Dr. Kenneth W. Boynton beganhis dental practice over 27 yearsago in a small house in the heartof Kinderhook. Several yearslater, joined by a support staffof two, Dr. Boynton moved hispractice to the Valatie MedicalArts Center, located at theintersection of Route 9 and MainStreet in the Village of Valatie.Eager to serve patients and theirfamilies that he came to know ona first name basis, he enhancedthe services provided at thepractice with state of the artdentistry using the most current

tools and techniques at his disposal. Dentistry at this practiceis personalized to meet the unique requirements of each patient. As a private, dentist-owned practice, it is important to Dr.Boynton that patient care is not dictated by the constraints ofa mass marketed dental corporation or cost driven insuranceindustry. Patients can rest assured that in choosing Dr.Boynton’s family dental practice, every patient is given thetime and attention necessary to explore dental concerns, develop treatment plans specific to their own needs and todevelop a relationship with the professionals entrusted withtheir care.As the years passed, the practice has grown leaps and bounds.Dr. Boynton has embarked on a journey to grow his practice inresponse to the increasing number of patients who are lookingfor quality care in a warm and caring environment. Dr. Boyntonanticipates the addition of another doctor joining the staff inthe near future. A recent addition to the professional staff, who currently splits his time between St Peter’s Dental Clinicand Dr. Boynton’s, Dr. Anthony Cavanagh brings the value ofhis recent schooling and well developed skill set to the practice.Patients appreciate the flexibility of extended hours and theability to have a full array of services available to them thanksto the combined skill set of dedicated professionals.Service is not just limited to dental cleanings, fillings, crownsand bridges. Dental care begins with an unhurried discussionof the patient dental history and concerns followed by athorough examination, including digital x-rays and photos, asnecessary. Treatment plans are developed using a variety oftooth restoration options including dental fillings, bridges, implants, and time saving – one appointment Cerec crowns.Conscientious hygiene care at the office and follow-up at homehelp to limit patients’ exposure to more involved and potentiallyexpensive restorative treatment. Patients can also takeadvantage of a variety of tooth whitening and veneer optionsto enhance their appearance and confidence. The staff atKenneth W. Boynton, DMD, is always available to answerquestions about the practice and the care that they will receive.

SCHODACK SHOULD PLAN FOR

FUTURE GENERATIONS

Letter to the Editor: The year is 2050, or some future time, andSchodack has developed into a metropolis with businesses of manytypes stretching out Rt. 20 as far as Beaver Rd., including the backland as well as along the highway because of a 12 inch water lineinstalled back around year 2000.All of Rt. 9 has also been pretty much developed. Rt. 20 is having asewer problem as the planners back around 2013 felt an 8 inch linewould be adequate. Maybe they didn’t think about a gravity sewerline being effective all the way to Beaver Rd. and maybe the 8 inchline would be adequate to that point. But now development hashalted, because that 8 inch line cannot take any more sewerage, especially when it reaches the 9 & 20 split because the sewage frompart of or all of Rt. 9 is also joining the 8 inch main. Here we are back in 2013; What 8" main you may ask? DunkinDoughnuts (DD) is about to build an 8" sewer line to join the sewerline in Schodack Center. Now is the time to prevent that problem which our future generationswill encounter. DD is paying for all the expense of installing the newsewer line from their establishment across from the Schodack Policestation all the way to Kraft Rd. The gravity 8 inch line would runalong Rt. 9&20 only as far as the Moordeners Kill, as the rest of theline would be a smaller line under pressure and appears to beadequate. Wouldn’t it be advisable for Schodack to offer to pay thedifference of the cost of 12 inch pipe instead of the 8 inch pipe? Isuspect the ditch would be the same size, so the excavation wouldnot cost any extra. Why chance an 8 inch bottle neck, especially when we are talkingof only about 2,000 feet. If the town has a 12 inch line underpressure for fresh water, how can an 8 inch line return the sewerwater?~ Raymond W. Lemka, Schodack residentEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for allintents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of itscontents.

