ONE GOD, SAME RELIGION – OUR DUTY TO SPREAD THE MESSAGE OF ISLAM
Summary of Khutbah written by Sis. Staci Brody / Florida USA
In the Holy Quran, Al-lah SWT has com-manded Muslims tospread the message ofIslam. Yet some Mus-lims still believe that todo so is not an obliga-tion upon them. Allah
SWT says in the Holy Quran, Surah An-Nahl, v. 125, “Invite to the way of yourLord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best.Indeed, your Lord is most knowing ofwho has strayed from His way, and He ismost knowing of who is [rightly]guided.” In this verse, Allah SWT revealsto the Prophet Muhammad SAW that the
key to circulating the teachings of Islamis through knowledge and beautifiedpreaching. But Allah SWT also says thatto spread the message of Islam is a re-sponsibility and an obligation of every-one who calls themselves a Muslim. Ithas already been stated that Muslims musttake the initiative to propagate the mes-sage of Islam to the best of their ability.Furthermore, it is even more essential thanever in today’s world due to the ever-in-creasing fear and misconceptions thatpeople in our communities hold about ourreligion. In the media, Muslims are por-trayed as being primitive militants whoare intolerant of any beliefs besides theirown. Based on the manipulated images
illustrated in the media alone, it is under-standable to anyone why someone whoknows nothing about Islam would fearsuch a religion. Similarly, these same tac-tics news publications use to instill fearin viewers are also the same strategiesused to shape societies negative views ofother minorities and situations. Yet, it issomething easy to criticize and hard tochange, and although occasionally a me-dia corporation might broadcast a posi-tive aspect of our religion, their bottomline is always to boost sales and makemoney. Therefore, it is up to us to notdepend on the media to back our cause, but rather take the mission of spreadingthe positive messages of Islam into ourown hands. Allah SWT says to first in-vite others with knowledge. Unfortunatelyfor many Muslims this means solely edu-cating themselves. While educating one-self is indeed commendable, Muslimsshould ultimately educate themselves withthe goal of sharing their knowledge withNon-Muslims. Due to the media’s bom-bardment of negative views of Islam, thereare subsequently people in our communi-ties who are begging to know what ourreligion actually says and why it seems tothem to be a new or foreign religion thathas recently surfaced. By educating our-selves (and then spreading the message)we can help them understand that ourreligion is neither new nor foreign at all,but rather is simply a continuation, as wellas a confirmation, of their own religiousbeliefs [Judaism and Christianity]. In thesecond part of Surah An-Nahl, v. 125,Allah SWT instructs us to “argue withthem in a way that is best.” This meansthat we should not quarrel when discuss-ing the differences in our religion, butrather should beautify our words andteach both Jews and Christians that es-sentially our religions are one in the same.

