EURO-VISION...A warm welcome to all our new Scandinavian and

Spanish readers.

All Abroad has always previously focused on the

UK expats but we’d like to share our fun and infor-

mation with a much bigger audience and starting

this month we have a feature for Scandinavians in

Swedish and from next month we’ll be adding to

our European feel with articles also in Spanish and

from June in German too.

We hope you enjoy the new style of magazine that

we are sure will appeal to all and I’d like to intro-

duce two lovely ladies who will be helping us do

just that: Gemma Alonso Martin (Spanish) from

Elche and Linda Ageskog (Swedish) from Gran

Alacant.

Look out also for the introduction of German lan-

guage articles in the coming months!

Welcome!

Nuestra más cordial bienvenida a todos

nuestros nuevos lectores escandinavos y

Bienvenido!

Ett varmt välkomnande till alla nya

skandinaviska och spanska läsare.

All Abroad har alltid tidigare fokuserat

We have a very busy month ahead here at the magazine with firstly an invite

to the largest property exhibition in the UK showing life Spain – a Place in

the Sun at Olympia (12-14 April) – to chat about just what a great life can be

had out here in the sun. If you’re reading this and will be at the show please

come along and introduce yourself, and we can grab a coffee!

I’ll also be chatting to potential expats on the stand at the show in my role

as a relocation advisor for the Costa Blanca. The idea is that anyone looking

to move abroad can come and discuss, not only the good points, but also

things that they will need to be aware of should they make the move, and,

of course, I’ll be there to help with all the paperwork, language and other

‘interesting’ matters that can sometimes make settling in a foreign country

such as Spain.

Estate agents are now using relocation advisors to talk and look after people

considering the move or those who have already bought their property but

need a hand to settle in Spain and that’s where I come in, to help things go

smoothly either by using the huge network of contacts amongst Spain’s relo-

cation advisors – who are all around the country and all have experience and

the language skills to deal with any problems.

So that’s that and our next outi9ng will be to watch Editor Dave Bull racing

around the Cartagena race track firstly on a motorbike and then in a race car

to celebrate the Festival of Speed on the 4th and 5th of May.

Finally, on the 29th of May we’ll be at the Homes, Gardens & Lifestyle expo

at La Finca, Algorfa with the likes of BBC’s Tommy Walsh – come and see us

at all or any of the shows and we’ll be happy to see you…if we’re still in one

piece!

A great guide to the area and would that would entice me to make a visit.Love the strap line “Europe meets Spain”Not too wordy, the photographs tell a great story without the need for much more.I would buy a well printed copy just for the pictures. If I rented my property I would be asking for per-mission to link it to my website...........I guess this is part of your intentionCould easily be used by Communidad to promote the area and wouldnt take a lot of translation.Puts the work of others who have claimed they are promoting the area to shame. Following my article in last two

month’s edition as regards the dec-

laration of worldwide assets (Model

720) for foreign residents in Spain

here some more information.

This declaration has to be pre-

sented by those resident in Spain.

However, the law clearly regards

anyone that has resided more than

183 days during the year 2012 as

resident in Spain regardless of the

documentation they possess. If the

tax authorities demand the pres-

entation of the annual income tax

declaration or the presentation of

the said tax form 720 it is up to the

demanded party to supply proof

of having lived in the UK (or other

country that applies) for more than

6 months during the year 2012.

In case of doubt it might be a good

idea to present the declaration. The

tax authorities will only fine for

declarations that were not made,

they never fine for declarations that

were presented by mistake.

I have to make an addition to the

paragraph I wrote in the previous

article as regards the bank ac-

counts “Important to know is that

the information of bank accounts

abroad with a balance exceeding

50.000,- Euros on 31st December

has to be given even if there is

more than one account holder. In

this case the total balance is given

with the indication of the percent-

age of the holder.”

It is important to take into consid-

eration that you also need to look

at the average balance during the

last quarter of 2012. If it exceeds

the balance on 31st December 2012

the higher figure is to be used for

the declaration.

Once this declaration was made you

will only have to present it again

next year if in any of the three sec-

tions there has been an increase of

more than 20.000 €.

