Help Keep Families Together by Supporting Renewal House This SpringSince 1996, RenewalHouse has filled a need in theNashville

community by serving addicted mothers along with their

children in a comprehensive, long-term residential program.

Withastrongtherapeuticfocusandindividualizedprogramsfor

mothersandchildren,RenewalHouseaddressestherootcauses

of addiction while helping families heal together and plan for

the future. While in residence,mothers areprovidedwith an

arrayof services suchascasemanagement,parentingclasses,

grouptherapy,lifeskillstrainingandjobreadinesstraining.We

areproudtoreportthatduringcalendaryear2007,10mothers

graduatedfromtheprogramwiththeknowledge,skillsandself-

awarenesstobesuccessfulandindependent. Thesegraduates

nowmoveontotheaftercareprogramwhereaCaseManager

workswiththemforuptosixmonthstoensuretheirstabilityin

sobriety,employmentandpermanenthousing.

Renewal House is able to provide these valuable services because

of thegenerosity of donors. Whena donor gives toRenewal

House, theyprovide a familywith theopportunity for a fresh

start;achancetostartoverandmakebetterchoices.

done to help mothers and children recover from the effects of

A Women’s ThanksgivingThe 2007 AWomen’s Thanksgiving was a great successraising over $70,000 for our agency programs. WewerethrilledtohaveMayDeanEberlingandLizaLentzservingasHonoraryCo-Chairsfortheevent.Thisyear’sstorytellerwas country music recording artist Kathy Mattea whomovedthecrowdwithhersongsofstrength,resilienceandrecovery.RenewalHousegraduatesBetsyC.andLaDonnaJ.alsosharedtheirstoriesofhopeandhealing.Thisyear’ssilent auction included hand painted ceramic vases painted by Renewal House clients and friends.

ColleenandTedWelchgraciouslyhostedthePatronPartyattheirhomeinlateOctober.Theeveningfeatureddeliciousfoodaswellasasilentauctionincludingvacationgetaways,beautifuljewelry,originalartworkandmanyothergenerousdonations from community retailers.

President’s ReportHappyNewYeartoAll!WiththetickoftheclockatmidnightonJanuary1,2008,IsteppedintotheroleofPresidentoftheRenewalHouseBoardofDirectors.IhaveservedontheBoardsinceJanuary1,2005,andIamproudtobeleadingsuchanimportantandoutstandingorganization.

In2008wewelcomeeightnewboardmembers,highlightedelsewhereinthisnewsletter.TheseindividualswilladdvaluableperspectiveandexpertisetoouralreadytalentedandcommittedBoardofDirectors.Asalways,wearefortunatetohavediverserepresentationintheareasof:professionalaffiliation,technicalskillsets,communityconnections,recoveryknowledge,age,raceandgender.ThisleadershipteamwillcontinuetoprovidesoundgovernanceanddirectiontokeepRenewalHouseattheforefrontofquality

services to women with addiction and their children.

ThespringseasonhasspecialrelevancetothemissionofRenewalHousewithitsthemesofrebirth,growth,andopportunity.Thisspringinparticularisblossomingwithactivityonourcampus.Ourplaygroundisbeingtransformedfromafunctionalsitewithbasicswingsetstoamulti-faceted“communitybackyard”withdeckandseatingspace,achalk/muralwall,acourt/gamesarea,aplayfortandwalkingtrail.

Ourinsidecommunityspaceisalsounderconstructionwithcreationofafamilycomputerlab/learningcenter.Throughthisrenovation,ourvitalfamilyspacesofchildcare,communityroom,andlearningcenterwillallbeconnected.Thenewlearningcenterwilloffercomputerstationsforbothmomsandchildrensothatourclientswillnotbeleftbehindasschoolandemploymentexperiencesareincreasinglytiedtotechnology.

Ouraffordable,BBuilding,rentalapartmentunitswillalsobeupgradedinthecomingyear.Wornflooring,kitchenandbathroomcabinetsandfixtureswillbereplaced.Wealsohopetoimproveenergyefficiencyfortheseunits.

Whew!ActivitiesatRenewalHouseareexciting,asalways.Wearesogratefultothemany,manyfriendsanddonorswhomakeitpossibleforustoprovidequalityservicestosomeofourcommunity’smostdesperateandvulnerablecitizens.Inthecomingyear,theBoardwillcontinueitsdiligenteffortstoguideandsupportthiscritical mission.

