*P3a. (Description)

Decorative cut stone quoins accent the squared front porch openings; cut stone also supplies the material for a low adjacent wall on the south side of the porch as well as for the chimney in front. Wood shutters adorn the second story on either side of the front chimney. Entrance to the house is up three stone steps to the squared porch with wrought iron gate in front and rail off the south facing portion. The beautiful wood and leaded glass front door has multi-paned leaded glass side lights. Original wrought iron and leaded glass lights hang by the entrance. In 1997, skylights were inserted in the roof.

A 1925 gazebo stands to the right of the residence. A six car garage with maid's quarters/apartments appears along the alley in the back. Originally, a two car garage, two garages were added in the 1930s to accommodate LaMotte's daughters' automobiles, and two more were added in 1997, along with an adjacent lap pool. The structure resembles the main residence with its mock thatched roof, half timbered and shingled second story, and multi-paned wood sash casement windows. A third story office/bedroom for Mr. LaMotte with outdoor staircase and rooftop belvedere was added in the late 1930s on the east side at the rear.

Walter Anderson handled the original landscaping according to daughter, Margery D'atri. Some mature trees exist from the 1920s.

U.S.D. Professor, Ray Brandes, deemed this house historically significant in his 1982 Bankers Hill historical survey. M. Wayne Donaldson and Ione Stiegler identified this horne in their 1995-96 "Historical Greater Mid-City San Diego Preservation Strategy" as an "individually significant resource which is independently significant for its distinctive design or physical characteristics and does not require a contextual setting to derive a level of significance."

Alfred D. LaMotte, involved in the music business from the turn of the twentieth century through 1951, served as president and general manager of the Thearle Music Company at 640 Broadway, and headed several national and local music organizations during that time. Thearle Music Company, the oldest music store .in San Diego and the 15th largest music store in the nation, provided everything the music lover and patron could want, from musical instruments to music lessons and recordings. LaMotte emphasized and put into practice the belief that a music store should sustain a vital relationship with every musical event and interest in the city, and he made his store an information bureau pertaining to everything mus~cal. A free box office was maintained for the sale of tickets to all musical performances, and free musical recitals were frequently given in recital hall on the premises. {See Continuation Sheet)

* 810 (Significance)

Alfred D. LaMotte, a self-made entrepreneur, and his wife, Ethel, purchased this property from Mark Schoenbrun in 1924, while they lived up the street at 3518 3"' Avenue in the Hillcrest/Bankers Hill area. Mr. ~aMotte hired architectural designer, Ralph E. Hurlburt, and builder, Charles H. Tifal, to erect their two story Tudor Revival horne on this site which was completed on May 29, 1925. According to LaMotte's daughter, Margery D'atri, this architectural team was selected because "Hurlburt was highly respected and a friend of her father's." Hurlburt and Tifal planned many beautiful homes in the Mission Hills, Marston Hills, Kensington, and Bankers Hill areas, and published a booklet, "Distinctive Homes," c1926, which included a picture of this house and other residences of Spanish Eclectic and Tudor Revival design. A number of their dwellings have been historically designated such as the Byers house at 4230 Arguello, the Wonder House of Stone at 4386 Adams Avenue, and the Burton/Telford house at 1271 Brookes Terrace.

Hurlburt's Tudor Revival homes of the mid to late 1920s equal or surpass the work of licensed architects in their creativity. It's unfortunate that his November 22, 1942 obituary only mentioned his involvement in the real estate and insurance business in San Diego and neglected his architectural contributions.

Charles Tifal, his building partner, at least, was credited as a general contractor in his obituary of February 14, 1968. Their "Distinctive Homes" booklet stated, "The firms of Ralph E. Hurlburt, 'Architectural Designing, Real Estate and Financing,' and Charles H. Tifal, 'Builder,' while operating individually and separately are, in a sense, a single organization striving to express through the homes they design and build, the very personality of the individual by whom they are at the time employed. Working in the belief that to design and build something that is correct and honest is, after all, no more expensive than that which is wrong and that it is simply a matter of thought and study - proving this conclusively in every instance - we profit in the knowledge that each client is a satisfied client and recommends us unquestionably."

