Advent 2020 Advent is a time of preparation for Christmas; a readying of our hearts to welcome the Christ Child. Each week, we will light a candle on an Advent wreath and focus on a single aspect of Christmas—the hope, peace, joy and love the anticipation of celebrating the birth of Christ brings to our lives. Begin the first week of Advent by reading the above paragraph aloud and then use the instructions, written in blue, and public readings, written in white, on the next page: Hope.

Advent2020

Advent is a time of preparation for Christmas; a readying of our hearts to welcome the Christ Child. Each week, we will light a candle on an Advent wreath and focus on a single aspect of Christmas—the hope, peace, joy and love the anticipation of celebrating the birth of Christ brings to our lives.

Begin the first week of Advent by reading the above paragraph aloud and then use the instructions, written in blue, and public readings, written in white, on the next page: Hope.

Hopeweek one

“Today, we light the Candle of Hope.” Light a candle on your Advent wreath

This is the candle of Hope. We have hope as we prepare our hearts for the coming of the Christ Child, in unison with Christians around the world.

Read Isaiah 9:2-5Say a short prayer focused on the hope that Christ brings to all.Sing a verse (or more) of "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel."

Peaceweek two

Light the candle from the previous week before you begin.The Candle of Hope is already lit. Today we light the Candle of Peace, the second candle of Advent.

Light the second candle on the Advent wreath.As we prepare for the coming of Christ, remember that He is our hope and our peace. Only God can give us real peace; the peace that is beyond human understanding.

Read Isaiah 9:6-7.Say a short prayer focused on the peace that Christ brings to all.Sing a verse (or more) of "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear."

Joyweek three

Light the two candles from the previous weeks before you begin.

The Candles of Hope and Peace are already lit. Today we light the Candle of Joy, the third candle of Advent.

Light the third candle.As we prepare for the coming of the Christ, our hearts overflow with joy in anticipation of his birth.

Read Isaiah 12:2-6.Say a short prayer focused on the joy we have in knowing Jesus, God’s Son.Sing a verse (or more) of "Angels We Have Heard on High."

Loveweek four

Light the three candles from the previous weeks before you begin.

The Candles of Hope, Peace and Joy are already lit. Today we light the Candle of Love, the fourth candle of Advent.

Light the fourth candle.Jesus shared self-sacrificing love as He ministered to those around him. During this Advent season, let us extend kindness and help to others and share our gifts with others. God is love. Let us be love also.

Read Deuteronomy 10:17-19a.Say a short prayer focused on the love we receive from God and how we can share that love with others.Sing a verse (or more) of "Joy to the World."

ChristmasLight the four candles from the previous weeks before you begin..

The Candles of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love are already lit. Today we light the Christ Candle!

Light the final candle.Jesus is born. Jesus has come. Jesus is our salvation.

Read a passage of Jesus birth from one of the gospels.Say a short prayer of thanks and celebration of Christ’s birth.Sing a verse (or more) of "The First Noel."
