Project: Ride by bicycle and motorbike from the French border to

Gibraltar

Dates: September 2nd-14th 2013

Aim: to raise money for Children in need and Spanish orphanages

Project: two riders, Ed Sadleir and Dave Bull will ride the distance using

bicycles and a motorbike; linking pre-planned events in major expat-

populated areas that are timed for the riders arrival and that are raising

monies for the chosen charities the all along the coast of Spain.

Why?

Having lived in Spain a good number of years and integrated into the

life the two families, who both spend time helping people to enjoy their

life in Spain, decided it was about time we expats showed our hosts just

what we are capable of when we put our minds to it.

Bull Ride

Lisa Sadleir, the brains (and the driving force behind the idea) has put

together a project to involve expats throughout Spain in raising money

for the two very worthy causes and one that will be eagerly anticipated

by foreigners and Spanish as they await the arrival of the two riders into

their town following the latest leg of the adventure.

There is expected to be healthy and fun competition too between the

towns chosen to hold events along the coast with the one raising the

most money for the causes securing the bragging rights for the foresee-

able future.

The two men taking on the challenge, Ed Sadleir a keen cyclist and

windsurfer, and Dave Bull, ex-motorcycle racer and now a cyclist in

training!

Ed, who is 42 and lives in Mijas, will be the lead cyclist while Dave will

be in charge when they opt to use the motorbike (on some of the longer

legs they will use the motorbike to save time and complete the challenge

in 12 days).

Family in Spain has for a long time now looked after the needs of expats

and from their base in Mijas they have been active in recent years orga-

nising fun days and assisting locals when necessary - mention fires

Dave, who is 46 and from Alicante, has run a magazine providing expats

with information and advice for the past eight years and last year began

the Bull Ring, which is a project not unlike BBC’s Dragons Den where he

takes a team of businesspeople to schools and gets the students to pres-

ent their projects in the hope that one of the businesspeople will take

the idea on - which they normally do.

The Charity

Family Bull

Ride is also

the ideal

platform

for the Bull Ring to be promoted up and

down Spain with the anticipation of many local projects in schools

and colleges involving local business people being set in motion with one

specific aim; to give youngsters as much help and as many tools as they

can to head out into the world of industry, whichever that may be.

Information on the Bull Ring can be found on the Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Bull-Ring/209747129079672

Events

The events along the coast will be organised by local coordinators who

have already been chosen for their superb organisational skills and of

course their sense of humour! Events will be varied but expected to be

along the lines of family fun days and town fairs that will be organised

for the day (and time) of the two riders arrival in the town.

After accepting a well-earned refreshment the two riders will h*then

head off on the next leg of the ride, to the next town and the next

event.

Dave told us, ‘With Spain not having seen anything like this before and

with already a huge amount of interest from both the Spanish and UK

media the Charity Family Bull Ride looks like becoming one of those

events that everybody wants to be involved in and the more the better

because the more people that can help out, come along, raise some

cash, do a little busking..the better! Anything...just help us raise some

money for unfortunate kids in Spain and abroad by doing something in

your town.’

If you are interested in putting on an event and helping raise some

money for when the riders arrive in your town - keep checking the

Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CharityFamilyBullRide for

updates about when and where things are going on.

The team also have a wish list and sponsor packages (of differing levels

of commitment) and would like anyone serious about getting involved

in this multi-national project to take a look at the Facebook page to see

how they can help out, whether in a small way or big- we need and ap-

preciate anything that people will do to help us help the innocent kids of

the world.

A number of articles have been published about this issue recently. And a lot of confusion is reigning as usual when a new law is imple-mented and new tax regulations are put into practice.

In order to combat tax evasion a law was passed on 29th of October 2012 and is to carry heavy fines to ensure fulfilment.

All assets worldwide of a resident have to be declared to the Spanish tax authorities in a special declara-tion. Originally, the deadline was to be 31st March 2013. Since this year is the first year in which the said declaration has to made, an approved declaration form is still not available from the tax authori-ties and the deadline has been ex-tended. As an exception, the dec-larations for 2012 have to be made between March and April of 2013.

It has always been the tax obliga-tion of any resident to declare their worldwide income in the country of residency, in this case Spain. This applies to interest payments, rental income, etc. In most cases, this ob-ligation was taken very losely. With this new declaration, a resident is to make a self-declaration of all his

assets, detailing all bank accounts, properties and rights on properties situated outside of Spain, certain insurances, etc.

If your worldwide assets exceed 700.000,- Euros you will be liable to pay wealth tax (impuesto de patrimonio) in Spain. And the in-come generated from those assets abroad, such as interest, rental income, etc. will be taxed in your annual income tax declaration (im-puesto de renta).