According to his daughter, Alfred LaMotte was a very satisfied client and his sturdy Tudor Revival home in which he lived with his wife and daughters, Frances and Margery, until his death in 1951, gave him great pride and joy. From the half timbered shingle siding of the second story to the cut stone chimney and entrance surround with adjacent low wall to the multi-paned leaded glass windows and front door with delicate sidelights, the house exuded quality and beauty. The mock thatched roof, fashioned by Samuel Cabot's Creosote Stained Shingles and Shakes as advertised in their booklet, and the delicate wrought iron lighting fixtures, gate and balustrade, also contributed to the richness of the dwelling. The gazebo to the right of the house and the period garage in the rear reinforced the Tudor Revival styling.

Alfred D. LaMotte, a native of Glen Ellen, California, born on December 20, 1880, received his formal education from Mount Tamalpais Military Academy at San Rafael, then Berkeley High School. The world of music lured him at an early age into a career which commenced around the turn of the twentieth century with the management of the Benjamin Curtaz & Son music store in San Francisco. In 1912, after his marriag.e to Ethel Marion Neilson, a Mills College graduate from San Francisco, he moved to San Diego where he bought the Thearle Music Company, the oldest music business in the area, which originated in 188-7- as---t-h9-Geo.r;ge---Bi-JOkB-l--Gompany. ---In -1-901, --E-r-nest- Thearle haEl pureh-ased the-stcore---from Birkel, changed the name to the Thearle Music Company, and possessed it until his health failed in 1910. The business drifted without a head until 1912 when LaMotte acquired it. At that time, F. H. Thearle of Chicago was president of the company and

LaMotte became the vice president and manager. Under LaMotte's guidance, the business grew steadily. In 1912, the store had between 8 and 10 employees; by 1922, there were between 35 and 4 0 employees, and it emerged as the largest music store in Southern California. Thearles handled the goods and represented some of the foremost factories in the world, including William Knabe & Co. pianos, the Gulbranson Co.- player pianos, Vase & Sons of Boston, Kohler & Campbell of New York, and the Victor and other talking machine makers. Between 1913 and 1921, 16,000 sq. ft. of floor space was added. LaMotte rose to the position of president and general manager of Thearles and took Harry Callaway on as his vice-president.

By 1947, the employee-owned store was the oldest music store in San Diego and the 15th largest in the United States. That year, LaMotte spent $100,000 to double the store's frontage on Broadway and remodel the ground floor and mezzanine. He extended the store front east to 7th Avenue after the acquisition of 30,000 more sq. ft. of space occupied by three stores at 7th and Broadway. The store now had 26 studios on the 3~ floor which served 1200 San Diego children each week and a staff of 40 music teachers. Thearles had a stock of 125 pianos, 50,000 records, and 75 persons were employed there. It was devoted to the retail merchandising of pianos, organs, radios, records, musical instruments, sheet music, and other equipment and supplies for the music lover.

LaMotte was also active in associations connected to the music industry. He served as president of the San Diego Philharmonic Orchestral Society, president and director of, the National Association of Music, and was regarded as one of the outstanding men in the music trades of the U.S .A. Deeply concerned about civic improvement and business in general, LaMotte was president and director of the Merchants Association of San Diego, president and director the Rotary Club, treasurer and director of the Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the University Club, Cuyamaca Club, Scottish Rite and Al Bahr Temple, and the San Diego Rowing Club. An avid outdoorsman, he excelled at trap shooting and was honored as one of California's foremost trap shooters. He won many trophies and titles in competitive shooting in the sta:e. He loved fishing and was also captain of the San Diego Golf Club.

His death on September 24, 1951, at the age of 70, made the front page of the San Diego Union. The article extolled LaMotte's many contributions to the music industry and San Diego. In fact, during his time in San Diego from 1912 to 1951, LaMotte found mention in all the major biographical works produced such as Heilbron, McGrew, and Who's Who in San Diego in 1936, which attests to his importance here.

