For formation, cafi Chris Thwaite at 647 S522 NEW YORK - Kentucky Derby winner Strike the Gold will be an outsider in the Bel- mont Stakes — not in the odds, but in the gate. Strike the Gold, the early 5-2 favorite, drew the outside post Thursday when 11 3-year-olds were entered for thefinjrirace of the Triple Crown. Praakneaa winner Hansel waa the second choice at 3-1 and will start from the No. 5 post. Adding a touch of mystery to Saturdays 123rd running of the Belmont will be the appearance of Smooth Performance, who ar- rived in New York on Wednes- day from Ireland. The Ken- tucky-bred son of Seattle Slew has nine starts — all on grass — and three victories. The oddsmaker made the Dermot Weld-trained Smooth Performance the third choice at 6-1, probably based on Weld's last Belmont horse - 1990 Bel- mont winner Go and Go. Michael Kinane, who rode Go and Go, will be aboard Smooth performance. Adding a touch of history is Julie Krone, who will become the first female jockey in the Bel- mont. She will ride Subordinated Debt. Strike the Gold, ridden by Chris Antley, was pinned on the rail after starting from the No. 3 hole in the Preakness, where he finished sixth, but trainer Nick Zito was unhappy about drawing the outside post. There is less than a quarter mile to establish position before the field hits the first turn. "Simple instruction. Take him back to last/ " Zito said. "We've got to save ground. Now maybe we'll see what a special horse he is." Trainer Frank Brothers agonized over the decision to send Hansel to the Preakness after the colt finished 10th as the favorite in the Derby. Rid- den by Jerry Bailey, Hansel won the Preakness by seven lengths. Brothers apparently had no trouble in deckling to aend his colt to the Belmont even though New York bans medication. Hansel, who suffered pulmonary bleeding during a race in February, has raced on a diuretic, Lasix, in his last five starts. "We've covered all our baaea, and that's all I have to aay about it," Brothers said. Strike the Gold has never rac- ed on Lasix. The 11-horse field is the larg- est since the same number started in the 1984 race won by Swale. Said Brothers: M It makes it more intereating. Nobody's afraid of anybody." As to how the lVj-mile Bel- mont will be run. Brothers saidT "All things being the same and if our horse is on his game, hell be up close. I think Wayne's horse will be up there and I think with a big field well see a quicker pace." Zito thinks trainer D. Wayne Lukas might try to steal the race with Corporate Report, who was ninth in the Derby and sec- ond in the Preakness under jockey Pat Day. "He'll open up five or six lengths and then try to control the pace," Zito said. "Mane Minister has medium speed and Scan will show some speed." Mane Minister, who raced on Lasix in his last four starts, finished third in both the Derby and Preakness. Ridden by Alex Solis, he will start from the No. 3 post just outside Scan, who will be ridden by Chris McCar- ron. Scan will be making bis debut in Triple Crown competition. He has yet to win in five starts, finishing third in the Peter Pan in his last race on May 26 at Belmont. Also racing in a Triple Crown event for the first time will be Subordinated Debut, who wor the Withers on May 8 and was second in the Jersey Derby 19 days later. Tarkanian 'feels good/ to reveal decision today By TIM DAHLSERG AP Sports Writer LAS VEGAS - UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarka- nian emerged from a meeting with the school's president on Thursday saying he had made a decision about his future but would wait until Friday to an- nounce it. Tarkanian and UNLV presi- tlt?nt nWcri JWIOABUU UWIHVU - themselves in "total agreement" on the decision, which will be announced in a press conference Friday morning. "I'm really happy," Tarkanian said. "I'm really pleased with what is going on." The Associated Press reported earlier this week that Tarkanian and Maxson had agreed to a deal under which the embattled coach would coach one more season before leaving the uni- versity. Tarkanian and Maxson declin- ed Thursday to say what deci- sion had been made, and Tarka- nian said he had told only his wife and son about his inten- tions. "It feels good. I've been feel- ing good the last three nights," Tarkanian said. "Up until a few days ago. it was pretty difficult. I was getting pulled on one side and I had thoughts on another. I just got back to what I felt I wanted to do." Tarkanian had earlier express- ed a desire to coach next year's team because it will have five new starters and he wanted the challenge of molding a young team together. His latest team went through the regular season undefeated and made the Final Four before losing to Duke, while the 1989-90 team won the national championship. Tarkanian. who built UNLV Into a national basketball power in his 18 years, had also ex- pressed a determination to de- fend his program against the latest round of charges involving alleged NCAA rules infractions. The charges, some of which revolve around the recruitment of former New York City prep star Lloyd Daniels, are expected to be resolved sometime in late summer or fall before the NCAA's Committee on Infrac- tions. David Bern, head of the NCAA's enforcement division, said any Tarkanian-UNLV ar- rangement "would have no bear- ing on how the infractions case is handled by the NCAA." He said the NCAA wasn't contacted by UNLV. "We have had absolutely nothing to do with discussions or actions oc- curring in Las Vegaa. We have been advised that meetings have taken place but not of the details." Wichita State reaches final OMAHA. Neb. NEW YORK - Kentucky Derby winner Strike the Gold will be an outsider in the Belmont Stakes — not in the odds, but in the gate.

