We hope you enjoy another great issue and, if you can make it down to the Prince of Wales Stadium this Sunday, a cracking match against Barrow in Kingstone Press League 1.
The match takes place during a week of celebrations for the University of Gloucestershire. Staff and students have been enjoying a Festival Week which marks the end of term and, for some, the end of a degree course and the start of a new period in their life.
Cheltenham has been host to some special exhibitions of student work, and the sports students enjoyed their Annual Sports Awards at the Town Hall on Thursday. Should they recover sufficiently, we hope that many students and staff will be tempted along to the match against Barrow, perhaps for their first taste of rugby league.
We hope that many more will be able to enjoy the All Gold for the first time, downloading it for free along with hundreds of other sports fans.
The next couple of years will see huge changes at the University, offering
incredible benefits for sport and, we hope, the All Golds as well.
The Oxstalls Campus in Gloucester has, for the past decade, been a welcoming and functional environment for students. However, it is about to be totally transformed with the arrival of a brand new Business School, and a massive expansion of sports facilities. The existing Oxstalls Sports Park, which includes the Oxstalls Tennis Centre and Hockey astroturf, will effectively merge with the University campus, creating a huge sporting infrastructure stretching across over 70 acres. Two new state of the art, third generation astroturf pitches – one focused on football, one for rugby – will be built next to the tennis centre, along with a triple sports hall (with seating for major events), a new cricket pitch and pavilion and the equivalent of nine full size grass football pitches.
There will be nothing like it in the county. It will drive huge numbers into sport and become an inspirational event venue. The site will undoubtedly involve both rugby codes, and will be an excellent home for our competitive university teams. It may even prove to be a venue for our professional and elite teams in time, so that is a prospect that we will watch out for with interest.
New facilities like these will provide fantastic foundations for sporting and academic success in the future, but we are delighted that we are already able to showcase great examples of student endeavour in the All Gold.
In addition to those graduates and students who will take to the pitch for the first team on Sunday, it’s wonderful to see the efforts of current students in our support staff as well. Special mention this time around goes to all-round journalist, social media guru and commentator Patrick Baines, and to the superb
Lewis Mitchell, whose sports photography continues to improve on a weekly basis. We hope you enjoy their work in this edition.
Thanks as ever to our editor Chris Wilson, to our regular contributors and to the amazing Craig Paul Design.

The club’s inaugural member was Phil Cowburn and shortly afterwards Matt Bradley reached the landmark. This season, Joe McClean hit the half century and, in France last weekend,
our captain Steve Parry became the fourth All Gold to reach 50 appearances.
Steve joined us in 2013 and has gone on to become a key member of our team.
When Lee Greenwood took over in late 2014 one of the first things he did was to appoint the Welsh international as first team captain and it’s easy to see why - Steve is a player who

leads by example, both on and off the field of play.
An ever-present in 2015 he enjoyed a sensational campaign that saw him pick up multiple player of the year awards as well as an award for topping the try-scoring charts with a club record 14 touchdowns. To cap his incredible season he, along with four current All Golds players, won a
European Championship title with Wales.
There have been plenty of highlights in the past few seasons but one stands out as a particular favourite for Parry. “The best game I’ve been involved in has to be our win over North Wales Crusaders in the Challenge Cup earlier this season. We managed one hell of a comeback, (36-16 down with 20 minutes to play), scoring three tries in the last ten minutes to win the game.
The feeling in the team after that win was incredible.”
“I’m very proud to reach 50 appearances. As a young club it’s something that only three other players have achieved so it’s great to be added to that list. We’ve had a bit of an up and down start to the season and as a team we’ve been a bit down on ourselves as we know we could have done better but we’ve stuck together and worked hard at what we need to fix and positive results are coming. Lee’s instilled a good professional culture at the club and we’ve got a fantastic group of players who look out for each other so it’s great to be a part of.”
“It’s been a massive privilege to be a part of what this club is building towards. I came here half way through their first season in Championship 1 and ever since then the club has improved every year, it’s been great to be a part of it.”

