KATYA SLEPIAN/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Veteran Tom Price, 92, speaks with a pair of students from VAST Education Centre about his time serving in Italy and Holland with the Calvary Tanks from 1941–45. Price was part of the Dieppe raid, was decorated by King George of England for bravery, and said he once met the pope.
Veterans share stories in VAST student project
KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Remembrance Day came about as a way to remember those who have fought for our freedom, in wars both new and old.
For the past five years, a group of Port Alberni students have been ensuring that those memories are heard and passed onto the new generation. Students from VAST spend a morning each October interviewing veterans who belong to Royal
Canadian Legion Branch 293 here in Port Alberni. They learn first hand of these veterans’ stories (published starting on B1), from the Second World War to the Korean War and
conflicts that have happened in their young lifetimes.
“I’ve very aware that these stories are not going to be around for much longer,” said VAST teacher Kama Money. Since the project began, 11 veterans students have met and interviewed have
passed away.“These people are
elders and these stories are dying off with them so I do feel a sense of urgency in capturing these stories and sharing them with the communities.”
The stories, emotional from both tears and laughter, teach the students not only history but life lessons as well.
“A lot of students view these legion members as pseudo-
grandparents and they have tremendous respect for what they’ve experienced and what they’ve survived, and the wisdom that they’ve collected.”
That wisdom is often especially pertinent to the students at VAST, which is the school district’s alternative education program.
“Many Legion members that we interviewed have very spotty educational paths. They didn’t really love school and so joining the war effort was a chance for adventure and to reinvent their lives with a sense of personal freedom as well as freedom for their country,” Money said.

◆ COVER STORY
Plywood Girls’ war efforts included trio of sistersJACKIE CARMICHAEL
SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
Just one of many “Rosie the Riveters” who stepped into the workplace when their country asked them to during the Second World War, Jean Chapman Everard Vowel Hargrove has many memories of the era.
Now 89, the Port Alberni resident was 16 when she abandoned school books for sawdust at the Port Alberni Plywood Plant, along with her older sisters Lois and Faith.
Jean Hargrove had just turned 16 in January 1942 when the Alply plant opened, a month after Pearl Harbour upped the scale of the war and brought the United States into the mix. The plant was in
a hurry to produce plywood to be used for everything from ammunition boxes to airplanes, to support the Allied war effort.
Of British, German and French descent, the three Chapman girls together—Jean
was the youngest— formed one per cent of the Plywood Girls workforce in Port Alberni. They tied up their long, wavy brunette hair in kerchiefs as they went off to turn prime West Coast Douglas fir into
something the Allies could use to battle the Axis powers, anything that might bring Port Alberni’s servicemen home.
“I was turning sheets .. then I went to the bundling end, they put a strip of paper on each piece of plywood that said ‘OVERSEAS,’”
Jean recalled, hazel eyes alight at the memory.
“They made these big sheets of plywood—they were for airplanes, and they were as long as this room,” she said, gesturing the length of her cosy suite at Rainbow Gardens.
Most of the 300-plus workers were young women.
“There weren’t any men—the men were gone to war,” Jean said. “We were just there to do our job—I felt like I was contributing.”
There was camaraderie amongst
the Plywood Girls, she recalled.
“Sometimes at the end of the shift on the fifth day, we’d walk up to the Beaufort Hotel and we’d have a feast—we’d have a steak,” she said.
With her 36 cents an hour (42 cents for the later shift) she’d buy clothes; $20 a month for room and board went to her mother and father, former Saskatchewan farmers who had come to Vancouver Island to get out of Canada’s Dust Bowl during the Great Depression.
Jean Chapman developed strong muscles and a strong work ethic at the Plywoods. There may have been some longevity attached; the three Chapman girls are still thriving into their 90s.