The final regulations, such as fines, etc., were to be published in the BOE on the 31st January. Unfor-tunately they were not available at the time of putting this article in the press. In the next edition I will in-form you about the newest in this matter. Seminars will be held at the be-ginning of March. The date and location will be published on my webpage once available and also mentioned in next month’s edition.

It´s ironic isn´t it? Here I am writing an ar-ticle about the power of the press in (pos-sibly) influencing our decisions when they put a certain slant on an article to at-tract, and keep, interested readers´ atten-tion. And I’m just about to ´interest’ you in my side of things…well not exactly my side of things but a look at how things re-ally are in Spain, and in particular in the much talked about property market.

Spain has its problems, that’s for sure, but attracting tourists and expats is really not one of them and although the govern-ment has a headache (or two) trying to balance the books, the story for most in Spain is much the same as before, good weather, a good life and plenty of activ-ity up and down the Costas in the form of buyers, sellers and new projects being started (and sold out) every day.

Opportunities

Don´t get me wrong, I’m not painting a picture through rose-tinted specs here,

there are not thousands of jobs available as there were a few years ago, but there are opportunities. And for those who are ready to grab their new life with both hands and ´have a go´ at perhaps build-ing or running a business then I honestly believe there are few better places for the creative mind to achieve success.

However, for those coming to relax and enjoy either retirement or a second home, again there a few clouds in the sky (literally) as property values are at a very reasonable level with a good choice of second hand homes on the market offer-ing great value for money to for buyers coming from abroad. As we know most European countries are not in a reces-sion and that is where the Spanish prop-erty market is still strong. I´ll agree right now that the volume of buyers from the UK has dropped a little since the ́ Boom´ - but that is why it is called a Boom – a peak in the market. But Spanish properties still sell very well in the UK in 2012 and now

the Scandinavians, the Dutch, the Ger-mans and more are making the move to Spain because they know that right now they will get great value for money and a home in one of the healthiest locations in the world – the Spanish Costas!

If you can, make the move now

The main thing to remember is the same rule applies as to most places in the world. If you want to live away from the ´Madding Crowd´ (thanks Thomas) you´ll find cheaper, larger properties in plentiful supply, but, if you are looking for cool sea breezes and a life on or near the coast, my advice (and I have no connection to property sales in Spain) is to get in now, while the prices are good and properties are available – but they are going fast. In the 18 projects constructing new proper-ties within 25 kilometres of my office well over 70% are already sold.Don’t miss out on a life in Spain…you won’t regret it!

keepingA COOL HEADin Spain

Why now is exactly the right time to invest in a property in Spain.

Wanting to do something on Sunday but

not knowing exactly (or roughly) what

I wanted to do I asked my contacts on

Facebook for some ideas and immediately

Lesley Heyes and Michael Allhoff came up

with a couple of good ones. The stamp fair,

which is more accurately an antiques fair

was Lesley’s suggestion while Michael of-

fered up the Isla Marina Beach Club for a

relaxing visit (and drink) afterwards. Both

appealed, so off I headed, stopping on the

way like a weary traveller at the Chill Out

Bar in Urbanova. Ok I’d only be driving

eleven minutes but you never know what

lies ahead so I work on getting (and keep-

ing) my caffeine levels near the brim, so

to speak. And anyway who’s going to be-

grudge me a breakfast of toast and coffee

on the beach?

Refreshed and recharged I was ready to

take on the rest of the journey (another

eleven minutes) and head for Alicante Town

Hall, the site of my first suggested visit –

The Stamp Fair. I parked easily because I’m

extremely smart and ride a scooter into the

city but if you must go by car, parking isn’t

too much of a problem, and the two car

parks alongside the port (after Panoramis

shopping centre) are rarely if ever full, and

both are only a short walk from the town

hall.

From the port cross over near the foun-

tain on the roundabout and you’ll find the

town hall (ayuntamiento) in the first road

back from the coast (if you find yourself

at the Sex Shop, you’ve gone way too far

this time…) but you really can’t miss it and

even some of the local Spaniards can offer

half-decent directions.

The setting, for what is not just a stamp

fair is, welcoming with at least two terrace

cafes spreading their tables and chairs into

the old courtyard. Standing proudly oppo-

site is one of the finest town halls in the

region and the whole square gives you that

feeling of being somewhere not only differ-

ent but historical too.

Tall shuttered French windows and flower

boxes line the upper floors of the surround-

ing buildings while below, underneath the

arches, Bud Flannagan and Chesney Allen

were entertaining tourists. They obviously

weren’t, I just couldn’t help it when I got

to that bit… Lining the walls of the arched

walkway were stalls with just about any-

thing from roman coins and musical instru-

ments to hand crafted wares and what I

can only be described as knick-knacks (that

covers it). Plenty of willing buyers too along

with the ‘window-shoppers’ filled the nar-

row gap between facing stalls but the cool

location and the nearby water fountains

meant the atmosphere was comfortable

and unrushed. I’m guessing it’s called the

Stamp Fair because that is how it started

out but these days it has evolved into a

good collector’s heaven.

