• Step I: Sign up for an experiment: come in person to HPP J14 onMonday 10h30 - 11h30Wednesday 15h00 - 16h00

• Step II:Read the manual (and ask/look for additional material when unclear), get familiar with the needed safety regulations and (only after that!) get in touch with the assistant

All assistants are present every Monday - personal appointments possible on other days

• Step III: Perform the experimentPlan about 2-3 weeksDuring this period you “own” the experiment Mon - Fri (8h00 - 18h00)

(excluding Thursdays - needed for experiments maintenance) Labs are closed during semester breaks and ETH holidays

• Step IV: ”Release” the experiment (HPP J14)- Get the (physical or electronic) signature "measurement finished" from your assistant, confirming you

are done with the data taking

• Step V: Write report- hand in report to assistant: maximum 3 weeks after the end of the experiment- implement all corrections required by assistant- (physical or electronic) signature "report handed in" from assistant

• Step VI: Hand in report to VP-heads IN PERSON and within the deadline !

Several experiments are to be completed by single students, when working in larger teams:

• Everybody should contribute to the measurement

• Each student performs her/his own independent data analysis

• Each student writes her/his own independent report

ALL reports have to be handed in (to the assistant) before the end of the semester

• Incomplete experiments “expire” at the end of the semester

Physical Logbook• You are required to keep a physical logbook (not electronic)

for all the experiments you perform

• Each experiment starts with a logbook entry of its title and starting date

• Use the logbook to take notes about the experiment, experimental procedures, measurements, results, etc…

• Ask the assistant's signatures "measurement finished" and "report handed in" in the logbook. If for any reason the assistant cannot be physically present to sign the logbook, he will in any case update the status of your experiment in an internal VP-database and let you know. This is OK too !

Getting ECTS credit points (7 pts)

Each experiment counts as 1 “Praktikum-point”

ASL AstroweekASL IQE Atom Photon InteractionASL LFKP Cleanroom

You need to collect 4 “Praktikum -points” within 1 year, meaning:

a) Report accepted and signed by assistant AND

b) Report shown IN PERSON and accepted by VP-heads

Exceptionally an extra “Praktikum -point” can be assigned for additional work done and agreed beforehand with VP-heads (e.g. improve documentation, improve the experiment, implement a new idea about the experiment)

count as 2 “Praktikum -points”

In case of troubles:• Try to solve experimental issues first by yourself

- If something is broken: contact the assistant- For severe damages the lab technicians will help

• ANY ACCIDENT (even the smallest) has to be immediately reported to the VP-heads.

• Communicate with teaching assistants/VP heads. Belated issues always require more efforts to be solved

Your SAFETY is our primary concern !And it must be your primary concern too.

You are the first responsible for your own safety !During experiments you may be required to operate:- lasers- radioactive sources- pressurized gases- cryogenic liquids- etc..

A safety introduction will follow later this morning.You are required to participate and obtain a participation certificate the end of it.Without a signed certificate you will not be allowed to perform the experiments !Remember to collect your certificates at the end of the safety introduction.

Experiments involving lasers and cryogenic liquids MUST BE performed by Two Persons (Two-Body Rule of safe work).

For safety reasons, in case of pregnancy / breast feeding, the access to some of the experiments is restricted. Please contact: [email protected]

In our labs, when any sign of plagiarism or scientific mis-conduct is spotted (e.g. use data taken in previous years / by different persons, copied analyses/ reports, etc…)

the student might be asked to reanalyse the data and/or rewrite the report and/or repeat the entire experiment

Data analysis toolbox• Required for all students • time and place:

Lectures: Mo 16-17 (15.45-16.30), HPV G5Exercises: Mo 17-18 (16.45-17.30), HIT F11.1,HIT J51, HIT J53, HIT K51, HIT K52

• first lecture: Sept 30th, 2019This is not a full fledged statistics course (if interested there are several good courses at ETH). The goal is to provide you with the tools you will need to properly extract information from the data you take.Main topics:

- data representation: plots, histograms- characterize datasets: mean, variance, etc…- statistical and systematic uncertainties- error estimation and propagation- probability density function - covariance and correlation matrices- parameters estimators and their properties (fits):

- Least Squares (X2 ) fit - Likelihood fit

- Goodness of fit (X2)- How to generate simple Monte Carlo samples

We will use jupyter notebooks (python):this afternoon after the first lecture the assistants will help youtroubleshooting the installation(see mail “Python for Statistics classes”
