Broadband Testing and the Adtech AX/4000The 21st century opens with the astonishing growth of telecommunications and theInternet. Each day, more of our physical world moves into the digital domain. Music,literature, technology, and conversation are routinely digitized and distributed worldwidewith telepathic efficiency. None of this would be possible without broadband networks.As one would expect, the current expansion of broadband traffic isexponential, both in the amount of information transported and inthe number of ways to deliver it. Broadband Testing TodayBecause network performance, reliability, and availability havebecome so critical, broadband testing requires much more sophis-tication now than it did several years ago. With its early roots inthe ATM industry, the AX/4000 Broadband Test System has evolved into an essentialtool for testing the performance and quality of service (QoS) of multiple transmissiontechnologies including IP, ATM, Ethernet, and Frame Relay. Designed with feedback fromthe networking companies and switch manufacturers who buy and use it, the AX/4000provides the fastest, most comprehensive, and most flexible broadband testing solutionavailable anywhere.

High-Speed Programmable HardwareAdtech engineers pioneered the design of fully programmable hardware for broadbandtesting. The AX/4000 now embodies some of the most extensive applications of fieldprogrammable gate arrays (FPGAs) ever developed. The system’s unique architectureenables users to program their test modules on site to support the latest developments

Real-TimeBroadband TestTraffic GenerationBecause real-world broadband traffic iscomplex and constantly changing, youcannot depend on simple, repetitivepackets to test networks and switches. Forthis reason, all AX/4000 Generator andGenerator/Analyzer modules include themost sophisticated hardware traffic gener-ators ever built and come with precisiontools for creating unlimited traffic variationsand detail. Setup “wizards” and logicalfunctional blocks allow you to build eventhe most massive and complex trafficstreams quickly and easily.

All AX/4000 generators are specificallytuned for the transmission technologybeing tested. For example, ATM traffic gen-erators include special traffic shapers tocontrol the release of cells based on peakand sustainable cell rates and maximumburst sizes. IP traffic generators includesophisticated modeling to recreate thewide range of packet length distributionsfound in IP traffic.

Multiple Traffic SourcesMultiple traffic sources allow realistic simu-lations of multimedia traffic and multipleclasses of service. Every AX/4000 genera-tor has multiple independent trafficsources and each source can generate itsown user-defined traffic patterns.

Traffic Distribution ModelsBroadband traffic is anything but steady.Packets and cells flow in bursts with peri-odic and seemingly random distributions.To create realistic test traffic, the generatorincludes multiple real-time distributionmodels. These models range from singlemanually triggered packets to complexMarkov Modulated Poisson Process distri-butions. Any one of the distribution modelscan be assigned to any one of the multipletraffic sources. And if these distributionmodels don’t meet your exact needs, youcan modify them to create your owncustom distributions.

Every AX/4000 Generator, Generator/Analyzer, and Generator/Dual Analyzer module includes asophisticated traffic generator with multiple traffic sources, each with its own real-time traffic distri-bution model, sequencing, and prioritization.

User Defined TrafficContent and SequencingIn addition to creating an extremely widerange of packet and cell types, theAX/4000 allows you to program sequencesof packets with looping, jumps, repeatsand conditional branching.

Traffic PrioritizationYou can simulate multiple classes of ser-vice by prioritizing each traffic source. Forexample, you can assign a higher priority toconstant bit rate (CBR) traffic and a lowerpriority to variable bit rate (VBR) trafficsources. After generating the traffic, youcan use an AX/4000 analyzer to checkyour device’s ability to maintain properQoS levels.

Traffic Shaping, Policing,and Error InjectionWith the AX/4000, you can shape andmodify generated traffic to check the polic-ing and error handling capabilities of theequipment under test. Shaping also helpsdetermine the effect errors will have on theoverall throughput and reliability of asystem.

You can police traffic generated by asystem under test to confirm that it isshaping traffic properly. You can also injecterrors randomly or manually and set themto hit any byte or even certain bits withinspecific bytes. With manual error injection,you can send an eight-bit binary error pat-tern that is easy to trace after it leaves thegenerator. Error injection enables you totest your equipment’s error detection anderror handling capabilities.

IP packet lengths can be varied using simple fixed or random distributions. For even more realisticand flexible simulations of IP traffic, the AX/4000 Quad Modal Distribution allows up to four packetlength distributions per traffic source.