12Lee Greenwood’s side haven’t tasted victory in the league since mid-March but will be hopeful of putting an end to their nightmare run after improved recent performances against Hunslet and Toulouse.
Head Coach Lee Greenwood has freshened up his squad with recent signings Charles Nies and Zack McComb who have both featured in
the last two games. Graham O’Keeffe and Aaron Lyons are still some time away from a return to action after suffering serious injuries earlier in the season which means the 17 that faced Toulouse last Saturday could be in line to run out against Barrow.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game the All Golds’ Head Coach is wary of the threat that Barrow will pose. He
said: “Barrow were beaten comfortably by Toulouse a fortnight ago and have had a week off, so they will be wanting to do a good job on us. They are full of good individual players at this level and it’s another tough challenge for us. I thought we gave Hunslet a game the last time we were at home and we will give it our best to do the same on Sunday.”
“We competed for periods against Toulouse but were ultimately well beaten again. I cannot fault the overall effort although our start was very soft. We were 18-0 down after eight minutes.”
Barrow have enjoyed a solid start to their League 1 season and look well placed to secure a place in the top eight. The Cumbrians have had a fortnight’s rest since their home defeat by Toulouse. Prior to that game they handed out a thrashing

to South Wales Scorpions but more impressive was their 50-12 demolition of York City Knights who were unbeaten before travelling to the West coast.
If last season’s two encounters are anything to by Sunday’s game should be very close. Barrow edged the first contest 16-14 in the cup and were victorious in the league game later in the season, being on the right side of a 26-18 scoreline.

Another two points slipped away as the All Golds went down to Hunslet at the PoW. For a long period in the second half when the sides were down to 12 men after the dismissals of the Hawks’ George Flanagan and All Golds’ captain Steve Parry for fighting
there was nothing to choose between the teams. But it was the Hawks’ ability to play at pace and to control the rucks for lengthy
periods that saw them home. When Josh Allison stretched over to score and Matt Bradley goaled, the All Golds led by two points,

however the same old defensive problems surfaced. Hands across the pitch caught them short for the try that put Hunslet ahead and then an angled run across the defensive line had the visitors 16-6 up at the break.
This became 20-6 five minutes into the second half but then came the dismissals and a neat kick into the in-goal from James Rowland was touched down by Chris Barlow in the corner. Bradley’s touchline conversion cut the lead to eight but there it stayed for much of a pretty uneventful half until Hunslet worked much the same move as the All Golds had done and got the same result.
Lamont Bryan’s rather soft score with the last play of the game and Bradley’s goal didn’t hide the frustration that things just aren’t going as well as everyone had hoped.
There were big efforts across the team, Barlow finished well for his sixth try of the season, Morgan Evans produced some big hit-ups while newcomers Zack McComb and Charles Nies settled well and made promising debuts. The
halves tried their best against a solid defence but could only rarely get the side into decent field position to create scoring opportunities.

Trailing 18-0 after just ten minutes’ play is not the best of starts and to give a side as good as Toulouse that kind of advantage is not helping your cause. The All
Golds did well to battle back to 18-12 thanks to tries from Steve Parry on his 50th appearance for the club and Chris Barlow who is developing into a promising winger with an eye for the tryline but there was little chance of them salvaging anything from the match save a little respectability. That they did do despite conceding twice before the break and Barlow added a second touchdown early in the second half as the scoring rate slowed.
Toulouse posted three converted tries of their own but only after the All Golds had worked hard to keep them out and fashioned one or two opportunities of their own.
Parry’s try was his ninth of the season and Barlow is just a score behind him alongside Phil Cowburn on eight while Bradley’s two goals took him past the 350 point mark for the club.

As one would expect the funeral service witnessed a church packed to capacity with many more mourners outside. Aged only 68, the genius known as “Roger the Dodger” etched his name in rugby folklore.
Born in the 13-a-side stronghold of Castleford, Millward first came to national prominence in the youth matches televised on Independent Television in the 1960s.
Unable to break into the half back jerseys at his home town club due
to the “H Bombs” – Alan Hardisty and Keith Hepworth – he moved to the East Riding of Yorkshire to join Hull Kingston Rovers.
Roger Millward was an inspired signing by the Robins that led to a memorable Challenge Cup