Frank w. Seifert, associated with Cypress View Mortuary, and his wife, Bessie, bought the house in September 1953 and sold it to Dr. Malcolm B. and Dorothy Coutts in November 1953. Dr. Coutts, a native of Ontario, Canada, and graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, received his medical degree from the University of Toronto with postgraduate training in orthopedics at Columbia University. He worked 30 years with the Orthopedic Medical Group and later Sharp Me~orial Hospital, after a military career where he served as a field surgeon under Gen. George Patton in World War II. An avid bicyclist, Dr. Coutts rode daily and made several treks ·throughout the country and abroad. He resided at this address until his death in 1993 at the age of 91.

Alfred D. LaMotte References

ALFRED D. LA MoTTE, a native son of California, has played a very ·influential part in the business and artistic life of San Diego for the past ten years. He is vice president and manager of Sq.n Diego's oldest music house, the Thearle Music Company at 64D-644 Broadway, a store for everything needed. It has also become in many respects a general musical center of the city. .

Mr. La Motte was born at Glen Ellen; Sonoma County, December · 20, 1880, son of Alfred Victor and Susan (Fornhals) La Motte. His father, who died at San Jose, California, in 1920, was distinguished as a naturalist, and was one of the foremost authorities on fish and other aquatic life in this country. During the eighties he was employed by. the J\1exican Government to explore l\1exican waters in general scientific research. Many of his articles on fish propagation and fish life were published and were accepted as a basis for Governmental procedure in the conservation of these water resources. The late· JYir. La Motte came to CalifOrnia in the early fifties from Wilmington, Delaware, and. was related to the noted Dupont family of Wilmington. The wife of Alfred Victor La Motte was a native of Germany, and was brought to the United States when six months old. She and her husband were married in Sonoma City in 1870, and she died at San Jose in 1906. Their two sons and three daughters are still living, Alfred D. being the youngest and only representative of the family in San Diego County.

Both his father and mother were cultured and college bred people, and his education was carefully supervised. Until he was fourteen he had private instruction in his home at Glen Ellen. He then entered the Mount Tamalpais Military Academy at San Rafael, subsequently attended

' the Berkeley High School, and after his education was employed for i a time by the State Board of Trade at San Francisco, was also connected • with the hardware and lumber business in that city and established his

first connection with his present business as secretary of the Ross P. Curtice Company, general music goods merchants at Lincoln, Nebraska. Later beginning in 1904, he was for about eight years manager of the music store of the Benjamin Curtaz & Son at San Francisco.

Mr. La Motte came to San Diego from San Francisco in 1912. The Thearle Music Company is the oldest established house of its kind in San Diego, and has had a continuous history since 1887. As originally established it was the George Birkel Company, and the good will of this business was sold to Mr. Ernest Thearle in 1901. Mr. Thearle continued active until a general breakdown of health in 1910, which obliged him to retire. For nearly three years the business drifted along without a he.ad, until Mr. La Motte acquired an interest and took the management in 1913. Mr. Thearle died in 1918. The president of the company is Mr. F. H. Thearle of Chicago, while Mr. La Motte is manager and vice president and Lily E. Burton, secretary and treasurer. When Mr. La Motte came to San Diego in 1912 this store had between eight and ten employes. The business has increased fivefold since then, and now employ between thirty-five and forty persons and is the largest institntion of its kind in Southern California. HE firms of RALPH E. HURLBURT, "Architectural Designing, Real Estate and Financing," and CHARLES H. TrFAL, "Builder,'' while operating individually ahd separately are, in a sense, a single organization striving to express throu!lh the homes they design and build, the very personality of the individual by whom they are at the time employed.

Wmcking in the belief that to design and build something that is correct and honest is, after all, no more expensive than that "[hich is wrong and that it is simply a matter of thought and study-proving this conclusively in every instance--we profit in the knowledge that each client is a satisfied client and recommends us unquestionably.

In offering ,the services of Ralph E. Hurlburt, Charles H. Tifal, and R. L. Frank, designer, the client profits not only by a tremendous buying power but by the knowledge and experience of skilled draughtsmen, mechanics, decorators and craftsmen -paying a persentage of profit no greater than is asked by any builder of good repute, and of additional interest is the fact that no charge, is made for complete plans and specifications.
