Welcome to the March issue of ‘All About Malvern’.Wehavemanytalentedpeoplelivinginthiscorneroftheworld,andtothatlistI’dliketoaddtheMalvernQuilters.Backinthe1970stherewasarevivalofinterestincrafts.Thegroupbeganwhenateacherofsewingadvertisedaclassandwasoverwhelmedattheresponse.Atthetimetheywereoneofthefirstgroupsinthecountrytoleadtherevival,today,morethan30yearsago,they’restillalivelyanddedicatedbunchkeepingthetraditionalive.Whatreallystruckmeaboutthem,apartfromtheamazingworktheycreate,isthecaringnatureofwhattheydo.Theyregularlyputondisplaysoftheirworkforcharity,andovertheyearsmusthaveraisedthousandsforgoodcauses.Youcanreadallabouttheminthismonth’smainfeatureonPage6.Enjoy the beginnings of spring!

There’sahappybuzzofconversationintheroomasthewomenaroundmesortoutanarrayofbeautifulquiltworklyingacrosstheirlaps.TodayfourmembersoftheMalvernQuiltershavecometogethertocompareworkandchatwithmeoveracoffeeabouttheirhobby,orastheyadmit,theirobsession.‘Ohyes,itisanobsession!’saysPamStanier,who

joinedfiveyearsagowhenshemovedtothearea.‘OnarecentholidaytotheUnitedStateswithmyhusband,wemade25waysidestopsat

quiltshops!’laughsBronwenWarner,thecurrentPresident.

TheMalvernQuiltersisamongtheoldestgroupofitskindintheUK.Therewasarenewedinterestinthecraftinthe1970s.AlocalteacheradvertisedaclassinMalvernandwasoverwhelmedbytheresponse.TheQuilterswereformedin1979andheldtheirfirstexhibitionattheWinterGardensintheearly1980s.Thepastimeisstraightforwardenough.Simplyput,itinvolvessewingtogetherpiecesoffabric,butthere’salotmoreknowledge,planningandskillneededtocreatesomeoftheextraordinarypiecesofworkrangedaroundus.Somefollowthemes,suchasonewithbeautifulseasidescenes,othersusecomplimentarypatternsandcolourstocreatemesmerising,eye-catchingdesigns.Theyareallputtogetherwithexactingprecision.‘We’reconnoisseursoffabric’saysBron,‘beforeyoustartaquiltyouwantqualityfabric,madefromcottonandperhapswithaparticularweave.Abitofyougoesintoeverythingyoumake’.

Althoughapieceofworkcantypicallytakeinexcessof200hours(andsometimemuchmore),itsreckonedaquiltwilltakearoundayeartocomplete.‘I’mmakingoneformyson’stenthweddinganniversary’laughsPam,‘itsstillnotfinishedandhe’sbeenmarriednearly11years!Itisaddictive’sheadds,‘Iwouldhappilyspendallmytimequilting’.‘Its

fourwholedaysatafestivalinBirmingham’saysAnnKay,anothermemberoftheQuilters.‘EachdayIarriveearlyandspendthefirsthoursittinginthecoffeeshop.Ialwaysenduptalkingtothemostfascinatingpeople.TheycomefromalloverEuropeandfromasfarawayasAustraliaandRussia.It’sarealexperience’.Thegroupisn’tjustmadeupofretirees,there’splentyofyoungermemberstoo,someofwhombringyoungchildrenandbabiesalongastheysew.Aswellasafortnightly,informal‘sit&sew’sessions,thegroupmeetstwiceamonthwitharegularprogrammeoftalksfromotherquilters.Theyfinditinterestingtohearaboutdifferentstylesofworkandthewaysinwhichdifferentquiltersapproachtheircraft.Itsalsoachancetolearnnewtechniques.‘Thetalkcouldbebysomebodywho’sworkyouadmire’saysAnn,‘thentheybringoutthefirstpiecetheymadeandyourealisethateverybodyhastostartsomewhere!’

beento,anothersenttheirthanksforwhattheysaidwasasuperbperformance.One‘seasoned’concertgoerhadthistosay;‘TheskillsofthosemusicianswerestaggeringlygoodandIparticularlywentforthesopranoswhoallhadthatmarvellousskillofbeingabletochangeapure-tonednoteinto

onewithaslightvibratotogreateffect.ButhavingsaidthathowcouldInotmentionthetenor,orindeedtheamazingaltos,orindeedthebasswhohadnosolobutwasthereprovidingthefoundationallthetime.’

WhatcanwelookforwardtoinMarchTheKopelmanQuartetwillbeperformingonthe17thofthemonth.ItsmembersallgraduatedfromtheMoscowConservatoireinthe1970s,a‘goldenage’fortheinstitutionduringwhichstudentshadtheopportunitytoworkwithmusiciansandteachersincludingShostakovichandRostropovich.Theirplayingisdescribedascarryingforwardarichinheritanceoftechnicalexcellence,lyricism,graceandmusicalintegrity.TheirconcertfeaturesShostakovich’sFourthQuartetfrom1949aswellasaquartetwrittenbySchubertattheageof16,somethingdescribedasanincrediblymatureworkfromonesoyoung.InthefirstmovementoftheBrahmsQuartet,hissecondofthree,commentatorshavenotedthemotifincludingthenotesF-A-E,theprivatereferencebetweenBrahmsandJoachimthatgaveitsnametotheearliersonatamovementwhich,coincidentally,weheardinlastmonth’sviolinandpianorecital.

This is from the Greek word Skoliosis meaning obliquity or crookedness. Medically it refers to a lateral curvature of the spine although there is nearly always an element of rotation present too. In practice it is extremely common to see some degree of scoliosis. In fact I often think it is more unusual to find someone with a truly straight back. What causes it?A structural scoliosis can be congenital due to abnormalities in the vertebrae from birth, neuromuscular which is secondary to conditions such as spina-bifida or cerebral palsy or idiopathic in which the cause is unknown.A functional scoliosis is a curvature in an otherwise normal spine. It can be temporary e.g. when the spine becomes twisted due to the muscle spasm of an acute back injury. It can also occur after a leg becomes shortened due to injury or surgery. In the latter case a built-up shoe or heel lift will

straighten the back.Does it hurt?Many people carry a mild scoliosis all their life with no symptoms. Others find that they suffer some pain from the muscles and joints due to the asymmetrical forces present. This can get worse with age as general stiffness sets in and the patient is no longer able to compensate for the twist. These cases are often responsive to

my treatment as the improvement in muscle tightness and joint mobility allows them to keep compensating for longer.What is the treatment?Severe scoliosis may require surgery as there can be pressure on internal organs due to the rib cage being distorted. I regularly treat milder cases using soft tissue and spinal manipulation where possible. It is vital to maintain joint mobility and muscle flexibility.
