14 October
2016
Water Street School will be celebrating the 950th Anniversary of
the Battle of Hastings on Friday 14 October 2016.
The day will be filled with workshops and activities related to the
Battle of Hastings.
A letter will be sent home shortly explaining further details about
the day! We are hoping children (and staff too!) will come in
costume. The letter will explain this… (it will be a simple costume—
honest!!)
The whole day should be great fun ! There will be lots of photos
too!
30 September 2016
Wow! What a busy start to the term… As you read the following
pages and class news—you will see just how much we have
packed in already this term.
We are very proud to welcome our new starters this term, who
have settled extremely well into our Reception Class. You can see
their photographs with their Year 6 buddies on the next page.
We also like to welcome Evan, a new pupil in Year 3 and also Miss
Ruth Harker, our new Year 3 teacher.
I hope you enjoy seeing all of the many photographs of class
lessons and activities. If you wish other family members to be
added to our newsletter—please let us know their email address:
Many thanks for your continued support.
Mr S Anslow
Reception: I am really impressed with the way that all the
children have settled into Reception. Well done
everyone! Our half days eased us in gently and
we are now enjoying being together, all 30 of us!
Our first theme was all about ourselves and we
went paper doll crazy (if you haven’t seen the
display on the back wall in our classroom please call in and have a look!) We are
now moving on, thinking about harvest as our provision revolves around the story,
The Enormous turnip. We have been learning a ‘days of the week’ song and get-
ting used to the new routines in school. We had great fun meeting our buddies and
we look forward to many more fun activities with them in the weeks and months to
come. See the photos of us when we met our buddies for the first time!
What an amazing job you have all done with your scrapbooks! It has been fun look-
ing through them and talking about the holidays! Thank you to parents for all your
effort with these. Thank you also for bringing in favourite books from home and we
have been really enjoying listening to all the stories and finding out new information
too. Mrs Roberts
Year 1: What a great start to Year 1 the children have had! It is always a difficult transi-
tion from reception to year 1 with much more restriction on play and the children
are really doing well; we are really proud of them all.
We have managed to fit in so much already as you know from our newsletters.
We have been busy doing PE every week with Mr Mukherjee too and this week
we worked with Year 5 as they learned how to set up the playground squad.
This was just brilliant and all the children worked very well together, listening to
each other and playing loads of different games which meant, of course, lots of
fun! We have the trip to Thornton Hall Farm Park to look forward to next week
too.
Here are some photos of us in and around our classroom ‘exploring’ the areas and also of some of us with
Year 5.
Mrs Munslow & Mrs Barrett
Year 2: We have had a great start to the year and Y2 have settled in brilliantly and
have coped very well with the new routines. They have quickly taken on the
challenge of working more independently not to mention becoming responsi-
ble for changing books and handing in letters!
In English, we have been loving learning about Katie Morag and carried out
some excellent role plays taking on the different characters of Katie, the two
Grannies and Neilly Beag. We have also had great fun reading the stories out
loud and practising our Scottish accents! ‘ Och her and fancy ways!’ We also
had a go at conscience alley and deciding what each character would do.
In art we have been making a display of the Isle of Struay and have produced
a great map of the island complete with the sea, hills and houses. We will be
adding more things week by week.
In maths we have been getting to grips with place value and working with larg-
er numbers. We have been using a variety of ways to represent numbers includ-
ing base 10 rods and cubes, bar models and using bead strings.
In Science as part of our work in the human lifecycle, we had a lovely visit from
Chole’s mum and Baby Alex who was only 14 weeks
old. We learnt lots about what he can do and how
many more things Year 2 can do now they are old-
er. Alex was a model baby and amazingly
slept through the whole thing!
Mrs Rimmington
Year 3:
We have been very busy in Year Three this month. We have
really enjoyed looking at stories by Michael Foreman in Litera-
cy, particularly ‘I’ll take you to Mrs Cole’ and had some fab
versions of this story written by our class.
We spent a whole afternoon, covering the hall in straw and
hay whilst in the process of creating our ‘Stone Age to Iron
Age’ display, which was great fun (although it took a lot of
clearing up!) and will look great on our display board once we
have got it finished.
We have had the opportunity to participate in two sporting events out of school this month. We had 18 of
our class members compete in the Cross Country competition at Aireville park, two of whom managed to
get placed within the top 6 runners in their race and so will go on to compete at Giggleswick in the near fu-
ture- good luck to those boys. We have also taken part in an inter-schools orienteering activity where every-
one took part and had a great afternoon finding clues and reading maps.
Miss Harker
Year 4:
Well it has been a busy start to Year 4. The children are settling in nicely and get-
ting to grips with the new routines and expectations of Year 4.
In English the children have been reading a story called ‘Sam’s Duck’ which is a
story with a dilemma. The children have been involved in drama to get to know
the character of Sam and the dilemma he faces. We
have also had two very special visitors in the class (Mrs
Smith’s ducks) for the children to write about and de-
scribe. This week we have written a descriptive piece of
writing using paragraphs, adjectives, similes and con-
junctions. In our spelling work we have been focussing
on suffixes such as -ing, -ed and –s, -al and –ary. Gram-
mar has involved using a range of conjunctions to extend our sentences.
In Maths the children have been learning about place value of 4 digit numbers. They have been learning the
value of each digit and how to compare them using < and >. We also took those 4 digit numbers and
learned how to round them to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000, knowing which digits changed and which
stayed the same. The children really enjoyed learning about Roman Numerals up to 100. We have just started
looking at addition using a column and the inverse operation.
The topic in Science is Sound and learning about how it is created. We have studied how
our ears work and we are creating an experiment to show which material is best for sound
proofing.
In History the children have been learning about the Anglo-Saxons. This
started by revisiting the Year 3 Roman topic and learning about why the
Romans left Britain and what problems were faced by the people that
were left. We then went on to learn who the Anglo Saxons were and
where they came from, why they left their homeland and what difficulties they may have
faced.
This year we have started learning how to play basketball and a coach has been in to develop the skills of
the children and teach them the rules of the game. The children are all working very hard and we are im-
pressed with their attitude and effort in class. Mrs Bownass & Mrs Smith

