CATHOLICISM 101 Our summer program has begun with more Q & A on our faith. Brush up on your basics, and have a ready answer when someone asks you about why Catholics believe certain things.

When and why did Catholics begin using the

Sign of the Cross?

Christians were using the Sign of the Cross as we know it as early as the 4th century. It evolved from a gesture of making a cross on the forehead, like we

do on Ash Wednesday or at Confirmation, to eventually become the full body cross we now know. It is a prayer, a blessing, and a Sacramental. The Sign of the Cross is a symbol of Christ’s victory over sin and death. When used with holy water, it is a reminder of our baptism. Many have claimed the sign expels demons and even heals. John Vianney said a genuinely made Sign of the Cross "makes

all hell tremble.” There can be no doubt that it is a power-ful gesture of our faith, and is a visible sign to others that we are Christian. Variations of the sign of the cross are used worldwide. Here in the Western world, we use an open hand, repre-senting the 5 wounds of Christ, but in the East, 2 or 3 fin-gers are used. The Small Sign of the Cross, traced on fore-head, lips, and heart, is also used here in the West before the Gospel during Mass.
