Joe, Mark and David BeckerBecker’s Farm situated at 420 Columbia Turnpike has been anoperating family farm since 1875. Reinhardt Becker purchasedhis first 5 acres from Michael Nagle on October 20, 1875.With fruit trees already in place, Reinhardt began to develop asmall fruit and vegetable business. In 1894 the farm was toosmall to support his growing business. Reinhardt purchasedmore property from David Phillips and continued to farm untilhis death in 1931. His son Frank Becker continued the traditionof farming, expanding the fruit, vegetables and strawberries. Most of the produce was marketed through the Menands Market,as there was a large demand for fresh fruits and vegetables bylocal groceries. After Frank’s death in 1963, his son Frank H. Becker Jr.expanded once again growing sweet corn. At this point, nearlyevery possible piece of tillable ground was used for theproduction of sweet corn and tomatoes. Frank Jr. had grownto the point it was necessary to rent property to keep up withthe demand of the retail consumers. However, in the 70’s and80’s, retail groceries were able to mass market quality freshfruits and vegetables at a less expensive price.Frank Jr. recognized this early on and decided to grow a fewbedding plants to compensate for the declining fruit andvegetable business. This endeavor was an immediate success. He built 3 more greenhouses with growing space of about 3800sq ft. But, in 1989, Frank Jr. became overwhelmed with a full-time job and managing the farm.It was time for additional help. His son David came back to thefarm to manage the greenhouse business. Together they began
to make plans for an extensive expansion project to include astate of the art greenhouse. Today the farm has two state ofthe art greenhouses with computer enhanced environmentalcontrols and computer assisted watering. The total growingarea of all greenhouses currently is 75000 sq ft. with anadditional 35000 sq ft of outside growing area.David now works side by side with his son Mark. Becker’s Farmis also host to several planting seminars; for example, onSaturday, April 30th, Becker’s Farm will be host to Goold’sOrchard for the “Fruit Trees Basic” seminar. On Saturday, April16th, Becker’s Farm will be having an open house to start thenew spring off right. Feel free to contact us throughwww.beckersfarm.com or facebook at www.facebook.com/beckersfarm

RISING TAXES/RISING PAY/SAVING JOBSLetter to the Editor: The Averill Park School District is consideringa 6%, 8%, or 10% tax increase (well beyond inflation), andwill decide at its April 12 meeting. Although tax increases forthe past 3 years have been low, we taxpayers are exhaustedfrom paying huge increases over many, many years before. We’ve had increases of 7%, 8%, 9%, 10%, 11% and more. Afew years of relatively low increases does not begin to “balancethe ledger.” If you think the proposed increases are too high, contact the Board right away. While your taxes keep going up, teachers received this schoolyear yet another pay increase, averaging about 4% perteacher. They have gotten an increase for each of the last 4years, totaling about 20% over this 4-year period. Manyteachers feel they are paid less than what they deserve. Ifthey do suffer a pay inequity, then you taxpayers have helpedto finance a 4-year effort to correct it by increasing their payby 20%! That’s a breathtaking pace by any standard! Inthese dire economic times, we cannot continue right now tocorrect any remaining pay inequities, if, in fact, such inequitiesstill exist. We don’t have the cash! Meanwhile, those of us inthe private sector are experiencing 0% increases or give-backs.Telling teachers we cannot continue to give pay raises duringthese times does not reflect a lack of respect or a lack orappreciation. This is about a lack of cash. We probably alldeserve raises; the money is not there. If teachers agree to a 0% pay raise this fall, we will save about$750,000, equal to about 12 teaching jobs. If teachers agreeto pay 20% of their health insurance premiums (they pay only13% for very good plans, far less than the private sector), wecould save about 3 more jobs for a total of about 15 jobs. Some teachers have told me they are willing to pass on theraises, but you need to express your opinion to your unionleadership.~Ron Rouse, PoestenkillEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the