Final victory over arch rivals Hull in 1980 and, as coach between 1977 and 1991, three Division 1 titles, a Division 2 title, two Premiership Trophies and Floodlit Trophy and Yorkshire Cup victories as Rovers became one of the game’s powerhouses.
As a player he is perhaps best remembered for playing on despite suffering a fractured jaw early in the 1980 Cup Final before he lifted the coveted trophy before the red and white hordes at Wembley stadium.
He was a prolific try scorer - 207 in 406 appearances - with the distinct hallmarks of pace and evasive skills. However folklore will tell the tale of how this diminutive genius led the British Lions to a pulsating victory against Australia
on July 4th 1970 at the Sydney Cricket Ground before a capacity crowd of over 60,000 after scoring a record 20 points from two tries and seven goals in the second test a fortnight previously.
The sight of Millward finishing off a British move with a 40-yard dash to the corner was the crowning glory of an historic encounter. Little did the world know this would be the last time we would secure the Ashes - some 46 years ago!
Made an MBE by the Queen for his great deeds and inducted into the Rugby League Hall of Fame, Millward gained 29 caps for the Lions and 17 for England.
He was as majestic off the field as he was on it as he was known as
a true gentleman and sportsman. We salute you Roger Millward MBE - a paragon of sporting greatness.
We all still live in hope that the sport’s governing bodies will wake up to the fact that the abridged version of the game - 9s - is its passport to global expansion. The sooner a series of Grands Prix is established for nations on every continent, the sooner rugby league will rise to the top echelons of the sporting world.
We, for our part, in Gloucestershire continue to deliver on the 9s front with the recent 1908 and Golden Fern Cups for boys and girls being great successes. Moreover plans are afoot to bring back the beautiful All Golds 9s trophy that has - for political reasons - been in abeyance for a few years now.
The key question is who should it be for? Amongst the suggestions are top independent schools, club sides or countries. Watch this space for future updates.
Finally the Blackpool Big Bash last weekend was absolutely outstanding with four of the six matches seeing teams separated by no more than four points. Sky did well to provide hours of live coverage which leads one to ask - why don’t Sky provide regular coverage of Championship rugby? A mystery indeed!
The man to whom we all owe so much

The event is in its ninth year and, for the second year running, was spread over two venues.
The 1908 Cup took place at the University of Gloucestershire’s Folley site, while the Golden Fern Cup was held at the nearby Prince of Wales Stadium.
There, Ribston Hall won the Golden Fern Cup at both U13 and U15 age groups with wins over St Peters in the U13 event and Dene Magna at U15.
The Golden Fern Cup is the annual Touch Rugby
League tournament run by the University of Gloucestershire All Golds’ community department in partnership with Touch and Tag Gloucestershire. It follows on from six weeks of coaching in schools as part of the All Golds’ Sky Try programme, which is the largest ever programme of Rugby League in schools. The All Golds are currently in the second year of the programme, having delivered to over 1500 children and young people since 2015.
Ken Stone, Touch & Tag Association chairman, who ran the Golden Fern Cup, said:
“The competition was a great success with the girls from the schools getting plenty of touch rugby league. The skills and speed demonstrated were fantastic and the two finals were played in the spirit of the game and the Empress Awards could have been won by a handful of players”
In the boys’ event at The Folley some highly competitive action over four age groups resulted in St Peters and Chosen Hill confirming their status as real powerhouses of the competition as they each won two age groups and

represented six of the eight finalists across the four age groups.
In the Year 7 competition, Chosen Hill and Bartholomew School played in a tight Plate final, with the Oxfordshire school coming out on top by four tries to three, before St Peters produced their best rugby league of the day to overcome a tiring Churchdown side to take the title.
Year 8 proved to be the closest competition of the day. The Plate final saw Bartholomew School beating Tewkesbury; Chosen Hill pipping St Peters 4-3 to take the Cup after a pulsating contest.
Tewkesbury won the Year 9 Plate competition defeating Millbrook Academy six tries to four before Chosen Hill took the Cup Final with a 5-3 win over Bartholomew School.
The Year 10 tournament saw St Peters school win the title with an emphatic 5-1 success over Chosen Hill who were tough opponents despite the scoreline. Remarkably, the win was the fourth success for this age group who have been champions since Year 7.
All of the competition winners will progress into the RFL’s Champion Schools competition, a national knockout tournament, where they will compete against sides from across the country in December.
“This year has seen the standard increase once again at this competition as our Sky Try coaching has continued to develop the schools and our Embed the Pathway training means that teachers are doing
a great job with their teams,” said Dan Garbutt, Sky Try Co-ordinator for the All Golds. Following on from the 1908 Cup, players who wish to play more rugby league will be able to experience more of the game at two coaching programmes that the All Golds are overseeing this summer.
The programmes, one in Gloucester at the University’s Oxstalls campus and the second in Cheltenham, based at Old Patesians in conjunction with Cheltenham Phoenix RLC, will be run for ten weeks and will give players coaching as well as playing opportunities.

Oxford Cavaliers cruised to a 48-20 win over Gloucestershire Warriors in Pool 1 of the West of England league in their opening fixture of the season.
The Cavaliers, who were 26-0 ahead before half-

with Sam Conway adding a couple of goals.