And not to forget, the deadline for

the presentation of the form 720 is

the 30th April 2013.

A good few years ago, I think it may have been when we first started the magazine in 2005, I had a call from a polite Spanish fellow asking to advertise in our magazine, of course I didn’t say no...but now all this time later, and after recom-mending his company a number of times over the years to friends and readers alike, I thought it was time I let the people behind Chimeneas Candela of Elche, who I have heard my friends thanks me profusely for recommending them to use Jose’s company. Here is what Jose had to tell me about his com-pany.

CANDELA fireplaces are specialists in home heating and it is more than 25 years since we, the Candela brothers, started seeking a new and ex-citing challenge. Thus CANDELA fireplaces was born and we did it by giving a new style and ap-proach to selling and supplying chimneys. From our first moment in the fireplace business the two of us, Candela and Jose A, wanted to offer more innovative, efficient and environmentally friendly products. With the passing of the years, and thanks to our experience of day to day work and trips to inter-national conferences and events, we have man-aged to position ourselves well in the competitive market of heating which includes stoves and fire-places, as well as barbecues and ovens....

We are “The people of fire”. In the Candela fireplaces team we are aware that the best time for us at work is to have the approval and satisfaction of our customers. We communi-cate in their language, and we try to advise them, because each fireplace is personalized... We have made it so that buying a fireplace or stove is very simple... a single call or an e-mail and we will come to the client’s home and, once we have dis-cussed the client’s needs, we offer our best prod-

uct for their case and give an estimate to suit their budget; completely free and without obligation. We have full confidence in all of our staff which means that when they work they are free when-ever required to give the best advice and help for the benefit of our customers.

Jose. A. Candela, is a prominent member of sev-eral business organizations in the province of Alicante with some of these organizations formed by entrepreneurs from different European nation-alities with meetings weekly... communication is done in English. We are not only here to sell fireplaces though and there have been many times that we have helped or made contact with customers from other pro-fessions or trades when we are needed.

We have long opening hours from Monday-Sat-urday at our store in Elche, and every Sunday morning, can visit us at our display at the Guar-damar “Lemon Tree Market” market.

You can also have a look at our range of products on the Web: wwwchimeneascandela.esFind us on Facebook, Twitter... etc.

At fireplaces Candela, we are always pleased to meet you.

You can take the girl out of the Valleys…

Fiona & husband Jose talk about

30 years together in Spain

How a young British woman came to Spain, hated it…and stayed...31 years.

Avda. Escandinavia C.C. Altomar 2GRAN ALACANT

When a young Welsh lady first arrived in the small fishing town of Santa Pola in 1982 she didn't like the place very much at all. In fact the 24 year old woman was tempted to step straight back on the plane and head home if it wasn't for the small matter that her parents needed her help inn buying a new home in the area after an unpro-ductive, and expensive, experience do-ing the same on the Costa del Sol.

So Fiona Edwards, the shy girl who was brought up living in Cardiff Castle didn't get back on the plane...ever. 31 years later she is still here and although some mat consider that an appropriate amount of time to deal with Spanish paperwork, that was dealt with long ago and, as is often the case, love played a part in her decision to stay, in fact her love was shared between two deserv-ing benefactors, Santa Pola and Jose Luis Llanos Madrigal, a charming and handsome young Spanish man who lived in the town and had helped her deal with her parents’ house purchase.Fiona is clearly still in love with both and the couple have continued to work together successfully ever since with Fiona adding, 'the secret for us is that we very rarely, if ever, talk about work when we are at home and this way we have the time to enjoy our-selves - especially now that the kids have grown up.'

Jose and Fiona opened their first Victoria Estate Agent office in Calle Elche, Santa Pola in 1983 and began bringing out the first Brits to the area to buy homes after meeting the couple at exhibitions about Spain in the UK.