Full-Rate TrafficAnalysisThe speed and capacity of AX/4000 Gener-ator/Analyzer and Generator/Dual Analyzermodules allow very large scale analysis ofbroadband streams continuously and atfull rate. The analyzer portions of thesemodules automatically identify and supplycontinuous QoS and performance mea-surements for thousands of substreamssimultaneously. A single AX/4000 mAXmodule can easily provide over 125,000full-rate measurements continuously andin real time—all without missing a singlepacket or cell!

Bi-Directional AnalysisAX/4000 Version II and mAX Genera-tor/Dual Analyzer modules allowbi-directional monitoring and analysis froma single port. For example, this functionprovides the essential capability to monitorand decode both sides of an SVC callsetup conversation and to compare theperformance of traffic moving in twodirections.

Automatic Traffic FiltersDepending on the module used, the ana-lyzer can identify and analyze up to 4,095separate substreams simultaneouslybased on a variety of criteria such aspacket or cell identifier or the type ofpacket or cell received. The analyzer canalso filter substreams based on specificcontent making it easy to monitor speciallytagged substreams and test blocks.

The AX/4000 provides complete statistics for every substream in real time.

The Main Analyzer screen displays information for up to 4,095 different substreams.

Real-time histograms and charts provide a graphical view of traffic including interarrival times,transit delays, IP datagram lengths and any of four different measurements per time flow.

Full-Rate CaptureIn addition to providing live statistics, theanalyzer can also capture traffic at full ratefor further analysis or protocol decoding.Captures can be triggered manually orautomatically based on specific events orerrors and can include packets or cellsreceived before, after, or both before andafter the trigger event.

Because data capture is at full rate,the analyzer captures every single byte ofevery packet or cell received during thecapture period. The standard 16 MB cap-ture capacity can be expanded up to 128MB by adding additional capture memory.

Full-Rate QoSMeasurementsThe AX/4000 can maintain over 125,000simultaneous QoS measurements per portat full rate and in real time. All statisticscan be saved on disk for further analysisand for printing detailed test reports.

Histograms and ChartsThe analyzer’s histograms and charts pro-vide a graphical view of the analyzerstatistics in real time. These includeinterarrival time, transit delay and packetlengths. Up to 32 histograms and 16charts can be viewed simultaneously.

Protocol DecodersOptional ATM, Frame Relay and IP protocoldecoders provide detailed protocol analysisof captured data.

The AX/4000 IP protocol decoderpackage includes over 20 protocol decod-ers derived from a powerful new AX/4000protocol-decoding engine. These decodersinclude all major Internet protocols in usetoday.

The AX/4000 automatically filtersand analyzes data, video, and voicetraffic at full rate and in real time.

These include bothstandard and custom applications. In addition to aflexible user interface, the AX/4000 also supportsremote multi-user access—a powerful option fortesting large, distributed networks.

Windows and UNIX Controller SoftwareOur highly acclaimed controller software, available in bothWindows and UNIX versions, has a very intuitive graphicaluser interface with many powerful features for getting the

most from your AX/4000 compo-nents. Test setup is logical and quickand when tests are running, the softwaredisplays real-time data and statistics thatare thorough and easy to understand.

Custom Programming ToolsWith the AX/4000 C Function Library, you can create your owncustom and automated AX/4000 applications that can run on anyANSI C compatible platform. Included in this library are the samecontrol features provided in our Windows and UNIX controllersoftware.

The AX/4000 Tcl (tool command language) package makes iteven easier to create your own AX/4000 applications. This popu-lar scripting language does not require extensive programmingexperience and typically uses less code (in some cases 90percent less) than standard C language applications.

The Virtual Broadband Test SystemAnother ingenious feature of the AX/4000 controller software is its ability tofunction as a virtual broadband test system. To build a virtual test system,simply select the test modules you need from any of the AX/4000 systemson your network. Once selected the modules will operate together as if theywere located inside a single chassis. In addition to individual users access-ing multiple AX/4000 systems, multiple users can access modules insideone or more systems on the network.

Multi-User, Multi-SystemRemote AccessWith an Ethernet control module installed in the AX/4000 chassis,the system can be connected to an Ethernet-based LAN for

access by remoteusers. Becauseevery test module inthe chassis has itsown address on thenetwork, users canaccess the modulesthey need and leavethe remainder forothers to use. Thisenables multipleusers to access thesame chassissimultaneously.

