President’s Message
William Crawford, CIH Greetings from Fernan-dina Beach, Florida! I hope this newsletter finds you doing well. We are very excited about another year of confer-ences and professional development to meet your professional career needs. The fall confer-ence at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine is less than one month away. Now more than ever we see the need to bring you topics that will expand your environmental, health, and safety knowl-edge base given the ever increasing demands of our work environments. We kicked-off my first official function as Presi-dent of the AIHA Florida Section in the beautiful city of Toronto. The Local Sections Meeting had a decidedly “northern fla-vor”, as far as overall representation. In listen-ing to the other local sec-
tions questions and concerns, it made me realize what a treasure we have in the Florida Local Section. The level of development and sophistication of our local section stretches far beyond many others in the United States and Canada. Many ideas were exchanged on how to bring a youth move-ment into our organiza-tion, primarily through the Student Local Sec-tions as well as the lo-cal colleges and univer-sities. During the elec-tion process I tried to evaluate the resumes, as well as the candi-dates that attended, to vote for the best quali-fied AIHA national can-didates that I thought would represent the best interest of the Flor-ida Local Section and Student Local Sections. The AIHA national busi-ness meeting in Toronto also went very well. I
walked away very confident in knowing that we have a strong and financially solvent national organization, with great future leaders to work with in the coming year. In closing, I very much welcome visiting with you in St. Augustine, and would like to sincerely thank our new Board of Directors for all the hard work in what I am sure will be another successful year of con-ferences and professional de-velopment. Safest Regards,
Bill Crawford, CIH

Results of the 6th Semi Annual Golf Tournament From the Links at Wentworth Golf Club in Tarpon Springs
The Florida AIHA held its 6th Semi Annual Golf Tournament at Wentworth Golf Club in Tarpon Springs, Florida on the Wednesday before the Conference. The course was challenging and all the teams had fun. The winning team consisted of a couple of experienced players with a previ-ous championship appearances — there is defi-nitely a pattern of winning here! The winning team was Brian Berke and Eric Berke.
The next Tournament will be held in September at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine. The event is revenue neutral for the Association yet reasonable for the players. If you enjoy sharing a good time with your fellow IHs this is an event you should participate.
We look forward to seeing you then!

James Preacher, with Capital Safety USA, provided a practical and instructive look into “Fall Protection and the New ANSI Standard”. Steve Levine, PhD, CIH, Emeritus Professor of Industrial Health, presented a “Tribute—a Photographic Essay’” from the Michigan School of Public Health. An “AIHA Foundation Update” was provided by Curtis Hintz, CIH, CSP. The Spring 2009 FL AIHA vendor night was a great success! Although vendor participation was down from previous conferences, we were pleased in this current economy to have 14 ven-dors supporting our conference!! In addition to many familiar faces, two new ven-dors participated. Vendor support of the confer-ence is a crucial aspect of our success. Their financial support allows us to keep registration fees within all our budgets. In addition to the delicious appetizers enjoyed by all, many of the attendees won door prizes provided by the ven-dors. The prizes ranged from gift certificates to popular logo hard hats. As you can tell from the pictures, it was a great networking opportunity and a fun social gathering!!
Please continue to support our vendors!! by Linda Boehmer, Conference Committee Chair
