AGC EDUCATION AND RESEARCH FOUNDATIONPRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

To the AGC of America Family:

I am pleased to report that 2012 was another exciting and productive year for the Foundation. Included among our accomplishments are:

• Fully launching our Faculty Internship initiative, with two new internships beginning in the summer of 2013. Justin Reginato, CSU

Sacramento, will work with Swinerton, Inc. and Dr. Hisham Said, Santa Clara University, will work with Blach Construction. We are very excited about the potential of this wonderful new endeavor in partnership with the Associated Schools of Construction.

• The Foundation’s first case study, prepared by a team from the University of Northern Kentucky and Turner Construction, is in the final phase of editing and will be ready for publication this spring. The Foundation invited two other teams to prepare case studies in 2013. These case studies will be comprised of “real time” experiences of AGC members and made available for the instruction of advanced level construction management students.

• We are announcing at the 94th AGC convention the award of over 130 scholarships for the 2013-14 academic year. The continuing generosity of our donors makes it possible to help these young people with the high costs of their college educations, even during this time of economic uncertainty. For that we are extremely grateful.

• We present awards this year to the winner of the James L. Allhands Essay Competition, Jacob Kleiman from Marquette University, and the 2013 Outstanding Educator, David Shirah from California State University, Chico. The submissions for these awards just keep getting better, and the winners are indeed deserving of honor.

We thank our donors, old and new, for their support. We make particular mention of Doug Pitcock, a long-time supporter, who this year increased his already generous commitment to the scholarship process and also made a significant contribution to the Faculty Internship Fund. YOUR FOUNDATION continues to promote the cultivation of our future leaders and to recognize outstanding work in the field of their education. That is its mission. The continued and significant financial support by AGC members and firms, the Consulting Constructors Council and AGC of America are the engines behind its continued success. It is heartwarming when one considers the contributions that are made each and every day towards this end.

To use a sports analogy, it is imperative that the leaders in our construction industry continue to react to challenges like champion athletes and their coaches who focus on the immediate issues ahead instead of dwelling on past disappointments or being defeated by current difficulties. In this way we will continue to be winners in spite the obstacles we may face.

Finally, I extend our appreciation to departing directors Craig Capano, Larry Gaskins, Dave Hanson and Bud Madigan who have contributed a great deal to its efforts and whose advice and counsel will be sorely missed.

We are firmly and directly focused on the future of our industry. We know this is of utmost interest to each of AGC’s members. When you see a Foundation board member or one of our donors this week, please thank them for their dedication to this cause. And when you meet one of our scholarship recipients or award winners, ask how we have made a difference for them. Ask how you can get involved!

WIth ouR thAnkSThe AGC Education and Research Foundation Board of Directors welcomed Larry Gaskins and Francis W. (Bud) Madigan, Jr. to emeritus status as their terms ended in 2012. Gaskins, of L.C. Gaskins Construction Company in Jacksonville, Florida, is a past-president of AGC and has been a foundation board member since 2004. Bud Madigan, of F.W. Madigan Company in Worcester, Massachusetts, is the foundation’s longest-serving board member, having joined the board of directors in 1974. We thank them for their dedication and service to the foundation and their unwavering commitment to construction education.

The AGC Foundation Board of Directors congratulates Paul W. Diederich, board member since 1998, former president (2008, 2009) and active emeritus advisor, as he assumes his post as AGC president for 2013. We know that Paul’s passion for education will inform his term. Paul has served four terms on AGC of America’s Executive Board; as Chair of the Highway Division; President of the AGC of North Dakota; Chair of the Highway Bridge Committee; member of the WASHTO Region AASHTO-AGC-ARTBA Joint Committee; Chair of the Education Committee; Chair of the Student Chapter Task Force; and member of the Safety Committee, Corps of Engineers Committee, and Information Technology Committee. He brings outstanding credentials to the office of AGC President.

He recognizes that as our industry rebounds and moves further into the 21st century it will demand superbly educated, nimble and creative managers of the construction process. Dr. rebecca Mirsky, Associate Professor with the Department of Construction Management at Boise State University, is an environmental engineer with over 20 years of experience in the construction industry. Her construction industry experience includes eight years with Bechtel and 10 years with Morrison Knudsen / Washington Group. Her professional interests now involve environmental aspects related to the built environment. Chief among those interests are energy-efficient and ‘green’ construction methods and materials, both in commercial/industrial and residential applications. Other specific interests are “clean construction”; reduction and recycling of construction waste; erosion control and stormwater management; dust and noise control; and sustainable land use planning. Dr. Mirsky is a licensed professional engineer in the

State of Idaho, a LEED accredited professional, and a certified Sustainability Professional by the Institute of Sustainable Infrastructure.

