ITF/CAT Southern Africa 13 & Under Circuit Pretoria – South Africa 21 June – 1 July 2008

The ITF/CAT Southern Africa 13 & Under Circuit concluded on 1st July in Pretoria, South Africa. Nine countries from the region participated, namely: Botswana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe with a total participation of 23 boys and 16 girls. The first tournament was a SATA sanctioned junior tournament in Belgrave. This tournament gave the participating players an opportunity to test their skills against national ranked South Africans and it was also hoped that they would earn SATA Junior ranking points which would enable them to play South African tournaments in the future. The second tournament was an ITF/CAT event, held at the University of Pretoria, with only the invited countries participating against each other. In this boys’ singles event, Chevaan Davids from South Africa, the number 3 seed, beat no. 6 seed Lebelo Mosehle from Lesotho, 6-2 6-3. The girls draw, with a perfect entry of 16, saw Madagascar dominate, with Safidy Razafindrakoto beating compatriot Prisca Razafimamonjy 7-6 6-2. With the girls’ win fresh in their mind, the Madagascar boys’ team of Andrianjafy and Ravinson kept the ball rolling by taking the doubles title over the Zimbabwean duo of Lock and Saurombe 6-2 4-6 10-7. The Madagascan girls put their recent battle behind them, teaming up to take the girls' doubles title over the Mauritius team of Lim Ah and Wong Hong 6-2 7-6. Karl Davies, ITF Development Officer for Southern Africa, commented, "Thanks have to be extended to the hosts, the South African Tennis Association, for their excellent hospitality. Comparing the level of play and depth with last year, it seems we are improving as a region. It was also encouraging to see the large number of entries from 12 year old players. We are looking forward to the players continuing their training and competition and seeing them at the next regional event, the Southern African Junior Championships in January 2009”.