If you should find yourself in the very pretty Santa Pola del Este take a look up at the Riamar complexes which were the original apartments sold n the area to the first Brit-

ish people to come and live in Santa Pola and Victoria Estate Agents helped to fill those new holiday homes in the eighties with pioneering expats looking for a holiday home in the sun as opposed to maybe snap-ping up the mobile home...in Clacton...Fiona, now fluent and speaking Spanish as her main language every day, was not quite the confident, efficient business woman that she is today and in those early days of their new office she would sit and hope that, while Jose was out with clients, the phone wouldn't ring! It did, and often, and Fiona, with Jose alongside, found her feet and her future in Spain, looking after the British that were now coming to the area.

And that’s how it still works with Victoria Estate Agent today, taking care of people

who need perhaps a little more than a salesman’s banter and a whistle-stop tour of properties. And once a property is sold the service doesn't stop and Fiona, Jose and all the staff at Victoria are often to be found helping clients old and new with anything from deciphering a phone to looking for a kennel for the dog. They have seen and experienced a lot in those thirty years - including the sale of a hone to the parents of ex-Real Madrid idol Raul and a famous actress from the BBC's EastEnders programme. There has been some fun along the way too with Jose, as he was driving one day, in-forming his mother in law - who was by now convinced that perhaps this wasn’t the right man for her daughter - ' am going to fart...' when what he actually meant to ask was 'am I going too fast..?'

Another time a very camp (well you would be wouldn't you...) drag artist from Lon-don came to Victoria to buy a home in Los Jardines in Santa Pola. Jose went with the chap, but being a rather machismo young Spanish man of the time he wasn't all that keen on accompanying 'Queenie' (real name...) but saw it as part of his duty and headed off to show the chap the new, and very tall, new homes.

With Queenie having insisted on going to the top floor, despite Jose's protests that the temporary staircase was unsafe, the pair headed up to take in the magnificent views overlooking Tabarca Island. That is when Queenie discovered his fear of heights and with a scream clung on the scaffold for dear life leaving a confused and by now sweating Jose to try and per-suade him to let go of the scaffold and go downstairs. Two hours later, like a hostage negotiator, Jose began to lead the shak-en and very nervous Queenie down the stairs and out of the house to terra firma. Queenie's only stipulation for releasing his vice-like grip on the scaffold was that Jose had to hold his hand all the way down, which he did. Luckily none of Jose’s friends found out about it though...until now.

Gran Alacant's first ever estate agent, Vic-toria continues to look after expats in the area and are always open and ready for a friendly chat about life and living in this wonderful area. Pop in and see Fiona and Jose and the team who all speak English, you may even get to hold the handsome fellas hand yourself

Talking Therapies here in Quesada (near Torrevieja) and Hondon de los Frailes (near Aspe) does all of the above. Many people with serious mental health problems move in the hope that their problems will stay in the UK, sadly this does not happen and their problems travel with them.

Here at Talking Therapies we support people with many issues, we support people either on a 1-2-1 basis with individual therapy or in group therapy. Both have their advantages in different ways. Indi-vidual therapy is just about you, to come and talk about your problems in a safe and confidential en-vironment, individual therapy is 25 euro’s per hour.

Group therapy has two advantages it shares the costs between everyone in the group. It deals with problems that the entire group have and although experiences can be shared it is not a ‘who’s got bigger problems hour’, it’s a session that gives you information on how to overcome your problems and gives you support in a positive way. Group therapy is 5 euro’s per session.

The hardest thing about asking for help and talking to a therapist is, possibly facing your biggest fears, talking about what is wrong makes it very real, this is scary but, it will also make you feel better once you have shared your problems and start to get the correct support from what is holding you back from enjoying your life.

Talking Therapies is here to support you, your fam-ily, your friends or anyone else you may know. We have cut costs to a bare minimum so therapy can be available to everyone. All Talking Therapies thera-pists are fully qualified, insured and legal.

AS we sat in his office chatting (surrounded by his many trophies...) he told me how he and his wife had started the business in 1983 from the front room of their home in Elche. His wife Do-lores would cut the fabric and prepare the blinds in the house while Joaquim would be out either fitting the blinds or selling and measuring up for a client’s order.

Nowadays Toldos Penalver employs 18 staff and runs ten vehicles from its two workshops; one of which is run by Dolores in the centre of Elche, while his son meets clients and arranges orders and his two daughters, Raquel and Maria Dolo-res (who make a beautiful reception committee I might add) work in the sales office and deal with the day to day matters that a medium sized com-pany such as this generates. There is a family connection all the way through the company with cousins, nephews, nieces and more helping to make up the friendly workforce.

You will have seen the work, and probably the vans, of Toldos Penalver when you’ve been out

and about on the Costa Blanca, and perhaps, even sat underneath their handiwork in one, or two, of the many bars and restaurants that have employed their services. IF you’ve been to Santa Pola and strolled the prom and then stopped for refreshment in the large, round cafe, La Pena Grande then that is a fine example of their craft. The Polamar Hotel and the impressively huge Dos Ruedas bikers’ cafe in Elche which has an awning supplied by Joaquim and his team covering 200 square metres and costing over 20,000 euros - but as I say, it is very impressive.

Although they supply many businesses with vari-ous and varying types of blinds and awnings Tol-dos Penalver rely mainly on their private custom-ers to keep them busy and in recent years that has obviously meant more and more foreigners with slightly differing requirements to their native hosts. As Joaquim explained, ‘The foreigners de-mand a little more than the Spanish in the respect that they require punctuality primarily but also they look closely at quality and design.’I

asked how Toldos Penalver managed with the de-mands of expats to which Joaquim explained that he had always worked on the philosophy of arriv-ing on time for appointments with customers and offering a service that means that the client gets the choice of quality and design that suits their budget but still means they will receive a product suitable for the job. Many is the time that I have passed on a client to Joaquim and he has been, gone and measured up before I make myself look daft by phoning said client, too late, to say Joa-quim is on his way!

Thirty years on and Joaquim and his family work the business daily with and alongside other like companies which makes for a friendly but still competitive marketplace that Toldos Penalver has contributed a significant amount of trade to.

Customers are welcome to take a look at sam-ples and working awnings (such as the smooth, silent, sleek model in the workshop - no, not the sisters...!) And take a look, and feel, at the options available to either businesses or private clients looking for some summer shade in their homes.

All Abroad proudly recommends Toldos Penalver through ten years of association and experience of working together. IF you have any questions at all about awnings, blinds or any other products that Toldos Penalver offer give the guys a call on the numbers on the advert opposite. (P.s. mention this article and I reckon the Penalver family will find their way to giving you a special All Abroad discount!)

‘Thirty years on and Joaquim and his family work the business daily’

I’ve known Joaquim Penalver for over ten years now and we have some great conversations at times comparing his rallying days and my motorcycle racing ones (he won a lot more silverware than I ever did...) but last month I managed to catch up with him, at his large workshop on the Carrus industrial estate in Elche, to find out a little about the man and his business, Toldos Penalver, which has successfully served expats and Spaniards for over thirty years on the Costa Blanca.

Toma Tours is a new bou-tique tour operator based

in Andalucia. Manni Coe launched the company during the depths of the Spanish recession with a very clear goal in mind: to show people the “Spain they never knew”.

Toma Tours are all about mean-ingful travel, discovering the very heart and soul of a destination in a way that big-bus tour operators just cannot achieve, after just 18 months they now rank #6 out of 286 activities in Andalucia on Tri-padvisor

Here is what Manni said about his new ven-ture…- What did you do before you set up Toma?I was a Tour Director for 12 years with a couple of business ventures thrown in for good measure; a bar in Seville, a t-shirt company, a postcard series of scenic Anda-lucia…- When did you finally decide to set up touring on your own with Toma Tours? September 2011- What made you decide to do it?To be able to concentrate on boutique tour-ism in Andalucia. I had been working as a guide for 12 years but felt increasingly lim-ited by the Big Bus and the strict timetable. Toma is the antithesis to Mass Tourism- What does Toma represent?“Traditional Marvellous Morocco & Andalu-cia” - Our goal is to reveal the heart and soul of these places to our clients. All of our tours reveal hidden sides of the history and culture. Clients really feel as if they have enjoyed a privileged insight into local histo-ry and culture. One repeating client thanked us for “sharing the Spain I never knew...”