Residential ProgramRenewalHouse’slong-termfamilyresidentialprogram addresses the interconnected challenges of addiction, poverty, parentingand vocational development. Mothers andtheir children live together at Renewal House forsixtofifteenmonthswhiletheyhealfromtheeffectsofchemicaladdiction.Theprogramis highly structured and provides intensive therapy,educationandtrainingformothers.FromthetimeshearrivesatRenewalHouse,a mother is learning the coping and life skills she will need to maintain her sobriety and be self-sufficient after graduation from theprogram. Affordable HousingRenewalHousehasaffordable two-bedroomapartments that offer clean and sober living in arecoveryenvironment.Manyofourresidentstransition to this on campus housing after graduation from the residential program. For moreinformation,pleasecall255-5222x111.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)TheRenewalHouse IOPbeganfouryearsagotofillanunmetneed inNashville forgender-specific,outpatientalcoholanddrugtreatment.Designed to be a community program, theRenewal House IOP is open to any womanstruggling with alcohol and drug addiction. The program operates from 10am-3pmMondaythroughThursdaywithtransportationprovided. Women participate in educationsessions, twelve-stepwork, and focus groupson topics including: spirituality, domesticviolence, women’s issues, and parenting.Lunch isprovided,and clients receive servicesregardlessofinsurancecoverage.Whenaskedto reflect on her accomplishments in the IOP,one client responded: “myaccomplishments-beingclean&soberforthefirsttimeinmylifefor58days-I’mlearninghowtodealwithdayto day things in life without looking for a shield maskofdrugs.I’mlearningacceptance”.For more information or to make a referral to the IOP,pleasecontactLiselStephen,[email protected]

Project MAGIC ProjectMAGIC, currently in its second year atRenewalHouse,isaresearch-basedsubstanceabuse prevention program specificallydesigned for children living at Renewal House. The program is focused on mother-childengagement and offers interactive lessons followed by practical hands-on activitiesbetween the mother and child. Topicsmay include reducing stress, language andsocial development, decision making, anddeveloping identityandself image. ThegoalofProjectMAGICistopreventintergenerationalsubstance abuse by promoting the social and personal growth of every child at Renewal House.ProjectMAGICcametoRenewalHousethroughapartnershipwithVanderbiltMedicalSchool and the leadership of Dr. BarbaraEngelhardt.RenewalHouseisproudtopartnerwithFamily&Children’sServicetoprovidethisresource to our residents. Our Project MAGICCoordinator,SusanHoefler,isaLicensedClinicalSocialWorkerwhoinadditiontoProjectMAGICalsoprovidesfamilytherapytoon-siteresidentfamilies,aswellasadditionalfamilyeducationtoourresidents’extendedfamiliesandfriends.

Executive Director’s Report on OperationsIamhappytoreportonanothersixmonthsofquality,comprehensiveservicestowomenstrugglingwithaddiction.Outstandingstaff,boardmembers,andvolunteerskeepRenewalHouserunningandmovingforward.

Weclosed2007 in thespiritofgratitudeandcelebrationwithourannual fund-raisingevent,AWomen’sThanksgiving. ThisyearwewerefortunatetohavesolidsupportfromastronggroupofCorporateSponsors,whichwehopetoexpandin2008.ManygenerousfriendsofRenewalHouseparticipated intheeventasTableSponsorsandGuests. Theaudience, includingRenewalHousestaffandclients,wereprivilegedtowitnesstheoutstandingperformanceofKathyMattea.WeoweunlimitedgratitudetoColleenandTedWelchwhoopenedtheirwonderfulhometohostthePatronParty.

Atthecloseof2007,RenewalHousealsohadtheopportunityspreadourmessageonanationallevel.InOctober,oneofourprogramgraduatestraveledwithaboardmembertoWashingtonDCtoshareherstorywithTennesseeCongressionalStaffers.Ourgraduatedidafabulousjobinformingtheaudienceaboutherpersonalexperiencewithaddiction,domesticviolence,poverty,andsingleparenting,andtheimportanceofprogramslikeRenewalHousethatsupportfamiliesinovercomingthesechallenges.ShebeamswhenrecountingtheeventsofnotonlyherfirsttriptoWashington,butinfactherfirsttriponanairplaneandfirsttripoutofNashville.

InNovember,IwasabletoattendaWashingtonconferenceoffamily-basedaddictionprogramsfromacrossthecountry.Itwasgratifyingtosharestoriesofprogramdesignsandsuccesses,aswellasparticipateinproblem-solvingforthemanyday-by-daychallengesthatfaceagenciesservingthisimportantclientpopulation.Wehopetocontinuelearningfromandpartneringwiththeseorganizationsinthefuture.
