From Captain to Christmas Cards There can’t be many men around this part of the world like John Rowe. After spending four decades of his life crossing the world’s oceans, he’s spending his retirement in landlocked Cradley. A chat about his work with a local charity enterprise led to him telling us the story of his career as a Sea Captain, visiting the world’s great ports and even battling pirates!

JohngrewupinTorquay,withafatherwhoworkedfortheRoyalNavy.Hebecameamerchantnavycadethimselfin1954,trainingattheSchoolofNavigationatWarsashnearSouthamptonforayear.‘Itwastough’saysJohn,‘wehadtolearntosailandnavigateasailtrainingship,theMoyana’.Afterhistimeatpre-seatrainingJohnjoinedtheBlueStarLine.Joininghisfirstshipin1955,hebeganworkinghiswayuptheranks.‘Eachrankhadspecificduties.YoustartedasadeckcadetprogressingtoFourth

Officer,thenyoubecameThirdMatewithsecretarialandhealthandsafetyduties.AfterafewyearsIbecameSecondMate,responsiblefornavigation,checkingequipmentwasuptodateandsound,andrelayingwarningsandproblemstotheCaptain.TheFirstMatewasresponsibleforloadingtheshipanddecidingwhatwentwhere.Thiswasanimportantrole,notonlydidevendistributionofweightkeeptheshipsafeatsea,youalsohadtomakesurecargoescouldbeunloadedinthecorrectorder,otherwiseyoucouldwastedaysoftimeinportsortingoutthemess’.FinallyJohnfoundhimselfpromotedtotheroleofCaptainonavoyagefromCapeTowntothePersianGulf,carryingacargoofbananas.‘TheCaptainfellillandwasadmittedtohospital,leavingmeincharge’.Thejobcamewithseriousresponsibilities,lookingafteralargevesselatsea,itscargoandofcourseitspassengers.‘WhencrossingthePacific,there’sapointatwhichyoufindyourselfsevendaysfromthenearestland,anditdidconcernmethatifanythinghappenedtoapassengerwewouldhavetodealwithitourselves’.MemoriesofferociousstormshavealsoremainedengravedonJohn’smemory.‘Irememberone

particularhurricaneofftheNewZealandcoast.AnothertimewewereofftheAzoreswithamassiveswell,whenourenginebrokedown.Wegotitgoingagain,butintheinterimtherollingoftheshipdidsomedamage’.OneChristmasJohnwascaptainingashipofftheportofSantosinBrazilwhenhisshipwasboardedbypirates.AfteraconfrontationtheChiefOfficerwasshot.‘Fortunately’saysJohn‘oneofthepassengerswasaretiredforcesdoctorwhohelpedtreathimuntil

wecouldgethimtohospital’.Wasitaglamorouslifeatsea?‘Likeanythingelse,ithaditsgooddaysanditsbaddays’Johntellsme.‘Certainlyitwasaveryinterestingjob,somethingtogetyourteethintoandenjoy.Isupposethemaindrawbackwasbeingawayfromhome,especiallyonceIgotmarried,butwelearnedtolivewithit’.Letterscouldbepostedhomeandweresortedbyagenciesinport.JohnrememberscallinghomeafterhisseconddaughterwasbornandhearingoperatorafteroperatorrelayingthecallforwardsfromSouthAfricatoBritain.Lateronitbecamepossibletocallhomefromshipsorsendfaxes,butprohibitivecostsmeantthisonlyhappenedforspecialoccasions.JohnbrieflycourtedfamewhenhebecamethefirstCaptainofaBritishShiptoenterBuenosAiresafewyearsaftertheFalklandsConflict.‘Itwasaquiet,discreeteventasitturnedout’saysJohn.‘Weheldasmallcocktailpartyonboardforafewkeygovernmentofficialsanddiplomaticstaff.TheArgentiniansweremostwelcoming,butdon’tforgetourcompanyhadbeensailingtheresincethepreviouscenturyandsotheyknewuswell.Ourarrivalwasreportedinalltheirnewspapers’.ThegoodmomentsforJohnwereseeingoldfriendsinport,especiallyinAustraliaandNewZealand.


From Captain to Christmas Cards ‘MelbournewasacityI’dbeenvisitingsince1955,andIwentthereforthelasttimeonmyretirementvoyagefourdecadeslater’.Othergoodmemoriesarearrivinginsomeoftheworld’sgreatports;sailingundertheGoldenGateBridgeinSanFrancisco,seeingthesunriseinCapeTownandarrivinginRio,withthegiantstatueChristtheRedeemerstandingabovethecity.Fromthemid-1980sthingsbegantochange.‘Theshipsweregettingmuchbiggeratatimewhencrewnumbersweregettingsmaller.’SaysJohn.AfterretirementtolandlockedCradleyin1995Johnquicklydiscoveredanewpassion;Christmascards.TodayJohnisbusyaschairmanoftheMidlandCharitiesAssociationwhichrunsaChristmasCardshop,raisingmoneyforcharitieseveryyearinMalvern.‘Ifirstwenttohelpin1995whentheshopwasrunbyWendyTownsend.Likeme,herhusband

hadbeenatseaandwasrunningittoraisefundsfortheMissionstoSeaman.‘JohnmanagestheshopalongsideSueSellwoodfromSavetheChildren,andtogetherwithadedicatedgroupofvolunteerstheyraisethousandsofpoundsthatgoesstraighttocharity.‘Whenthegroupcomestogetherintheautumn’saysJohn,‘theymightnothaveseeneachotherformonthsbuttheypickupwherethey’veleftoffandit’sverysociable.Since1996we’veraisedatotalof£313,207andafewpence!Itmakesmefeelgood,itreallydoes.’ItsobviousthatJohnenjoyedhistimeatsea,butthesedayslifeinourlandlockedpartoftheworldsuitshimbetter.‘IhavemetsomewonderfulpeopleduringmytimewiththeAssociation.WhenwesendthechequeouttothecharityinMarchthey’reverygratefulandappreciative.Theyalwayswritelovelylettersback’.