- What made you believe it would work?I set the company up off the back of signing a contract with a large and established hotel chain - Marriott. Sealing that deal gave me the impetus to take the risk in the middle of the recession and crisis. - What was the hardest thing to over-come?Paperwork! Not my strong point! Bureaucracy...I got myself a great Ges-tora who guided me (and still guides me) through all the steps- Did you ever feel like giving in?Never - What has been your biggest achieve-ment?Hosting a family reunion, and a fiftieth birthday celebration on a private yacht in Turkey. From just a little base knowledge of

the country, I crafted a 10 day adventure and it was the perfect trip. All of us that went still revel in the memories. - How do you feel about the way the business is going?Recently Toma has grown from a one man band to a team of 3. We had our first busi-ness lunch recently and it felt great. We now have Lindsay as our Online Community Manager and Ivan has joined us as a second Tour Manager, which means we can extend the programme. The best thing is that we share the same passion and think so much alike.

- What do you feel the future holds for Toma?

We don’t want to grow too much as the

Jesus was a Spaniard...and other things.

I have come to the conclusion that Jesus must have been Spanish. I have no conclusive proof but I base my opinion on observations in Spanish bars. I have always wondered how Jesus fed 5000 people with five loaves and two fishes but I think I have the answer. Go into any traditional Spanish bar and watch a Span-ish man at the bar with a beer and a tapa. He will usually have a couple of bits of bread and will eat all of it. When he leaves, just look at the floor and you will notice a pile of crumbs, which if swept up, would make much more than two pieces of bread. Presum-ably Spanish men do not walk around with pockets full of crumbs, so they must have the ability to make two small pieces of bread into a loaf. Therefore, if Jesus was Spanish, he could have made sandwiches for 5000

apartments, put a T shirt on? Nothing else, so every-thing is dangling below, so why bother with a T shirt? Answers please....

It is the time of year out here where flies are every-where, persistent little buggers whose main aim in life seems to be to annoy the hell out of me. Can anyone let me know a reason why flies exist, because I am struggling to find one. Why do they seem to want to go for every orifice available, ears and nose seem fa-vourite, I am just glad I keep my Speedos on....

Oh well, time to sit outside with a cold beer and a fly swat... I suppose life isn’t too bad here really.

This month I would like to introduce you all to a great entertainer out here called Joanna Wells.Joanna may be a relatively new kid on the block, but she comes from a well established musical background, not only was her grand-father a successful drummer but she has no less than the famous Welsh singer and com-poser Ivor Novello in her family tree. Although originally born in Yorkshire she was brought up in Cardiff, and started singing al-most as soon as she could talk. At the age of 9 she was chosen to join the South Glamorgan Junior Choir with whom she sang at many of the top venues all over Wales, during this time she was an enthusiastic member of her local church choir and continued singing with the choir into her teenage years.

After leaving school Joanna went into the fi-nancial services sector as her career choice. However after a chance meeting while on holiday in Spain in 2011 Joanna was set to swap finance for singing. She met one half of the professional duo Vocal Harum who recog-nized her singing talents and asked her sing with him at an upcoming event, buoyed by the overwhelming positive reception she received following this gig Joanna made up her mind and took the plunge and decided to swap grey Welsh skies for sunny Spanish skies and start a professional solo singing career on the Costa Blanca. Since September 2011 Joanna has made a name for herself singing in many different venues in and around the Torrevieja area of the Costa Blanca South region of Spain, her varied repertoire ranges from the timeless hits of the 60s, the unforgettable 80s pop songs, right up to the classic hits of today such as Amy Winehouse and even Robbie Williams! When not behind the mic Joanna has always been a very adventurous young lady, having jumped out of planes for charity and taking the odd flying lesson here and there so if we can manage to keep this girl on the ground for long enough then go and hear her sing you will not be disappointed.

So if you’re a bar or an entertainer and want to appear in the gig guide then please contact me by email on [email protected] or call me on 685302529 or just visit my websitewww.starsinbars.org Mandy x
