OK…So colonialism was a bad

deal for the African nations

1870’s to 1950’sEurope

Ouch!

A three month meeting

completely destroyed Africa for

centuries.

• The Berlin Conference - 1884

Who wants what?

And here’s why…

No representatives

from Africa at the

Conference

Europeans

agreed to divide

up Africa

Page 4: Africa Colonization

• Groups that didn’t get along

or spoke different languages

were now part of the same

“country”

• Land occupied by unified

groups was divided up

among two or three

“countries.”

• Physical barriers divided

“countries” in two

Really Stupid Boundaries

Page 5: Africa Colonization

Europeans Exploited Resources• Raw materials were taken out of the country with little

or no compensations to the Africans

• No factories were built because everything was

shipped to Europe for processing.

• Africa was seen as a market for European

Goods

I’m

going

to be

rich!

Page 6: Africa Colonization

• Nationalism in Europe

• Rivalries among European countries led to

a race to see who could obtain the most

colonies

• “White Man’s Burden”

• Spread Christianity… perhaps even

European Culture

• The “scramble for Africa” saw each

European power trying to establish colonies

in Africa

Page 7: Africa Colonization

Transportation systems

only served the purposes of

the colonial powers

• Railroads ship from

the interior to the

coast and do not

connect with other

“countries.”

Page 8: Africa Colonization

Unequal Treatment of Africans

by the Europeans• Europeans own most of

the resources

• They have prevented

Africans from becoming

educated.

• They have prevented

Africans from voting

and holding office.

Page 9: Africa Colonization

But then,

SOMETHING

HAPPENS

I wonder what

it could be???

Page 10: Africa Colonization

1945 - WWII is over

What is Europe

like now, and

how will it affect

the ability of

colonial powers

to deal with their

holdings in

Africa?

I think

he’s in

over

his head!

Europe

Africa

Page 11: Africa Colonization

What do you think is going to

happen in Africa???????

Page 12: Africa Colonization

INDEPENDENCE

Page 13: Africa Colonization

WOW!

Everything is HUNKY

DORY!

•¡NOT!• How do you think colonialism is

going to impact the way these

“countries” make countries out

of themselves?

Page 14: Africa Colonization

Hey, wait a

minute!!!! Why

don’t they go back

to being they way

they used to be?

Page 15: Africa Colonization

Boundaries

• have gained the legitimacy of time.

Page 16: Africa Colonization

Resources

–over exploited

–owned by foreigners

–no factories to industrialize

and no $$$ to build them

Page 17: Africa Colonization

OOPS! Now what do we do?

• boundaries create BIG problems

• they don’t have any money or much

prospect of making money to fix problems

• railroads don’t make trading with other

countries very easy

• remaining Europeans are the minority but

try to hold on to power in some cases

• Africans are inexperienced at running

complex governments

Page 18: Africa Colonization

What do you think????• How did the colonial

powers view

themselves? Why?

• How did the African

cultures view

themselves prior to

colonialism? How

about now?

• How does this relate

to being in the circle

and being outside of

it?