Alex ander JJ CayerApril 6, 1931 – October 21, 2015
It is with great sadness and relief in our hearts that we have to say our fi nal “Good Night” of Mr. Alexander Cayer. Alex, at the age of 84, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2015 at the Ty Watson House in Port Alberni, B.C.Alex was predeceased by his beloved wife,
Beatrice, a.k.a. Bea; his parents; and numerous brothers and sisters. He is survived by his children Linda and Alex (Annette); one sister, Florence; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family. Alex was born in Ontario and was one of 13 children. He did many diff erent jobs early on in life, but he was a carpenter for most of his adulthood; which is how some of you knew him. Two of you knew him as Dad. Some of you knew him as Alex, your friend, boss, or work associate. Some as Uncle Alex and some of you knew him as Grandpa and Great Grandpa. Some of you didn’t know him at all.I knew him as Pops…a man full of hardships, life experiences, and stories of years gone by. What he lacked in education, he learned along many diff erent paths in his life. As a result, he was stubborn, battered, hurt, and regretful, but he would not let that get him down. He learned from those paths strength, talent, wisdom, determination, pride, and he gained a sense of humor. But the most important quality he possessed was knowing that he was not a perfect human being and that he had made mistakes along his journey in life. Yes, I saw the bad and the good; we had our moments of the last 25 years. This brings me to the very heart and soul of who he really was…grateful, generous, kind, witty, playful, and loving!Pops, you are forever missed but you will live on in our hearts forever and ever, until we meet again. We Love You

Following Alex’s wishes, no formal service will be held. In lieu of fl owers, a donation can be made in Alex’s memory to the Ty Watson House, 2649 – 2nd Avenue, Port Alberni, BC., V9Y 1Z8.

An American national park has been established in Richmond, California to tell the stories of the many Rosie the Riveters who helped the Allies win the Second World War and to change the face of the North American workforce.
“An inspiring and
compelling saga of human struggle, courage and inspiration unfolded barely 75 years ago, during the 1940s, across the United States,” says the site, www.rosietheriveter.org, which aims to tell the stories of Home Front efforts.
“Ordinary but quite extraordinary people stepped up to the huge challenge
of a world engulfed in war, helped to win an unequaled victory, and in the process, created some of our society’s most important social advances, including workplace integration, equal work opportunities for women, early childhood education and more.
“These stories inspire us today.”

Students and teachers from VAST School gather with veterans from Royal Canadian Legion Branch #293 in October. Students spent a morning interviewing veterans about their experiences in the Armed Forces.
KATYA SLEPIAN/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Students schooled in vets’ pastKAMA MONEY
SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
This partnership between the VAST Education Centre and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 293 is one of our most important projects each year, and I hold it close to my heart.
Now in our fifth year
working together, it is shocking to sit back and realize that 11 Alberni Valley veterans have now passed on since our first student/veteran interviews. I feel a sense of urgency to create connections between local teenagers and veterans and provide
opportunities to listen and record their experiences.
Voices are being lost, and we must make the time and effort to learn from our living history while we still can.
We will take time to pause on Nov. 11 and recall the words from the veterans about why Remembrance Day is important to them:
• Tom Price: “It’s important to respect all the heroes who died for our freedom”
• Tom Edmonson: “It’s important to remember the people who didn’t come back. I lost a lot of friends”.
• Ralph Mortensen:
“To remember the fallen”.
• Winnie Koal: “To remember the ones who sacrificed”.
• Bill Cherwak: “It’s important to remember the fallen soldiers and to hope Canada doesn’t get involved with war again”.
To the VAST students, thank you for your tremendous respect and thoughtful contributions of art and writing. Thank you to Nick Seredick, Diane Best, and Susan Salmon for supporting our students through this unique experience.
To the Alberni Valley News, thank you for
documenting our dialogue and sharing our stories with our community.
To the BC Retired Teachers’ Association, thank you for choosing our partnership to receive the ‘Golden Star’ Award and $1000 grant to fund art supplies, a shared lunch together, and student volunteering and visits to the Field of Honour.
Thank you to Graham Fox and Sandy Patterson for your commitment to connecting high school students with veterans and supporting the art and writing contests. We’d also like to thank Tim Murphy for overseeing our volunteering to sort the poppies and giving us a tour of the Legion, and to Barrie Ward for the Field of Honour tour.
To the members of the local Legion, thank you for your time, honesty and courage to share your stories with our students. You made a lasting impression on all of us, and we felt instantly comfortable with you. Seeing your spirited conversations reminded me of grandparents speaking gently with their grandchildren--many who are now the exact age you were when you joined the war effort.
We will never forget you.
Kama Money is a teacher/advisor at VAST Education Centre in Port Alberni.