TAKE ‘EM OUT IN CUFFS!Letter to the Editor: But…. don’t use my name.As a matter of fact, I’m not giving you my nameeither. I’m an anonymous caller. Whatever I tellyou is the absolute truth. Now go and arrestthem. Take their dog away from them and givethem a hefty fine. They deserve it. After all, there are laws! Go get ‘em. Click! They hang up. The call ismade from a blocked number.Messages such as this are also sent by email and left on theanswering machine. They almost always mention that thereare laws. That much is correct. There are laws. One importantlaw these callers don’t mention states that there must be awitness to a violation of the law before a ticket is issued. If a dog is barking keeping you up all night, destroying yourproperty or attempting to attack your family, there is a legalprocedure in place to address the problem. Without it, falseaccusations and vendetta-based complaints would fill thecourts. If you have a problem with your neighbor, it may be a goodidea to talk to your neighbor first. If no remedy can be found, call your municipal animal control officer for information onother options. Give the officer your name and contactinformation, and then tell the truth without embellishment. There are laws, but you can’t accomplish anything if yourprimary concern is hiding your identity.~ Catherine Crawmer, Animal Control Officer 477-8230

AUTISM: A MOTHER’S PERSPECTIVEIn the spirit of Autism Awareness month, I feel the need to laymy heart out in this piece. As most of you know, I am amother. I am also a mother of a child with Autism. Two and ahalf years ago, my husband and I were handed this diagnosisand it completely turned our lives upside down. Sure, theintense schedule with therapists, numerous doctors, onlineresearch and parental guilt were all abundant. But what reallyturned our lives upside down was the blessing that is our son.He has taught us that the smallest moments can mean somuch. No money can buy the extreme pride that comes afterhearing “mommy” for the first time at age 3 ½, getting a kissand hug at age 4 or hearing him use a sentence for the firsttime at age 4 1/2. He has taught us to be happy. I amoverjoyed when I hear Max’s “Eeeee!” when he gets too happyto contain himself, like when he’s playing in the mud. Sometimes, when nobody is looking, I’ll play in the mud too. It truly istherapy money can’t buy! He’s taught us to love. I used tosee so much dark in the world. But our son radiates with somuch love, for everything, that I can finally see the good inthis world. Lastly, he has taught us to be ourselves. God didnot put our son on this Earth to be like someone else. He isgoing to use his intelligence and perspective to make adifference. We can all learn something here. What may seem as a hugedisappointment may in turn be a blessing in disguise. Cherishthe little moments. All is well. Just love. Be you. Sometimesit seems too simple, doesn’t it?

Finally! Averill Park varsity sports have entered the springseason. Multiple sport teams have put on their uniforms andentered the battle of the regular season. This week was the first week of sports competition for our ladylacrosse Warriors. AP’s first competition was against Colonieon Thursday, the 4th of April. The game was hard fought, andAP ended up demolishing Colonie, 13-9. A great first gamewas played by Emily Halpin, who scored 5 goals, and MorganLionarons, who scored 4. The next day, the Ladies challengedBethlehem. The Warriors again brought out a great game, butunfortunately, fell short 17-8. Top Goal scorers were SofiSorriento, who scored 3 goals, and Morgan Lionarons andMegan Lettko, who each scored 2 goals. Great start to theseason ladies, keep it up!The baseball and softball teams also started their seasons thisweek. AP’s baseball team played Colonie on Friday 4/05. APpulled out a win for their first game of the season, beatingColonie 7-5. Then the boys took on Catholic Central on Friday.Sadly, AP couldn’t keep up their winning momentum and lost,8-3.The softball team also played Colonie this week. The Warriorsplayed Colonie as well on Friday. Although it was a close game, and the girls showed heart, the score did not reflect theirefforts; the ladies fell short, 5-0. Although the AP season didnot get off to the strongest start, both the baseball and softballteams are optimistic in their future performances.Boys and girls outdoor track also started this week, outcomeswill be given in the next column. The spring season has just begun, although, I will not bereporting about it for the next couple of weeks. For the nexttwo weeks, Riley Ludwig, a junior, and athlete at AP, will bereporting the sports while I am on a service trip. I will see youin a couple of weeks, and I assure you, I leave you in goodhands! If you have any questions or comments feel free tocontact me at [email protected].

“AP Freshman Meagan Lettko works thru these Bethlehemdefenders and scores Friday afternoon at APHS”.AP lost in this home opener.

