◆ COVER STORY

KATYA SLEPIAN/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Brittany Reynolds, who will MC grad ceremonies on Friday, was a mainstay on the rugby pitch during her tenure with the ADSS Armada.

Class of 2015 last of the ‘old ADSS’

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The last class to have walked through the doors of the old Alberni District Secondary School will be graduating from the new one this weekend.

“I thought it was a good transition,” said Brittany Reynolds, master of ceremonies for the graduation ceremony this Friday, June 26 at the AV Multiplex.

Switching over to the new facility gave her and the rest of the students a sense of newfound pride in their school.

“At the old high school, it was almost falling apart anyways

so there wasn’t the same level of respect as there is for this school now,” she said.

“It’s good because since we are the last group to really know that we can pass it onto the other generations to respect the school and leave a bit of ourselves.”

Reynolds, 18, who played rugby all through high school and tried her hand at cheerleading during her final year, will be directing the show on grad night.

“In Grade 9 I just thought it would be good to join something and our rugby team’s just one big family,” she said. “It was just something good to stick with and

I made a lot of good friends and I have a lot of good memories to look back on.”

With high school wrapping up, Reynolds plans to stick with rugby recreationally but is turning her sights to academics.

“I’m planning on working towards becoming a social worker,” she said. Reynolds plans on staying on Vancouver Island for her education, either in Nanaimo or Victoria.

“I think it’s just always been something that’s interested me. I like working with youth and kids a lot... I like making a difference.”[email protected]

Valedictorian Nolan Badovinac just as busy off wrestling mat

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Between wrestling, great grades, late French immersion and piano playing, it’s amazing that Alberni District Secondary School 2015 valedictorian Nolan Badovinac has even a moment to sit down and reminisce about it all.

“I have my Grade 7 piano certification with the Royal Conservatory of Music,” said Badovinac, who started playing when he was four.

He’s also headed to Simon Fraser University in September to study actuarial sciences.

“It’s a combination of math and business geared towards insurance and investments, stockbrokers—that sort of career.”

It’s a different side to the 17-year-old, who usually makes the news for his wrestling prowess.

That prowess on the mat gathers acclaim for good reason—Badovinac is a three-time national champion and recently committed to SFU’s wrestling team.

“You have to compete against the best if you want to be the best,” said Badovinac.

That’s what Badovinac expects to get at SFU. Unlike other Canadian

universities, it’s part of the NCAA and competes against American teams.

“They wrestle folk-style which is a little different than what we wrestle here. The Americans have their style which is only wrestled in the U.S. and we wrestle freestyle, which is

wrestled in the rest of the world.”

Competing in both styles gives Badovinac variety and prepares him well for his ultimate goal—the Olympics.

“The goal is to medal or even place at U21 worlds —I was second at the U21 nationals this year —and then after that I’d still be wrestling for another three years at SFU.”

It’s during those three years that he’ll get his shot at the Olympics.

“I’d be on the senior circuit and the guy who wins that is the guy who goes onto the senior worlds and

onto the Olympics.”While Badovinac is

set to study actuarial sciences at SFU, he’s ready to reconsider his options if the Olympics start to look like a real possibility.

“If it looks like I can make it in the Olympics then I’d probably stick with it.”

The backing behind all Badovinac’s success is a family that has bolstered him every step of the way.

“I have a really supportive family,” Badovinac said.

“As far as academics go it’s always been expected that you do well.”

The athleticism in the Badovinac family didn’t start with Nolan. “My dad was a really, really competitive softball player. I think he actually finished second in the world a couple of times playing for Victoria.”

Badovinac’s younger brother Aaron is also a wrestler of note at ADSS.

Badovinac started playing baseball and then transitioned to wrestling in middle school under the advice of James Messenger , currently the vice-principal of E.J. Dunn and heavily involved with wrestling in Alberni.

He hasn’t stopped wrestling since, no matter what else has been on his plate.