Year 5:
Year 5 have made a super start to their year
and have settled into their new classroom fan-
tastically well. We have a 100% success rate on
the return of homework, an impressively tidy
cloakroom (mostly!) and classroom learning be-
haviour to be proud of!
We are very close
to the end of our first Science topic on Forces
and have thoroughly enjoyed a host of practi-
cal, investigative tasks as pictured. Tug of War
games, water filled syringes, giant sheets of
cardboard, washing up liquid covered tables,
tongs, tweezers and nail clippers have been
the order of the day so that we can grasp the
complex physics behind our everyday lives.
Advice to the children at the start of the topic
was to take themselves off to a playground
and experiment with as many forces as possi-
ble on the swings, slides and round-abouts…
it’s not too late yet to spend a happy Saturday
engaged in this complicated learning task!
In addition, Year 5 have designed Christmas
cards, had fantastic success at the Cross
Country event and begun their training to be
Playground Squad leaders. Time will tell which
of us is voted onto the School Council…

Year 6:
So what have Year 6 been up to this Sep-
tember? As usual it has been a jam-
packed month which has included: the
inter-school cross country -which a record
number of Y6 pupils took part in this year;
starting our World War 1 local history topic;
taking on lots of new roles and responsibilities in
Year 6 and of course meeting and getting to know
our reception buddies.
Children have been working hard on their book
flags which reflect different types of genre which
they enjoy reading. We have just started some
great creative writing focussing on a fantasy land
of sweets! In our ICT work
we have learnt how to
create word clouds ‘all
about us’. Year 6 and Mrs Booth have also
been busy in the new cookery room creating
their own biscuits creations which we sold at
our coffee morning.
Can we say a huge thank you to everyone who attend our Macmillian
Coffee Morning. It was a great success. (We will let you know how much
we raised next week). The children made great waiters, waitresses....
and washer uppers!! and made some pretty good cups of tea too.
Many thanks to everyone for their kind contribution of cakes and raffle
prizes. The sales of our homemade biscuits went really well. We certainly
have some members of Year 6 who would could replace Mary Berry in
the Bake Off!
Next month we are looking forward to continuing our WW1 topic, doing
some WW1 inspired art, carrying out heart rate experiments and begin-
ning work on our class novel “Private Peaceful”
Don’t forget our class assembly is Friday 21st October @2.30.

Before School 8.45am:
A gentle reminder… keeping our children safe
Please may I remind parents that there should be no unsupervised children on the school site before
8.45am. If children are here before that time they are parent’s responsibility, any older children who walk
to school independently should not be at school before 8.45am—when a member of staff is then on duty.
Thank you for your help with this important matter.
Mr Anslow
Healthy Packed
Lunches…. As a healthy school we strive to have
healthy packed lunches…
Please may I gently remind parents that
sweets and bars of chocolate should not
be in your child’s packed lunch.
Chocolate biscuits are fine! Well all
things in moderation!!
Thank you for your help.
Mr Anslow
