Guwahati -- Fredolin Phangcho, a young man of 20 years old from Karbi Anglong is one among many who is determined to work hard for his livelihood. He belongs to a family with eight members: mother, father, 4-brothers and 2- sisters. As a young man he wanted to defeat adverse circumstances but he could not.

He tried new ways in achieving something, but kept on failing over and over again.

The story of his life goes back to the time when he failed his Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination in 2011.

“From morning till evening I used to roam around with my friends doing nothing worthwhile,” Phangcho recalls. “Sometimes I used to think loud, or talk to myself saying, ‘will my life be the same as it was, or do I need to change my life?’” Phangcho recalls. After one year, he received a good news from his friend about landing a job as a security Guard at ADBU.

The students of Masters in Psychol-ogy (Psychological Counselling), ADBU, observed World Suicide Pre-vention Day in the University through a special morning assembly for the entire university and later by an en-grossing street play.

The play titled “Who Commits Sui-cide?” was performed for the students of the Engineering department, and a second performance for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Included in the audience were the Vice-Chancellor of the University Dr. Stephen Mavely SDB, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar, the Director of The School of Humanities and Social Sciences and many members of the faculty.

The primary aim of the performance was to bring awareness about the reality of suicide.

Through the play various issues and facts relating to the large-scale preva-lence of suicide in India, especially among teen and young adults, were highlighted.

Many were surprised when informed by the actors that approximately 17 persons commit suicide every hour in our country.

It was even more shocking that the latest figures put the annual reported cases of death by suicide in India to be two and a half lakhs.

World Health Organization has termed India as the ‘Suicide Capital’ of the world!

The play depicted four possible sce-narios, from among many, that could lead to suicide, namely:

(i) Excessive parental pressure for academic performance

(ii) Failed romantic relationships

(iii) Ragging or peer rejection

(iv) Suicide by farmers

It also depicted the positive effect of psychological counseling on people who are depressed and could be in

the danger zone. Many of us react to news of suicide with a shrug that conveys ‘this kind of stuff happens to others not to me’.

While an investigation into the exact stress or pressure factors that trigger

a person to end her or his life may be a relevant study, it is of greater impor-tance to be aware that there could be someone in our homes, our class, our office or our immediate environment that is on the brink of utter hopeless-ness. Someone near us could be looking around desperately for one caring glance, one understanding smile, one

accepting voice or one generous shoulder.

Could it be that while running in the desperate race called ‘success-at-any -cost’ we are being unmindful of the

silent cry of these fellow humans whose only wish is to find meaning in their lives?

The message that clearly reached the audience was, “our indifference does translate into the loss of another life. But our awareness and kindly atti-tude, while costing us nothing, will make the difference between life and death for someone, somewhere.”

Social Media for Social Work: MSW students get trained in citizen journalism

The ADBU Students of Social Work (3rd sem) had a 5-day “Social Media for Social Work” workshop, 15-19 September. “It is a matter of pride that our students got the op-portunity to be trained in social media skills as no other top social sciences institutions in the country has mandatory social media skill training in their curriculum,” says Dr. Riju Sharma Head of Social Work Department. A group of 50 students worked in 12 teams on social issues like clogged sewage, open drains, educa-tional stress, social networking addiction on campus, street children, homelessness, and child labour. The course facilitated by Mass Communication de-partment was hands on training to create content for various social media platforms like Blog, YouTube, and Radio.

“We are following the principles of Backpack Journalism but ap-plying it to grassroots level social activists who have no access to professional equipment. The trainer's challenge/opportunity is to tap student's social media application skills exhibited in the use of smart phones for shooting and recording, and laptops for edit-ing,” says Fr. C.M. Paul, Head of Mass Communication Department. Revealing the workshop mood, Fr. Paul adds “We stretched the students and their laptop computers to the extreme limits… luck-ily Video Pad software did not crash, though team sprit sagged with the stress caused by deadlines, the students kept going spurred on by the competition between 12 teams.” The Registrar Dr. Basil Koikara spent two hours training the group in audio editing with Audacity software and Videopad for video editing. Faculty members Mrs. Machun Kamei and Mr Kaushik Bhuyan followed up the radio and video productions. “We enjoyed working in groups and it was great joy to see our articles and photographs created during the workshop on the MSW department blog www.adbusw.wordpress.com,” says Tomy Joseph.

John Poji from Nagaland says, “the process of creat-ing the four minute radio program for Podcast and four minute YouTube film on our campaign topic was more exciting.” The workshop concluded with group presentations, and conferring of certifi-cates, 19 September.