Spring sports here at AverillPark High School are reallystarting to heat up as theseason unfolds. One athlete inparticular, stands out abovethe crowd. Rachel Van Vleck, amember of the Girls’ Varsitysoftball team, is certainly notan athlete to be missed. Rachelhas been playing softball fortwelve years. She beganplaying recreational softball forlocal Classie Lassie teams andeventually began playing forothers. Her main position is thecatcher, but you can also spother playing first base or in theoutfield. To stay in shape for the season, Van Vleck is constantlypracticing skills with her travel teams and also hitting the battingcages every so often. Rachel is extremely dedicated toimproving her game as much as possible, because when thetime comes to play, she loves the feeling of her hard workpaying off. “When you manage to correctly execute a skill, it’sa great feeling,” says the athlete. Rachel’s favorite part ofplaying is when the team manages to be successful offensivelyas well as defensively to end with a solid win. Van Vleck rarelyhas any free time on her hands, because she also has a verypacked school schedule this year. She is currently takingAdvanced Placement Biology, Spanish, Physics, and Pre-Calculus, all while maintaining a 91 GPA. “Being a scholar athleteto me means you have to have good time management in orderto balance school work and the requirements for your sport aswell as your life outside of school,” says Rachel. As for thefuture, she would attend either Russell Sage or The Universityof Rhode Island for nursing. Aside from school and playingsoftball, Rachel enjoys spending time with her family and friendsand also helping to coach a ten and under Classie Lassie Team.Rachel would like to thank her family and coaches for pushingher and supporting her in every part of her life. She would liketo give a special thanks to her dad for inspiring her to haveconfidence and be more outgoing. We wish Rachel and the restof the Girls’ Varsity Softball team the best of luck in the remainderof their season.

A Study in Ineptness-The 1962 Mets

Ronald can be reached at:[email protected]

The annual Spring ritual of Opening Day has come and gone and for those of

us who lived through 5 years on no National League baseball form 1957 to 1962

in New York City, it will only recall the 1962 Mets. We were so grateful to see

our Giants and Dodgers return as the enemy, we overlooked their incompetence.

As the season wore on, we were treated to such clumsy players as “Marvelous Marv”

Throneberry who once hit a ball over 400 feet for what appeared to be a triple. However, on an

appeal play he was deemed to have not touched second base and was ruled out. When Manager

Casey Stengel raced from the dugout to argue the call, the first base umpire told him not to argue

too hard because Throneberry also failed to touch first base.

The Mets had a shortstop Elio Chacon who did not speak English and would routinely run into

Centerfielder Richie Ashburn on pop-ups into short centerfield. After the third collision, Ashburn

sought help from teammate Joe Christopher who was bi-lingual. “How do you say ‘I got it’ in

Spanish?” he asked Christopher. “Yo Lo Tengo”, Christopher replied. When the next pop-up

occurred, Ashburn came running in screaming “Yo Lo Tengo” at the top of his lungs. Chacon

stopped dead in his tracks. Ashburn settled under the ball only to be knocked arse over teakettle

by the left fielder Frank Thomas. He didn’t speak Spanish!

Dick Stuart, affectionately known as Dr. Strangeglove, was once hit on the shoulder by a

wicked line drive. When Casey came out to see his writhing in pain first baseman, Stuart said,

“Casey, I must be getting old. I used to be able to get out of the way of those things”.

Once in Cincinnati with the score 15-0 against them, Casey went out to the mound to take out

the pitcher. He signaled to the bullpen for a reliever. No one came out. He signaled again. Still no

one emerged. He signaled a third time with the same result. Finally, the umpire pointed to the

scoreboard and to Casey, “Maybe they are afraid to come out?”

At the end of year, the Mets gave Ashburn, who had hit .301 for the year, a boat as their Most

Valuable Player. When he put it into the water, it sank!

The most inept player the ’62 Mets ever had was a catcher named Harry Chiti, who was

acquired from the White Sox in July, for a player to be named 30 days later. After 30 days, the

Mets returned Chiti to the White Sox, he was so bad he couldn’t make the ’62 Mets!

TRANSFORMATION....