As legislative representatives of District 2, including the townsof East Greenbush, North Greenbush and Poestenkill, we arehappy to provide our constituents with a report on actionstaken at the March 8, 2011 legislative meeting. With mandated costs increasing daily, we joined an effort byother county officials across the state to reduce costs forcertain programs. Currently, New York State requires countiesto provide Medicaid services that are required by the federalgovernment and Medicaid services that are not required bythe state. The request by county officials, including our countylegislators, calls for counties to be able to opt-out of non-federally mandated Medicaid services. Such an approach wouldallow counties to individually tailor programs to the specificneeds of their counties.County Executive Kathleen Jimino made her annual State ofthe County presentation at the March meeting. The CountyExecutive spoke of the ever-increasing mandates and thepressures caused by mandates on county taxpayers andservices. She also detailed cost-cutting efforts in the countyduring the recession. As legislators, we have recognized the need to reduce costs. The Legislature recently completed a comprehensive re-bid ofthe county’s insurance policy that will generate a $900,000savings over the next three years. The Legislature alsoreduced spending by $130,000 in 2010 and $160,000 in 2009.Legislators also approved the formation of a budget task force, which will encourage bi-partisan review of the upcoming 2012spending plan. Phil Danaher will serve as a representative ofthe majority on the four-member panel. We also mourned the passing of two notable District 2residents. North Greenbush resident Thomas Sharpe passedaway in January. Tom was very active in the veteran’scommunity and served with the U.S. Marines in the KoreanWar.We also mourned the passing of Sergeant James O’Brien, whohad retired from the Troy Police Department and sadly passedaway last December after a long illness. Jim had also servedwith the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Department and the LakeGeorge Village Police Department before joining the Troy PoliceDepartment, and was also active in the community. The next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature isTuesday, April 12, 2011. Residents are welcome to contact usat our legislative offices by writing to the Rensselaer CountyLegislature, 1600 7th Avenue, Troy NY 12180 or by e-mailingus via the off icial legislative website atwww.rensselaercounty.org.
ANOTHER BICENTENNIAL
HISTORICAL UPDATE
Sand Lake Association for Mutual Protection Against HorseThieves (SLAMPAHT)Arthea Gibbs wrote the following for The Courier, November19, 1987.Two horses were stolen from George Link and Jacob Minkler onAug. 30, 1866. As members of the SLAMPAHT, they knew whereto go for help. “By close pursuit of the riders sent out, as earlyas possible, the horses were soon tracked to a wood in thetown of Stephentown, where they were recovered and thethief captured and brought back to Sand Lake,” according toassociation reports. The fate of the shameless thief? “After going through legalpreliminaries, he was assigned rooms in Sheriff Cornell’s mansionin Troy, from whence he is expected soon to be a graduatefrom Sing Sing or Clinton”. Although the association has notcaptured horse thieves or even heard of any being stolen, members continue to meet once a year.Formed by local residents in 1848 for the purpose of retrievingstolen horses and apprehending horse thieves, SLAMPAHT isone of the few remaining in the state. Incorporated by an actof the state Legislature in 1849, the first officers were electedthat year at William Sliter’s Inn in West Sand Lake. TheAssociation was essential to townspeople who relied heavily ontheir horses for traveling on horseback or horse-drawn vehiclesthat pulled, hauled, plowed and fertilized.Residents throughout southern Rensselaer County approachedthe association for help in recovering animals. According to theby-laws, members who had a horse stolen selected six ridersand the president selected six more to ride “not more than 75miles from the village of WSL nor shall he go in such pursuitmore than 5 days. However if a rider found a track of stolenhorse or thief, he could ride at the most 10 days. Selectedriders who went with horse, wagon and harness were paid $3per day by the association and a rider without a horse andwagon was paid $1 per day. If a horse was not recovered, theowner was reimbursed two-thirds of the animal’s cost.~Submitted by, Mary French

AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY EFFORT IS
NEEDED to PREVAIL WITH APCSD BUDGETLetter to the Editor: Dori Salisbury’s diatribe against the APSchool Board and Administration can only be seen has herannouncement of candidacy for the BOE. Fundamentally, Mrs.Salisbury does not understand that the time for ranting isover, or fathoms the scale of the challenges we face. Ourchildren and our community face huge obstacles and an entirecommunity effort is needed to prevail. Mrs. Salisbury bringsnothing constructive to the process, possibly because shehas nothing to offer. Her ideas for reform go from theuneducated to the ridiculous.Mrs. Salisbury has, on numerous occasions, called for changingteacher compensation and benefits. Although many agree, the reality of the situation is that this is almost impossible. Dueto NYSUT’s “ownership” of the state legislature, local schooldistricts, across the state, are almost powerless in negotiatingcontracts, due to state laws and mandates. If our currentcontract with teachers expires with no new agreement, theTriborough Amendment to the Taylor Law prohibits a publicemployer from changing any provision of a collectivelybargained labor agreement until a new agreement is reached. The teachers and the union hold all the cards. Until we haverelief of state laws and mandates, we are facing an uphillbattle. Of course, as some have argued, we should just breakthe contracts. Is it her wish that this community spends its taxdollars fighting law suits rather than educating our children? The most ridiculous thing that Mrs. Salisbury has stated is thatstudents, within 3 miles of their school, must walk to school. Iguess my 5th grader should decide if she wants to walk upBurden Lake Road or Eastern Union Turnpike to 66 to get toMiller Hill/Sand Lake.We need serious people, with well thought out andconstructive solutions to this problem. A problem that, quitefrankly, was forced on us. We need to ensure that our studentsleave AP with a competitive education and opportunities tofollow their dreams and realize their potential. If griping is allyou have, please step out of the way and let someone whoreally cares step in. ~Michael Dimin, Averill ParkEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and forall intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity ofits contents.

WALKING PATH OPEN IN NEW LEBANONA 700-foot long (1/8 mile) walking path is nowavailable on the grounds of ImmaculateConception Church at 732 U.S. Route 20, in NewLebanon. Everyone is welcome to use the pathduring daylight hours and in reasonably goodweather. In addition, there is a connecting naturetrail that provides a lovely walk through the
evergreens adjoining the path. The parish Seniors’ Ministry hasmade this walking path a reality, thanks to the generosity ofbenefactors and with the able assistance of many junior andsenior high school students. A small parking area on the sameside of U.S. Route 20 is planned for this season. The outdoor path is part of a broader program which encouragesseniors to remain active and moving for good health and greaterindependence, especially considering the frequency andseverity of fall-related injuries among older people. Accordingto the CDC, 1 in 3 persons, age 65 and older, will fall in a year, and falls are the leading cause of injury deaths among theelderly. (see http://www.cdc.gov/HomeandRecreationalSafety/Falls/adultfalls.html)In a recent review of 54 previous fall prevention studies, whichincluded more than 26,000 people, three interventions werefound to be effective in decreasing the overall rate of falls. These are interventions that can be carried out through localcommunity resources, namely:• Prescribing vitamin D (Doctors’ offices)• Home safety reviews and modifications• Exercises for strength and improved balanceGiven the importance of improving balance and leg strength, walking is a valuable exercise for all who can safely engage inthe activity.
