We try to select musicals that appeal to a variety of ages. This year is no exception. Our young children and their parents will all be familiar with "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (January 9 & 10). On Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, the musical "Hairspray" will combine a great story and music along with a powerful message about race relations (January 16 & 17). Then on January 23 & 24, we will hear music from "Purlie." This musical is set in the south, at a time when Jim Crowe laws were still in effect, and focuses on the effort to emancipate the cotton workers. This sermon series will end with the well-known and well-loved "The Sound of Music" (January 30/31). Every week, we will hear wonderful music and the message that encourages us to connect what we believe with how we behave – or in other words, to "practice what we preach." Blessings, Rev. Join Asbury member and seminary professor, Jeanne Hoeft, Ph.D., on Sunday, January 31 and February 7, at 10 a.m. in Hager Hall, to explore the answer. Dr. Hoeft will lead us in learning more about the realities surrounding gun violence in the U.S. and discuss the role of faith and the church in reducing gun violence. Dr. Hoeft will share some of her research on violence, presenting facts about the use of guns, the prevalence of gun violence, and the characteristics of shooters and victims. The class will explore the meaning of guns in the US, especially in rural communities, and the various sides of the gun control debates from a theological rather than constitutional perspective. RSVP to Ashley Cheung, [email protected], if you or your class would like to participate.

Practicing What We Preach Dear Friends,

This will be our 4th year to celebrate "The Gospel on Broadway" as we look at the way stories and songs of different musicals connect with our faith story.

Every week, we will hear wonderful music and the message that encourages us to connect what we believe with how we behave – or in other words, to "practice what we preach."

Blessings, Rev. Gayla Rapp

Altar Flowers If you would like

to sponsor altar flowers a weekend in 2016, please sign up using the calendar by the Chapel. People do this as a special way to celebrate, remember, honor, people or events in their life. Flowers are $50, and you can take them home or have them sent to a homebound member.

We have partnered with Village Flower Company to make these beautiful arrangements.

Welcome, Kim! Asbury is happy to announce that Kim Maddox will be joining the staff in the Business

Administrator role, starting Tuesday, January 5. Kim is originally from Roanoke, VA, and received her degree in accounting from Oral Roberts University. For the past 20 years, Kim has worked in churches (with Wesleyan Tradition) in accounting and business administrator roles. She currently lives in Overland Park with her husband, and has three children.

We would also like to thank Sharon Kochan for stepping in during this transition. She has been a tremendous help, and will stay on while Kim gets acclimated.

New Year. New You?! Lose weight? Check. Get more Exercise? Check. Eat Healthier? Check. During the first week of 2016,

many of us will take a moment to create “resolutions” we hope to keep for the New Year. What if, during 2016, every Asbury friend “resolved” to grow in faith through intentional faith formation opportunities each Sunday morning?

Connectional Ministries is actively planning several incredible short-term Sunday School opportunities for the winter and spring. Each short-term opportunity will meet in Hager Hall, will be taught by a United Methodist clergyperson who is connected with Asbury, and passionate about their particular topic of interest. ALL ARE WELCOME! If you or your weekly Sunday School class would like to RSVP to one or more of these special opportunities, please email Ashley Cheung, [email protected].

• “Gun, Fear and Faith” with Rev. Jeanne Hoeft, Ph.D., on Sunday, January 31 & February 7

• “Lent 201” with Rev. Jim Darby begins on Sunday, February 14, through Sunday, March 13

• “How Do Theological Worlds Collide with The Gospels?” with Rev. Nick Warner begins on

Sunday, April 10, through Sunday, May 1

Special Tax-Free IRA Gifts For those age 70½ and older, it is once again possible to make tax-favored charitable gifts from traditional and Roth IRA accounts. For more information about this, please call Dave Rybolt or Ashley Cheung at Asbury, 913-432-5573.

Memorial Garden Thank you for your continued support of the Asbury Memorial

Garden. If you would like to donate and sponsor a month in 2016, sign up on the calendar by the Chapel.

In 2015, Liz and Bob Grimes sponsored October in memory of all their departed Asbury friends. Cindy and John Ballard celebrated their grandchildren, Will and Caroline Ballard, with a donation in November. In December, Eva and Bud Shepherd gave to the fund in honor of their great grandchildren, Garrett, Dane, and Juniper.

If you are interested in putting your “green thumb” to use or would like to order cards or prints, please contact Kathie White, 913-362-5827.