Maria GUy received her Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder and Bachelor’s in Construction Engineering and Management from the University of New Mexico. As Vice President of Corporate Support at JB Henderson Construction Company Inc. (JBHCC), Maria is responsible for the management of critical departments including Project Controls, Marketing, Quality, and Building Information Modeling (BIM) along with performing key executive responsibilities related to overall corporate administration and management, providing leadership and strategic direction for the company. She currently serves on the Civil Engineering Board at the University of New Mexico and the Associated General Contractors-NM Building Branch Board of Directors along with serving as President

of the Governing Council for ACE Leadership High School, the groundbreaking architecture, construction, and engineering charter school began by the AGC-NM Building Branch in 2010. In 2012, Maria was awarded the Skill, Integrity, and Responsibility (SIR) Award from the Associated General Contractors NM Building Branch. Additionally, Maria has been recognized as one of New Mexico’s “Top 40 under 40” and a “Woman of Influence” by Albuquerque Business First, formerly the NM Business Weekly.

stePhen c. VanDerbloeMen has over forty-two years experience in public accounting serving privately held companies and industries which include construction, agribusiness, automotive, hospitality, manufacturing, retail, non-profit and transportation. Upon completing his bachelor’s degree from Concordia College and graduate studies at Marquette University, he started his career at Bersch & Company which merged with Deloitte and Touche and became a partner in 1980. In 1989, he started his own firm, V/H Associates which later became The VanderBloemen Group. Steve has worked his whole career in public accounting serving primarily privately held construction contractors, material suppliers and real estate developers. He has served as Associate Board President of the AGC of Milwaukee, National Director for

Milwaukee and the Wisconsin Chapter. He is an active member and featured speaker of both the AGC National and Wisconsin Chapters and has authored many publications including one of the five authors of the AGC’s Construction Estimating and Bidding Text book, which is currently in its third edition. He has also been an instructor in AGC’s Advanced Management Program since. He and his wife Christine will be celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary this June. They have three children and eight grand children.

MISSIoN STATEMENT

The AGC Education and Research Foundation shall advance and support education in the construction industry and support or contribute to scientific or research projects and programs deemed to be beneficial to the advancement of technological, educational, or vocational expertise in the industry. The AGC Foundation will achieve this by:

• awarDinG scholarshiPs to qualified undergraduate and/or graduate students enrolled at ABET or ACCE accredited schools and colleges in the field of construction or construction-related engineering who demonstrate an interest in pursuing careers in the construction industry and meet the Foundation’s academic and extra-curricular criteria for such scholarships.

• ProViDinG Financial assistance to support teaching faculty in the field of construction or construction-related engineering at ABET or ACCE accredited schools and colleges.

• awarDinG FUnDinG for scientific research projects or other programs deemed by the Foundation to be beneficial to the advancement of educational, technological, or vocational expertise in the construction industry with awards based in part upon recommendations of ABET or ACCE accredited schools and colleges or other groups with special knowledge in construction or construction-related engineering.

DaViD shirah | 2013 oUtstanDinG eDUcatorDavid is a California State University, Chico alumni and 1985 Construction Management graduate. He is a licensed general contractor and Professional Agent Construction Manager. David is serving in his sixth year as full-time faculty for Chico State’s Construction Management Department and has taught and developed curriculum for nine different construction management courses since joining the faculty in 2007. Prior to making the transition from the industry to academia, he spent 24 years in the construction industry as a principal of his own

general contracting and CM company. In addition to his classroom responsibilities, he serves on the University’s Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching Advisory Board, as community service faculty co-advisor, faculty advisor for the AGC student chapter and Chico State’s Design-Build Institute of America and Construction Management Association of America student chapters. He is still active as a general contractor and CM and has served on many community boards and councils. Most recently, David was recognized by Chico for his work as the faculty advisor for Chico State’s AGC student chapter by receiving the university’s Outstanding Student Organization Advisor Award in 2010-2011 and was recognized for his dedication to students outside the classroom receiving the university’s Pearls of Wisdom Award in 2010 from the university’s Associated Students.

Jacob kleiMan | First Place winner2013 JaMes l. allhanDs essay coMPetition Jacob Kleiman, a 5th year senior at Marquette University’s Construction Engineering and Management Program, was the first place winner in the 2013 James L. Allhands Essay Competition for his outstanding essay on the topic, “Placing the Ethical Cornerstone.” He said he is “delighted and humbled” to have been named as the first place winner of the Allhands competition. Jacob and his faculty sponsor, Mark O. Federle, were honored by the AGC

Education and Research Foundation at the 2013 AGC Convention. Jacob’s career goals are to use his talents and passion to continually learn the trades and daily operations of the construction industry, one day becoming a project superintendent. As a youngster who loved watching Michael Jordan, Jacob reflected on a few of his inspiring words. “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” Jacob’s life goal is to make it happen.

