PROJECT DESCRIPTIONS

The Shell Belt and Coden Belt Roads Living Shoreline project and the Point aux Pins Living Shoreline project will both be located in Mobile County in the Portersville Bay portion of the Mississippi Sound.

As the implementing Trustee for both projects, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will employ living shoreline techniques that utilize natural and/or artificial breakwater material to dampen wave energy to protect shorelines, while also providing habitat and increasing benthic secondary productivity.

The Point aux Pins Living Shoreline project will stabilize shoreline located near Point aux Pins which has shown evidence of erosion over time. In addition to protecting shorelines, the Shell Belt and Coden Belt Road Living Shoreline project will enhance the growth of planted native marsh vegetation.

Construction activities for both living shoreline projects will include placement of intertidal breakwater materials that may utilize artificial Wave Attenuation Units. The specific construction techniques and designs will be selected to maximize project effectiveness and meet regulatory requirements. Over time, the breakwaters are expected to develop into reefs that support benthic secondary productivity, including, but not limited to, bivalve mollusks, annelid worms, shrimp, crabs, and small forage fishes.