Pool 2 saw Cheltenham Phoenix travel to Bridgwater and come away with their second win of the season after a 38-14 success over Somerset Vikings. Forest Bulldogs visit to Swindon St George was postponed after the Foresters’ bus was involved in an accident on its way to the ground.
ROUND 3 PREVIEW - SAT4th JUNE
Cheltenham North RFC host Pool 2 leaders
Cheltenham Phoenix who face second placed Swindon St George in what should be an entertaining tussle. Both sides are unbeaten this season though it is very early in the campaign. The Phoenix won the corresponding fixture last season and will start slight favourites for this game.
After a false start last week, the Forest Bulldogs host Somerset Vikings in their home league debut. The Vikings have lost both their games so far this season and will be hoping that their long experience will see them home against the league’s new boys.
It is also first versus second in Pool 1 as Portsmouth Seahawks host Oxford
Cavaliers while Bristol Sonics (4th) entertain Bath Romans who lie fifth. The teams fought out three epic encounters last season with each side winning one game while the third ended in a thrilling 30-30 draw at Dings Crusaders.
The Cavaliers are looking strong this season but will be tested by the Seahawks particularly with home advantage. Should the Seahawks prevail, they will have a four point lead in the table.

ALL GOLDS KICKED OUT BY CHARGERSLONDON CHARGERS 28 – 16 ALL GOLDS CLSAt Motspur Park
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
The two new sides in the CLS met at Motspur Park and the London Chargers edged an enthralling contest thanks to their goalkicking as they crossed the whitewash five times to their opponents’ four.
Once again, the All Golds hit the road with a young squad but they stood up to their more experienced opponents, scoring four good tries but failing to convert any of the scores. After taking the lead through the impressive Jack Uren, the
All Golds found themselves 16-8 behind by the time half time was called.
The All Golds had scored before the break through Luke Stephens who once more showed his eye for the half chance close to the line and after it through Liam Rice-Wilson who backed up a searing break by Dieter
Thomas to score in the corner.
However the Chargers responded with two converted tries of their own and an unconverted Connor Jones score in the final few minutes wasn’t enough to earn the visitors at least a share of the spoils.
Jones was the standout performer in a side full of heart and commitment which continues to bode well for the future.

ROUND 8 PREVIEWWRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
There was Welsh success elsewhere in Round 8 with league leaders Valley Cougars securing their fifth win in a row with a 56-10 success at Coventry Bears. Gethin King claimed a hat-trick of tries while John Sanigar crossed twice and Lee Goddard added a try to his eight goal haul.
Jamie Marsh, Scott Britton, Ethan Coombes and Liam Price also got on the scoresheet for the Cougars who remain two points clear at the top.
The Bears, for whom this was the third heavy defeat in a row, replied with tries from Roddy Jones and Tom Tsang, former All Gold Tawanda Chpadza adding a goal.
Another former All Gold was in the points as former triallist Danyl Davies scored five tries in Torfaen Tigers’ 50-44 win over Nottingham Outlaws. A high-scoring game was only sealed thanks to a late penalty by Matthew Cummins who added his fifth goal to his haul of three tries. Jared Hinnem and Chris Wannell collected the Tigers’ other scores.
Full-back Adam Cunliffe almost matched Davies, as he scored four times in a losing cause. Nick Tasker, George Strachan, Oliver Dale and Joe Barton added further four pointers for the Outlaws with Luca Costante booting six goals.
ROUND 9 IN FOCUSWRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
Round 9 sees some mouth-watering match-ups as the third placed Outlaws host the
Chargers who sit in second. The Chargers won the corresponding fixture earlier in the season and have lost just one of their five games so far this season. The Outlaws’ form has been disappointing with just one win in their last five matches and a home win is vital to get them back on track.
Valley Cougars are the form side in the division with five straight wins under their belts and they have home advantage against Torfaen Tigers who earned their first win of the campaign last week against the Outlaws. The game should have all the passion of a Welsh derby and a fierce contest will be the result. The Cougars should be favourites having already beaten the Tigers 28-14 this season but the Tigers are returning to full strength and could easily turn the tables on the leaders.
Sixth plays fifth as the West Wales Raiders host the Coventry Bears in the other Round 9 fixture. Just six weeks ago, the Bears edged home by the odd point in 85 but since then have conceded over a half century of points in three consecutive games. The Raiders have themselves begun to find some form having disposed of the Chargers’ unbeaten record in their last game. A Welsh win would see the Raiders leapfrog the Bears and put them in with a chance of a run on the top four.