“It all just kind of fit.”

Flying club open house draws military aircraft from Comox

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The skies above the Alberni Valley will be filled with planes this Sunday, June 28 as the Alberni Flying Club hosts its open house.

“It’s to help make people aware of the airport and the facilities there,” said Alberni Flying Club president Chris Duncan.

But this year, the open house will be better than any before.

“This year the Royal Canadian Airforce is going to be setting up a static display with the CH-149 Cormorant helicopter and they’ll also be doing a fly-past with the CP-140 Aurora (maritime patrol) plane,” said Duncan.

The Cormorant

helicopter is one of two distinctive yellow and red aircraft 19 Wing uses for search and rescue all along the coast of B.C. (the other being the fixed-wing CT-115 Buffalo).

The four-engine grey Aurora is typically used for long-range patrol and reconnaissance missions and has for more than a decade also been tasked on

overseas missions.The flying club

has tried to get the airforce to bring in their planes for five years now, Duncan said, but this is the first time they’ve been successful.

“We’re pretty excited about that.”

The aviation arm of the Coulson Group will also be out in full force.

“Coulsons will be

putting up a display about some of the stuff they’re doing,” Duncan said.

But it’s not only the big, military planes that Alberni Valley residents should get excited about.

“As long as the weather’s good, we get a lot of airplanes coming in from all over the Lower Mainland and sometimes as far away as Washington State,” said Duncan. “So people can look at the different airplanes and see what’s here.”

Drag event safe for 2015: Surry

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Alberni Valley drag racer Dyan Lover is worried that the annual Thunder in the Valley drag racing event won’t be considered in any of the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District’s runway extension decisions.

But Alberni Valley Drag Racing Association president Bill Surry said the fate of this year’s race is secure.

“We have put a fortune into [the ACRD’s airport] infrastructure” yet that work isn’t acknowledged in the business case study, Lover said.

Regional district airport manager Mark Fortune said that conducting the annual summer drag race at the AVRA is still part of the plan, however, the configuration

may have to change if the extension is completed. Allowances would have to be made for the construction phase as well, he added.

Surry says the 2015 Thunder in the Valley event will go as planned.

“We have concerns, not knowing exactly what is happening at this point in time,” he said.

“We want to keep going and we’re not sure if we will be able to.”

The ACRD and the drag racing association have had preliminary talks about the extension proposal, Surry said. The AVDRA has also considered a new location but no concrete plans have been set, he added.

Tensions between the Alberni Valley Drag Racing Association and the airport started when the rubber was removed from the runway in May 2014 and again in March 2015, Lover said.

The first cleaning was conducted by an ACRD contractor while the second was done and paid for by Coulson Aircrane prior to bringing in their C-130, Fortune said.

“The runway’s surface, because we had such a mild winter or other unknown reasons, it had a really aggressive moss buildup and lichen/slime buildup so it was really slippery,” said Fortune.

Continued / A21

◆ WE CONTINUE with our coverage of the issues surrounding the runway expansion proposal at the regional airport.

◆ THE ACRD was expected to receive approval of the alternate approval process on Wednesday, June 24 after the News went to press. Follow the story online at www.albernivalleynews.com.

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

One year after the City of Port Alberni signed a 25-year lease with the Port Alberni Port Authority for a controversial waterfront lot, there has been no sign of industry on the site. So one city councillor says it’s time to void the lease.

Last year the port authority, acting as an agent for Canadian Alberni Engineering, signed a 25-year lease for Lots A and B on the former Alberni Plywood site, adjacent to Canal Beach. Part of that lease stated that industrial activity must occur on the lot within one year—and that deadline will be on July 1.

At the June 22 council meeting,

Coun. Chris Alemany introduced a notice of motion to provide 90-day notice of termination of the PAPA lease for lots A and B as of July 15, 2015.

Speaking after the meeting, Mayor Mike Ruttan said that the fate of the lease agree-ment will depend upon what PAPA brings to the table before July 1.