REVEREND’S CORNERBy Rev. Thomas Graf / Professor at BC College, Florida
As I pause to write this article for Al-Hikmat,I was keenly aware of a special celebrationthat recently occured in many ChristianChurches. On, or around, August 15th, therewas a special celebration of Mary, the motherof Jesus. Whenever I attempt to educate my
ST. MARY, THE VIRGIN
Christian brothers and sisters concerning Islamic belief and prac-tices, they are always somewhat shocked to learn that Islam, and specifically the Koran, over and over again speaks of theimportance, the place of honor and clearly the "Lack of sinful-ness" (Imaculate?) associated with Mary, the mother of Jesus. In a famous Hadith attributed to the Prophet, we hear, "Everychild is touched by the devil as soon as he is born and thiscontact makes him cry. Excepted are Mary and her Son." Thefeast that many celebrated was The Assumption of the Blessedvirgin Mary. It is a Christian belief (In some circles) that At thetime of Mary's death, angels came and assisted her to be "As-sumed." lifted to the right hand of God in heaven. In our Epis-copal Church, the feast is celebrated as, "St. Mary, The Virgin, the Mother of God." Over the centuries, no matter what theChristian denomination, Mary has come to hold the title,"THEOTOKOS," translated: "The God-bearer." Quite a tre-mendous role for anyone to possibly assume. Yet, our Chris-tian tradition clearly sets the ground for who such a "bearer"should and could be. Interestingly enough, one of the centralqualities inherent in such a "bearer," as is found within the oneshe bears is HUMILITY. that is why in the Gospel of St. Luke, when Mary is told by the Angel Gabriel that she is to bear theChild Jesus, her response is as follows: Mary said,"My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in Godmy Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of
his servant.Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
for the Mighty One has done great things for me,and holy is his name.
His mercy is for those who fear him from generation togeneration.
He has shown strength with his arm;he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,and lifted up the lowly;
he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of hismercy,
according to the promise he made to our ancestors,to Abraham and to his descendants forever."
Our God calls each and every one of us to be "bearers" ofGod's word. Perhaps if we all attempted to do such with a littlemore "humility" others might listen, and thus come together asone...instead of assuming, and continuing divisions in our placesof faith and throughout our world.
Malik has left no room for such bias. Hismethod is that he himself narrates a tradi-tion and then derives the law from its text.
He has always his analogical deduction on the tradition of theHoly Prophet (peace be upon him) and the juristic opinions ofhis companions. He takes the usages of Madina in the light ofthe traditions. Now you can see that there remains no place forthe ancient customs in this system; Perhaps these people sup-port their claim from the fact that Malik relies on the practice ofthe people of Madina. But they forget that Malik has relied ononly that practice of the people of Madina which is based onand guided by the traditions. Moreover the instances in whichMalik has relied on the practice of Madina, are only a few innumber and each case is supported by strong traditions of theprophet (peace be upon him) How it- is possible that Malik hastaken the customs of Arabia Which are pre-Islamic in originand practised by the Associtors. A few similarities between twocultures do not always mean that one culture has adoptedthose from the other. Those may have quite independent ori-gins. As far AS the fiction of Imam ABU Hanifa and seventeentraditions is concerned , l reproduce what Dr. SUBHI Mahmassanihas written on this point ‘ “Imam Abu Hanifa was very carefulregarding the choice of the tradition. He accepted only thosetraditions which are narrated through reliable chains. In spite ofthis his companions and his students have narrated fifteenMasaneed from him. The Chief Justice Abual MuayyadMohammad bin Mahood Khawarzami has compiled all of thesein one volume. For this reason reject what Ibne Khaldun andsome others have stated that only seventeen traditions have beennarrated by Abu Hanifa”. Imam Abu Yousaf tells the procedureof the committee of the jurists headed by Abu Hanifa: “On ev-ery topic he used to first discuss the relevant traditions andprecedents of the companions of the Prophet (peace be uponhim)”. Hafiz Muhammad bin Yousaf Salihi has written in ‘AqudulJaman’ that Abu Hanifa was also one of the great traditionists. If he had not concentrated on the traditions he would have notbeen able to derive the provisions of Islamic Law. ‘Kitabul Khiraj’of Abu Yousaf and ‘Kitabul Siyar of Mohammad Shaibani arethe living testimony that the ‘Hanafite base their reasoning byanalogy on the traditions. The Caliph Mansoor once wrote alatter to Iman Abu Hanifa that he gave preference to analogyover the traditions. The Imam replied: “What has been reportedto you about me is incorrect.

Hajj. May Allah (swt) bless us all with the health, wealth andmeans to perform the Hajj pilgrimage at least once in our life-time, Ameen.“When you are hurt by the people who share blood relationswith you, recall Yusuf alaihi salaam who was also betrayed byhis brothers”. “When you find your parents opposing you (indeen), recall Ibrahim (A.S) who was burnt by his own father”.When you are mocked and abused by your own relatives justbecause you adopted Deen over Dunya, recall Rasulullah(S.A.W) who faced the same situation”. When you can’t see any logic in what’s going onand your heart asks why is this happening, recall Nuh (A.S)who made the biggest ship without questioning”. Subhan Al-lah. Allah put all those great leaders in trials so that somedaysomeone like you and me, if being faced by any calamity shouldnot question, “WHY ME?” When I read this quote, I am humbledto realize that whatsoever difficulties, I am going through, seemstrivial compared to the trials our leaders went through. Almostevery day, we are faced with a stark realization of the tragediesand the struggle others are facing in this world. Recently, wehave been overwhelmed with images, news scenes and videosof families fleeing their countries, in search of a better futurefor their families. Worldwide attention has been brought tothese families, mothers with children clinging to the side of theovercrowded boats, weak, hungry, sick, struggling for sur-vival, many made it but some did not. The heartbreaking photo/image of the little boy who drowned in the ocean, along withhis brother and mother, activated our sense of compassion, care and realization to the trials of our fellow brothers and sis-ters in humanity. They along with thousands were fleeing tosafety, going to a land where they would probably live in ashelter as refugees, have very little food, water, clothes andbasic amenities. It is a very heartbreaking situation, one whichhas been etched in our memory and conscience.

