Sabrina
SHALOM FROM THE DIRECTOR
Who thought the Philadelphia Eagles would get as far as they did? Who knew we were going to have such a cold,
cold winter? Maybe some things can statistically be
predicted by studying the new catch all word,
algorithms, but many things just happen and it is the
human condition to learn how to adjust to the constant
changes in our lives. You must be asking yourself, “What
is Marcy talking about?”
We have become so dependent on our volunteer run
activities, that when those volunteers are not available,
we are virtually at a standstill. Our longstanding Yiddish
maven, Al Ritter, is currently recuperating from a heart
attack. I know you all join me in wishing him a speedy
recovery. In his absence, which we hope is time limited,
he has left a huge gap. If you or anyone you know has
an interest in or knowledge of Yiddish language and/or
culture and would like to share this with other Yiddish lovers, please have them contact me.
Also, the Danowitz brothers, who have graciously taken
over the running of the Tuesday afternoon News &
Views group, have taken a well-deserved hiatus until the
spring. This group has grown exponentially since they
volunteered to lead these stimulating discussions
dissecting the ever- changing political landscape. We
are looking for individuals who have a passion for
current events and are willing to lead discussions with
their peers on Tuesdays from 1-2pm. If several people
express an interest, then we can rotate leaders so no
one person has to volunteer every week.
We truly value and appreciate our volunteers. They are
an integral thread in the fabric of our Department. We
will keep you up-to-date on the status of these two very
important programs.

CULTURAL CORNER As the Cultural Director, I get a bird’s eye view of what the community enjoys and what they like to support. Sometimes I am surprised at what folks will attend, but many times, I just get to kvell over what inspires people. Last year, we launched The Forum: An interactive and engaging night of Jewish Learning. It was welcomed with open arms throughout the community by presenters and attendees. Over 250 people attended last year and this year we expect even more.
When we sent out the request for presenters, we were truly overwhelmed by the wealth of wisdom and the variety of classes, not to mention how diverse the teachers are and that just about every Jewish institution is involved. Why shouldn't I kvell that our community loves to learn and be part of programs like this. It makes my heart full to see how rich our community is and eager to maintain their Jewish education.
The Forum will be offering over 35 classes including interactive classes like Hamanthashen Baking, Israeli Dance, Bibliodrama and many more. There are discussions relevant to today's headlines, parenting and grand-parenting, Jewish identity and good old fashioned text course classes delving into the holidays and traditions. New this year, we have a track with three classes offered in Hebrew only.
I'm so excited about bringing the JCC to life on Saturday Night, Feb. 10, at 7:30pm, when just about every classroom will be filled with some type of learning. Register today at www.katzjcc.org/forum or in the adult department. Come be part of the excitement and kvell with me.

TIPS TO MAKE CROWDS
HEARING FRIENDLY
(Adapted from AARP)
Listening is an important part of hearing and you can
train yourself to listen better. You can also use
technology to improve listening.
Focus on one speaker at a time. If it’s a small group or
a group of friends, ask that people talk one at a time.
One person at a time eventually becomes a kind of
natural rhythm in conversation.
Seat yourself strategically. Do not sit near the kitchen
or a noisy child or next to someone who never stops talking.
Practice mindful listening. Watch the impulse to say
“What?” or “Huh?” Think before you respond. What’s the
context of the conversation? People with hearing loss
are told not to pretend they’ve heard and not to guess.
Instead of simply saying “what?” ask about something
specific, like “Did you say that Ann or Nan was at the
hospital with Carol? I didn’t get the name.”
Be specific about what you missed. Jaclyn Spitzer,
director of audiology and speech-language pathology at
Columbia University Medical School, states, “When you
say ‘Huh?’ or ‘What did you say?’ the speaker doesn’t
even know where to start,” she said. They’re left
wondering.
Technology is your friend. Wear your hearing aids! If
you are at a facility with assistive technology, ask for it and use it. Don't be embarrassed. People will applaud
you for trying to improve your hearing

COUPLES CLUB Steve Kravitz
January ushered in the New Year with frigid
temperatures, snow and ice. However, cold weather
didn’t discourage Couples Club members from stepping
out on New Year’s Eve for dinner, movies and family
celebrations. Following the official New Year’s
celebration, the JCC Adult Department offered an
After New Year’s Bruncheon, consisting of bagels, lox,
white fish and tuna salad, sparkling cider and rugelach.
Thirty-six Couples Club members enjoyed the food,
dancing and musical entertainment. It was a great way
to celebrate the New Year with dear friends.
Our January meeting program featured Dr. James Flowers. Dr. Flowers oversees Cooper University Health Care’s growing Urgent Care network, which currently includes centers in Audubon, Cherry Hill, Cinnaminson and Runnemede. Dr. Flowers spoke about Urgent Care’s ability to provide high-quality health care near to where most of us live and work. During January we also supported the JCC and Cherry Hill Arts Council, Songs of Sinatra and Friends. February is a quiet month with many of our members
off to warm places. However, planning is under way for
2018. In addition to our meetings and the programs
presented at the meeting, we have frequent group
events. We plan to attend Dance to the Movies, at the
Bucks County Playhouse on March 8, JCC’s film festival,
a Rotary concert on March 25, the South Jersey
Philharmonic on April 22, the JCC march from Cherry Hill East to the JCC on April 22, and a high school play,
to name a few.
The Couples Club meets the second Tuesday of the month (except February), 7:30 pm at the JCC. As members of the JCC you and your significant other can join the Couples Club at no additional cost. If you are interested in attending a meeting, stop by the Adult Department for more information.

INCLEMENT WEATHER
PROCEDURES
We have a number of ways in which we communicate
the opening and closing of the JCC during inclement
weather days. The criteria of each department and
agency can differ, so if one of these methods does not
give you the specific answer you are looking for, try
another or wait to try again. In our department, we
have to wait to hear from instructors, transportation
services and the agency supervising our lunch program
before we make a final decision.
• If you have the ability to text on your cell phone,
text the following: KATZMEMBER TO 24587. You
will then receive emergency and critical information
from the JCC. You can opt out at any time by
texting: STOP to 24587.
• You can look on Katz JCC website: www.katzjcc.org.
• You can call the JCC after 7am: 856-424-4444. If the
information you need has not yet been updated on
the Voice Mail, wait for the operator. If you just get
voice mail, leave your message.
Do not assume if the JCC is open, that all programs
are also operating. Often Health & Wellness will be
open when other programs are not. Wait until you
receive the answer for the specific program(s) you are
inquiring about.
Thank you for your understanding. If you have any
further questions, please don’t hesitate to ask any of us
for clarification.
THE CAFÉ AT THE J IS CLOSING
The Café is closing February 10, 2018. We will miss the convenience of having the Café. At this point, there are no plans to replace the Café. If you frequent the Café and have not tried J Dining, please consider our daily lunch program. “Try us, you may like us.” We have added more soups, salads and sandwiches to the menu, and we are always open to suggestions.
Meet your friends for lunch at J Dining before or after Life Long Learning classes. Meals are Kosher and prepared fresh on site. Come and dine with your JCC family. To see our menu on line, please go to:
