ISOTOPES RIP ROUND ROCK, 8-3: For the third straight night, the Albuquerque Isotopes pounded out double-digit hits en route to a third straight comfortable victory over the Round Rock Express, 8-3 on a sensational Saturday night at Isotopes Park. Once again, the Isotopes came out hot, scoring a run in the bottom of the first when Ivan De Jesus Jr. led off with a walk, advanced to second on a single by Joe Becker, and scored on a base hit by Jerry Sands to give Albuquerque a quick, 1-0 lead. After both teams traded runs in the second to make the score 2-1 ‘Topes, the home team surged ahead further in the sixth. Kyle Russell started the rally by smashing a solo home run to right, his first Triple-A dinger, to extend the lead to 3-1. Damaso Espino then followed with a single, advanced to second on a groundout, and scored on a base hit by De Jesus to give the Isotopes a 4-1 edge. A relatively tight game would get blown open in the seventh, when Becker led off the frame with a single and scored all the way from first on a double to center by Jay Gibbons that made the score 5-1. Gibbons then promptly scored on a double by Russ Mitchell, who himself was then picked up by a single from Sands, increasing the Albuquerque advantage to 7-1. Russell capped the inning’s scoring with first Triple-A double, plating Sands and giving the ‘Topes a comfortable 8-1 cushion. The Express would plate two in the eighth, but it was too little, too late, as the ‘Topes cruised to an 8-3 triumph. ELY ONE MORE TIME: The final start at Isotopes Park of 2011 goes to right-hander John Ely, who takes the mound looking to rebound from a tough outing in his last start on August 23 vs. Memphis. In that start, Ely lasted just three innings, allowing five runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out four in an 8-1 ‘Topes defeat to the Redbirds. After starting out 3-1 in the Duke City, Ely has dropped each of his last two starts in The Lab, with his last home victory coming back on July 8 vs. Nashville. All that being said, the right-hander will close the 2011 season having recorded one of the most dominant pitching performances in the history of Isotopes Park, a complete-game gem he tossed against division-leading Reno on May 22 when allowed just one run on three hits while walking one and striking out seven. ‘TOPES ON A ROLL: After dropping four straight during the first half of the homestand, the Isotopes have reeled off three wins in a row, their longest winning streak since taking three in a row from Fresno from August 13-15. The last time Albuquerque won three in a row at home was actually part of a four-game home winning streak from July 21-23, when the Isotopes swept a doubleheader from Oklahoma City before taking the first two games of a series against New Orleans. Making it even sweeter is the fact the ‘Topes are doing it against their arch nemesis. The Isotopes are the first team all season to beat Round Rock three games in a row. LAST DANCE: Tonight will be the last Isotopes game at Isotopes Park this season but the 2011 campaign will stretch one more week with four games in Memphis be- fore the season wraps up with four games in Round Rock over Labor Day Weekend. All-time, the Isotopes are 5-3 in the last game of a season at The Lab and have won their last two home finales. This will be the third time the ‘Topes have closed out the home slate with the Round Rock Express, with wins in each of the two prior occa- sions (2005 and 2009). SEE YOU AT THE CHAMPIONSHIP: Tonight will be the final home game for the Isotopes, but it won’t be the final game at Isotopes Park of 2011. On Tuesday, September 20, Isotopes Park will be the site of the Triple-A National Championship Game, pitting the playoff champion of the Pacific Coast League against the playoff champion of the International League. The game is merely the centerpiece of an en- tire day of fun, including a pre-game autograph session with Dodgers legends Steve Garvey, Ron Cey, and Bill Russell, a fleece blanket giveaway courtesy of Sandia Resort, and a post-game fireworks show! BECKER’S A WRECKER: The hottest bat on the Isotopes belongs to Joe Becker, who has been making the most of some added playing time. On the current homes- tand, Becker is batting .542 (13x24) with five runs scored, a double, two triples, and two RBI in eight games. PLAYER AWARDS!: Before today’s game, the Isotopes will give out their annual player awards, which include Most Valuable Player, Pitcher of the Year, Best Defen- sive Player, Mr. Hustle, PNM Power Hitter of the Year, Most Community-Minded Player, and Fan Favorite. All of the awards are chosen by the Isotopes themselves except Most Community-Minded, which is determined by the Isotopes front office, and Fan Favorite, which is determined by fan vote. TODAY’S START: Righty John Ely makes the last start at Isotopes Park this season coming off a tough outing in his last start vs. Memphis on August 23, when he allowed five runs on eight hits in a season-low three innings while walking one and striking out four in an 8-1 ‘Topes loss.

