PIVOT: Sets the pace of the bout and acts as the last line of defense. Recognized by the stripe on her helmet cover.

BLOCKER: Protects her team’s jammer from the other team and moves her through the pack while keeping the opposing team’s jammer from scoring.

JAMMER: Scores points. Recognized by the star (or fleur-de-lis) on her helmet. A point is scored for each opposing team member she passes after her initial pass through the pack.

LEAD JAMMER: The first jammer to pass the foremost in-play blocker in the pack legally and in-bounds. Lead jammer has the ability to call the jam.

The game is played with a “pack” consisting of a pivot from each team at the front followed by three blockers from each team lined up behind them. One Jammer from each team lines up behind the pack on the jammer line. The first whistle blow starts the pack rolling in a counter-clockwise motion around the rink. Two short whistles mark the start of the jammers. Jammers battle their way through the pack to acheive lead jammer status.

Skaters in the pack play both offense and defense at the same time. The basic strategy of the pack is to prevent the other teams’ Jammer from getting through and scoring points while at the same time helping their own jammer get through. All blockers and pivots must stay within 20 feet of the pack to be considered “in play.” Points are scored once the jammer has successfully lapped the pack once. One point is scored for every opposing player the jammer legally passed. Jams can last for two minutes, unless the “Lead jammer” calls off the jam by placing her hands on her hips.

PENALTIES: Cutting the track, intentional tripping, intentional falling, grab-bing or pushing, blocking from behind, blocking 20’ plus from the pack. Four minor penalties equals one major penalty.

MINOR: Foul that does NOT cause harm or adversely affects bout MAJOR: Foul that causes harm or adversely affects bout (1:00 in penalty box)