sion. His love, affection and mercy reflected on man are in-finite. The believer feels this at every moment of his life. Heturns to God with a sincere love at every moment.Anyone who does evil or wrongs himself and then asksGod’s forgiveness will find God Ever-Forgiving, MostMerciful. (Surat an-Nisa’, 110)Were it not for God’s favor to you and His mercy . . .and that God is Ever-Returning, All-Wise. (Surat an-Nur, 10)While believers live their lives in peace, security and joy, withtheir hearts overflowing with love, deniers experience thepunishment of forgetting God in the form of suffering withloveless hearts. They do not love themselves or others nor dothey look on the creations in the universe, the skies, the oceansor the flowers, with love. A grim lovelessness that growsstronger by the day burns their bodies. Their very cells knowtheir lovelessness, their rebellion and lack of submission, andthe millions of cells in their bodies rebel against that. Theirlower-selves run rampant, they become ever more selfishand spoiled and they fall into the worst debasement. Theyexperience only an ersatz love, based entirely on self-inter-est, and fail to realize they never found real love. No reallove can ever form in the heart of someone who does notlove and appreciate God as is His due; that is because Godwill not place that sincere love in his heart. Without love, thebody becomes ill. A lack of trust in God, a lack of compassionand the absence of love devastate such a person. A personwho loses love is like a tree which rots from the inside. Sucha person would be like a barren tree that yields no fruit, withwithered branches, slowly falling apart from the inside. Some-one with no love of God is thus abandoned to Hell while stillin this world. An unbeliever would never taste the joyouslove, compassion and sensitivity that a believer feels in hisheart. He will thus know the reward for turning his back onour Lord, the Bestower of all blessings, by never finding thelove he seeks, either in this world or the next.
“Love is not only something you feel,it is something you do.”
IT IS TOO LATE?IT IS TOO LATE?IT IS TOO LATE?IT IS TOO LATE?IT IS TOO LATE?
How often in our lives do we use the phrase“it’s too late”? It’s too late to forgive, it’stoo late to repent, it’s too late to make thingsbetter again, it’s too late to apologize, andthe list continues. Is it really too latethough? Perhaps not. The only time thatthis infamous phrase is legitimate is after
our last breath, after death has overtaken us. It’s not too late toapologize to someone. It’s not too late to ask Allaah subhanahuwa ta‘ala (exalted is He) to forgive me for all the sins I havecommitted, for every act of ungratefulness and for every dis-obedience to Him. It’s not too late to forgive others who mighthave wronged us. Maybe we are still breathing because we havebeen given a chance to realize that it’s not late for anything. Thefact that we are still here is a sign strong enough to make usrealize that we can still undo our mistakes, still forgive the un-forgiven, still ask for forgiveness from our Lord, and still mendthe hearts we broke. Sometimes we are too arrogant to forgivesomeone. Irrespective of whether we receive an apology fortheir hurtful actions or not, do we really have the authority towithhold forgiveness? If we can be hard hearted enough to notforgive the people in our lives, why then do we expect our Lordto forgive us? Especially, when we continue ignoring Him bynot fulfilling our basic responsibilities as a Muslim. No doubt Heis all All-Forgiving, the Ever Merciful—but if we fail to adopteven a small fraction of mercy in our daily lives then we haveno right to expect the same from others. In a hadith (record ofthe words or actions of the Prophet , peace be upon him) theProphet states: Allaah the Almighty has said: “O son of Adam,so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive youfor what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you thento ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earthand were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, Iwould bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it is.”The Qur’an says: “[…] Pardon them and overlook [their mis-deeds]. Indeed, Allaah loves those the doers of good.” (Qur’an5:13)“[…] who restrain anger and who pardon the people—and Allaahloves the doers of good.” (Qur’an 3:134)Ja’far ibn Muhammad (may Allaah have mercy on him) said,“For me to regret after having pardoned someone is more be-loved to me than to feel regret after punishing someone.”Many a times we feel that since we have sinned so much thereis no way that Allaah (SWT) is going to forgive us (it’s too late). But such thoughts are the work of the devil who entices us intobelieving that we are not worthy of forgiveness. This miscon-ception moves us away from Allaah (SWT) and His worship aswe tend to believe that no amount of worship can now undowhat we did.