It’s not huge, in fact it’s fairly small with

possibly no more than 40 stalls but it’s

worth a good hour wandering around and

then of course resting up at one of the

courtyard bars to partake in a little people

watching.

From there it was a short hop on the scooter

(about a kilometre in the direction of Valen-

cia) along the seafront to Isla Marina Beach

Club, and if you’ve not been; go soon, and

take your visitors to impress them. Located

right on the edge of the Med’ right in the

middle of the bay the views are superb

across to gran Alacant and in the opposite

direction up to San Juan. Dress in all white

if you go as that’s the unwritten rule with

beach bars, although I always end up look-

ing like a bowler when I do it.

There’s lots of space with chill-out areas,

a pool, restaurant and at least three bars

that I saw, plus bean-bags offer extra seat-

ing on the lawn (yep, real stuff too) but

the best is for last and that’s the white so-

fas that sit about six feet from the water’s

edge. ‘living the life’ or just on holiday you

have to get to this place at least once and

sample all that is so good about an evening

(or day) at a place like Isla Marina. Having

told you how good it is, you’ll be thinking,

‘that’s not gonna be cheap…’ and you’d be

right but if you’re going to treat anyone (in-

cluding yourself) why not indulge in a few

hours on white sofas, alongside the Med

with waiter and waitresses all far too good

looking brining you your favourite cocktail

(ok fellas) or lager…

There’s plenty of free parking down there

too so if you’re driving just follow the coast

road through Alicante and then when the

right hand lane rises above the road (sign-

post Valencia) stay in the middle lane and

look for the signs very soon on the right.

Failing that, if you can’t find it invite me

along and I’ll happily show you where it is…

so long as you’re buying the drinks…?

ATTRACT From antiques to ‘Enya’ by-the-sea…

IN ALICANTEDave Bull followed the suggestions of a couple of readers to head into Alicante and rummage around at the antiques fair

before crossing time (and a very busy road, on his own…) and discovering just one of the things that is so good about

modern Alicante.. the Beach Club.

Funnies...It was hard getting over my addiction to the Hokey Cokey. But Ive turned myself around and thats what its all about.

Paddy caught his Wife having an affair and decided to kill her and himself. He puts the gun to his head, looks at his Wife and says “Don’t laugh, you’re next!!”

An Irishmen wanting to become a Priest went to see the Bishop who said “You must an-swer 3 questions on the Bible”.“1st - Who was born in a stable?”“Red Rum” he replied“2nd - What do you think of Damas-cus ?”“It kills 99% of all germs” he re-plied.“3rd - What happened when the dis-ciples went to Mount Olive ?”“Thats easy” he said “Popeye kicked the shit out of them!!”

Little boy gets home from school and says “Dad, I’ve got a part in the school play as a man who’s been married for 25 years.”His Dad replies “Never mind Son. Maybe next time you’ll get a speaking part!!”

Two Irishmen looking through a mail order catalogue.Paddy says “Look at these gorgeous women! The prices are reasonable too.”Mick agrees “I’m ordering one right now”3 weeks later Paddy says to Mick “Has your woman turned up yet?”“No” said Mick “but it shouldn’t be long now though. Her clothes arrived yesterday!!

In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: “I’ve blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i” rather than “I’ve just buggered a 14 year old escort”.

The police still haven’t seen the funny side, my lap top’s been confiscated, and the wife has gone off to her mother.

FISCAL CLIFF...PUT IN A MUCH BETTER PERSPECTIVE..

Lesson # 1:

* U.S. Tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000* Fed budget: $3,820,000,000,000* New debt: $ 1,650,000,000,000* National debt: $14,271,000,000,000* Recent budget cuts: $ 38,500,000,000

Let’s now remove 8 zeros and pretend it’s a house-hold budget:

* Annual family income: $21,700* Money the family spent: $38,200* New debt on the credit card: $16,500* Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710* Total budget cuts so far: $385

Got It ?????OK now,

Lesson # 2: Here’s another way to look at the Debt Ceiling:

Let’s say, You come home from work and findthere has been a sewer backup in your neighborhood....and your home has sewage all the way up to your ceiling.

What do you think you should do ......

Raise the ceiling, or remove the shit?

Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialized?

Why do people run over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it and then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance?

Why is it that no plastic bag will ever open from the first end you try?

How do those dead bugs get into the enclosed light fix-tures?

‘aving a laugh...

Word: ANOREXICS

1.Six men, whose names are Fred Al-berts, Larry Smith, Brian Martin, Marty Jones, Bill Edison, and John Fox were in an elevator together. Suddenly, the lights went out. When the lights came back on, Fred Alberts was found stabbed. Other detectives have investi-gated. They have questioned the sus-pects, the witnesses, and people who know the suspects. They have collected physical evidence (hair samples, fibre samples, etc.) from the crime scene. They have collected 14 clues, but have not been able to solve the crime. There-fore, they have called in the world’s greatest detective, YOU. You must now examine the clues and solve the mur-der.