One-Way Transfer Delay MeasurementsOne-way transfer delays between two sites cannot be measuredunless both locations are synchronized with identical timestamps.A global positioning system (GPS) option allows two AX/4000 sys-tems located anywhere in the world to share a common GPStimestamp for accurate one-way transfer delay measurementsfrom one end of a network to the other.

RemoteDistributedTestingFor large networks,multiple AX/4000 sys-tems can be installed atmajor switching sites andcontrolled remotely from acentralized network opera-tions center. This network ofAX/4000’s can provide valu-able local testing and monitoring as well as enablenetwork-wide tests between multiple network nodes. Because itcan be controlled from a central location, remote distributedtesting is also faster and more cost effective than dispatchingfield service technicians to local sites.

Multiple users in different cities can access mod-ules located inside the same AX/4000 system.The software also indicates whichmodules are in use and evenwho is using them.

Mainframe and PortableChassisThe AX/4000 is available with a 16-slotmainframe or a four-slot portable chassis.Both are functionally identical except for thenumber of available slots. All AX/4000 com-ponents will operate in either chassis.

Control ModulesControl modules provide the interfacebetween the chassis and an external control-ler such as a PC or a workstation. Controlmodules are available with a high-speedIEEE-488 GPIB connector for direct cable con-nection to a controller or with a 10BaseTEthernet connector for a network connection.Networking the AX/4000 enables multipleremote users to access the system.

In addition to providing a controller inter-face, control modules have connectors forsharing common timestamps with otherAX/4000 systems. The GPS/Ethernet ControlModule also has connectors for receiving auniversal timestamp anywhere in the worldusing an optional global positioning system(GPS) receiver.

ControllerThe controller is an external PC or workstationconnected to the chassis via a GPIB cable orEthernet-based LAN. Adtech’s highly acclaimedcontroller software is available in both Windowsand UNIX versions.A complete library of CFunctions and Tcl exten-sions is also available forthose requiring customtest applications.A full line of Telcordia™Technologies test suitesprovides off-the-shelf,conformance andinteroperability testing.

The AX/4000 is a fully modular system with interchangeable test modules, port interfaces, and

chassis types. Although there are thousands of different combinations possible for a single

chassis system, determining which components are needed can be done in three basic steps.

1 Select a chassis and control options. Alltest modules and port interfaces will work ineither chassis. The primary differences betweenthe two are the mainframe has 16 free slots andcan be rack mounted. The portable has four freeslots and a handle for easy transport.

Each chassis is shipped with the controlmodule of your choice. The control module pro-vides the interface for connecting the chassis to acontroller PC or workstation, either by directcable connection or via an Ethernet-based LAN.

The AX/4000 can be controlled from a PC,UNIX workstation, or any C compatible plat-form. Adtech provides a comprehensiveWindows-based graphical userinterface that is also avail-able in a UNIXversion. Or youcan write yourown controlapplication usingour C Functionlibrary and Tclextensions.

2 Select the test modules. Each testmodule is essentially a single port tester that canoperate independently or as part of a largermulti-port test setup. Pages 4-7 describe some ofthe basic test functions. The selection guide in theback will help you determine which products areavailable for each test module.

3 Select the port interfaces. Port inter-faces provide the physical interfaces that connectthe test modules to the equipment or networkunder test. Port interfaces are interchangeableand most will work with more than one testmodule. Generator, generator/analyzer andunidirectional emulator modules require oneinterface. Generator/dual analyzer andbi-directional emulator modules require twointerfaces.

Port InterfacesThe AX/4000 uses inexpensive, plug-in port interfaces to provide the physical interface for AX/4000 testmodules. These cards are interchangeable allowing a single test module to perform tests with a variety ofphysical connections and speeds. Over 30 port interfaces are available supporting a wide range of interfacestandards for ATM, Frame Relay, Ethernet, and IP. Adtech also provides multi-function port interfaces thatsupport multiple speeds and transmission technologies.

Test ModulesThe actual broadband testing occurs inside theAX/4000 test modules. Adtech currently pro-duces ten different test modules to supportdifferent test requirements and speeds. All testmodules, except for the ATM Network Impair-ment Emulator modules, can support multipletransmission technologies.

Most modules can be converted to a dif-ferent configuration. For example a Generatoronly module can be converted to a Genera-tor/Analyzer or Generator/Dual Analyzer.