LESS IS MORERELIEVING OURSELVES OF
A SELF-INFLICTED BURDEN
“And again I say unto you, It is easierfor a camel to go through the eye of aneedle, than for a rich man to enterinto the kingdom of God.” (Matthew19:24) These words of Prophet Eesa(AS) are known worldwide, and com-prise a maxim that is one of his most
famous Ahadeeth. What many non-Muslims are unaware of isthat a similar analogy is found within the pages of the Qur’an:“Indeed, those who reject Our verses and are arrogant regard-ing them - the gates of Heaven will not be opened for them, andthey will not enter Paradise until a camel shall pass through theeye of a needle. And in this way do We recompense the crimi-nals.” (Al-A’raf 7:40) It is interesting that in the first instancethe danger is the accumulation of riches, and in the secondinstance it is that of arrogance precipitated by rebellion againstAllah (SWA). The truth is that the accumulation of riches canalso lead to arrogance; specifically, the notion that wealth insome way makes a person superior. The riches that a persongains today are gained from the Dunyah and gained in theDunyah. Some argue that it is not wealth itself that is the prob-lem, but rather one’s attachment to it. The Christian ApostlePaul, for example, argued that, “the love of money is the root ofall evil.” (1 Timothy 6:10). Notice, he did not condemn money, but only the love of it. There is some truth in this, of course. There are people who have earned or inherited great wealth, buthave somehow managed – against all the odds – to maintain anemotional detachment towards it. However, such a perceptioncan sometimes be somewhat short-sighted. Rasoolallah (SAW)once said, "It is difficult for a man laden with riches to climbthe steep path that leads to bliss." (Muslim). Notice that he didnot differentiate between those who loved their wealth and thosewho simply accepted it. Whatever attitude one has towards one’sriches, it does not alter the fact that we are burdened by them.Money has to be managed, and anything that has to be managedis a distraction. The Prophet Mohammed (SAW) did not say itwas impossible for a rich man to, “climb the steep path thatleads to bliss", but that it was certainly “difficult”. Prophet Eesa(AS) was once asked by a young man, “What must I do to gaineternal life?” As one would expect of any good servant of Allah(SWA), Eesa (AS) answered, “If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.” Submission to Allah, then, was theprime requisite for salvation. Eesa (AS) detailed some of thesecommandments of Allah (SWA), to which the man responded,“I have done all of these things from my youth until now, sowhat am I still lacking?”

left over 700 pilgrims killed and nearly 1000 injured, except theSaudi Minister of Health who blamed the victims for their deaths,a US newspaper quoted witnesses as confirming that the Saudiofficials are responsible for the incident. “Some present in thearea at the time said security forces had temporarily closed ex-its from an area packed with pilgrims, causing the crowdingthat led to the stampede,” New York Times said. According tothe paper, Khalid Saleh, a Saudi government employee whorushed to the site when he heard screams and sirens, said hehad found “huge numbers of people on the ground either dyingor injured.” Pilgrims there told him that some of the area’s exitshad been closed so that V.I.P. cars could pass, he said. How-ever, the head of Iran’s Hajj pilgrimage, Said Ohadi, said twopaths had been sealed near the site where the stampede oc-curred for “unknown reasons” and claimed “this caused thetragic incident”, according to AP. Ohadi said the path closuresleft only three routes to the area where the “stoning the devil”ritual takes place. The apparent victim-blaming was also stig-matized by Mohammed Jafari, an adviser to Hajj and UmrahTravel, the first hajj travel agency in the UK. Speaking on BBCRadio 4’s Today program, he alleged that the roads were closedin occasion of King Salman’s meeting with dignitaries from otherGulf countries in his palace in Mina. “The Saudis say after ev-ery disaster ‘it is God’s will’. It is not God’s will – it is man’sincompetence,” he said. “Talking to pilgrims on the ground yes-terday, the main reason for this accident was that the king, inhis palace in Mina, was receiving dignitaries and for this reasonthey closed two entrances to where the stoning happened ...these were the two roads where people were not able to pro-ceed.” “You have a stream of people going in and if you stopthat stream, and the population builds up, eventually there isgoing to be an accident,” he continued. “It is the fault of theSaudi government because any time a prince comes along, theyclose the roads, they don’t think about the disaster waiting tohappen.” The Saudi press agency reported on 24 Septemberthat the King was received by Bin Naif, the deputy minister, minister of interior and chairman of the Supreme Hajj Commit-tee, and by other ministers and senior civilians and military of-ficials. A Lebanese newspaper, the Arabic-language daily al-Diyar,conjectured that the one- way traffic directions were changedto allow the large convoy of Prince Mohammad bin Salman al-Saud to pass through and reach Mina palace for a meeting withthe King, his father.