“It’s possible that they will bring something to us before July 1 that will be satisfactory to council,” said Ruttan.

“They have come forward with some

substantial plans for that site but at this point I’m not at liberty to talk about that.”

The original pre-approved plan was for PAPA to sub-lease the lot to Canadian Alberni Engineering.

However, CAE general manager Steve Dunagan said no lease has been signed yet and that the matter is “being

handled at a much higher level.”

CAE is owned by Ontario-based Russell Industries who did not return a call for comment by the News’ press time.

The port authority, which currently

holds the lease for waterfront Lot A and B, released a statement stating that “the Port remains focused on securing a tenant for these lots. As always we are working collaboratively with the city to achieve the shared goal.”

The city-PAPA lease agreement states that the industrial or marine commercial enterprise that must occur on the land by July 1, 2015 “does not include log salvage operations similar to those being undertaken on the land prior to the effective date of this lease.”

City manager Ken Watson confirmed that a similar log salvage operation as what is occurring on Lot A now would not

be sufficient economic activity to satisfy the lease requirements but “a log sort would be completely different than a log salvage. Different in scope, different in intention.”

Port authority director of public relations and business development Dave McCormick told the News in 2014 that “we have no intention of supporting a log sort. Our primary purpose is to facilitate shipping.”

Any plans for the site other than the pre-approved CAE proposal will have to be approved by council, Watson said.

The next council meeting after the July 1 deadline will be July [email protected]

Year-round burn ban considered

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A year-round ban on backyard burning might soon be coming to the city of Port Alberni.

“Our air quality data shows that there is an air quality problem in Port Alberni and backyard burning is one easily controllable source that we can work to address,” said Sarah Thomas of the Port Alberni Air Quality Council.

“Burning less is always better.”

“All the different pollutants cause different effects on human health, on animals, plants, our ecosystem,” said Ministry of Environment meteorologist Earle Plaine.

The AQC asked city council for a

year-round burning ban to expand the current summertime ban because air quality in the Alberni Valley decreases dramatically in the winter.

“During the warm season you have good dispersion, not a whole lot of sources,” said Plaine.

“But as soon as we enter the cold season we start to see a real change... the atmosphere can’t disperse the emissions as well as it can when it’s warm.”

Colder weather also comes with an increase in combustion sources, said Plaine.

According to a 2005 report, Plaine said, the province spent $167 million that year on health-care costs associated with poor air quality.

V ICTORIA – I’ve just spent two weeks viewing events

from the opposite side of Canada, in and around St. John’s Newfoundland. It’s the same country, but you wouldn’t know it sometimes.

Here on the West Coast, “kayaktivists” paddled around a Shell offshore oil drilling platform being serviced at Seattle, striking poses of resistance for the media from their petroleum-based watercraft.

Meanwhile at Bull Arm outside St. John’s, work continues on a massive “gravity-based structure” that will soon be drilling into the Hebron oilfield 350 km offshore. It will have living quarters and drill rig above and a tank with capacity for 1.2 million barrels of crude below.

Offshore oil has turned St. John’s into

a boomtown. With one industrial park nearing capacity on the edge of town, a second is under construction. Locals call it “Dannyland,” after its developer, former premier Danny Williams.

St. John’s Airport is buzzing with flights back and forth to Edmonton and Fort McMurray, and crew helicopters shuttling back and forth from offshore oil rigs. Tourism is picking up, with a new cross-Canada ad campaign and WestJet starting service to Dublin and London.

A foreign supplier won a contract for tankers to bring oil ashore. With no media-connected environmental groups to steer the subject to far-fetched disaster scenarios, debate in the Newfoundland and Labrador legislature turned to concerns about maintaining local

employment.Outside the city,

parallels with B.C. become evident. Tiny towns struggle to hang on as young people choose opportunity over isolation, and the only expansion is at church graveyards. While cities struggle with high housing and recreational property

costs, homes in remote areas are going for a song.