Mark o. FeDerle | allhanDs essay FacUlty sPonsor2013 JaMes l. allhanDs essay coMPetition Mark Federle is currently the McShane Chair in Construction Engineering and Management at Marquette University. He has responsibility of starting what will hopefully become the 13th ABET - Accredited Construction Engineering program in the country. Previously he was Chief Information Officer for The Weitz Company in Des Moines. Prior to that, Federle was the Professor-in-Charge of Construction Engineering program at Iowa State University. Mark’s

career began in the construction industry as a foreman, superintendent, and project manager for general contractors in Indiana and Michigan. He earned his PhD and Masters in Construction Engineering and Management from the University of Michigan. Mark is a licensed Professional Engineer and a Certified Professional Constructor. Mark was awarded The Career Achievement Award by Rose-Hulman in 2005. He was recognized by AGC of America as Instructor of the Year in 2011. He is a Fellow of ASCE.

klinger outstanding senior awardIn memory of William A. Klinger, the first president of the AGC Foundation and one of the organizers of Iowa State University’s Construction Engineering curriculum, the ISU Construction Engineering faculty

selects a graduating senior, who is recognized by the AGC Education and Research Foundation with a cash prize and plaque for significant achievement in his or her undergraduate academic career.

kathryn kern During her junior and senior years in construction engineering, Kathryn served as a cabinet member and as an active member of the AGC Student Chapter at Iowa State University. Due to her leadership as a cabinet member she created a new marketing plan for the AGC Student Chapter for high school outreach. Kathryn was also involved with teaching assistantships for undergraduate classes. Kathryn also participated in the annual AGC Student Chapter spring break trips to perform community service projects in eastern Iowa and Joplin, Missouri. Upon

graduation in May 2012, Kathryn began her construction career with Burns & McDonnell of Kansas City, Missouri.

Faculty Internship and Case Study initiatives were developed to respond to needs identified by our AGC colleagues and partners at the associated schools of construction (asc) and american council for Construction Education (ACCE). The programs have been developed and launched at a rapid pace by a task force of AGC Foundation Board and ASC members. Through generous donations from Scott Williams of hamilton construction and Doug Pitcock of williams brothers construction, as well as donations from Foundation board members Bob Bowen, Harry Mashburn and Pete Wert, the foundation has been able to fund three faculty internships during the pilot phase of the program.

Je DUnn anD PePPer host FacUlty internsLisa Holliday from the University of Oklahoma partnering with JE Dunn Construction Company and Jessica Anderson, Purdue University, working with the Pepper Construction Company were awarded faculty internships from the foundation for the summer of 2012.

Holliday, an assistant professor in the Haskell and Irene Lemon Department of Construction, has been teaching the structures sequence course in the construction science program since the fall of 2010. She holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Oklahoma. JE Dunn Construction Company selected Bobby Snyder and Malcolm Coetzee to be her industry

mentors. She worked side by side with JE Dunn’s Project Manager, Project Engineers and BIM experts in the office and on the construction site. Her goals for the internship included gaining experience with BIM in construction and more specifically the Autodesk program, Revit Structure.

Anderson has been teaching in the Building Construction Management Department at Purdue University for six years. She was awarded her PhD from Purdue and is now working as an Associate Professor. Pepper Construction Company teamed her up with industry mentors Dave Pepper, Bill McCarthy and Bob Eckl working on site at the Fashion Mall.

northern kentUcky wins case stUDy contractThe Case Study Project issued its first RFP in April 2012 for case

studies on ethical situations in construction project management or cost estimating. Thirteen proposals were submitted from applicants who teamed with AGC member contractors. The winning proposal was submitted by Dr. Ihab Saad of Northern Kentucky University and a team from Turner Construction Company that includes: Doug Bennett, Project Executive; Ted Boeckerman, Project Executive; and Mark Terhar, Vice President and Operations Manager. The final case study will be published in 2013. Two additional case studies on other aspects of ethics in project management and cost estimating are in process, by teams from the University of Arkansas (with Baldwin and Shell Construction Company) and the University of Washington (with Sellen Construction Company).

The AGC Education and Research Foundation Board of Directors is proud that Board Treasurer Robert L. Bowen, P.E., Founder and Chairman of Bowen Engineering Corporation, was honored in March, 2012 by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for his lifetime achievement in construction. Bob joins an elite group of construction recipients such as Charles J. Pankow, Charles Pankow Builders Ltd. and Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr., Bechtel Construction in receiving this honor. A graduate of Purdue University, where he received his civil engineering degree, Bob has received honorary doctorates from Purdue University and the University of Evansville. After

graduating from Purdue, he was hired as a project manager at the W.M. Lyles Company in Fresno, CA, where he stayed for five years before returning home to Indianapolis to found the Bowen Engineering Corporation. Bob has also served as president of the Associated General Contractors of Indiana. Together with his wife, Terry, he helped Purdue University raise the funds necessary to build the 50,000 sq. ft. Bowen Laboratory for Large-Scale Civil Engineering Research. In 1997, Bob and his wife started the Bowen Foundation which has awarded more than $750,000 in college scholarships for minority students. The Bowens endow a scholarship for minority students with the AGC Education and Research Foundation. He has been a driving force behind the Foundation’s initiatives on faculty internships and case studies.
