The author’sreal-life experience in the mid-60’s the basis for the play, when sheworked as a secretary for Francis Biddle at his home in Washington,D.C. Judge Biddle had been Attorney General under FranklinRoosevelt. After the war, President Truman named him ChiefJudge of the Tribunal at Nuremberg. Dates are Oct. 14, 15, 21 & 22at 8pm and Oct. 16 & 23 at 2:30pm. Tickets are $16; under 18 $10and reservations can be made at 518-674-2007 or www.slca-ctp.org. HIGHLIGHT ACTING TROUPE PRESENTS

ARSENIC AND OLD LACEThe Highlight Acting Troupe will be presenting Arsenic and OldLace written by Joseph Kesselring and directed by Ron LeVan.Arsenic and Old Lace is a comedy about the sweet old Brewstersisters (Lucy Breyer, Georgia Visconti), who are beloved intheir Brooklyn neighborhood for their many charitable acts. One charity which the ladies don’t advertise is their ongoingeffort to permit lonely bachelors to die with smiles on theirfaces—by serving said bachelors elderberry wine spiked witharsenic. When the sisters’ drama-critic nephew Mortimer (A.J.Printsky) stumbles onto their secret, he is understandably putout—especially since he has just become engaged to ElaineHarper (Rebecca Hoffay). Given the homicidal tendencies ofhis aunts, the sinister activities of his escaped-convict olderbrother Jonathan (Mark Simpson) and the disruptive behaviorof younger brother Teddy (Mark Strock)—who is convincedthat he’s really Theodore Roosevelt, and runs around thehouse yelling “CHAAAAARGGGE”- he is hesitant to marry Elaine.Further complications ensue when the murderous JonathanBrewster arrives home, with his snivelling accomplice Dr.Einstein (Alan Angelo) in tow. When Jonathan learns that hisdarling aunts have killed twelve men, he is incensed—they’rechallenging his own record of murders. The show dates are Oct. 14, 15, 21, 22 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 16and 23 and 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $12 forseniors and students. OLD DOG, STRAY DOGEvery year animal control officers receive calls about old dogswho suddenly and mysteriously disappear. The dog may havestayed on the property for 10 years or more with no inclinationto leave. Dog owners tend to feel comfortable as the dogages. After all, if he hasn’t wandered off by now he isn’t likelyto. Yet, one day the old dog is gone. Unfortunately, too manyof these old dogs are never seen alive again. Most owners donot consider the fact that, as dogs age, they share some ofthe same changes as humans. Some dogs don’t see as well orhear as well as they used to. Arthritis is common as well aschanges in behavior.Cognitive changes may progress slowly and may be easy tomiss. Like people, dogs vary greatly in how they age. Whendementia occurs in dogs, it can involve subtle or dramaticbehavior. A dog may appear disoriented at times. His sleepinghabits may change, his housebreaking may suffer and he maynot respond to circumstances as he used to. A dog may exhibitone sign of dementia or many. One of the most commonbehaviors is an old dog walking aimlessly. It is not at all unusualfor an old dog to simply walk, putting one foot in front of theother, with no destination in mind. This behavior is not unusualin humans with dementia, as we know. In the case of a dogwho always stayed on the property without use of a fence, wenow have a dog walking aimlessly into the woods or roadway. When these dogs get tired, they simply lay down whereverthey are, in a ditch, in the road or in the woods. If and whenthey get up again, many of these poor animals have no directionof travel in mind. If they get too wet, too cold and too lost, theold dog may not survive. It is important to pay close attention to behavior changes inaging dogs. If there are signs of disorientation, see yourveterinarian. There are some drugs that may help. At thevery least, the older dog should be safely contained in a fencedyard and watched closely.~Catherine Crawmer, Animal Control Officer 477-8230