Up north in Labrador, a hydroelectric dam at Muskrat Falls is under construction. Its $8 billion estimated price tag is

in the same range as BC Hydro’s Site C project on the Peace River, which will part a sea of protesters and lawyers and move ahead this summer. Nalcor Energy, Newfoundland’s electrical utility, is dipping into contingencies in an effort to keep it on time and on budget.

Here on the Left Coast,

enviros and the Green Party rail against hydro as well as oil and gas, and of course you can’t even mention nuclear. Climate activism proceeds in a logical vacuum in these parts, as it often does in Europe.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper signed on to a farcical “carbon free in 85 years” pledge at the G7 meeting in Germany. But hey, it’s an election year, not a time for serious discussion of issues.

Imperial Oil’s Kearl oilsands mine at Fort McMurray has started production from its $9 billion second phase, with the help of many Newfoundlanders. Production continues to grow, heavy oil prices have surged with paving season, and large-scale liquefied natural gas export plans begin to take shape in B.C.

With the legislature about to be recalled to endorse the Petronas-led LNG export project, Premier Christy Clark has assembled a climate action team.

EDITORIAL

Labour’s lost in high prices

Glenn Sollitt and the federal Green Party have got this one right. Almost.

Sollitt, the Green Party candidate for the Courtenay-Alberni riding, sent a letter to the editor out last week, extolling the value of Vancouver Island sawmills. More accurately, Sollitt was railing against raw-log exports.

Approximately 480,000 cubic metres of raw logs were exported to overseas sawmills from

Port Alberni last year.Undoubtedly, those raw

logs come back to us in the form of manufactured goods. The countries that buy those logs are the ones that get the benefit of the jobs.

We believe Vancouver Island companies would do more with our

resources if there was a profit to be had. We cannot expect companies to lose money or break even just for the sake of some principal. Profit is not a dirty word.

So, why are we shipping so many raw logs? Our guess is we have priced ourselves out of the market. We cannot compete with companies in other countries that pay their workers much less than what is expected here. To make a chair out of that raw log, it may cost $100 here, $10 in some foreign country.

The decision to ship raw logs rather than manufacturing products here is not about corporate greed. It’s fairly simple math.

Candidates from the Green Party or the NDP may say they are against raw-log exports, but they are loathe to face the real issue, the elephant in the room: the high cost of labour in this country. Weeks of holidays, benefits, $20/hour or more, 7.5/hour shifts — this is why we have to ship raw logs overseas.

These wages and benefits are the result of hard-fought battles over the years and those jobs continue to contribute to the high quality of life we enjoy in this country. But they also eliminate us from participation in some sectors.

Mailbag: Feedback on airport expansion and drought conditions

‘Drought’ means ‘dry’!

To the Editor,Every morning

before work I set out on a walk along Faber Road and through the trails that connect it to the logging road.

Every morning I think to myself how lucky I am to have these trails in my backyard. I try to ignore the flagging tape that mark the beautiful trees for logging in the near future, and I listen to the birds and enjoy my walk in peace.

This morning it was more than just the reminder of devastating logging that threatened these beautiful woods. As I walked along Faber, a car passed me going probably 20 kilometres over the speed limit (but that is a subject for another day), and the driver flicked his cigarette butt out the window.

Immediately the peace and quiet of my walk was replaced with rage. I ran quickly to where the butt hit the ditch and stomped it out. It was lying there, in a pile of dry grass, still smoking. It was still burning from when its inconsiderate owner finished his last drag.

What part of drought doesn’t he understand? All you have to do is look at the surrounding mountains and you will see this is not your average spring on Vancouver Island.

Walk through the forest and you will hear the crunch of dry ground and moss that usually is reserved for August. The lake is prematurely low and warm, our mountains have no snow. And we haven’t had a significant rainfall in a very long time.