IN TIME OF WAITING

As the Reformed Churches at Stuyvesant and Nassau movealong in dedicating worship to the Acts of the Apostles, theycome to Saul’s transformation on the road to Damascus. Itwas while Saul had been empowered to round up the followersof Jesus and extradite them to Jerusalem for trial, that he wasblinded and stopped in his footsteps by a voice which heidentified as that of Jesus, asking, “Saul, Saul, why do youpersecute me?” Saul (later called Paul) was led to the city, stopped his former mission, and waited. He waited three days-blind, not eating or drinking; then a godly disciple of Damascus, called Ananias, to whom God made known the conversion ofSaul, baptized him and restored his sight. Once he could see,Saul’s transformation from persecutor to pro claimer in Christwas complete. Join us and come to understand that each of usmay need to wait, wait and give up our comfort, wait, as Godchanges us into the person he wants us to become in serviceto him.The Stuyvesant Reformed Church worships at 9 a.m. in itssanctuary where Church St. meets Route 9J, in the hamlet ofStuyvesant. The Nassau Reformed Church worships at 11 a.m. in its chapelat the Church-School-Building, 43 Church Street (Rte. 20),Nassau.

LET’S DO SOME MATH

Letter to the Editor: Let’s do some math, re: the recent hike inthe state minimum wage. The number of Democrats elected to the State Senate - 33The number of Republicans elected to the State Senate - 30.The number of Senators who said they supported raising theminimum wage right away to $9 an hour. 32. A majority. The percentage of New York voters who supported raising theminimum wage - 80%. A majority of whom wanted a raisecloser to $10 than to $9.Republican voters by 2 to 1 wanted a minimum wage hike. Then how did we come up with a minimum wage hike of only $8an hour this year? Senator Jeff Klein. And his IDC group. 5Democrats who gave power to the minority Republicans inorder to make “democracy work” better. How much money will low-income workers lose by delaying theminimum wage hike to $9 an hour over three years - and thenno indexing? $1.2 billion. Maybe more. Money that could havebeen used to feed their family. Or pay the landlord or utilitycompany. Or buy clothes. And tip workers were dropped. Theynow have to wait for the Labor Department to rule on a newwage order.Republican Senators wanted a subminimum wage for youngworkers. No one else did. So what did the other three men inthe back room agree to: the first tax credit in the US to subsidizeemployers - including Walmart, McDonalds and Burger King - ifthey hire young workers at the minimum wage. The cost to taxpayers: $20 to $40 million a year - or more. Noone really knows. But it creates incentives for employers toincrease the number of low wage jobs that it fills with teenagerspaid exactly the minimum wage rate. What does Sen. Klein get as a reward for his new math? Abigger office, a higher lulu. This is not how democracy is supposed to work.~ Mark A. Dunlea, Executive Director Hunger Action Networkof NYS

RENSSELAER COUNTY CLERK RETURNS

RECORD SURPLUS TO COUNTY COFFERS

Rensselaer County Clerk Frank J. Merola reports that the RensselaerCounty Clerk’s office has posted the largest revenue surplus todate, returning close to $1,000,000.00 to county coffers for FY2012. The Clerk’s office reported a record 2012 revenue of$2,945,012.00 against expenditures of $1,964,000 for a surplustotaling $981,012.00. County officials will use this surplus revenueto offset any potential increases in the county tax rate which hasrisen due to explosive increases in state mandated programs suchas Medicaid. “As a former businessman, the bottom line was finishing in theblack every year. A company or a government that continuallyoperates at a deficit will not be in business for very long.” Mr.Merola said, “I am extremely pleased that my department is able toreturn a sizable surplus to the county coffers despite the challengingeconomic times. More importantly, our expenses declined $40,000from 2011-2012. I am confident that we will continue to returnsurplus revenue for years to come.”In the past seven years, the Clerk’s office has returned surplusrevenues totaling over $3.7 million dollars to the general fund. Thepast three years have seen over $2.2 million returned to the county. This is a result of aggressive revenue enhancement programs suchas the very successful RENEW RENSSELAER motor vehicle andpassport program which has dramatically increased the number ofpassports processed by the Rensselaer County Clerk’s office. Mr.Merola also credits an outstanding DMV department, and anaggressive DMV outreach program that has attracted significantauto dealer business to Rensselaer County and significantly increasedDMV revenue. The photo ID program instituted by Mr. Merola in2006 has proved to be extremely popular, with residents all overthe Capital District coming to Rensselaer County for photo ID. “Like many other departments in County government we aredoing more with less.” Mr. Merola said, “Our courteous and efficientservice has given our office the well deserved reputation as themost customer friendly Clerk’s office in the capital region. Thesenext few years may prove challenging as a result of the economicdownturn, but I am confident that we will continue to return neededmoney to the County for the benefit of our taxpayers.”
