Keep yourself safe at home 5 golden rules of fire safety
Working smoking alarms save lives!
Prevent fires—make your home safe
Be prepared—have an escape plan and when you’re
at home keep keys in deadlocks.
Get out, stay out!
Call 111
Only working smoke alarms save lives
A minimum of one smoke alarm in the house, outside the bedrooms in the hallway.
Ideally one in every bedroom, living area and hallway—not in the kitchen, bathroom,
laundry or garage.
Which smoke alarm to get
The Fire Service recommends long-life photoelectric smoke alarms—available at most
hardware stores.
Hard-wired smoke alarms are ideal as you’ll never have to replace a battery. You will,
however, need a qualified electrician.
There are special smoke alarms for people who are hearing impaired. Your local Deaf
Association should have all the details.
Test your smoke alarms
Check your smoke alarm is working by pressing the “test” button. If all is OK you will
hear a loud beep or series of beeps.
Replace batteries once a year (timed around Daylight Saving) - 9 volt batteries. A long-
life smoke alarm will remove the need to do this for up to 10 years.
Keep your alarms clean — free of dust and spider webs.
FACT— if the worst should happen, you will have 1—2 minutes from the sounding of a
smoke alarm to when your life is seriously threatened by fire or smoke.

Our Mission: Age Concern promotes wellbeing, rights, respect and dignity for older people.
Our Vision: An inclusive society where older people are connected, supported, empowered, celebrated and respected—Age
Concern is the lead organization making this happen.
Jack and Jim – a story
Jack has been visiting Jim about 6 weeks now. Jim sat on our waiting list for 12 months because it was diffi-cult to find him just the right visitor. Jim presented as a “young at heart” older person. He didn’t marry or have children and struggled with his work life due to prejudices from a society. He has no family living close by. On Meeting Jim, I warmed to the fact that he was very knowledgeable about the area and was a keen tramper from way back. When I asked what he would most like to do he said “go and walk some of the old tracks again” He is now in his early 70’s but fit enough and no significant health problems as such. I felt that I needed to find a man who would be willing to help achieve his goal.
We have very few men apply to be volunteers, but a couple of months ago Jack, who had recently retired applied. When he was at training, I just wondered if he may be the man for the job. I introduced them to one another the next week and, like me, Jack could see Jim’s potential and accepted him at face value straight away. They got on “like a house on fire in ” Jack’s words.
The following week Jim was waiting at the door with all his old tramping maps out and showed Jack the areas he had covered in the past. Jack discussed Jim’s ideas with me and decided to take it slowly at first; they did small local walks and then planned their first outing to McLaren Falls Park. Jim was delighted.
Over the Easter break, when the bad weather hit Tauranga, Jim called Jack in a state of anxiety as his washing line had been bent over and he was worried about it falling on his head. Jack went around the next day and took a look. They dismantled the washing line together and Jack took the washing line pole to an engineering friend and got it fixed and then they reassembled it together. Jim was whistling happily as they worked. He was obviously enjoying working alongside another man again.
As soon as Jack was finished, Jim said “I have another job for you!” Jack laughed, as I had warned him not to get too involved as a list as long as his arm might appear. It was a branch that had come down in the
storm, Jack sawed in off and they chopped it up to put in the refuse bin. Again Jim whistled as they worked.
They are both delighted with the match and it is mak-ing a difference to both their lives. I doubt that Jim has often been treated with such interest in the past, and Jack has the pleasure of knowing he is really making a difference in someone’s life.
It is clear, in this case, that it is far more than over-coming loneliness and isolation for Jim, who is used to his own company after so many years alone; it is an opportunity to increase the quality of his life and increase his enjoyment of others. Surely he has so much more to look forward to than he did before. Jack found out it was Jim’s birthday recently and he sent him a card in the post.
Visiting an older isolated and lonely person in our community can be a very rewarding use of leisure time. If you read this story with interest and are keen to find out more about being involved call Andrea on 07 578 2541 to receive a volunteer information pack.

BLOKES DAY OUT
Hi, Red here.
Z Blokes Day Out ventured up to the Coromandel in
July
My weather streak continues and we were treated to a wonderful day.
First we visited the wonderful people at Z Bethlehem for coffee and muffins before our trip north.
Our party included 2 Newbies amongst the 3 Johns, 2 Rons, a Fred and a Red. We went up North to visit the Driving Creek Railway (DCR) just out of Coromandel Town.
The drive alone up the western coast of the Coromandel peninsular was worth the trip.
As is the Blokes way we stopped for lunch. We chose the Star and Garter in the township and were served up a wonderful meal.
The DCR is a testament to Kiwi ingenuity. The creator, Barry Brickell started with a dream and built a wonder-ful place. The railway has tunnels, viaducts, zig-zag traverses and climbs the mountain at a surprising gradi-ent to get to the “Eye Full Tower”. The view was breath-takingly brilliant and the blokes recommend everyone goes up there one day.
Then back we came via the best takeaway shop in the Valley. “Good Kiwi Kai” in Pollen Street, Thames treated the blokes to a lovely meal of fish and chips.
Our next trip will be on Thursday 21st August and we stay local. We will fuel up with muffins & coffee at Z Te Puke then we will go on a guided tour through Comvita in Paengaroa. I’ll seek out an unexpected venue for lunch.
I’ll never stop saying what a bunch of legends the team at Z Energy team are. Thank you Dave and Lynette for your continuing support and sponsorship.

Family History Month at Tauranga City Libraries
August is Family History Month and there are some special events for genealogists in Tauranga Library. Whether you are experienced or a beginner, you’ll find something to suit you. On Friday 1 August from 10 am to 12 noon you can take a guided tour of the Library’s genealogy resources, including some of the online resources which are so important in research now. Beginners are catered for in a two-hour class on the following Friday, 8 August. For the more experienced researcher, our very popular ‘lock-in’ takes place on Thursday 14 August. After the library closes at 5:30, researchers come in and work to their hearts’ content until just after 9 pm, taking in supper and talks by genealogical experts in the course of the evening. It costs $12 and you bring a plate of finger food to share. This year, as it is the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I, the expert talks will concentrate on war records. Bookings are essential for all of these events, so ring 577 7085 to reserve your place.
Have you hit a brick wall with New Zealand research? Help is at hand in our Friday afternoon drop-in sessions. Bring your Kiwi family history queries to Research Collections between 1:30 and 4 pm every Friday in August and expert genealogists will be there to assist. For these sessions you don’t need to book.
Of course, finding out about your family history doesn’t need to be confined to Family History Month. Research Collections staff are ready to help with your queries at any time the library is open. Come up to the first floor of Tauranga Library and turn right, or call us at the desk on 577 7174.