Military wives vital to war effort tooVeteran: Gwen Elliston, 74
Student Interviewers: Ante Parac, Natasha Faust, Keith Jokinen, Makayla Anderson, Ben Salitter
Tell us about yourself: I am the wife of a soldier. I left home at 19 and travelled to New Brunswick.
Where did you grow up? A little town east of Toronto.
What were you like as a teenager? How are things different for us? I was quiet. I was never really outgoing. I was an average student and never really got into trouble. I was very excited to be dating a soldier!
Why did you join
the war effort? How old were you? I knew I was in the military as much as my husband, even though I wasn’t fighting. Our family experienced lots of moves and exposure to travel and potential
danger. In Germany, they
would announce “Snowball”, which indicated danger, and we would have to pack up the entire family and relocate to a safe
place immediately. Snowball has a different meaning to me than most people. I think of running around, grabbing my suitcase, and rushing off when I hear it!
What do you want
our generation to know? We aren’t all old fuddie duddies. We care about our children and our grandchildren. Remember that there is a war going on, and also that there are young veterans living in Port Alberni.
What is one thing you learned from your experience? Military life, for the most part, is a fantastic life. I loved the life I lived.
How did your parents, friends, or significant other react to you joining the war effort? I never felt stranded. I would still see my parents sometimes.
If you had to do it all again, would you make the same
decisions? Yes.What does
Remembrance Day mean to you? I had a cousin die in the
war. It’s important to remember that the soldiers gave everything. Don’t ever forget.
KATYA SLEPIAN/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Students from VAST Education Centre jot down notes from veteran Gwen Elliston’s life story during a session at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 293.
Civilians suffer most in wartimeVeteran: Bill McCulloch, 92
Interviewers: Ryan Babiak, Kama Money, Susan Salmon, Linda Planes, Ante Parac, Ben Salitter
What is one thing you learned from your experience? In war, it’s really the innocent civilians who are the most negatively affected. The civilians and children really take the brunt.
What does Remembrance Day mean to you? I have a log book that I re-read, chronicling where men are buried, where they were taken prisoner. I read this to remember my friends who I served beside, and to never forget their sacrifices.
Our veterans are getting older, and soon there will be none of us left. We need to make sure our next generations never forget and never let war happen again.

We believe that when
we stand united in
acts of remembrance,
we can make a world
of difference.
This year, with continuing
turmoil worldwide, the need becomes even more apparent to keep November 11
aside for current & future generations to remember and appreciate their
courage and sacrifices made in the name of freedom.
ALL STORES WILL BE CLOSED NOVEMBER 11, 2015
In keeping with a tradition since 2001, all Quality Foods stores close each Remembrance Day to pause and reflect on the importance of the role of our past and present service men and women.
Whether in times of war or peace, we are ever grateful for these brave souls who put themselves in harm’s way for the greater good of all Canadians.

‘In war, no one is left unscathed’Veteran: Winnie Koal, 80
Interviewers: Keith Jokinen, Kama Money (teacher)
Where and when did you serve? 1952-1956 Germany
Where did you grow up? Port Alberni. Our home was searched by agents as my dad immigrated from Germany in 1930. He became a Canadian citizen in 1935. Reason for the search was to see if he was a sympathizer to the enemy (Germany)
His store windows (in the building that formerly housed Taylor’s Flowers and is now Animal Ark on Third Avenue) were painted with large swastika signs with black paint. In war no one is left unscathed.
Why did you join the military? How old were you? Joined the RCAF (W.M) in July
1952 after finishing school at ADSS. Joined a contingent in Vancouver by train were on our way to St. Jean, Que. for basic training.
In April 1954 I was transferred to Germany and to the telecom section as a switch operator. Got my training for that also at Clinton.
Those that spoke German went to 3 Wing Zweibruchen and 4 Wing Baden-Soellingen.
Those that spoke French went to 2 Fighter Wing Grostenquin in Metz, France.
What do you want our generation to know? We didn’t have what we have today.
What it was like on thehome front.
If you had to do it all again, would you make the same decisions? Not the way it is today, with women bearing arms.
Why is Remembrance Day important to you? It’s important to remember the ones who sacrificed.

