Gloria

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

First Reading Isaiah 55:10-11

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah

Thus says the LORD: Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; my word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it. The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God

Second Reading Rom 8:18-23

A Reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans

Brothers and sisters:

I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us.

For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God; for creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God.

We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and not only that, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.

The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God

Gospel Reading Mt 13:1-9 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear.” The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Reflections on our Readings for

The 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Readings can be found on Page 2)

“The Seed That Falls On Good Ground Will Yield A Fruitful Harvest”

T his Sunday, we begin a three week lesson of the

parables of Jesus. This Sunday's readings offer

some thought provoking imagery of the power of

the Word of God, how we respond to it, and its effect on

us.

In our first reading (Isaiah 55:10-11), Isaiah uses the

same imagery that Jesus uses in our Gospel passage.

The Word of God comes down from heaven as “seed to

the one who sews” and returns to God for the purpose for

which he sent it.

In our Epistle reading (Romans 8:18-23), St. Paul talks

about our current sufferings while we wait for the glory to

come. Our "groaning pains" will one day give way to the

"glorious freedom". While we wait, the Word of God

sustains and feeds us.

Our Gospel reading (Matthew 13:1-23) is the familiar

parable of the Sower. We hear Jesus preaching to the

crowds and then explaining in more detail to his

disciples. But there is another level to Jesus’ explanation.

Parables as told by Jesus are “riddles” whose meaning is

granted to those chosen by God, yet hidden from those

whose hearts are hardened.

T here is another twist to Jesus’ parable of the

sower. Not many sowers would waste good seed

on rocky ground or throw it in with the thorns or

weeds. But our sower, Jesus, casts his seed (the Word

of God) wherever there are ears to hear it, regardless of

how productive it will be. Jesus gives everyone of us the

same opportunity to nurture the seed and turn it into

productive grain. In a sense, the soil is our hearts—is it

rocky? Is it fertile? Imagine the good that can come when

the Word of God falls on fertile ears and rests in fertile

hearts.

Bearing Fruit in our World

As I reflected on the readings this week, I thought about my vegetable garden and what those tomato plants need to produce an abundant harvest! And of course, as we know, they need fertile soil, water and light to grow strong and sturdy. And then I thought . . . Wow . . . so do we.

We need to ask, are we firmly rooted in fertile ground and ready to withstand the storms in this world? Or are we a little shaky, at times falling victim to some of the darkness in our world? Unfortunately, the darkness- the pandemic, the economy and racial unrest- seems to have divided us rather than united us. For instance, some of us question the science, the sources, we hear one thing one day and something different the next. Should we open up the economy or take it slower? The racial protests have many of us coming to terms with our past. All of this has contributed to frustration, anxiety and negativity for many of us. Depression and discouragement can sink in. As it relates to the pandemic, we may ask ourselves if we are being overly cautious or are others not taking this serious enough. Everyone with different risk factors, different levels of risk tolerance; all of which can push us into being very judgmental and intolerant.

Recently we have heard stories of people being exhausted with all that is required to keep us all safe, not agreeing on reopening procedures, struggling with their own racist past perhaps. This is all causing strife within our families and communities. So in trying to maintain our standing on fertile ground, are we struggling to accept others actions in the midst of all of this? Our readings shed light on this dilemma. Is it only about maintaining our own footing; or, like Jesus, is part of securing our own footing, fulfilling the call to be the fertile ground for others; maintaining a level of compassion and empathy, helping them also thrive? To be empathetic and compassionate, aren’t we called to put our own desires and comforts aside and defer to the needs of the most vulnerable, the most anxious? Remember, God does not ask of us what he does not provide. Therefore, let us pray that we can be the life giving soil, that fertile ground, for others to survive and flourish in our world each day. Much love, Deacon Jim
