Agitator pressure fi lters are best suited for batch fi ltration of liquids having high solids content, especially when sophisticated treatment of the solids afterwards is intended. The liquid is sepa-rated mechanically through a porous layer (fi lter medium) either by means of a vacuum or atmos-pheric pressure or with the help of pressure or a combination of vacuum and pressure. A special agitator improves the effectiveness of the fi ltration and allows the solid material to be discharged mechanically. Since the bottom of the fi lter is horizontal, an even fi lter cake forms, en-suring the best possible dehydration of the solid material.

The apparatus is designed to carry out the following processes:• Filtration• Agitation • Washing• Re-suspension• Mixing• Extraction• Crystallization• Drying

Design:

• Product-wetted materialsAll product-wetted material for the agitator pres-sure fi lter generally consists of stainless steel1.4571. Depending on the requirements, the suc-tion fi lters can also be made out of higher quality stainless steel alloys or nickel alloys, such as Ha-stelloy ® C 22.

• Requirement profi leDepending on the intended use, the machines can be offered as the standard chemical model or else as a food-rated ( FDA ) or pharmaceutical-rated ( GMP ) version. The ATEX execution is selected in accordance with the existing zone classifi cation.

• SizesWe build agitator pressure fi lters in all common sizes, from a laboratory fi lter with a fi lter surface area of 0.15 sqm to large-scale apparatuses with an available fi ltering area of 8 sqm.

• Scope of delivery / package unitUpon customer request, the required peripheral equipment of the apparatuses, such as vacuum pump station, solvent condensers, temperature control systems or process controls can also be provided.

ExtractingThe agitator pressure fi lters are excellent for ex-traction, i.e. dissolving out individual components from the mixture using the appropriate solvent. For this purpose, the mixture and the solvent are ad-ded together to the fi lter layer. The mixing action of the agitator reduces the need for solvent and shortens the extraction times.

CrystallizationCrystallization in batch mode is another work process for which the agitator pressure fi lters are well-suited.This separation process is based on contact or va-cuum cooling. In the case of contact cooling, the heat exchange takes place through the heating-cooling space of the apparatus; in the case of va-cuum cooling, the cooling process takes place by the removal of heat during evaporation. In both cases, the additional stirring distributes the heat better, allowing the crystal particles to be held in suspension.

DryingSince the inside of the fi lter forms a sealed va-cuum, the apparatus can be used for drying the fi lter cake after fi ltration is completed. In this case, the pressure fi lter housing, the bottom of the fi lter and the agitator can be heated. The agitator beam provides for constant shifting of the matter. The drying process can be accelerated by supplying hot air or pre-warmed inert gas through the fi lter cake.

Filtration /Agitation

The solid/liquid mixture is poured inside the ap-paratus through a fi lling port. Filtration is initiated with the aid of the pressure difference above and below the fi lter tray (pressure in the fi lter housing top, vacuum on the bottom of the fi lter, as the case may be). The fi lter cake builds up on the fi lter medium and is spread smooth by lowering of the height-adjustable agitator during the pro-cessing step. This seals any dry cracks that have opened up and greatly improves the degree of drying. The discharge of the solid matter starts when the agitator begins rotating in the oppo-site direction. When it is lowered even further, the fi lter cake is peeled off by the slanted blades layer-by-layer and discharged through the valve on the side.

Washing/Re-suspension/Mixing

The purpose of the washing process is to recover as much valuable fi ltrate as possible or to clean off contamination from earlier processes still clin-ging to the fi lter cake. Cleaning fl uid is distributed evenly through a jet nozzle system, and rinses the solid matter one or more times, depending on the need. The agitator helps to mix the residual solid mat-ter thoroughly with the cleaning fl uid during the washing process. Once the washing process has ended, the cleaning fl uid is suctioned off or pressed back out and the cleaned solid matter is discharged.