No two suspects have the same weight, colour shoes, colour umbrella, colour car, or hair colour. The suspect who owns a purple car was wearing tan shoes. The suspect who weighs 180 pounds owns a green car.Brian Martin owns a green car.The suspect who owns a black car was wearing blue shoes. The suspect who weighs 150 pounds was wearing tan shoes.Marty Jones was carrying a purple um-brella.John Fox has red hair.Larry Smith weighs 210 pounds. The suspect who weighs 190 pounds was wearing blue shoes. The suspect who was carrying a red umbrella is not the one who was wear-ing black shoes. The murderer owns a black car.The suspect who owns a white car is not the one who weighs 170 pounds.Bill Edison was wearing brown shoes. The suspect who weighs 190 pounds is not the one who has red hair.

It's a toughy! It's EASY!

SOLUTIONS:

1.Answer: Marty Jones: We can rule out Fred from our investigations as he was the victim. Brian Mar-tin owns a green car. The murderer owns a black car, so Brian Martin is not the murderer. The suspect who owns a black car was wearing blue shoes. The suspect who weighs 190 pounds was wearing blue shoes. The suspect who weighs 190 pounds is not the one who has red hair. Therefore, one suspect

was wearing blue shoes, owns a black car, weighs 190 pounds, and is not the one who has red hair. But Bill Edison was wearing brown shoes, John Fox has red hair, Larry Smith weighs 210 pounds, and Brian Martin owns a green car. Therefore, the only suspect who could be this suspect is Marty Jones. Since this suspect, Marty Jones, owns a black car and the murderer owns a black car, he is the murderer.

HAVE THEY PICKED WELL IN THE TRANSFER WINDOW?

Teams have made their late transfers and they’re stuck with these

players until the end. But have they made the right choices?

In terms of positions in the Premier League, not much has changed around

the top of the table (as of 28th January). Despite beginning to stabilize

their results, Chelsea find themselves in 3rd position and eleven points

off Manchester United at the top, and six behind United’s cross-city rivals,

Manchester City. With two of the three out of the Champions League and

all three of them entirely focused on taking British football’s top prize, we

should see an exciting finale to this year’s Premier League.

The bottom of the table has changed somewhat. QPR have hit some good

form and with a few quality players coming in they have high hopes of

surviving this season. It seemed an impossibility only a few weeks ago,

yet now many would bet on a QPR survival. Even so, they sit in 20th place.

Newcastle and Aston Villa find themselves in freefall. The two historic Eng-

lish sides are dangling just above the relegation zone. Newcastle have

made full use of the transfer window by signing several top-quality French

players, but Aston Villa may find themselves in the Championship if nothing

changes soon. They need a signing!

Arsenal and Liverpool are building up again and new Liverpool striker Dan-

iel Sturridge has been a sensation, scoring in his first three games for the

club. He and Luis Suarez seem to be building a brilliant partnership that is

causing opposition all sorts of problems. Arsenal have been led by an in-

form Theo Walcott and the silky skills of Spaniard, Santi Cazorla. They find

themselves in sixth place with a chance of Champions League qualification.

Everton too find themselves in a good position, and they will also be hopeful

of playing for Europe’s top prize next year.

The transfer market has been intriguing this year, with most teams making

much needed additions to their squads. Demba Ba was a brilliant signing

for Chelsea, and I have already mentioned Newcastle, QPR and Liverpool.

Manchester United’s signing of Wilfried Zaha should be interesting as the

young winger has been tipped to be a future star. West Ham’s signing of Joe

Cole has paid instant dividends and Tottenham have done well to sign Lewis

Holtby, who is a mercurial talent.

One of the big talking points recently was Eden Hazards ‘kick’ at a ball-boy

during a match against Swansea. At the time of writing, the FA have an-

nounced they will give a longer ban than the three games and Chelsea have

confirmed they will fight against it. Both Hazard and the ball boy were in the

wrong, but does it really merit anything more than a three-game ban. The

17-year-old had said before the game that he planned to waste time and

then sat on the ball with minutes remaining. Hazard shouldn’t have gone

over. He did kick out at the boy, barely, but a three game ban should be

sufficient. In Chelsea’s point of view, it would be detrimental to their season

should the lively winger miss more than the three games, as their reserve

winger, Marko Marin, has not looked up to Chelsea’s standards when given

a chance this season.

The Premier League is always full of stories and controversy, but that is

what makes this league the best ever. Nobody will forget last year’s last

minute finish, where Sergio Aguero won the Premier League with pretty

much the last kick of the season!

Catch you all later as in February as the race heats up!
