2017-2018 Academic Year Fall Semester COMU ELT Department Advanced Reading and Writing Course S. Razı 1 Title of the Course: Advanced Reading and Writing Skills 1 Course-No: İNÖ107 Semester: 1 st Year 1 st Semester (Fall) Course type: Lecture Hours- Practice/Week: 3-0 Credits Local ECTS Status: Compulsory Language of Instruction: English 3 6 Lecturer: Assistant Professor Dr. Salim Razı Contact: Web: www.salimrazi.com Email: [email protected] Tel: +90 286 2171303 ext: 3526 - 3661 Fax: +90 286 2120751 Course description: This course aims to develop advanced written skills by means of critical analysis of academic texts. Learners will be familiarized with several effective reading strategies, mainly metacognitive ones, by the help of which they can increase their reading skills. Readings will come from the relevant literature in various ways such as academic books and journals which enable learners to develop and increase vocabulary in an academic context with the hope of contributing to their reading and writing skills. Therefore, students will be able to comprehend contrasting viewpoints and to predict and identify main ideas. It also aims to equip students with intensive and extensive reading habits which will then foster their reading and writing speeds. Critical thinking skills such as synthesizing information or analyzing a problem as well as reacting on the basis of evaluation are fostered. Such sub-skills of reading are employed by the students in their writing assignments. The course mainly encourages learners to write academic texts. Learners will have the opportunity of scaffolding through peer feedback exchange on their written assignments. Learners will be expected to analyse and produce essays considering the organization, coherence, cohesion, unity, vocabulary selection, in-text citations rules including quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing as this course aims to teach academic writing to students who need to present and defend their own points of view clearly and persuasively. Students also work to master the norms of in-text citations and attributing data from print and other sources, and to observe the methods of acknowledging the research findings of others, specifically in the APA style.