Kiran Khan Paracha
By: Sis. Kiran / Pembroke Pines FL.People have wronged us and we havebeen betrayed. It is something that hap-
REVENGEand
JUSTICEpens to each one of us. The thoughts of revenge and seekingjustice consume us for days. We would either become para-lyzed with fury or depressed with our inability to take action. These can be slight injustices like someone being rude to youfor no reason, or something more serious like a husband cheat-ing on his wife. But the fact remains that in all such cases, wefeel like taking revenge. In some cases, revenge is easy but inothers it is impossible. Always take action but never revengeand I will explain that a little later in the article. Always remem-ber, it is Allah’s (SWT) job to take revenge, your job is to takeaction to protect yourself from further harm. The thought willfill you with a sense of peace that had otherwise been robbedfrom you for so long. If you just remember that Allah (SWT) isthe best of revenge takers, it will take all your worries away andI promise you, He takes revenge like no one else. “Fear Allah;Surely Allah is severe in retribution” (5:3) One girl I know wasmarried to a semi-psychopath. Three months into marriage, hekicked her out saying that she was involved with someone else. She never was. He even claimed that the child she was carryingfor not his. Fast forward two years, the girl was now divorcedwith a small child that father never came to see. The girl’s fam-ily was filled with feelings of anger, revenge and more. Theydid take action but never revenge. They filed for divorce afterwaiting and watching how things transpire. As the divorce wasfinalized, they accepted the reality, sought Allah’s refuge, anddecided to move on. The girl was soon remarried- this time to aguy the family knew well. Now ten years have passed sincethat incident. The girl is happily married with four children. Herex-husband killed his second wife (poor girl) and later commit-ted suicide. That is Allah’s revenge. Just pray that you are neveron the receiving end of His revenge. Not seeking revenge how-ever doesn’t mean inaction. Inaction only fills your life withnegativity that is seriously damaging to your emotional and psy-chological health. But action may not be directed against thewrongdoer. It has more to do with yourself than the other per-son. For example a mean friend cannot hurt you over and overagain if you keep your distance. You do not have to be in theirway repeatedly to get hurt. Keep your distance as much aspossible. The same goes for all relations which cannot be com-pletely cut off but are toxic nonetheless. I would never advo-cate complete inaction unless it was an exclusive once-in-a-while incident.

lar boxing career in the heavyweight division. One of the great-est boxers of all times, Ali won fans from all over the work dueto his lightning punches, fast footwork and the famous tauntsof his opponents. I myself followed Ali in the media as he tra-versed the world to seek greatness and at the same time toraise the status of the African American in the field of sports. In this regard he was highly successful, winning plaudits fromall over in doing so. No wonder then, Muhammad Ali was knownas ‘The Greatest’. In Ali’s rise to the top, he had to defeatboxers of repute in order to show his boxing prowess and thatalso he was ready for world championship battle. Ali demon-strated his readiness despite getting stiff challenges from box-ers Sonny Banks and Henry Cooper who both floored him tothe ground. Doug Jones was another worthy opponent Ali faced. In all three fights, Ali, however was the eventual winner againstthe threesome who was noted for their boxing tenacity. Thestage was then set for boxing glory. Ali’s adrenalin was flow-ing. Sonny Liston’s title was at stake. The boxing fraternitywas anxious because two greats had to face each other in Mi-ami. Eventually February 25, 1964 reached and both Ali andListon slugged it out in the ring. Ali was the dominant one in thering for most of the fight as he inflicted telling blows on Listonwhich left him dazed for a while. Sonny Liston eventually ca-pitulated having failed to answer the bell in the seventh round, thus the crowning of a new heavyweight boxing champion ofthe world, Muhammad Ali. As a result of this victory, Ali at 22,became the youngest boxer at that time to snatch the heavy-weight boxing crown from a reigning champion. As if the bar-rage of punches in the first fight was not enough for SonnyListon, he squared off with Ali in a rematch in May, 1965 andwas soundly beaten in the first round of the fight when refereeJersey Joe Walcott stopped the match. With this win in thebag, Ali had to face formidable boxers from around the globeas the years passed. However, a sudden twist in Ali’s life wasto take place. He refused to be drafted into the army and so asa result, a boxing license was withheld from him and also hispassport was taken away. Ali therefore could not take part inofficial boxing bouts until he was granted a license to box onAugust 12, 1970.

