Celebrating Seasons of Ministry Shared On December 31, Rev. H. Carson Rhyne, Jr. will retire from active ministry
in the PC(USA) and as general presbyter/stated clerk of the Presbytery of the
James. He has been a great friend in ministry to this congregation, having
begun his work here as an Associate Pastor nearly 40 years ago. He helped
to begin both the former Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church (now Hope
Presbyterian) and Summit Presbyterian Church in Stafford where he served as
pastor before answering a call to lead our Presbytery.
Through the years Carson has been a faithful colleague in ministry with staff
members, Elders and Deacons of our church as well as a friend of many
members. He was a featured workshop leader for youth ministry events for
several years and has been an excellent reference and resource to numerous
search committees from our congregation. His passion for the Gospel and the
Church have inspired many.
We hope you will want to joining celebrating his ministry. On Saturday,
October 20, at Lord Jesus Korean Presbyterian Church in Richmond there will
be a celebration of his ministry. Watch for more details to come.
You can participate by 3 other means:
Contribute to the Rhyne Polity Education Fund. Mail gifts marked for the
Rhyne Fund to Union Presbyterian Seminary, 3401 Brook Road, Rich-
mond, VA 23227.
Send a note to Carson — A note or card may be sent with your well
wishes to be presented to Carson at the celebration. Address cards to
Pat Valentine, 101 Mountain View Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22903.
Email a photo or special remembrance to be included in a video presenta-
tion. Photos and thoughts can be emailed to Kelley Hope in the POJ of-
fice at [email protected].
Rejoice with those who rejoice!
Thanks be to God for the ministry of a faithful and dedicated Minster of
Word and Sacrament.
Well done, Carson!

What is a Presbyterian Woman? By Kim Bowers, PW Moderator, St. Mark Church, Ballwin, MO
God borrows from many creatures to make a Presbyterian Woman.
God takes the voice of a meadowlark,
the stubbornness of a mule, the curiosity of a cat, the spryness of a grasshopper
and the strength of a pack horse to create a Presbyterian Woman.
A Presbyterian Woman can be found anywhere. She can be found in the church.
She is often in the church office and on Sundays, she will be found in the Sunday School program.
She is also found in board rooms, behind cash registers and at PTA functions.
She quilts, bakes, knits and volunteers at the hospital. She even bowls and jogs.
A Presbyterian Woman is Comfort with a casserole in her hand. She is Service, cleaning up after a church dinner.
She is Compassion with a pledge card in her purse. She is Friendship with a cheerful smile on her face.
She is Hungry-for-knowledge, armed with a Bible and a study book.
Church Sessions include Presbyterian Women. Church secretaries ‘slave’ for them.
Husbands despair for them and Heaven protects them.
A Presbyterian Woman is a dreamer and a worker – dreaming great dreams for her children,
her church, and her country, and she is working to make those come true.
She is a link with the past, a powerful force in the present and an investment in the future.
Fall Gathering of PW of the Presbytery of the James
Our Church will host the Fall
Gathering of Presbyterian Women
of the Presbytery of the James on
Saturday, November 3. All women
are welcome to attend. Registration
and coffee begin at 8:30 a.m. The
Meeting starts at 9:30 a.m. and
ends at noon. Barry & Peg Jones
of our congregation will share
slides from their mission trips to
Honduras.
Growing in faith as part of a faith
community is integral to the life of PW
and the PC (U.S.A.). In addition to
Presbyterian worship and participation
in PW, many Presbyterian Women
groups and individuals nurture their
faith ecumenically through Fellowship
of the Least Coin (FLC). FLC is a
global, ecumenical prayer movement
that was begun in 1956 by Shanti
Solomon of India, who believed that
women anywhere could have a sense
of being part of a worldwide family of
faith.
Her vision—now a reality—is that
this connectedness would arise from
women praying for peace and
reconciliation and setting aside the
smallest denomination coin of their
country as a symbol of that prayer. As
coins are gathered from around the
world, they become a sign of our one-
ness in a common quest for peace,
justice and reconciliation. FLC’s
international committee awards grants
from these “least coins,” funding
special projects of evangelism, service,
ecumenical solidarity, awareness-
building among women, and relief
throughout the world. Presbyterian
Women are encouraged to participate
in the Fellowship of the Least Coin.