Student Interviewers: Ryan Babiak, Oliver Haggen, Ben Salitter, Ante Parac
Where and when did you serve? Canada 1945-1949
What were you like as a teenager? How are things different for us? I was a farmer. I fed animals, milked cows. We used horses, didn’t have cars. We had no computers, no TV, no electricity. We
got our news from an old radio.
What do you want our generation to know? Don’t have any more wars. I also learned about the true value of life.
What is one thing you learned from your experience? I learned how to look after myself. I also learned how to be independent.
What does Remembrance Day mean to you? You should never, ever forget.

Veteran says he would do it all over againVeteran: Bill Cherwak, 84
Student Interviewers: Alexea Haberland, Natasha Faust, Makayla Anderson, Alex Boucha
Where and when did you serve? Joined in 1950-- served for 15 years in the navy, spent 10 years in Halifax and five years in Victoria. Went from Esquimalt to Hawaii in 1965.
Where did you grow up? Born in Kenora, Ontario. Left at 19.
What were you like as a teenager? How are things different for us? I had a tough time in high school, left after grade 10. I had a desire to travel and was getting really restless. I wanted to be on a train, going somewhere exciting.
Things are different for teenagers nowadays as technology is more advanced. We get instant info now because of technology. Things
just weren’t like that back then.
Why did you join the military? How old were you? It wasn’t my choice, but that’s the way it worked out. My ship was sent to Korea and I was on the HMCS Crusader at 19.
What do you want our generation to know? It’s important to remember what
happened in Korea. I encourage everyone to read up on it and learn about it.
What is one thing you learned from your experience? I learned to be disciplined, have good hygiene, and how to take orders. It can be really difficult to learn how to look after yourself. I matured a lot and learned how to
stand up for myself. I also obtained a lot of certificates.
How did your parents, friends, or significant other react to you joining the military? Mother was very upset. My father was very impressed.
If you had to do it all over again, would you make the same decisions? Yes, I
would do it again.Why is
Remembrance Day important to you? It’s important to
remember the fallen soldiers and to hope Canada doesn’t get involved with war again. Remember the
ones who sacrificed. Stop and think about
the friends who didn’t make it back. Enjoy the freedoms we have.

NATASHA FAUSTSPECIAL TO THE NEWS
I think we should have students interview the veterans next year so other kids can have the same experience that we had this year.
I learned that these people, just like us, went to war to fight for our freedom and sacrificed their lives. Many of them were our exact age when they signed up, which I found surprising.
When we were
interviewing the veterans, many showed powerful emotions when they were telling their stories. I could almost see the stories in their faces.
Remembrance Day is important to me because it’s important that I remember what they did for us. To keep on remembering each year how scared they were, and what they went through.
Natasha Faust, 16, is a student at VAST.

Student interviewers: Alex Boucha, Alexea Haberland, Makayla Anderson, Linda Planes, Natasha Faust
Where and when did you serve? Joined RCAF airforce in 1950 on his 18th birthday. Served until 1960. Shipped off to Ontario. First week: Korean War started.
Where did you grow up? Edmonton, Alta.
What were you like as a teenager? How are things different for us? I was raised in two World Wars. I was a very busy teen. I did papers and worked on a farm in the summer. Everyone worked. I wasn’t allowed into a bar until I joined the army. I also liked to have fun, and enjoyed the dances, especially the big bands.
Why did you join the war effort? How old were you? Was 18. Couldn’t join university. I had no money, so joined the military for education during the beginning of the Cold War.
What do you want our generation to know? You need to make sure there are no more wars. We have one Earth, one planet. Also to know about the Read the Feed program:
breakfast and story. What is one thing
you learned from your experience? It was the best education. I regretted not going and finishing school, so I did. I eventually taught electronics for three years in Ontario.
How did your parents, friends, or significant other react to you joining the war effort? I always did what I wanted to. My four
younger sisters sold all of my clothes because they thought I wouldn’t return.
If you had to do it all over again, would you make the same decisions? Yes, I would. I have no regrets. I got out and really enjoyed my life.
Why is Remembrance Day important to you? It’s important to remember the fallen. It’s important we don’t forget history.