AL-HIKMAT INTERNATIONAL MUSLIM MAGAZINE
This image should have traumatized usinto first, praying for the well-being of allthese brothers and sisters and children, secondly, compelled us to find out howwe can help, and lastly, awaken us to ap-preciate all the blessings we have. Re-minding us that all the trivial things wecomplain and gripe about, is incomparableto the realities they are facing on a dailybasis. Although these families are thou-sands of miles away from us, we shouldnot leave it for others to help. There areorganizations that are appealing to us tohelp, the local mosques can also provideus with information on ways to help andsupport. One thing that never fails andalways helps is our prayers and duas. Wehave to make effort and encourage oth-ers to contribute, and to assist those whobadly need our help. We also need to begrateful for all our blessings, our home, our health, our secure environment, ourjobs, our families, our wealth, and all theabundance of conveniences that we haveavailable to us and we need to refrain fromcomplaining for minor troubles and diffi-culties. May Allah (swt), guide and pro-tect our brothers and sisters who are fac-ing great tests, difficulties, danger, men-ace and tragedies, and reward them withJanatul Firdaus. Ameen.

Hence we give up on all our attempts atseeking forgiveness and we also give upon whatever worship we were previouslyinvolved in. Led astray by the devil atwork, we tend to forget that Allaah (SWT)loves it when His creations come to Himrepenting and begging for forgiveness.“Say: “O My servants who have trans-gressed against themselves [by sinning],do not despair of the Mercy of Allaah.Indeed, Allaah forgives all sins. Indeed, itis He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.”(Qur’an 39:53) Allaah’s mercy is vast anddeep, beyond human comprehension. Butit’s the human aspect of forgiveness thatneeds to be reformed. Blinded by our ar-rogance, we hold grudges and threatenpeople with statements like “I will neverforgive you.” Many times we don’t evenmean it and we forgive immediately afterour anger subsides but sometimes we maymake it a point to forgive only when askedfor forgiveness. This is not a trait liked inthe servants of Allaah (SWT). We shouldlearn to forgive others with an open heartthat our gesture of mercy will InshaAllaah (God Willing) shower Allaah’s(SWT) Mercy on us. Apologizing does notindicate that we are subservient to the onewe apologize to. It does not stain our repu-tation or our worldly status, rather it’s asimple action that signifies our fear of ourLord Whose ultimate Mercy we seek whileheeding that our humble attitude with Hispeople will win us His Pleasure. But weneed to remember that this belief inAllaah’s Mercy does not mean that we keepon displeasing Him with the assurance thatHe will forgive us. Brothers and sisters, let’s all apologize to our parents, friends, siblings, spouses and anyone else onwhom we have inflicted pain with both

our tongue and actions. Let’s all seek the forgiveness of each other in order to attainsalvation and the Mercy of our Lord. Let’s not keep the forgiveness limited to textsand Facebook statuses during Ramadan and in the last 10 days of Ramadan. Instead, let’s keep the spirit of forgiveness flowing all year around. Insha Allaah, we will berewarded for it, if not in this world, then in the next one. May Allaah bless us with thetrait of forgiveness and shower His Mercy and Forgiveness on us all. Ameen.

A Priest and a Rabbi were in a carcrash and it was a bad one. Both oftheir cars were demolished, butamazingly neither one of them ishurt. After they crawl out of theircars, the Rabbi says, “So you’re aPriest. That’s interesting; I’m aRabbi. Wow, just look at our cars! There’s nothing left, but we’re un-hurt. This must be a sign from Godthat we should meet and be friendsand live together in peace.” ThePriest replies, “Oh, yes, I agree. It’sa miracle that we survived and arehere together.” “And here’s anothermiracle,” says the Rabbi. “My car isdestroyed but this bottle of wine didn’tbreak. Surely God wants us to drinkthe wine and celebrate our good for-tune,” he says, handing the bottle tothe priest. The priest nods in agree-ment, opens the wine, drinks half ofit, and hands it back to the Rabbi. The Rabbi takes it and puts the capback on. ”Aren’t you going to haveany,” asks the Priest. ”Not rightnow,” says the Rabbi, “I think I’llwait until after the police come andmake his report.”