Come and See What God Is Doing: The Grace of Giving Stewardship Season has begun, and information is coming your way about
participating in God’s work at The Presbyterian Church!
Starting soon, our Moments for Mission during worship will feature member
presentations about how our church has given opportunities and comfort through
your giving. Our church website and Facebook page will display ways that the
work of our congregation continues to profess the glory of God. Letters and
brochures will explain how your gifts will help continue good things in the years
to come.
This year we have two opportunities to facilitate the work of our church:
1) a three-year pledge to our Building Fund for 2019, 2020, and 2021, and
2) a one-year pledge to our Operating Fund for 2019.
Dedication Sunday for these pledges is October 28. Until then, listen and see
what God is doing through your joyful gifts. Continue to study Paul’s instruc-
tions to the early church: “But since you excel in everything— in faith, in speech,
in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—
see that you also excel in this grace of giving,” (2 Cor. 8:7, NIV).
Community Dinners The next Community Dinner,
hosted and served by our church, is
Saturday, October 20th. Contact
Karen Johnson (540) 621-5685,
([email protected]), if you
would like to help.
Looking ahead! The November
issue of the Lamp will contain
information about the “Big Pie
Give-Away” at the dinner on
November 17, and the “Christmas
Cookie Give-Away” at the dinner
on December 15.

Dessert With Josh Heikkila Members and guests are invited to come meet Josh
Heikkila, our missionary in West Africa. Join us for
dessert and a time of sharing in the Middle House on
Wednesday, October 7. We’ll begin with dessert at
7:00 p.m. followed by a time with Josh sharing about his
work in Ghana and neighboring countries. Our
congregation has supported Josh for several years and this
will be his second visit with us.
Josh is the regional liaison for the PCUSA in West
Africa. He facilitates partner relationships, implements
regional strategies, and supports the work of other mission
personnel. “When we strive to live together as brothers
and sisters in Jesus Christ, our faith is deepened and
strengthened, despite our cultural differences, and we
become better disciples of Jesus Christ,” Josh says. He
works with partner churches in Ghana, Niger, Nigeria, and
Togo. His home presbytery is Twin Cities.
All are welcome to meet Josh and enjoy this sharing
time together.
Partnering with Haiti Many of you are aware of our missionary in Haiti, Cindy
Corell, whom we, along with other churches in the
Presbytery of the James, help support. Our Mission
Committee and Session have decided to establish a closer
relationship with a specific community/region of Haiti.
After visits to Haiti by Bill Nix and Barry Jones, and
conversations with Cindy, we believe the ODEPOL region
located southwest of Port-au-Prince welcomes this
relationship. The region has a diverse geography and has
already started work on its own recovery from Hurricane
Matthew. Cindy has good contacts with some of the
Haitians who live there.
As we understand it, our first priority is to provide a good
water source and seeds for the farmers. Building cisterns,
seed banks, silos, and storage buildings would help the
situation. The plan is not for us to send money and/or a
team to do all the work. We want to build a relationship
with the people and work with them on the projects. In the
years to come as the relationship grows, we might move
into other areas of cooperation that would include Bible
school/studies, medical assistance, cooking, etc.
The first trip, February 19-16, four members from our
church will join four others from the Presbytery of the
James. This group will
spend time travelling to
different parts of Haiti with
Cindy Corell. The group or
at least members from our
church will spend some time
talking and beginning to
build a relationship with people from ODEPOL. They will
also learn about the work that will be done by our second
group that will come in April. Pastor Tamminga, Bill Nix,
and Joan Gaston intend to go on this trip, so we invite one
more to join them. The second trip, April 2-9, will be a
work project with a team from our church and Haitians
from ODEPOL. The plan is to build a cistern, silos, seed
banks, and a building to house the seed banks and silos.
We would like to have eight or so to go. Members will pay
for some of the costs with other costs being offset by funds
from the church budget, the Peace & Global Witness
Offering, and a possible mission dinner. If you are
interested in finding out more info, please talk with Bill
Nix, Barry Jones, and/or Bruce Harvey. We would like to
have the February people by the end of October and the
April team by end of November or the middle part of
December.
Peace Offering The Peace and Global Mission Of-
fering will be observed on Sunday,
October 7 at both services. This of-
fering is the last of the four PCUSA
special offerings with the others be-
ing: the Christmas Joy Offering, the
One Great Hour of Sharing, and the
Pentecost Offering. The 25% of the
Peace & Global Witness offering will
go to help with the costs of sending
members of our church to Haiti,
February 19-26 and April 2-9. For
more details about the Haiti trips,
please read the article on Haiti below.
The balance of the offering will go to
support peacemaking efforts at other
levels of the PCUSA. Please give
your prayerful support to this
offering.

Camp Hanover for this weekend retreat that will touch on themes of social justice. The Cost is $100. There will be

Elders
Dear “Church,”
How wonderful you all have been to me since my
tragic accident!
The phone calls, the visits, the gifts and your
loving ways by “churching on me” are so very much
appreciated. I do think the Lord has me in mind as
I’m starting to feel better every day.
I love the quilt you sent me and I will cherish it
forever.
Love in Christ,
Lou Silvey