Had a short stay with the Dodgers after being recalled on August 1 and was inserted into the Los Angeles bullpen, but did not appear in any games. Optioned back to Albuquerque on August 7.

Won three straight starts from July 3 to July 17, posting a 1.89 ERA (4 ER / 19.0 IP) in that span. Had a brief call-up to the Dodgers that saw him make his first Major League relief ap-pearance (and the second relief outing at all since his first professional year in 2007 at Rookie-level Great Falls) on June 5 at Cincinnati. Ely entered the game in relief of Chad Billingsley in the sixth inning with the Dodgers leading 9-4 and worked three innings, allowing two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out four in a 9-6 Dodgers win. If he had worked the ninth, Ely would have been in line to earn his first Major League save, but Josh Lindblom pitched the ninth for LA.

Had a dominating nine-inning, complete-game win vs. Reno on May 22, just the 10th nine-inning complete game thrown by an Isotope at home in franchise history and the first nine-inning complete game in Ely’s career. Ely allowed one run (on a Cody Ransom homer) on just three hits while walking one and striking out seven in a 3-1 ‘Topes win. Both of the right-hander’s first two wins came in complete-game performances.

Nearly threw a no-hitter in the second game of a doubleheader at Iowa on April 20. Ely took a no-hitter into the seventh and final inning, striking out the first two batters he faced before giving up a double to Marquez Smith. The right-hander got the next batter to pre-serve the complete-game shutout, the first of his career. Made a spot start for the Dodgers on April 10 at San Diego where he allowed four runs on six hits in 5.2 innings while walk-ing three and striking out five in a 7-2 loss to the Padres. With the defeat, Ely had dropped each of his last six Major League decisions dating back to last year.

2010: Rookie right-hander made his Major League debut, going 4-10 with a 5.49 ERA in 18 starts over three stints with the Dodgers... struck out 76 and walked just 40 in 100.0 innings… had his contract purchased from Albuquerque on April 28 and made his Major League debut that day, allowing five runs over 6.0 innings and taking the loss in the Dodgers’ 7-3 defeat at New York (NL).. picked up his first big league victory on May 11 at Arizona, allowing two runs over 6.0 innings in the Dodgers’ 13-3 win… won both of his next two starts against Houston and Detroit for a season-long three-game winning streak and finished the month of May with a 3-1 record and a 2.18 ERA (8 ER / 33.0 IP) in five starts... made six straight quality starts from May 6 to June 1, which were the most con-secutive quality starts for a Dodger rookie since Hideo Nomo’s 12 straight from May 17 to July 20, 1995... started his career without allowing a home run in his first 50.1 innings over eight games, which was the longest run by a Dodger pitcher to start a career since Fernando Valenzuela went 82.2 frames without allowing a big fly from September 15, 1980 to the third inning of a game vs. Montreal on May 14, 1981... faced 89 consecutive batters with-out allowing a walk between April 28 and May 22... was the longest streak for any Dodger rookie since Dave Stewart had a 93-batter streak in 1981... lost his final five decisions of the season, posting an 11.01 ERA (31 ER / 25.1 IP) over his final six starts... ranked among the NL rookie leaders in starts (18, T-5th), innings (100.0, 8th), strikeouts (76, T-10th) and opponents’ batting average (.276, 8th)... was 5-4 with a 6.22 ERA (61 ER / 100.0 IP) in 13 starts with Albuquerque.

PERSONAL/MISCELLANEOUS: John Ely... attended Miami (Ohio) University... went 26-7 with a 3.07 ERA in his three-year collegiate career... ranks second in school history with 284 career strikeouts and tied for fifth with 26 wins... in 2007 as a junior, was a unanimous first-team all-Mid-American Conference selection... as a sophomore, tied for the Miami University club lead with eight victories and earned All-MAC honors... in 2005 as a freshman, named All-MAC second team, tying for the conference lead with 10 wins and leading the league with 108 strikeouts... tossed a league-high six complete games, in-cluding four consecutive starts from March 23 to April 17... also selected to the Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team... compiled a 27-5 career record at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, including one perfect game.