MUHAMMAD ALIBy Br. Hamzad Mohammed
Some sports commentators have said thatAli was at his prime in boxing during hisinactivity in the ring from March, 1967to October 1970, one such person beingAli’s trainer who once said, “One thingmust be taken into account when talkingabout Ali: He was robbed of his best years, his prime years.” Boxing action restarted. How can boxing fans forget Ali’s firstfight in 1971 against Joe Frazier, the worldheavyweight boxing champion at the time. That match, billed as the ‘Fight of theCentury’ was won by Frazier on a unani-mous decision. This gave Ali his first tasteof defeat in professional boxing. The twothen met in a rematch in 1974 and Aliwon by a unanimous decision and alsoagain in 1975 known as the ‘Thrilla inManila’ when by a TKO Ali won. Thencame the match called ‘The Rumble inthe Jungle’ in the country of Zaire in Af-rica in 1974 with Ali against the reigningheavyweight champion George Foreman.I personally had the privilege to see thatlive on television in my home country of

THE LEGENDARY HEAVYWEIGHT BOXERTrinidad and Tobago. In that famous fight,Ali demonstrated the ‘Rope-A-Dope’ style(a retreat to the ropes to invite puncheswhile counter punching). Ali eventuallybecame the winner in the eighth roundvia a knockout. Thereafter Ali fought andwon a few battles in the ring whilst alsolosing some. His speed declined and thosefamous punches of his lost the zest thatone was accustomed to seeing.Parkinson’s syndrome got the better ofhim in 1984 and debilitated his physicalcapacity. How sad! America rememberedAli and honoured him. For example, Alilit the flame at the 1996 Summer Olym-pics in Atlanta. Not to forget also themomentous occasion when PresidentGeorge presented him with the Presiden-tial Medal of Freedom. So too was En-gland when another honour was bestowedon him as he was made the titular bearerof the Olympic flag at the 2012 SummerOlympics opening ceremonies in London.Ali became the subject of artists, sing-ers, writers, film makers and newspapers.
A mall in Philippines was named after him.An honorary doctorate of humanities wasbestowed on him by America’s PrincetonUniversity. Such was the aura of the manwho lit the world with his torch of pugi-listic brilliance. Muhammad Ali performedbrilliantly and admirably in both his ama-teur and professional boxing careers. Attimes though, he drew controversy forhis taunting which some saw as abjecthumiliation of the many black fighters hefaced. Regardless of any scorn pouredon him, Muhammad Ali is still loved bymany in America and the rest of the world.MAY ALLAH BRING SOME RELIEF TOALI’S DISTRESS. LONG LIVEMUHAMMAD ALI! END

I take, first of all, the Qur’an, then the Sunnah of the Prophet, then the opinions of Abu Bakr, Omar, Usman, Ali and then theopinions of other companions. But when there is differenceamong the companions, I resort to analogy. According to IbneHazam the companions of Abu Hanifa are unanimous on thepoint that he used to reject analogy in the presence of even aweak tradition (the tradition narrated through weak chain) (Thisexcerpt is taken from the book titled “The Reconstruction OfLegal Thought in Islam” authored by Syed Riazul Hassan andPublished by Law Publishing Company Lahore, Pakistan)
(Note: In the next installment “Ijma” (Consensus of Opinion) and Qiyas - Reasoning by
analogy) as dependent sources shall be discussed.

Even the Hadiths support this; In Sahih Muslim, Book 30, HadithNumber 5834, Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger SAWsaying: “I am most akin to the son of Mary among the whole ofmankind and the Prophets are of different mothers, but of onereligion, and no Prophet was raised between me and him (JesusChrist).” The Holy Quran also provides evidence of this in SurahAsh-Shuraa, Ch. 42 v.13, when it states, “He has ordained foryou of religion what He enjoined upon Noah and that which Wehave revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what We enjoinedupon Abraham and Moses and Jesus - to establish the religionand not be divided therein.” By analyzing this scripture, it isclear that we not only share the same beliefs as earlier Chris-tians and Jews, but that we also practice the same religion asthem and vice-versa. Their Prophets are our Prophets and weworship the same God: Allah SWT. There are other verses inboth the Torah and the Bible which maintain that we are all partof one religion. In the Old Testament, in Genesis 16, it is con-firmed that Hagar, is indeed the legitimate second wife of Ibrahim.Hagar bore a son from Ibrahim, who is the Prophet Ishmaeland also the ancestor of Prophet Muhammad SAW. Also, thedress code of Muslim women is also criticized as being “op-pressive”.

