Alive Project Sanitation System

Non traditional sanitation system (low cost) which is implemented by Alive project in the villages is one of the useful & vital project components that has many development aspects.

Environmental & health aspects :

-   Avoiding the environmental pollution and eradicating epidemic

diseases.

Social aspects

- Strengthening the concepts of participation and volunteering in the

favour of the village & linking the families with the government.

Economic aspect

-   Investing the human power & creating temporary job opportunities

through the project.

-  Providing households with quality sanitation services with a total

cost of 1000 EGP per the household.

villages

Treatment stages consists of two stages :-

•Initial treatment

•The final treatment

Page 6: Alive project sanitation system

(1) Initial treatment

The septic tank is considered as the main and first stage of the initial treatment , where consists of three rooms. The first room is the retention room, where the treatment depends on keeping of water & organic items in it from 3 to 5 days which is the necessary period for the work of anaerobic bacteria to analyze the solid substance to move the water to the last two rooms which are used as up flow gravel filter to filter the water coming from the primary treatment room and complete the treatment operation by forming bacterial medium around the filter gravels which carries out breaking the organic loads in the water coming from the first room.

(2) Final Treatment Stages

After completion of the filtering in the up flow gravel filter , the initially treated water goes through a natural descent networks to the main line of the village then to the final stage of treatment, which goes through the following two stages:

Page 9: Alive project sanitation system

Filtration stage throughout using of breaking graded limestone that works to increase the filtration & to reduce stuck items & organic loads.

Page 10: Alive project sanitation system

It is the final & last stage where the coming out water passes from the limestone up flow filter to gravel bed hydroponics before going to the drain.

Gravel bed hydroponics description

It is a waterway that is constructed at the end of dismissal line that is normally consists of watercourse of two channels to operate one channel during the other channel maintenance with the depth of about 40 cm and the filtration medium with the depth of 40 cm where the gravels cover the water surface in the model under the surface or the water covers the gravels surface in the surface model , the choice of the model the model depends on the organic loads & the plants kinds with considering that choosing the plants that its roots contains Rhizome from the surrounding environment like the papyrus & reed

The role of plants in the treatment

The treatment is done by the transfer of oxygen from the roots where the oxidation of organic substances by the plants roots that carry out the treatment & getting rid from S.S. & B.O.D. and also the nitrogen through the absorption of organic substances where the treated water pours in the public tanks with taking the samples continuously to adapt the specifications for the leaving water.

Introduction

Providing households in the villages with pure drinking waters with high quality and adequate quantity is one of the most important activities of Alive project, to achieve these activities the following tasks are on going:

Page 24: Alive project sanitation system

Building & constructing 5 water plants for surface treatment from its natural surface resources & using chemical & natural methods to improve the quality of water . high capacity pumps are also installed to pump the water with adequate quantities to cover their main requirements with capacity of 200 m3/hr to serve a population of 226.000.

Page 25: Alive project sanitation system

Building & constructing 2 water stations for wells treatment by removing manganese & iron minerals that harm the human health and then pumping the water in adequate quantities with the capacity 70

m3/hr to serve a population of 77.000

Page 26: Alive project sanitation system

Capacity building of trained & qualified team works is considered one of the main reasons that affect the efficiency of the work in the stations for that those labors will be trained on maintenance methods & emergency cases to guarantee the quality of water .

Page 27: Alive project sanitation system

Finishing the construction, these stations will be managed by the Beni Suef water company & they will be fully responsible for the maintenance.

Page 28: Alive project sanitation system

Capacity building of the community development associations & women groups to work side by side in cooperation with the operation & maintenance team works in the water plants and sustainable monitoring to the execution , treatment process , maintenance & the station cleaning.

Page 29: Alive project sanitation system

Implementing of public network constructions in some villages & renovating some water public networks and supplying 1160 households with pure water with participation of the local community through their contribution in kind & money for connecting the water in cooperation with Beni Suef water company & the local units.

Page 30: Alive project sanitation system

Providing loans to the community development associations & carrying out 9000 clean water connections with cooperation with water economic organization & local units.

Page 31: Alive project sanitation system

Enhancing women participation in the community & practicing their rights to obtain pure water with high quality in accordance to the health standards as well as environmental awareness & water rationalization