According to the Wildfire Management Branch in B.C., about 30 per cent of the nearly 2,000 wildfires burning in 2013 were caused by people. We can’t control Mother Nature, but we can control our own actions.

Walking home this morning, I noticed discarded cigarette butts lining the edge of the road in a surprisingly high number. So, I think maybe we need to clear something up for irresponsible smokers out there—discarded cigarette butts cause forest fires.

Actually, let me correct that. Irresponsible smokers discarding their cigarette butts cause forest fires.

Your car comes with an ashtray; I suggest you use it. Next time I might not be walking along at just the right time to stomp out your smoking butt.

Airport not just for one person

To the Editor,Re: Airport runway

expansion.Although the

Coulson Group is currently the major user at the Alberni Valley Regional Airport, it is extremely short-sighted of those opposing expansion of the airport to say the money invested would only benefit Coulsons.

Aside from the increase in jobs that the proposed airport improvements would create directly at Coulson’s, there will no doubt be a spinoff of job creation/boost to businesses in town as a result of those positions.

A longer runway, along with GPS, would enable commercial airlines to land here, further benefiting others than just Coulsons.

Another thing: proposed food trucks on Centennial Pier? In my opinion this should not happen. There are so many

food options down at Harbour Quay already, most of which rely on the extra summer traffic to get them through the quieter winter months.

Most pay taxes all year and stay open all year. I do realize competition is a fact of doing business, but...

Also, during the summer months there is a strong afternoon wind down there and any umbrellas, product, etc. that is outside on the pier is going to get blown away. Anyone who has been to the outdoor market at Victoria Quay during the summer (which is a wonderful idea), either as a vendor or supporter, will attest to how hard it is to hold down their tents, table and products.

A thought on the Five Acre Shaker: if it’s the last year there, no problem, as it’s benefitting at-risk youth. Unlike the Fall Fair and Salmon Festival however, it’s on until at least 2 a.m. each night with lyrics that are offensive to many ears, especially the elderly.

Hopefully the large police and fire presence on site will keep tire-squealers and others who give the event a bad

reputation, under control.

Airport benefit or make-work?

To the Editor,Should Port Alberni

taxpayers fund make-work projects?

Years ago, firemen doubled as paramedics. Their response time and effectiveness hasn’t improved since the government doubled the bureaucracy and added a million-dollar building.

Los Angeles firemen double as summer lifeguards to cut city costs while our costs double.

When a maintenance contractor sets off a home security alarm, our Cadillac emergency service sends paramedics, firemen and police.

If airport expansion is deemed a worthy make-work project, will city and rural homeowners contribute and will annual user cost and rents repay investment, or is this corporate welfare?

Should we have a referendum on this and on shedding the McLean Mill yoke to pay for this?

representatives from industry, First Nations, local governments and a couple of professional protesters for good measure.

They have an absurdly short deadline to recommend changes to B.C.’s token carbon tax, as gasoline consumption returns to pre-tax levels despite continued high pump prices.

In St. John’s, another long, cold winter has finally loosened its

grip after piling snow to doorknob levels. Every street in sight is being patched and repainted.

The debate about new energy supplies has a more serious tone in Newfoundland. The last elected premier, Kathy Dunderdale, lost her job in the wake of winter power blackouts.

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.As it is, there are many parts, but one body.If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

A new value-added wood product is set to be exported from the Alberni Valley this fall, Cantimber Biotech director of project development and research Michael Liu said.

“The fuel we’re using at Cantimber is logging residue from the Alberni Valley,” said Liu.

Between 50,000-55,000 cubic metres of wood waste will be collected from 10 cut blocks in the Alberni Valley by local contractor Brad Berry and turned into activated charcoal in their new facility on Port Authority land, Liu said during an open house Tuesday at the AV Multiplex.

The brand new company—registered in May 2014— will set up shop in two warehouses near the corner of Bruce Street

and Harbour Road on Port Alberni Port Authority land.

