tra-dition. After learning about the Holocaust and visiting the Holocaust MemorialCenter, the 7th grade students participated in a Yom HaShoah essay contestco-sponsored by the Men’s Club. Our students take this contest very seriously and so do the Men’s Clubmembers and Clergy who volunteer to be judges. Writing an essay about theHolocaust is no easy task. I am very proud of all of the students who partic-ipated: Matthew Brown, Evie Dickman, Danielle Goldberg, Maddie Katz,Jonah Lusky, Abby Singer-Miller, Jared Perlman, Ethan Podolsky, Ali Randel,Jack Randel and Sydni Rotenberg. Here are two excerpts: “Those brave souls who resisted Hitler and the Nazis were heroes. Notall heroes have to do something huge, but those people were heroes to all ofthe Jews, and others that suffered. Their act of resistance toward Hitler wasvery brave.” - Jonah Lusky Next time you see unfair treatment, bullying, or any other inconvenience,it is important that you use resistance peacefully to make things better. Re-member the Holocaust, and how millions of people of all kinds died, just be-cause of one person, even though many could have resisted him. As my guidesaid at the Holocaust museum, “The Holocaust did not need to happen.”- Maddie Katz Once again, our 7th graders had a special treat meeting survivor ManiaSalinger in April. Mania shared her story of survival, and the students eachreceived a copy of her memoir. The winner of the essay contest will be announced in the June/JulyVoice.

JEWS & MONEY WITH RABBI BERGMAN will discuss Jews& Money: From the walled cities of the Bible to pres-ent day Wall Street Jews have been deeply involved inthe economies of every country they have lived in.They brought innovation and financial developmentto their communities, but often incurred scorn andblame when a country's situation changed for theworse. We will look at the Jewish approach to moneyand commerce over the centuries, and wrestle withquestions such as, "Does Judaism advocate Capital-ism, Communism, or Socialism, or maybe none ofthese systems?" and "What does Judaism say aboutwealth and its distribution?"

ADAT SHALOM MEMORIAL PARK

Conservative synagogue, located next to the Conservative Yeshiva. Israelis and Jewish Americans find many warts on each other.Far transcending their respective liabilities are the virtues and as-sets that both possess. To understand what these warts, virtuesand assets are, I have read two books on Israel which are recipi-ents of high praise in newspapers and in journals. For me theyare the best two books written about modern Israel.

The first was written by a former Jewish American, a bar

mitzvah from the Linden Heights Jewish Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.,where I, too, became a bar mitzvah. Yossi Klein Halevi’s “LikeDreamers: The Story of The Israeli Paratroopers Who ReunitedJerusalem and Divided a Nation” is a longitudinal narrative ofseven paratroopers who helped to reunite Jerusalem in 1967.These soldiers went on to reshape Israeli society in very differentways. As an American immigrant with a modern Orthodox up-bringing, Klein HaLevi knows how to tell a story to a Jewish Amer-ican audience.

The second book which I read after returning from Israel is

Ari Shavit’s “My Promised Land.” In 1897, Shavit’s great–grand-father Herbert Bentwich, an affluent London lawyer and Zionistleader, led 21 British Jews to the Holy Land. Shavit traces Israel’shistory partly through the lives of his pioneering forbearer.Throughout the book, Shavit grapples with the vexing complexi-ties of Israel’s history, right up to the year 2013, when his book, the first that he wrote in the English language, was published.Shavit, like Klein HaLevi, can’t help but marvel at the miracle ofthe “Jewish national project.”

My visit to Israel was inspiring. It was a country filled with a

zest for life and for purpose. As one cab driver put it, “We live in aGarden of Eden . . . well almost. It would be one if our neighborswould not keep trying to destroy us.”

“Ein Ba’al Hanes Makir Et Niso” – “One living a miracle does

not recognize his miracle.”

I hope that you will pause for a moment on Israel Independ-

ence Day to thank God that we are living in a miraculous timewhen we can glory in the vitality and in the accomplishments ofthe Jewish State of Israel.

Happy Israel Independence Day.

FROM RABBI BERGMAN (continued from page 3) This will not give immediate results. It is a process. It does work, and you willstart feeling better and happier. This may be a new feeling for you. The people aroundyou may start seeming a little happier, too. This may not seem like such an important idea when you look at the state of theworld and all our challenges and tragedies, but you could imagine how much less ha-tred and anger there would be if people could find that emotional balance. We can start with ourselves and our own lives, and maybe that will start to makea difference that begins to heal the world.
