What is Fybromyalgia syndrome?Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a relatively common problem characterised by widespread muscle pain and tenderness to the touch, which may or may not be accompanied by fatigue, sleep disturbance, depression and gut problems etc. Until recently it was not universally acknowledged by the medical profession. However the World Health Organisation now recognises it as a condition distinct from other rheumatological disorders. What causes FMS?There is no known single cause for FMS but there are many theories. These include genetic factors, stress, post viral syndrome, abnormal hormone and neurotransmitter levels to name but a few. How is it diagnosed?There is no definitive test for Fibromyalgia. e.g. Blood test results, MRI etc. are usually normal. It is often a diagnosis of elimination. In other words, all other causes have been eliminated and there-

fore Fibromyalgia is about the only explanation left for the symptoms. On examination, I look for pain in all four quadrants of the body which has been present for more than 3 months and tenderness in at least 11 out of 18 specific sites in the muscles at any one time. How is FMS treated?Often drugs are given to help with FMS. These include antidepressants such as Amitriptyline which in small doses may be used to help with sleep problems and pain. In my clinic I see many FMS patients who prefer a more physical approach to treatment. I usually use specific soft tissue techniques and medical acupuncture. The treat-ment always has to be tailored to the individual as not all patients respond in the same way. Some patients also benefit from gentle exercises including specific stretches. It must be emphasised that there is no cure for FMS but often quality of life can be improved significantly.

“For a long time we have been searching for the opportunity to expand – and Leigh Sinton seemed to be the perfect location” Sharron explained. “The building has been used as a Nursery for over 10 years, but we wanted to add some “Magic Moments” to the inside, and have completely transformed it since opening!”In a quiet cul-de-sac, just off the Worces-ter to Hereford road, the setting is ideally placed for parents travelling to or from Hereford or Worcester for work – whilst being only a stone’s throw from Malvern and the surrounding villages.Registered for just 28 children, Magic Moments Leigh Sinton has a real “homely” feel to it. Caring for children from 3 months to school age, the quali-fied and caring staff are led by manager Victoria Portman: “I am so proud of what we have achieved in the last 6 months. Our nursery is now a bright, welcoming fun environment for children to learn and play – we have a great team here and we look forward to welcoming new parents and children to grow with us.”Magic Moments History Magic Moments in Kempsey opened back in September 2005. Based in the beautiful Victorian building that housed Kempsey’s school until the late 1970s, it is registered for 30 Nursery children, and 20 in out of school care. Their reputation grew, cul-minating in the award of “OUTSTANDING” in all 14

areas of their Ofsted inspection at the end of 2008. “That was such a brilliant moment for us,” Sharron says, “we were all so proud of that recognition – but

we haven’t sat back and relaxed! We are always looking for ways to develop, and improve the care we provide – for example from September this year, in partnership with Red Hen Cookery, we now offer nutritious and healthy hot lunches across the two Nurseries, a move that has been welcomed by busy parents. Earlier in 2008, Magic Moments opened another Out of School Club – this time

at Rushwick Primary School. What is Barbershop? - A (very) brief history: Fourpart,unaccompaniedandcloseharmony,thebarbershopstyleofsingingcanbetracedbacktothemid19thcenturydevelopingfromacomingtogetherofAfricanAmericangospelandearlyjazzstylesofmusic.Theunaccompaniedimprovisationofharmonieswasfrequentlyheardinbars,parloursand,inparticular,malehairdressingsalonsascustomersentertainedthemselveswhilstwaitingtheirturnforahaircutorshave.QuartetsingingbecamepopularinVaudevilleintheearly1900’sasthemusicbecamemorestructuredandlessimprovised,beforegivingwaytothethennewersoundoftheCrooners.However,recentyearshaveseenamini-revivalofBarbershopinbothchorusandquartetformats,thestylelendingitselfwelltonotonlyitstraditionalsongsbutalsotorearrangementsofmoremodernmusic–eventhatoftheBeatles!“VALE HARMONY” BARBERSHOP CHORUSValeHarmonystartedin1977afterasmallgroupoffriendssawandheardalargeensembleinBristolknownas“TheGreatWesternChorus”.TheyweresoimpressedthattheyreturnedtoWorcestershiredeterminedtostarttheirownchorus.By1978ValeHarmonywasupandrunning–itsfirstpublicperformancebeinginNovemberofthatyear.Thechorushasneverbeenaseriousthreattothe

‘bigguns’likeGreatWesternbuthasbeensuccessfulinlocalcompetitionsatmusicfestivalsinHereford,WorcesterandCheltenham,whilstbywayofconcertsandsing-outsthechorushasprovidedthepublicwithmuchpleasure.In2009thechorusjoinedforceswithaLadies’chorus‘ValeConnection’,andtogethergaveaseriesofperformancesraising£10,000whichwasequallydividedbetweenBirminghamHospitals‘KidneyKidsAppeal’andTheAlzheimer’sSociety.