Eesa (AS) said to him, If you desire to beperfect [in your keeping of the command-ments], go and sell what you have andgive to the poor. You shall have treasurein heaven. Then, come and follow me.”Then we are told, “But when the youngman heard that saying, he went awaydeeply saddened, for he had many pos-sessions.” (Matthew 19: 17-22)Rasoolallah (SAW) once said, “Detachyourself from the world and Allah will loveyou. Detach yourself from what peoplepossess and they will love you.” AbuHuraira also narrated, “The Prophet said,‘Riches does not mean having a greatamount of property; but riches is self-contentment.’" So, how can we free our-selves from the burden of riches?. Thebest way is to divest ourselves of wealthso that it does not weigh us down. Weshould give it to the poor, or in some otherway spend it in the service of Allah (SWA).To those who have become accustomedto wealth, this may seem a frighteningprospect, but we must trust in Allah(SWA). The hard truth is that there is sim-ply no way we can justify being wealthywhen someone has been forced to begfor a living on the street outside. Yet, wemust also bear in mind that poverty canalso be used by Shaitan to instil badthoughts within us. A poor person canactually become materialistic if his or herthoughts are consumed with nought butgaining more material possessions. TheProphet Mohammed (SAW) taught ushow to cure this sickness: "When you seea person who has been given more thanyou in money and beauty, look to those, who have been given less." (Muslim) Per-haps the greatest piece of advice we canembrace is that found within anotherhadeeth: "No man is a true believer unlesshe desires for his brother that which hedesires for himself." (Bukhari & Muslim). If we all followed that glorious principle, there would be no one of great wealth, but neither would there be any poverty.Only greed stands in the way...END

According to the report, the deputy crownprince and defense minister arrived es-corted by 350 security forces including200 military and 150 policemen.Mohammed Jafari said: ’Talking to pilgrimson the ground, they say the main reasonfor this accident was that the King and hispalace was receiving dignitaries includingthe minister of defense and members ofthe GCC (the Gulf Co-operation Council).Jafari’s remarks were echoed by othereyewitnesses who survived the deadlystampede. Yusuf Ibrahim Yakasai, from theBBC’s Hausa Service, cited a witness assaying the Saudi security at the sceneblocked one of the roads to the Jamarat.“This happened as thousands of pilgrimsfrom different countries like Iran,Cameroon, Ghana and Niger were goingto the Jamarat,” he said. “Therefore, asthose who finished stoning the devil werecoming back on the same route, they metthose heading to the place. There was akind of collision between the two groupsmoving in opposite directions on the sameroad. Those in the middle were the mostaffected.” Another pilgrim from Londonwho was in Mina on 24 September,Bashaar Jamil, told the Guardian the exittunnel “was closed by authorities andpeople were using one tunnel to go in andcome out”. He recounted how he man-aged to survive the stampede along withhis mother by leaving as quickly as pos-sible before thousands of people gotcrushed in the tunnel. Pilgrims and Mus-lim groups hit back angrily, accusing Saudipolice of creating fatal bottlenecks by clos-ing two roads being used by hundreds ofthousands of worshippers. END

ence between revenge and action shouldbe clear in your head. Do not harm theother person for it can land you in trouble.Leave it up to Allah (SWT) to take re-venge. Your job is to just protect yourselfwhich you must do by keeping your dis-tance from those who like to hurt you andstaying more with people who have a posi-tive influence on your life. Rememberaction and not revenge should be yourgoal. Protect yourself and those you love.Let Allah handle the rest. He loves youand wants you to be happy. He then asksonly that you take steps to make your lifebetter. He doesn’t burden you with thejob of vengeance. He is way too power-ful too mighty and too resourceful to leavethe job of revenge to you. His revengemight take time but it will surely befallthose who repeatedly wrong others andnever seek forgiveness. END
Yet, in The Bible, 1 Corinthians 11:6, aJewish or Christian woman is also in-structed to cover her head [while pray-ing]. Lastly, in the New Testament of TheBible, it is said, in Matthew 26:39, thatwhen Jesus AS prayed he “fell on hisface,” which is another way of saying heprostrated in prayer to God, similar toMuslims. In the United States there areover six million Muslims living today. Itis difficult to believe then why these mis-conceptions about our religion continue. It is easy to blame others (the media, big-ots, etc.) for our own shortcomings, butit is imperative for us to take seriouslyown inadequacies of learning and spread-ing the message of The Quran and Islam. As explained in this article, there are avast amount of similarities between Ju-daism, Christianity, and Islam, and wemust educate not only ourselves on whatthey are, but we also must go a step fur-ther and educate others, Inshaa Allah. Byobtaining knowledge and sharing it, hope-fully we can start doing a better job ofcombating the negative rhetoric being cir-culated about Islam and replace it with amore positive and realistic message aboutwhom we are and what we believe,Inshaa Allah, Ameen.