According to Liu, equipment will arrive soon and the company hopes to be in operation in September. The activated charcoal will initially be shipped to Asia but Liu said that Canada may end up being a possible destination for their product.

The plant will create 20-25 jobs that Liu said the company will try to fill locally. Trucks will transport the activated charcoal to Duke Point in Nanaimo.

While neither Liu nor PAPA director of business development and public relations Dave McCormick would specify the “confidential” details of the lease, both stated that rigorous environmental protections were written into the [email protected]

“It was a big benefit for us.”

Lover doesn’t believe that the rubber, which she said made the race dangerous for the faster cars at Thunder in the Valley, needed to be removed.

“They’ve left it alone for 13 years, why do it twice in one year? I can’t see why they can’t just leave it alone. It’s not broken.”

Fortune said that when he joined the ACRD as airport

superintendent in 2013, he found the condition of the rubber buildup on the runway to be “unacceptable,” citing 3/8s of an inch of flaking rubber that could make landings more difficult as well as clog a plane’s engine, leaving the ACRD liable.

Fortune said the rubber is now scheduled to be removed every five to seven years.

Alberni Valley Bulldogs’ forward Tyler Povelofskie is retiring from junior hockey to pursue a post-secondary opportunity.

Povelofskie has enrolled in the heavy duty/ transport mechanic program at Thompson Rivers University.

“This was not a decision made lightly on my part,” said

Povelofskie, who was injured partway through last season.

“I would like to take the time to sincerely thank the Alberni Valley Bulldogs organization for the opportunities and experiences that I gained last season,” he added.

Povelofskie missed a large portion of last season with a serious skate-caused

laceration but worked hard to get back in the lineup.

“Tyler has been seeking this opportunity to become a heavy duty mechanic for a few years now but it didn’t work out with the hockey schedule,” said Alberni Valley Bulldogs head coach and general manager Kevin Willison.

“Now with a shop

giving him the opportunity to have his education paid for, it is like a scholarship to him so we wish Tyler all the best moving forward into the new chapter in his life,” added Willison.

Povelofskie said he will take many good memories with him as he transitions away from playing hockey.

“I would also like to thank coaches Kevin

(Willison) and Adam (Hayduk) for their endless commitment to coaching, Tom (McEvay) for his education advice and expertise, Lyle and Kathy Pitts for opening their home as billet parents and, last but definitely not least, the community, volunteers and fans that support the Bulldogs win, lose, or draw.”

The Alberni Golf Club ladies’ club golfers had a wonderful time at the ladies nine- and 18-hole scramble. Plenty of sunshine and lots of fun.

There were 45 ladies including 10 guests who participated. The winning team with 38 was Janice Cross, Marj Dufour and Kathy Toms.

Winning a prize for the lowest team putts, a total of 12, was Laura Lee Edgell, Sandra Simpson and Kathy White.

Marta Williamson won the special prize. After our nine holes of golf we enjoyed each others’ company over coffee and muffins. Very enjoyable.

In the words of Bob Hope: “I’ve been playing the game so long that my handicap is in Roman numerals.”

THE ARTSTHE ARTS ART RAVE / Celebrating art in pictures. A26

Four decades after starting her career with the quirky folk band Pied Pumkin, Shari Ulrich is still going strong.

The 2014 Canadian Folk Music Awards songwriter of the year for 2014 will perform at Char’s Landing on Argyle Street at Fifth Avenue on Saturday, June 27 at 8 p.m.

Ulrich’s latest release “Everywhere I Go” (engineered and produced by her daughter Julia Graff, also an accomplished musician) is her eighth solo album, and the 21st of her career. She brings a special warmth, humour and honesty to her songwriting and solo performance along with her wide range of instrumental skills on piano, guitar, violin and mandolin.

Tickets are $20 in advance ($25 at the door). For more information, please call 778-421-2427.