LANSINGBURGH HISTORICAL SOCIETY

OCTOBER MEETING

Our October meeting will be held on Thursday, October 13th, at7:30PM at the Melville House located on the corner of 114th Streetand First Avenue in Lansingburgh. Michael Esposito, a long-timeTroy resident and retired librarian, will speak about Troy’s LittleItaly. His book on this subject was issued by Arcadia Publishing in2009. Italian immigrants began arriving in Troy in the late 1880s,escaping the abject poverty of their homeland. They settled justsouth of the central business district, in an area bustling with activity. The neighborhood contained blocks of two- and three-story brickbuildings and a mix of row houses and freestanding homes onstreets adjacent to Mount Ida, the city’s most prominent geographicfeature. These Italian immigrants began opening small businesses, particularly on Fourth Street, the center of the Little Italyneighborhood, and soon became an important part of Troy’s culturalheritage. Signed and inscribed copies of his book will be availablefor purchase at the meeting. The meeting is open to the public andrefreshments will be served. For further information, call the Societyat 235-7647 or 235-3501 (recorded message), or consult the Society’swebsite at http://www/lansingburghhistoricalsociety.org/

POESTENKILL SPIRIT DAY FLOOD RELIEF

EVENT - OCTOBER 29th

The Town of Poestenkill was heavily impacted by the recentsevere weather caused by Tropical Storms Irene and Lee. Theresultant flooding from these storms washed out roads, eroded land along the Poesten Kill and destroyed severalhomes as well as severely damaging others. There are stillmany town residents who are struggling to recover from theresults of the flooding that ravaged their homes and property.A collaboration of town organizations will be sponsoring anevent, Poestenkill Spirit Day, to raise funds to aid thoseresidents who have been adversely affected. This benefit is still in the planning stages. Thus far, the programincludes a roast beef dinner, sponsored by the townorganizations, at the Poestenkill Fire Department, a raffle ofitems donated by local merchants and a special raffle of alarge screen TV. It will also be an opportunity for the communityto come together to aid our neighbors. Please save the date, October 29. As more details becomeavailable, they will be announced in The Advertiser and on theTown of Poestenkill website (www.townofpoestenkillny.org)and the Poestenkil l Library website(www.poestenkilllibrary.org).

MILITARY MUSEUM DISPLAYS QUILT

HONORING MOTHERS & FALLEN SERVICE

MEMBERSA quilt featuring the names of 24 Capital Region servicemembers who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001goes on display at the New York State Military Museum nextweek. The quilt features white stars on a blue backgroundembroidered with the name of the service member and nextto that is gold star featuring the name of the service membersmother. The quilt is a tribute from the Capital Region Chapter of BlueStar Mothers of America Inc. to the Gold Star mothers whohave lost sons or daughters in the two wars, said Janet Moran, the chapter president of Blue Star Mothers. The stars reference banners that have been hung in housesand windows since World War I to indicate a member of thefamily serving in combat and a death in combat.During World War I, families with one or more members servingin the military would hang banners in the window with one, two, or more blue stars for each service member. When afamily member was killed in action, the blue star became agold star.In 1928, a group of mothers whose sons had been killed inthe war formed the Gold Star Mothers as a supportorganization and as a way to remember their children.Blue Star Mothers was organized in 1998 as a way for womenwith sons and daughters in the military to support their childrenand all military members. The Capital Region Blue Star Mothers began working on theirtribute quilt in July. Some of the 1090 members cut out fabricwhile others did the sewing, Moran said. The quilt was formally presented to the Gold Star Mothersfrom the Capital Region on Sept. 24 and will hang in themuseum in October as a way to share it with the public,Moran said. The quilt complements the recently opened exhibit on theNew York National Guard since Sept. 11, 2001, said MilitaryHistory Museum curator Courtney Burns. A part of the exhibitshonors the 32 Soldiers of the New York Army National Guardwho have died in Iraq and Afghanistan, he said. The New York State Military Museum is located in the SaratogaSprings Armory at 61 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs, NY,12866.