Strike the Gold, the early 5-2 favorite, drew the outside post Thursday when 11 3-year-olds were entered for the finjri race of the Triple Crown. Praakneaa winner Hansel waa the second choice at 3-1 and will start from the No. 5 post.

Adding a touch of mystery to Saturdays 123rd running of the Belmont will be the appearance of Smooth Performance, who arrived in New York on Wednesday from Ireland. The Kentucky-bred son of Seattle Slew has nine starts — all on grass — and three victories.

The oddsmaker made the Dermot Weld-trained Smooth Performance the third choice at 6-1, probably based on Weld's last Belmont horse - 1990 Belmont winner Go and Go. Michael Kinane, who rode Go and Go, will be aboard Smooth performance.

Adding a touch of history is Julie Krone, who will become the first female jockey in the Belmont.

Now maybe we'll see what a special horse he is."

Trainer Frank Brothers agonized over the decision to send Hansel to the Preakness after the colt finished 10th as the favorite in the Derby. Ridden by Jerry Bailey, Hansel won the Preakness by seven lengths.

Brothers apparently had no trouble in deckling to aend his colt to the Belmont even though New York bans medication.

H a n s e l , w h o s u f f e r e d pulmonary bleeding during a race in February, has raced on a diuretic, Lasix, in his last five starts.

"We've covered all our baaea, and that's all I have to aay about it," Brothers said.

Strike the Gold has never raced on Lasix.

The 11-horse field is the largest since the same number started in the 1984 race won by Swale.

Said Brothers: MIt makes it more intereating. Nobody's afraid of anybody."

As to how the lVj-mile Belmont will be run. Brothers saidT "All things being the same and if our horse is on his game, hell be up close. I think Wayne's horse will be up there and I think with a big field well see a quicker pace."

Zito thinks trainer D. Wayne Lukas might try to steal the race with Corporate Report, who was ninth in the Derby and second in the Preakness under jockey Pat Day.

"He'll open up five or six lengths and then try to control the pace," Zito said. "Mane Minister has medium speed and Scan will show some speed."

Mane Minister, who raced on Lasix in his last four starts, finished third in both the Derby and Preakness. Ridden by Alex Solis, he will start from the No. 3 post just outside Scan, who will be ridden by Chris McCar-ron.

Tarkanian 'feels good/ to reveal decision today

By T I M DAHLSERG AP Sports Writer

L A S V E G A S - UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian emerged from a meeting with the school's president on Thursday saying he had made a decision about his future but would wait until Friday to announce it.

Tarkanian and UNLV presi-tlt?nt n W c r i JWIOABUU U W I H V U -

themselves in "total agreement" on the decision, which will be announced in a press conference Friday morning.

"I'm really happy," Tarkanian said. "I'm really pleased with what is going on."

The Associated Press reported earlier this week that Tarkanian and Maxson had agreed to a deal under which the embattled coach would coach one more season before leaving the university.

Tarkanian and Maxson declined Thursday to say what decision had been made, and Tarkanian said he had told only his wife and son about his intentions.

"It feels good. I've been feeling good the last three nights," Tarkanian said. "Up until a few days ago. it was pretty difficult. I was getting pulled on one side and I had thoughts on another. I just got back to what I felt I wanted to do."

Tarkanian had earlier expressed a desire to coach next year's team because it will have five new starters and he wanted the challenge of molding a young team together. His latest team went through the regular season undefeated and made the Final Four before losing to Duke, while the 1989-90 team won the national championship.

Tarkanian. who built UNLV Into a national basketball power in his 18 years, had also expressed a determination to defend his program against the latest round of charges involving alleged NCAA rules infractions. The charges, some of which revolve around the recruitment of former New York City prep star Lloyd Daniels, are expected to be resolved sometime in late summer or fall before the NCAA's Committee on Infractions.

David Bern, head of the NCAA's enforcement division, said any Tarkanian-UNLV arrangement "would have no bearing on how the infractions case is handled by the NCAA."

He said the NCAA wasn't contacted by UNLV. "We have had absolutely nothing to do with discussions or actions occurring in Las Vegaa. We have been advised that meetings have taken place but not of the details."
